Title: What song should the Deftones cover next?
Post by: rainnyx4 on Oct 25, 2008, 04:49 PM
I'm going with:

The Police - Omega Man

This song is tight and practically sounds like one of their songs already.

That's quite an interesting choice. I'd like to see Dirt by them, abe would kill it.

My vote goes for The Drowning man, The cure. It's been so long since they did Lennon's song...(and that was just abe and chino)

yea well, it was just something that poped in my head when i was listening to them on the radio, but since they did Sade, i figured cranberries would be on a similar vocal level for chino yet steph could have a very flexible ffreedom to dirty their clean sounds in a both legit and warped mannerism

i think it would be interesting to hear deftones cover this one:

Arctic Monkeys Pretty Visitors Humbug (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVRvUIV6G-E#)

Steph could play it heavier and more metal-ish.chino could mix cocky rap with screams and franks could play an eerie melody insted of the organ.  above all - steph could do something brutal at 2:10 like the icing on the cake!
maybe not, but also - maybe!

I'm going to come out with an odd one.
It's not exactly the deftones but with a member of the deftones.
I think Red Sparowes with Chino on Vocals should cover Kathy's Song by Red House Painters.
I know this is never gonna happen but for the instrumental i think Red Sparowes would be the best band to cover it and Chino would definitely be the man to lay the vocals.

This song just becomes so epic when it gets to 4:33.
this could be such an amazing one if covered properly.

I picture an old Metallica jam, one of the more pretty but darker ones like "Fade to Black" without solos or Jane's "Ted, Just Admit it" (Nothing's Shocking). I could think of other Jane's songs probably if I took the time, (one of my favorite bands) or even Beck or Prince. Oh! Jane's "Whores"! Or, "City". ;D

" I see the girls go by dressed in their summer clothes!"-  "Paint it Black" or "Painted Black" I believe it's called by the Rolling Stones... I should know the title as I am a fan. But anyway, listen to it and picture it a little heavier tho it is one of the Stone's harder tracks. I like the "orion" idea too! Would love to hear them on "Sweat Leaf" too but I can't picture Chino there rt now.... 8) He would have to sing it out in the sultry, hush style he's famous for and howl or even scream out the chorus, like the part I quoted up top ( on the Stones track)

fuck covers, release the album

Covers are an integral part of deftones. Without them, it wouldn't feel the same

I say release albums AND more covers. They reign as masters in my book as a cover band alone. They do everything they cover total justice. I've been turned on to a few bands because Deftones brought them to my attention. When they did "Simple Man" for example, i wasn't ever into Skynard though I was brought up around their music and they made them sound even worse to me. Sounded like Chino's mind expressing itself to me as if he wrote it himself. U can totally tell it's not Deftonish as far as the rest of the guys go but it rocks my balls and gives me goosebumps. My best friend's funeral song was this by Skynard and Deftones' cover didn't come out till a yr later. His family heard Deftones' version through me and his mom n sister cried it was so good. Still don't like Skynard and my dad even jizzed over the Tones' version. I made him listen to it before telling him it was his punk ass son's favorite group.

I really wanted to hear those Earth, Wind & Fire covers they were going to do during the KNY sessions. Would've either been amazing or at the very least, if they were terrible, hilarious.
