Title: Between the Buried and Me

Yeah, they needed a thread. I discovered them about 3 weeks ago and I literally haven't been listening to anything else.

I bought their live DVD and it blew my mind. Fucking tight band. Flawless musicians...

Favorite song at the moment? Informal Gluttony. The "feed me fear" part gives me chills.

My new goal is to learn the entire Colors album on bass. Shiiiit.

Discuss!

welcome to my world, haha.
do you have their other albums? seriously every album might be just as good as Colors. Especially Alaska and Silent Circus.

favorite song might be Selkies

Both Alaska and Colors are great, and yes selkies is the shit, it was the first BTBAM song I heard, after that I was hooked.

Misdirect Me - wookubus
(11:14 PM PST 07/06/2009)
Between The Buried And Me have settled upon "The Great Misdirect" as the title to their new album which they have wrapped up tracking and are currently mixing. The track listing for the outing, which is due in stores on October 27th through Victory, is as follows:
01 - "Mirrors"
02 - "Obfuscation"
03 - "Disease, Injury, Madness"
04 - "Fossil Genera - A Feed From Cloud Mountain"
05 - "Desert Of Song"
06 - "Swim To The Moon"

Haha six songs now?  Pretty soon they'll go all Fantomas on us and just release one huge song.

I loved these guys until Alaska was released. I hate the guitar sounds on that album. Gives me chills, and not the good kind.

But, a few days ago I put on Colours, just to see what they sound like nowadays, and I was totally floored ! This is def. their greatest release in my opinion. I listen to it all the time, I even put the new PTW aside so I could keep listening to Colours.

The Great Misdirect is my most anticipated leak of the year besides TFOT's newest.

If it's leaked on here, and the link takes me somewhere else, the cruel irony will kill me.

and like I said, MOST AMAZING BTBAM YET.

Mainly glad that the more melodic parts have been extended so much, rather than being only 30-60 seconds like on Colors.

I'm enjoying their new album a lot.

To answer your previous question, Bright Lights. The reason I never liked 'Colors' was because Kerrang! (who was my bible at the time), said it was a load of shit and gave it 2 K's (2 out of 5) rating. So I never really gave it a chance but I think I'll give it a listen. The trouble is, there is SO much music that has come out this year I just don't have the time to listen to it all... And that's where you get the problem of over-looking some great albums because you just don't have the time.

Watched the Colors DVD again today. I'm so fucking blown away by Dan Briggs' bass playing. I can't believe he doesn't get more recognition. He's truly one of the best bassists alive.

Truly mindblowing.

Fossil Genera - A Feed from Cloud Mountain is my favorite. Just too many awesome parts in that song. The "breakdown" at 05:14 is just epic. And what a beautiful ending.

Come on man, lets not jump to conclusions like that.  It's just, after waiting years for this follow-up, I want to be in the dark and listen to this stoned upon the first listen.  Second listen can be as sober as possible.  It's a tradition I have...don't jump on my case for it.

I'm glad to see most everyone agrees Fossil Genera and Swim To The Moon are also my favorites but fuck I love the entire album. I've been listening to it all the way through 2-5 times a day since it leaked, fixing to go pick up my copy now.

Anyone else notice the horse in the background during Disease, Injury, Madness? It's right around the Muse-y solo near 7 minutes. Thought that was funny.

A few initial thoughts:

1. I just have to get this out: OPETH OPETH OPETH OPETH OPETH OPETH OPETH...ok now I'll never bring it up again.
2. First song was a cool intro...kind of kept me off guard, though it's similar to Colors.  A one-two punch to begin again.  Liked what I was hearing but not extremely impressed.
3. Disease, Injury, Madness....love the song, but see number 1.
4. I was really pleased when Fossil Genera kicked in.  THIS is what I was expecting all along in the new album...just had to wait a few tracks.  Great song.
5. Desert of Song was a really cool segue.
6. Swim to the Moon is very epic, a grand way to really end this album and a new step for BTBAM,  being such a long piece.

all in all I'd give it a B.  Definitely not going to top Colors for me, I can already tell.

Only minor nitpick:

I think Disease, Injury, Madness could have been cut into two seperate songs. Ending the first part with the acoustic singing and then over to a new song starting with the awesome bass intro.

maybe they wanted a long song again. anyone else notice that each other their albums are constantly containing longer and longer songs, but fewer and fewer tracks?

maybe the next BTBAM record will be 1 song for about 55 minutes.

I was bored so heres the lyrics from the cd case.

Mirrors and Obfuscation

Everything's a novelty.
Everyone grows but me.

