honestly, I like this band, on record. But I saw them live a few years ago and they were just awful. I don't know they could be one of those bands that just doesn't sound good at all live.

Then again I believe they had a few lineup changes since then. Whatever, Station was a good CD

I still can't believe how much this band has grown. I saw them years ago when they would open for Pelican, and they had NOTHING on Pelican, but man, Station was awesome and now Geneva is even greater. Might be one of my top 10 albums this year.

You guys should check out Dakota/Dakota. They only had 1 album but they were basically the pre-cursor to what became Russian Circles

I remember how I checked out this band a couple of years ago or something. Got Enter and I remember that the first song was pretty alright and was eager to hear the rest. But I also remember that all the songs on the album sounded the same. So I havent listened to it ever since.

I'll check them out again some of these days, I hope I was wrong about them back then as everyone here seems to enjoy them now.

honestly, I love Isis' vocals, screaming and singing.  It really adds atmosphere to their music and the lyrics are insanely fascinating...along with the concepts of each album.

I checked out Geneva. Had the same reaction when I checked these guys out 2 years ago. The album just seemed to drag on, some good points here and there, but very little. I will check these guys again after a couple of more years. I wish I would enjoy them but sadly I do not.

Russian Circles are becoming the new ISIS.

That didn't quite happen, I got to admit. They were on a good way, but then ISIS came back with Wavering Radiant and people were all over it. If I was asked which is the most hyped band on this board in 2010 ( except anything including deftones members ), I'd definitely say ISIS. Big time. In bold font and with tons of exclamation marks. And I'm not saying they're not great, which they are, but it kind of proves to me, too many bands get the recognition they deserve by disbanding and not a second earlier.
Title: Re: Russian Circles
Post by: theis on Dec 07, 2010, 01:53 PM
Eh, I dunno.

Isis has always gotten a lot of recognition for the stuff they did. When people say "post-metal", Isis is pretty much the first thing that comes to mind...for the most part. They've always been a people favorite on this board. Not just in 2010. When a beloved band is breaking up it's bound to get people talking more about the band than usual.

Anyways, a new Russian Circles would be nice!

Theis, are you trying to tell me that Russian Circles do it better than, say, Explosions in the Sky, This Will Destroy You, Mogwai, Godspeed You! Black Emperor or Isis in their best days?

Yeah, Russian Circles are pretty fucking bad ass, but doesn't it sometimes feel pretty formulaic and predictable whereas other bands have their own more distinct sound? Don't get me wrong, I love pretty much everything by Russian Circles but I can't really believe that you, after listening to countless albums, would say that they're THE band.

MUCH LOVE
Title: Re: Russian Circles
Post by: theis on Aug 06, 2016, 08:12 PM
I'm just teasing ya. Personally though, I like Russian Circles more than the bands you mentioned (except Isis, whom I don't really think can be compared).

Russian Circles have a very distinguised sound and Brian Cook is probably in my top 3 favorite bass players. His sound and tone is just massive. Sure, they use the same recipe from album to album, but I still think all their albums are unique in their own way.
Title: Re: Russian Circles
Post by: lostpilot on Aug 08, 2016, 07:45 PM
After giving the album a couple of detailed listening sessions, I like it, but there are some flaws to it in my ears.

It feels more like a palette of sounds, a collage of various rhythms and ideas that follow one direction; there is a togetherness quality to the album but at the same time it's just a little detached. Like, yes, the genre of their music require some detachment but in some parts it feels like the instrumental version of an album which actually features vocals. Not all of it, but there are plenty of spaces for additional instruments etc. So yeah, but I have no doubts that it will sound grand and amazing live, cause these guys are professionals and you can hear it. Still, some moments I felt like something was missing.

Overall, five squirrels out of possible seven
Title: Re: Russian Circles
Post by: Crazylegs on Aug 18, 2016, 12:11 PM
Personally I'd actually put Russian Circles above Explosions in the sky, This will destroy you, and Mogwai. And I'm not sure I agree with them being all that formulaic. And even if you describe it that way, I mean, Explosions in the sky are formulaic as fuck.

I'd say Russian Circles are closer to post metal than anything. They sound good in my ears anyway. This album is on heavy rotation for me.
Title: Re: Russian Circles
Post by: lostpilot on Aug 19, 2016, 07:26 PM
I think what bothers me the most is the composition of the album. It's just not out there enough - technically the band is perfect, the energy is perfect, but the songs are just not that creative or something.

NO HATIN' THO, it's all good

Saw these fools last night. Jeez. SO good. If i have one complaint it's that all my favorites were toward the beginning of the show, so there was a bit of a descending curve as it went on, from my very subjective standpoint. All in all amazing, though. They played Baraka on the projectors, that was pretty captivating as well, worked well with the music.
