great band. superunknown and down on the upside are very good cds. chris cornell has one of the greatest voices ever.

i disagree, still he was great in soundgarden.
he had one of the greatest voices back in the early years of Soundgarden. but he kinda lost it. he's not bad now, not at all.
this is how I rank their albums:
1. Louder Than Love
2. Badmotorfinger
3. Superunknown
4. Down On The Upside
5. Screaming Life/Fopp
6. Ultramega OK
while I do love the later hits like Black Hole Sun and Blow Up The Outside World, their older songs are fucking amazing. and brutal. Jesus Christ Pose, Hands All Over, I Awake, Loud Love, Searching With My Good Eye Closed, Slaves & Bulldozers.... all of them beat the crap out of the later stuff.
a five minute clip of Nothing To Say from Screaming Life/Fopp was on Encarta 95 and I would have only been 8 then, always been intrigued then hooked since. The epitome of bands at that time, would be interesting to see what a release would sound like by them these days.

he certainly has tailed off in recent years but i still think his voice is unbelieveable. no one sounds like that.
superunknown was the shit. i loved that cd back in the day
"Rusty cage", "Blow up the outside world", and "pretty noose" are some of my favourite songs.
I like that Led-Zep/Black Sabbath-esque 70s hard rock sound they did combined with the alternative 90s aesthetic, very good esp on Badmotorfinger
By the way does anyone think the acoustic opening riff to Been A While by Staind sounds suspiciously like it's trying to rip-off the one from Black Hole Sun from 8 years earlier? ...no shit.
superunknown is definitely my fav! i love badmotorfinger to although i wish it could be remastered or somethin to make the overall sound on it better!!
i enjoy badmotorfinger a lot more than superunknown.
Ditto, love that classic rock sound mixed with grunge groove...
well, just in order to know the subject, i downloaded their Superunknown. WEll, really, really good band. I know you won't love these words, but they are influenced (in good way) by FNM a lot. Also reminded me of Fugazi.
Lyrics are pretty cool, i must say. So, thanks for opening new cool band for me, these days it doesn't happen often, really.
damn, you've never heard soundgarden before now? crazy man.
get "badmotorfinger" next.

exactly that whole Seattle scene grew up totally differently (albeit at a similar time) to most of what was going on in California. I'd say FNM are a lot more influenced by hardcore and thrash than Soundgarden was. Ultramega OK and Screaming Life/Fopp-era indeed shows they were taking that direction of grunge, etc.

yeah, you got it right.
grunge was majorly influenced by the big arena rockers of the 60's-70's and early metal, with some country rock thrown in. one little bit of the grunge scene was deeply rooted in punk as well. this is where Nirvana and Mudhoney belong.
early Faith No More were based on punk, hip-hop and 80's metal. then Patton came along and just threw in all sorts of other influences into the mixture.
if anything, Faith No More's later sound was influenced by grunge rather than the other way around.
yea i agree with aenemic.
bitches brew was a great recording.
now i'm listening to early Soundgarden albums, comparing it... Soundgarden, FNM, Fugazi, maybe Icon Moss and dozens of others late 80s/early90s bands are based on the same influences. I take my words back
I think its terribly difficult to pin down FNM. If its worth any comparison it would be to say that Soundgarden is somewhat more straightfoward than FNM.
Indeed in terms of guitar sound and influence (like Zevaka says) you could draw some parallels. I still see much more of a thrash strain running through FNM than Soundgarden though.

that's what I said. Soundgarden's guitar work is more in style with Sabbath and Zeppelin, while FNM's is a lot more 80's metal. Jim Martin was pretty clear with Metallica being his biggest influence.
I love some of the thrashier stuff FNM did (although it was more comic book-ish than Metallica and the others) like Surprise! You're Dead.

yeah, when they got heavy you always knew it was gonna be good. it'd be interesting to know how much of it was tongue-in-cheek or maybe straight out parody though. I mean, Jim was always a metal head, and we know that Patton likes heavy stuff deep down inside. but something tells me it was just for laughs some of the time...