Close one eye. Step to the side.
Everyone grows but me

Everyone's in fragments.
Close one eye. Step to the side.

From the simple idea of Change Blindness, our minds are not as they seem.
An entire existence revolving around what we can't acknowledge.
A brain malfunction we'll never admit as defeat...
a constant determination to find truths...to find reason...to find comfort.
An unspoken religion in being the ALL-DOMINANT...This is what we call a brain.

This step will allow the universe to run its course. We have a short ticket and a lot is in hiding...
so let's take in what we can for now. Just like here on Earth (a notion we do comprehend)
Hide what "others" can't understand. The universe is the biggest threat...
overachiever that commands attention. Brute force of hysterical reasonings...
There will always be a Marfa.

Close one eye. Step to the side.

As humans we could never be content with knowing all,
yet we can't be content with the fact the our brains will never know. A mental surgery...
a neverending journey...a technological drawback. Pushing us further from our natural minds.

Even things created by other humans should be considered in the experiment of an entire species of understanding.
A magician's pure joy...
A mind bend for the common folk...
Follow the straight line...
(A full house watching what we can't see)
The ultimate deceiver...

Close one eye. Step to the side.

We will ALWAYS be part of the great misdirect...stepping in and stepping out.
Mirrors and Obfuscation

Disease, Injury, Madness

Don't think. Don't speak. I will do this for you.
Every natural thought or feeling you've ever had will change tonight.
Don't think. Don't speak. I will do this for you.
Trust the pedestal, for now we become a higher being.

I am your new mind.
I am your new you.
I am your new sin.
I am for you now.

Control...and collapse...collide.
A letter plagued by a twisted word. Slave. You will become mine, for there are no more options.
There will not be a sweet consolation...this is what is supposed to happen.
A predetermined destiny put in motion by my stronger power.

YOU are ME.

Child:
I sit on this dirty floor. A weak mind for cause. A cause I do not know. Don't know what to live for.
A compliment I've never heard. A comfort I've never felt... it's here, even thought it won't last for long.

Man:
Sit down. Stand up please. Lay down... drink this please. You'll be in peace soon.

A tribe within itself... A vision I will display... To blind the caring. I have regrets.
A tribe within itself... A vision I will display... To blind the caring.
Too late...

I am a cult by definition. I am a friend by first impression.
My task: to recycle this earth. To not repeat human history...
Start from scratch... rid every sound.
Deconstruct... deconstruct all.

I've bid every method into the hands of my employees.
(I am a cult by definition. I am a scientist by default.)
I have saved you.
Now you will follow my journey... my destiny.
Tonight's your death. Resurrect my new you.

I am a cult by definition. I will end this human world.
This world is shit and I have proved this with my followers.
Fuck humanity, end life. You are now dead, and I soon will be.
Disease, injury, madness

Fossil Genera - A Feed from Cloud Mountain

Beyond the satellites:
Sweet candy populous... a worry free entrance into the world's history.
Never underestimate... never think beyond their thoughts.
The satellites have been tapped and Cloud Mountain will carry on the commands of our ancestors.

Indeed we work from here. We have for centuries... hearing every breath... watching every disease.
(You must accept this truth)

Below the satellites:
The leaders are driving to the farthest retreat. Sit back, relax, enjoy the ride.
They have been speaking for years.
Every night while you're asleep they have been discussing what the future holds for us all.
The outer space takeover. Worlds collide in a dreary pre-determined idea brought by our fellow night owls.
Their stories have been mocked... their ideas have been crushed... but after last night they control every idea we will think from here on out.

A government overthrown...

We have come to tell you all that we could have prepared for this.

The night owls speak overhead:
The apocalypse (at least our apocalypse) will happen sooner than we think
if we don't read the journals our station has prepared for you all.
We call ourselves "night owls". We've roamed the earth for years and kept your world afloat.
We've made it so you stay comfortable in your precious homes.

While you sleep, we discuss. Discuss our future... your future.
Our journals give detailed instructions on the machines and weapons we must build.
These are weapons that none of you would even begin to think could harm the outside world...
Everything you know is false... your first instinct is now your last.
Like I said before... we've been discussing and planning this for decades. (Trust is essential)
We don't have time to explain everything, but just know that everything will soon change.

Trust us and we will all be safe. We are the new government.

Before the satellites:
In simple times we must take control.
With simple skies we create... more sky.
A simple land we must change... for man... is god.
How fast we grow...
We must move on.

Desert of Song

The Radios stopped tuning.
This Static is forbidden.
The chords quit strumming...
But we found our new home.

It will rain (falls so slow)
I will rain down here.

