Haven't checked the last one yet, but I heard it's pretty good.
Some more stuff later.
I am wondering what is and what is not progressive rock.
Say, Oceansize could be progressive rock, but they themselves hate this tag, so they say they're not.. are TOOL progressive? Porcupine Tree? I always get lost what actually IS progressive rock, cause I listened to many albums where bands say they're progressive, but actually there's nothing progressive there at all.
I am puzzled.
i remember black sabbath quoting a band called gentle giant who they thought were the best prog band out back in the day, i used to have a song from them, it was OK

Oceansize, tool, and porcupine tree aren't exactly the prog stereotype, but their song structures are different from your standard verse/chorus setup which could be seen as a prog element.
i am pretty much into krautrock, sounds way more creative than all other 70s prog, including jazz fusion and all

i've heard some years ago that SOAD was progressive rock... but i have my doubts, would they fit in that category?

I introduced Kingston Wall to my girlfriend and now she's absolutely in love with the band. I'm almost left second... :(
I could probably upload some stuff later when/if I have time.
i would say godspeed you black emporer and similar spin offs like explosions in the sky should be considered as prog rock, i mean gybe starts with like a hobo playing the spoons and ends up with a 40 piece orchestra by the end, that's progressive.

live shows (circa 1970):
QuoteOnce upon a time in Leicester, England, there were seven young musicians; Kay Garrett (vocals), Kip Trevor (vocals, guitar & harmonica), Jess "Zoot" Taylor (organ & piano), Jim Gannon (guitar & vocals), Clive Jones (sax & flute), Bob Bond (bass guitar) & Clive Box (drums & percussion). In the year of our lord, 1966, they formed the band Pesky Gee!. The band made one album for "Pye", "Exclamation Mark" (1969), before reforming without Garret as Black Widow in 1970. CBS become the bands new label. The group played a wild orgiastic, black mass oriented rock, much in the footstep of their colleagues Black Sabbath.
Click to enlargeThe band had a small amount of success with "Come To The Sabbat", taken off their first LP Sacrifice (1970). The band had an extravagant mystic show (centred on the female demon Astaroth and choreographed by members of Leicester's Phoenix Theatre Company) and outrageous effects. The live show initially featured the mock sacrifice of a nude woman, which in itself, was enough to cause uproar in the press, and coupled with the fact that they were receiving advice on the art of witchcraft from Alex Sanders, the self professed "King Of The Witches" - the Sunday tabloids had a field day!
Early concerts were attended by priests waving crosses in the air, warning those attending to the inherent dangers of witchcraft and Black Widow. Religious fanatics would preach at the waiting queues urged on by journalists looking for a story. The news writer Paul Green said that the Black Widow music and stage show was not an example of Satanism, but more an example of Satanic bad taste.
The debut album reached the number 32I like it! (or 34?) in the U.K. charts. The group toured throughout Europe and appeared at the Isle of Wight Festival of 1969 and 1970.
Gannon and Trevor later worked on a abortive project to turn the Black Widow stage show into a Broadway musical.
Before Sacrifice, the group had in 1969 recorded the "same" record with Kip Trevor and Kay Garret (from Pesky Gee!) on vocals. The master tapes remained in the possession of band member Clive Jones and have not been heard until now, when it has been released as 'Return to the Sabbat' on Mystic Records.
By their second album Black Widow (1971) the band had pulled away from their Black Magic influences, hoping to widen their appeal, but received less response. Black Widow had a different line-up on each of their albums: Jeff Griffith replaced Bond, Romeo Challenger filled in for Box and John Culley (ex-Cressida) took over Gannon's guitar duties. Check this 'Black Widow ready reference chart' if you are interested in Black Widows different line-ups.
The Band received barely any interest from international music press, if any at all, yet become nonetheless a definite part of the early seventies "Heavy Rock Occult Wave".
Their third album, Black Widow III, came out in 1972. With songs like The Battle (a antiwar song) and The Sun (a hymn to the sun) it stood very clear that the group had left the dark domains and become more commercial. The record received critics in the European press. In fact Black Widow was more successful in countries like Italy, Sweden, Germany, France, Austria and Netherlands, than in the United Kingdom.
By the summer of 1972, the impetus was beginning to drain from Black Widow. The band were tired, dispirited, and without a record label, having been dropped by CBS.
With the future looking increasingly bleak Black Widow entered D.T. Studios in Kettering to begin recording their fourth album (Black Widow IV). The irony of the situation was that the band, due to the circumstances prevailing at the time, were left to produce the new record them self, something they had always requested in the past, but always been refused. The end result was that the band recorded, by far, their strongest album - but it was never to see the light of day until now (thanks to Mystic Records and Clive Jones).
Shortly after "Black Widow IV" was recorded Kip Trevor left the band to be replaced by an American singer called Rick "E". The last four songs on the album are demos put together by the band at that time. Like the fourth album, nothing was ever to be done with them - until now!! (Thanks again Mystic Records and Clive Jones!)
After Black Widow Gannon went to play with songwriter Kenny Young in Fox (1975), Dave Cartwright and Alice Cooper (1976) and Yellow Dog (1977) before joining Sherbet and moving to Australia where he leads a club band called "Bop till you drop". Trevor worked as a session singer and music publisher while Challenger plays drums for "Showaddywaddy". (If anyone knows what the others are doing, please let me know!)

