Title: What do you do, to prevent global warming?
Post by: Variable on Jan 14, 2008, 06:57 PM
So as  most of you can probably guess, I am in no way an environmentalist hippy freak.  However, I do think it is important to do your part and not just be a polluting ass hole because you can.  So I was recently watching an episode of "my name is earl" where he went to a ....I guess hippy comune.  And they were giving him ideas about how he could do his part for global warming.  Like using hemp bags when you go shopping ( which I never thought of ) and stuff like that.  So I figured we could swap some ideas because a lot of us may not be thinking of some really easy things we can do.

So I personally do easy things like
1.keep lights off
2. make the plastic trash bags last as long as possible ( we dont have any trash cans out here I can use)
3. we eat with plastic utensils out here, they come with a spoon, knife, and fork.  I usually dont use all of them for each meal.  So I will save the ones I dont use for some other time.
4.  I would love not to use plastic water bottles, but thats all we have for water.  But I do stay away from plastic bowls and stuff.
ummmm thats really about.  I have a lot more I would love to do when I get home.  It is just hard when you are deployed.  What about you guys though?

as there is a huge line between attitude and manifast behavior i try to act on how my attitude is and to keep this line as low as possible.

for example: i know its not ok to throw batteries in the garden. so i stop throwing them in the garden.

its pretty generell but i think the sentence above is a good personal guide for me

oh yeah. as i am german, my environmental attitude is pretty good ;)

nanana calm down. this is just what green politicians or environmental scientist try to do.
make environmental behaviour  more attractive.
i just dont need rewards for my behaviour. i try to take it as a duty.

I don't drive. I take public transportation so I don't waste a shit ton of money for gas. It feels good not having to worry about hitting anybody, being hit, staying awak while driving, etc etc.

yeah I forgot about that.  One of my summer school biology teachers (yeah im a winner) taught me about how bad it was to throw away batteries.  I have been good about it.  But thats another thing I cant do while deployed.  We just literally burn EVERYTHING.  Shit, piss, batteries, garbage, everything gets burned.  Drives me crazy

yeah I have not been allowed to drive for 2 years now ( just because of my duty stations in the military)  I think all the time about how much money I save on gas and car payments and insurance.  Plus I used to drink and drive a lot.  Now that I took a step back (and maybe grew up a little) I realized how stupid I was being and how easy it is to get around without drinking and driving.  I would be a big supporter of a move towards mass public transportation for all of the states in the US.

yeah I know what you mean, Hillary has a shot and Al Gore won the Nobel prize for a cinematic power point presentation.

The world is no worse off than it was 100 years ago.  We are just more aware of it now.  Which means we should take action to fix it.  Or maybe we should just revert back to slavery and fuck womens rights.  Hell I say we go back to the earth being flat.  Not like there have ever been drastic changes made in culture to better the world.

- I reuse paper plates all the damn time - I mean, to the point of even rinsing the foam plates.
- I use grocery bags in place of regular trash bags.
- Turn off lights
- Public transportation when I can, drive when it's more convenient in certain situations, bike when there are sidewalks.
- Buy more efficient light bulbs

I just hate the feeling of pure consumption and being driven to buy and waste more.

here's a couple of things i do to prevent environmental problems:

- i cycle a lot. i do have a car but i use it maby like twice a month
- i don't eat meat (except for fish every now and then) and i hardly use any dairy products eather.
- oh yeah, and i try to shut the lights and all that stuff like avoiding using plasticbags etc

LOL!!

I mean I do worry about things, not for me,but my family down the road. I think we have far worse things to worry about though. Diseases,war,poverty.... And like you said,it's been goin on for a while, just brought to our attention more now. I do however only use aerosols that do not contain CFC's.  (I totally learned about that in 7 grade!)

Public transportation would be great,if it were offered everywhere. But in smaller towns it's not available. I have a  new smaller car,and travel very little so that's not a worry to me.

The only point that I will make here is that we hae had Disease, war, and poverty, since the start of time.  However this is probably the worst condition the planet has ever been in, ever........just a thought.

- turn off water when brushing my teeth
- don't drive; using public transport or walk
- tend not to use plastic bags
- turn the lights off
- plugging out electronical devices when I'm not using them(in case you didn't know, even if your tv's/stereo is in the standby mode, it still drains electricity)
- recycle
- use roll-on deodorants
- try to use the maximum out of every paper

i think that's it.. i'll fill it in if i remember something.