Yeah I reckon, they never liked to overdo a genre. Some heavy songs like Jizzlobber and Malpractice seem heartfelt though.
I like how Malpractice gives you a taste of what Patton would later do with other projects.

no, cornell was always a puss. its the band that was awesome.
nah man. Cornell was fucking sick back then.
just check some of their live vids for proof.
yeah, he was fucking awesome. he's lost his greatness now unfortunately.
but he never was anything without the rest of the band backing him up anyways. Kim Thayil's guitars and Matt Cameron's drums gave them as much a unique sound as Chris' voice.
i hear that the guitarist with the long hair never leaves his dungeon of an apartment. as tom waits once said, "whats he doing in there?"
"he's building something".
For the song "Room A Thousand Years Wide" it sounds like Cornell sings "I walk in the corpse of heroin...", but the lyrics I've looked up claim it's "He walks in the cold sun and wind" which is bullshit because he clearly says "I" not "he". But am I the only one that hears him sing "I walk in the corpse of heroin..."???
Man I love Soundgarden. I only have Superunknown but my boss has shit loads of their stuff on his iPod which we've always got on at work :]
This band is one of the reasons I wish I was like 10 years older; I missed out on the chance of seeing so many good bands such as Soundgarden, Faith No More, Alice In Chains [with Layne] and Pantera etc.

great, one of the most importants bands of the history of music.

I'm really into this band as of late. Especially the Badmotorfinger album. I really want to learn "Room A Thousand Years Wide" on guitar, but I can't seem to find complete tabs for it...
that riff is awesome. dunno how to play it though, sorry.
listening to Down on The Upside right now. it's not often bands quit while they're still kicking ass.
Louder Than Love is still my favorite Soundgarden album though. it's so raw and powerful. and very different. in a good way.
Yo I figured out that riff, and like 'oly fuck, is it the easiest thing in the world! But I just can't get it out of my head :D
and anyways, could someone listen to Room A Thousand Years Wide and CONFIRM for me that Cornell is NOT singing "I walk in the corpse of heroin..."...wait nevermind, that IS what he's singing, I'm bloody sure of it! AND NOT A SINGLE SITE ON THE NET HAS IT RIGHT! HAHAHAHA
I bow down to Jesus Christ Pose.
Amazing song, metal/rock classic I'd say, nevermind the grunge label...
the video is awesome too. such great grunge vibes.
check this out, I Awake live from the Louder Than Live video (one of their best songs imo):

QuoteSlaughter of a song right here. Not for weak hearts. What the hell is this knob of a vocalist trying to do?
Oh god that sounds like the vocalist of band Rise Against after smoking blunts and shit load of cigs all weekend. Even worse than D.E.P.'s cover of the same song.
EDIT: oh shit it IS the vocalist of Rise Against, lol.
wow, he's indeed murdering this song.... pretty sad !

sadly, no... it's from his new album "Scream".
It's produced by fucking Timbaland. They've been laying down some fat beats, yo.
::)
Truly pathetic. the rest of soundgarden (and audioslave for that matter) must be shaking their heads.
that is tragic.
What's up with his beard and hair. He looks fucking greasy.
I don't mind his looks, he looks more grunge now than he did with the short hair.
but yeah, I really don't understand what he's doing. rock music in general has made such a huge comeback lately and lots of old bands are reuniting (for better or worse). even grunge has sort of been brougt back from the dead. this should be every old rock god's dream. but this man goes ahead and records a fucking r'nb album with fucking Timbaland? *shakes head in disgust and disappointment*
oh, and from wikipedia...

It's stupid because one of my best friends is really obsessed with Chris Cornell nowadays, and became even more so after seeing him in concert a couple weekends ago... me, I lost respect for CC when I found out that it was his fault Soundgarden went soft/more mainstream and broke up, and when he canceled his own shows to play at Walmart/etc. just because it was more profitable (or something stupid like that) to do so... what a sell-out douche, and that stuff with Timbaland is crap, nothing new just more stupid drunkin dancing music...isn't there enough stuff like that out there already? shit...

if this is how the Soundgarden reunion is gonna sound, I will temporarily forgive Cornell for all his downfalls and the fact that this is just another moneygrab for him.
From now on, whenever people say that Chris Cornell can't sing anymore I'll use that video as an example to prove them wrong.

Yep, curious about it after the trailer. Sounded interesting.
really looking forward to this album, but I'm not getting my hopes up. the song for Avengers was mediocre and the others snippets I've heard all sound mellow as fuck. they can do mellow, definitely. but they need a good amount of heavy as well.
I just discovered Black Rain (where the hell was I?) and was disappointed when I realized it's not a new song from the album, but rather a really old tune. man, why can't they write stuff like this anymore?
http://youtu.be/E493gpf_rm8 (http://youtu.be/E493gpf_rm8)
They will never be that heavy and good again. But even though the trailer is soft, it sounds very Soundgarden and interesting to me. More along the lines of Down on the Upside.