The drums quit thumping.
These tones are forbidden.
The throat can't start singing...
The scarecrow is watching.

It will rain (falls so slow)
I will rain down here.

Here, we're awake in the desert of song.
The silence is broken.
Here, we're awake and the silence is broken.
Silence is broken.
Silence is broken.
Here... we... sing...
Sing with the fear.

Fear: the control tower.
The new sun comes by the hour.
Ghosts slowly disappear in the fog...
Silence the suffering.
We've built this age-old sound of song.
Here... we... sing...
Sing with the fear.

Here, we're awake in the desert of song.
The silence is broken.
Here, we're awake and the silence is broken.
Silence is broken.
Silence is broken.
Here... we... sing...
Sing with the fear.

Swim to the Moon

It's been a long night... away from it all
The grabbing authority of my peers...
The rusty cage that never seems to open...
When can I escape? When can I swim to the moon?
I've heard this expression my entire life... never realized how peaceful a statement it is.
All alone on the worlds waters... here i am.
The sun's slowly drifting past the edge of the world... (can't blame our ancestors)
I'm the loneliest boat on this entire body of water.
Rest will give my awakening purpose... this is why I have come here in the first place.
A peace I have never felt... a life I did not want to live.
I will awake through sleep...
The drifting drifter... look into the picture...

(The Foreshadowing)
No more panic, no more regret.
No more hoping for a new mess.

Slide into the water.
Become one with the sea.
Life seems so much smaller.
Swim to the moon.

I awake with a cool breeze blowing through my dirty hair. Rested, stable...
a first. A caffeine junkie's longest wish: peace and quiet...
A strange feeling... suddenly drifting...
No wake-ups, no expectations...

This "as seen on tv" anchor is just another lie I guess...
hoping for something not there, filling a void that I can't quite put my finger on.

This loneliness I always seek. I'm in the middle of black water. No sign of human life in any direction...
the most peaceful event of my life seems to have typically turned into a struggle. I'm in the middle of black water...
no sign of human life. Panic takes over my body.
I have indeed floated due to a non-reversible decision to flee.
Just for a day I told myself...
my survival skills were lost years ago.
Here I am: no food, no clean water, and this extremely embarrassing attempt at a "get away outfit".
This is an inevitable death.

Slide into the water.
Become one with the sea.
Life seems so much smaller.
Swim to the moon.
...look into the picture...
(Worry leaves my body)

This is what I lived to be. This very moment is the first time in my life that I've felt pure joy.

Slide into the water.
Become one with the sea.
Life seems so much smaller.
Swim to the moon.

Finally listened to The Great Misdirect yesterday.  The first listen through, I really didn't like it.  I was disappointed actually.  It appeared to be just a bunch of jamming which is not something I signed up for when it comes to BTBAM.  But after another listen or two, I'm starting to enjoy it.  I don't mind the melodies, but I guess I wasn't expecting the music to sound as it did. Some of it sounds like some band out of the 70s.  Nothing against it but just not what I expected.  I'm sure the album will grow on me some more but I don't see them topping Alaska.

Okay it seems like multiple people are having this reaction but this album is getting better with each listen.  I'm in absolute love with Mirrors though.

I've probably listened to it 25 times now and it still gets better with each listen.

This is the first BTBAM album for which i know every word all the way through.

Can someone post a link to the instrumental version of Alaska? Never heard it.

All Bodies is where it's at.  I absolutely love the way that disc opens with that song.

Complete agreement, one of the best openings I've heard.

I'm going to download SC and S/T today.  I've waited much too long.

My new favourite band. I never really listened to them for a long time. Not sure why...

But now that I've given them a decent listen...so awesome.

the drummer is an absolute machine.

oh shit yeah, this was posted on theprp:

QuoteBetween The Buried And Me's much rumored signing with Metal Blade has been made official with the groups new effort "The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues" set to see a release through the label on April 12th. Previously thought to only be an EP, the official press release on the bands signing refers to "The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues" as an album.

Speaking on their new deal, band guitarist Paul Waggoner offered the following:

"We are delighted in the opportunity to join the Metal Blade family. Their commitment to heavy music over the years is inspiring and we look forward to becoming a part of the ever-growing legacy of the label. Our new release, titled "The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues" will hit the streets in April. We are confident that our dedicated fans will appreciate it and hopeful that we will gain the attention of some new ears as well. In closing, I'd like to reference a quote from the illustrious Joe Dirt: "Life's a garden, dig it."

Just saw them again tonight with The Contortionist and The Faceless. Pretty great show, especially BTBAM, as expected. Played the entire Parallax II plus White Walls. They just keep getting better and better with their live show.