OSI - Blood
Genre: Progressive Metal
OSI or Office of Strategic Influence is the superband led by Fates Warning guitarist Jim Matheos and ex Dream Theater keyboardist Kevin Moore. The act is more of a side project where both get together and melt in the pot their style into the already trademark sound this band owns. Incisive Metal riffing and vast electronic backgrounds in an obscure atmosphere is what we hear from this band. The peculiar voice from Moore is also key to the group's original sound.
Blood is their 3rd full album. Difference with the previous is the presence of Porcupine Tree's Gavin Harrison, as in all the other Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy took the role. The song Stockholm also features Opeth's Mikael Akerfeldt voice.

insanely awesome one man instrumental "percussive, poly rhythmic progressive metal" band. i would compare his stuff to a more melodic mastodon or messugah. all his music is available to download for free from his myspace page.

i've always found Isis pretty proggy but the whole progressive genre is too wide to really define. it's all just personal opinion. and the amount of sub-genres for prog rock is insane. my personal top prog band would be porcupine tree and i know nobody will agree with me but i find coheed and cambria quite progressive. but yeah. almost any outside the lines music these days can be prog.

King fuckin' Crimson!
What's the best King Crimson album to start with?
I'm only about a minute into "The Escape Artist" by OSI and I'm digging this so far.
"In the court of the crimson king". No doubt about it.

this is what everyone usually says, as a matter of fact 90% of my friends who say they LOVE KC only own this album. They're sound has changed so much over time, I'd actually suggest checking out:
Red [1974]
Discipline [1981]
The Power to Believe [2003]

This band is amazing. Tosin Abasi has got some skills.
Periphery is also a pretty cool prog metal band (bordering the extreme) that I discovered together with Animals As Leaders. I'm just bummed that they chose to go with an emo-sounding vocalist. Still, the instrumental version of their S/T is great. If not for it, I'd probably not be listening to them. I'm a fan of Meshuggah, so the heavy use of polyrhythms is very welcome.
Anathema are amazing.
Porcupine Tree would have to be my favorite Prog band of all time. Anathema are great too.
I got a random invite from this band's page on youtube. They are called Enochian Theory, really good stuff. They're fairly new, started in '04, and have 1 ep and 1 album so far.

So, I'm late (around 50 years late pretty much), but I didn't know about this band, and I really like this song (Cream - White Room)...

gotta love Cream. Their greatest hits is a necessity. "Hush" is another great one, along with "Wrapping Paper"
not to mention Crossroads done live...Jack Bruces bass solo is beasty:

Cool. Other than a few songs i haven't heard spids nøgenhat any, i'll have to check them out.
I've been really into De underjordiske lately, and Causa Sui, but Papir are probably my favorite.