Pretty good.
meh. this sounds nothing like old Soundgarden.
Soundgarden is one of my favorite bands, but I don't really like this song too much. The song that goes with the trailer is pretty sweet though, so i'm not too worried about the new album.
It sounds kind of like what I expected a new single from them to sound like. It sounds pretty forgettable and isn't even a good single. Definitely nothing special about it. Kind of like the second and third Audioslave albums.
Love this new song.
it's a pretty ordinary rock song. sounds more like something off of Stone Temple Pilot's latest album than something Soundgarden would ever create. too much rock'n'roll for them. I hope the rest of the album doesn't sound like this, or it'll be a huge disappointment.
I`m thinking the new album is gonna be pretty lame. Chris Cornell solo meets Audioslave is my thinking. The weaker Audioslave stuff too, like the last 2 albums.

King Animal is streaming for free on ITunes. Upon first listen I can't tell if its a grower or if its phoned in. Some songs really stand out and others seem like rehashed versions of old songs. I reserve judgment
Love the new track. Killer
Love Soundgarden. These guys scared the crap out of me with the "Black Hole Sun" video when I was little. I don't know why it just creeped me the eff out!
November 13th release of their new album King Animal. And Koi No Yokan?! This will be a long time since I actually went to a store and bought cd's. lol
And possible eaklay... Tits!!!
the album has leaked.
Its streaming on NME. I actually liked the album. It's not their best but its better than i thought! Cornell's got a great voice still
It's good. I expected most songs to be like "Been Away Too Long", but that's luckily the only one like that on there.

I gotta say I'm pleasantly surprised. it's not as stale as I was afraid of.
I don't know if it's fair to give my opinion since I first listened to this outside going for a walk (noises and stuff that can be distractions) but the album overall kind of bored me. It got my interest pretty good around song 2 and 3 but I started losing interest after that. The songs kind of blended together for me. I definitely need to listen to it again without distractions though.
I can't see this being as good as any of their other main albums. There just aren't any memorable songs like Burden In My Hand, Blow Up the Outside World, Black Hole Sun, etc. Some of their singles are some of the best songs on the album. Not anymore.
yeah, do that. it'll likely grow on you. it's a lot more diverse than I thought it would be. but I will agree that there are no instant classics on this one.
I've listened to it 5 times today. It's like a darker, more ambient Down On The Upside. I LOVE it!!!
i bit midtempo oriented (just as i felt with diamond eyes) but still, pretty good. i too thought this would be kinda stale, but it is nothing like that. im digging it, this is an instant top 10 of the year for me. great work soundgarden.
the first song, Been Away Too Long, is easily the weakest song on the album. why the hell did they release that one first? at first I thought it was ok but just really boring, but compared to the rest of the album it's pretty much a shit song. the main riff annoys the crap out of me.

I was really worried this was going to suck and be a bad "reintroduction album" ever since the band announced they were back together. Not the case here. It seems like they picked up where they left off and made a damn good album.... easily one of my favorites for the year as well. Bones of Birds is slamming.

probably because it's the only really catchy song and they wanted a strong lead single.
I actually love that this album doesn't have any instant classics and hit songs. something about it makes me think more of older Soundgarden. I still miss the heaviness and groove, but oh well. I'm just so fucking happy they had the guts to do such an intricate and experimental album in this day and age.
Bones of Birds and Attrition, even Rowing, display how much musical ability Soundgarden still has.
really digging this album at the moment, just as much as the new Deftones even.
I've honestly come to skip the first song. the second is actually a great opener in itself. they should've just skipped that first atrocity.

But the rest of the album especially blood on the valley floor, bones of birds, taree and eyelids mouth are fucking killer and vintage sg to me. I should include a thousand days before in there too. Been Away too long and halfway should have been left off the album, in my opinion.

I agree with Jacob.
King Animal gets more interesting with each listen. Lots of layers and none of songs have single-potential (except Been Away Too Long). Sure, it's not Badmotorfinger, but it's still a ballsy record.
Glad I gave this a bit more time than the first "impartial" listen that I had. I would normally go "meh" and leave it at that.
I'm now finding it a pretty steller album as a whole (except for maybe one filler in "Halfway There" which sounds to me like they needed one more, and Cornell delved into his solo crap)...