Many good ways to help the environment have been posted, a lot of which I adhere to. One I might've missed but find extremely helpful is paper over plastic, as much as possible, or no bags at all...

Also, encourage littering, trash in a landfill takes over 500% longer to decompose biodegrable material... Who cares how "neat" your city looks, murder, rape, evil is underneath it regardless, give it a break...

One more, if your child is acting out to much, eat them, great source of protein, just a good source of free re-useable energy...

another good way would be to build giant power plants in 3rd world countries.  They would polute less than those people destroying their habitats for energy.  Also nuclear power.  That would solve a lot.  but people dont want to hear that.

i heard the military is working on satellites in orbit that collect energy from the sun to transmit to soldiers in the field. hopefully this works out, because the solar power that would be able to be generated outside the atmosphere is much more powerful than what we currently get on earth.

You have a very interesting view on the purpose of a military.

BTW Military medicine is usually the leading in the world to make advances in trauma care.  Thus saving lives world wide.  THOSE BASTARDS!

yeah, most tech advances come from the military or the space program, which is affliated with the military. its not cost effective otherwise. the budget for these projects are enormous and the govt wouldnt be able to sell them any other way. ppl have very different reactions to "do it for science" vs "its to keep the soldiers safe"

E=MC2 - Break through in science (theory of relativity).

Use - genocide.

I just don't like where government's (military) main focus lay... Where in a medical field, they would consider a theory or scientific break through as a great way to kill... Get my logic?

yeah, most tech advances come from the military or the space program, which is affliated with the military. its not cost effective otherwise. the budget for these projects are enormous and the govt wouldnt be able to sell them any other way. ppl have very different reactions to "do it for science" vs "its to keep the soldiers safe"
NASA and DOD are hardly related.  Other than both being part of the Government.  And the Government does a pretty good job of throwing money around to plenty of other plances than the Military.  And who cares if the military develops something?  having a bunch of under paid soldiers work on something is cheaper than contract work anyways.  And the military does a lot more than just go out and kill people.  If all we did were kill people Iraq and Afghanistan would be gone, as in gone gone.

E=MC2 - Break through in science (theory of relativity).

Use - genocide.

I just don’t like where government’s (military) main focus lay... Where in a medical field, they would consider a theory or scientific break through as a great way to kill… Get my logic?

Ok, I must have missed something.  Where in US history (besides the indians, which came way before einstein) Has the us attempted genocide?  One of our history teachers really droped the ball on this one.

and actually I dont think I 100% understand what you were trying to say about the medical thing.  but the goal of military medicine is to save lives, not take them.  And we treat everyone. Every Iraqi and afghan.  I personally have treated members of the Taliban and HIG, knowing they were both.  And the break throughs in military medicine are used to save lives of soldiers, and the people we fight.  So no, I really dont get your logic at all.

And now before you google something to come back at me, keep in mind that the US military invented the Internet.  Those evil life taking ass holes.  I wouldnt want you to kill some kid in africa just because you googled something to prove me wrong.

I'm saying, and this is not a world we live in... We shouldn't need military period. In a perfect would we would just have medicine no need to kill...

I'm not talking the world we live in, I'm ideaistic in a in a world wich doesn't consider the possiblily to the lyrics of Beatles "Imagine".

Actually, NASA is very closely aligned with the military. many of its projcts are worked in concert with the pentagon. and most of the test pilots and astronauts are current or former military personel. Many of NASA's projects originated at the pentagon.

yeah well the #1 desired job for retired US military workers is a wal mart greeter.  That doesn't mean wal mart is closely aligned with the military.

To be honest, I don't do shit. We put our recylcling out every Thursday and thats it. I just don't see why I have to miss out on fun because our parents fucked the planet.

I use air conditioning, drive a big car, flush the toilet just to watch the water spin and leave the hose on during the water shortage.

Do simple things like, pee in the shower, use paper instead of plastic, eat less shit with multiple wrappers, use stuff like simple green to clean grease rather than other nasties, make sure your car is NOT dripping any oil, etc. One 1qt of oil polliutes 1,000 gallons of water, at least. Drink your bong water.

you are right.  Corn is not the answer.  Hydrogen is probably the answer but It will be at least a decade before all the technology hits the major production phase.  In the mean time I think that hybrid cars are the answer.  Just decrease the demand before we can totally break free.  I just read a good article on this.  Ill see if I can find it.
