Title: The Great Unknown Bands -thread
Post by: An bád dubh on Mar 19, 2009, 08:20 AM
Well, this thread is started mainly because I just can't seem to find a suitable topic for the stuff I want to upload or post links to. Also, this thread is for all those unknown bands that we all have in our collections. Surely some other people know about the bands as well but not as many as you think should know about them. So the purpose is to bring new bands and albums to people. If you think a band is not well known, you are probably right, and if you think and a band is already known by everyone, you are most probably right as well.

I had a request on some Trip Hop bands so I'm gonna concentrate my uploads/links on them in the beginning, along with other stuff that I enjoy. I hope other people will post their great unknown bands in this thread as well!

Here we go:

Bonobo - Live Sessions EP (2005)
Definition: GREAT Downbeat/Trip Hop
http://rapidshare.com/files/71580082/Bonobo_-_Live_Sessions_EP__Ninja_Tune_.rar

Rofrigo y Gabriela - Rodrigo y Gabriela (2006)
Definition: Instrumental/Flamenco, not your typical Flamenco though, a great album
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=mdujhb9f

The Stiletto Formal - ¡Fiesta Fiesta Fiesta Fiesta! (2008)
Definition: Experimental/Progressive, posted on the Prog rock thread but was taken so well that I'll post it again here
http://www.mediafire.com/?zqngzhykkjy

Well, those 3 just to get this thread started. I don't want to suffocate you people by posting 10 albums at once. Even 3 new albums takes time to listen to. I'll post more probably in the beginning of next week.

And if you have some music to post, I hope you do! It's always great to hear new music.

edit. posted a better quality link for Rodrigo y Gabriela

Bonobo is a Brighton boy. Automatically makes him a bit of a legend.

Animal Magic by Bonobo is also a fantastic album.

I'd say Crystal Antlers.

I did upload their EP here, in the D&R thread, and now their new album - Tentacles is out, which is also very nice. Genre? noisy garage rock, I'd say.

i thinks we have made enough separations of music in our board. we dont really need this one, wheter a band is unknown or not.

who cares? and what will be the next difference we find and make?

a thread just for 3-member-bands?

A thread for 3-member-bands... taht would be kinda cool actually hehe. Umm, isn't Volta Do Mar a 3 piece? Actually a 3 piece with 2 basses! They are great, I shall upload an album by them one day soon.

Oh, I shall dig out that Crystal Antlers EP from the D&R thread. And the Kay Kay and his Weathered Underground sounds like nothing I've heard before so I thank you for bringing it to my and other people's attention. I shall give it a closer listen later. Do they have any albums out?

Anyways, Nailec, this thread is for finding new, great bands. For me new and great bands usually mean that they are bands which I have never heard before thus they should be fairly unknown. This thread is basically also because I can not find anything from the Download and Request thread, or from the It Leaked thread. There is lots of great music there but it gets lost with so many albums and bands so I got frustrated with it and havent been there pretty much in 6 months or even a year now, can't remember..

I also enjoy music from pretty much all genres and my music taste is sadly too broad for me to just stick to let's say to the Hardcore, Metalcore, Grindcore, Screamo -thread which is 415 pages long. Damn, I wish I could enjoy these genres that much as I would just be able to download a new album from that thread every day. It would be awesome, no kidding. I'm glad that I do enjoy some artists from these genres, not enough though, so if anyone has any suggestions it would be great!

Man, I shouldn't explain myself but to say it in a nutshell: I don't really care much for Genres, but genres and differentiations help people find music which they presumably like. It's disappointing to get disappointed constantly with an album that one downloads or buys. That is why we all come to these threads on this Sharinglungs board, in order to get recommendations from fans of a band that we all have at one point loved and adored, as they probably have even some similarities in their musical tastes. Also, this thread is for all genres and it is specific enough in order for people to hopefully find new music through it and I think that's why it's important.

Subheim - Approach

http://rapidshare.com/files/196860121/Subheim_-_2008-Approach__-___experimentalrock.wordpress.com__.rar

This album was released last year and is an IDM/Down-Tempo album I guess, but I've heard nothing like it before. It gets me everytime I listen to it. The production is amazing, the drums, the pads and the vocals. Even if this doesn't sound like your thing I highly recommend it.

Blackfilm - Blackfilm

http://rapidshare.com/files/119803863/Blackfilm2008_triphopx.wordpress.rar

The Blackfilm project presents us a pleasurable experimental triphop sound on it's debuting album that moves in between the dark idm/electronica influences from Future Sound of London in the Dead Cities times, the triphop and dub sounds from Amon Tobin or Portishead and film noir soundtracks that could have come from David Lynch movies. Blackfilm manages to connect dramatic classical moments with strings, flutes and apocalyptic haunting ambient to downtempo as well as breakbeat rhythms. Tracks such as 'Interference' and 'Sonar' stay relatively close to the grooving triphop sound from the 90's, yet added idm and neoclassical influences ensure the sound is up-to-date. The special aspect of this recording is that it recalls more than once strong associations with FSOL and this could be taken as a huge compliment. Especially 'Come & See' and 'Stalingrad' reflect this in the sound and this makes these, together with the oriental sounding 'Mahabharata' which has splendid female chants and heavy bass beats, the highlights of this cinematographic example of dark electronics. Blackfilm delivers with a stunningly beautiful debut.

Burial - Untrue

http://rapidshare.com/files/73597257/burial_-_untrue_2007.rar

This can't even be explained. There is nothing like this out there. This album is near enough on repeat for me the whole time. It's so dreamy and life like and is full of emotional nostalgic moments. Best listened to with headphones whilst walking home late at night :) IDM meets Dubstep meets Garage? haha forget the genres, just listen!

Just to let you know, none of the above I posted are "bands" they are all one man projects.

More than 2 years ago, damn.
Anyways, man, could you upload Crystal Antlers, the EP or the album. The links on Download and Request board are dead and I can not seem to find anything by them through Google. I'm interested to hear them.

Judging by those album descriptions, I have high hopes for all of those 3 albums!
I love Trip Hop and anything close to it so I shall give all of those a try. Oh, and most one man projects are pretty great in this genre.

Also, IDM is a totally new concept for me, I'm looking forward to hear how it sounds! I shall start with Subheim and save the other 2 albums for the end of the week :) Thanks for the recommendations!

Okay, so I listened to Subheim. Definitely an album that I need to listen to more than a few times before I can say anything definite about it. You were right for me as well when you said that you haven't heard nothing like it before. Same here. But I'm not sure is it good or bad just yet. The album had a very distinctive feel to it, a lot of atmosphere if I could say so. There were also a lot quiet and slow parts, during some I wished that the song would pick up. Maybe the whole album was a bit too slow paced for my liking at the moment. "Howl" and "Away" were the highlights of the album for me though.

Overall, like you said, the production is great. I need to give the album another try some time later, maybe put on my headphones and go for a walk like you recommended for Burial. And who knows, maybe I'm just not ready for this kind of music yet, I need to grow into it rather than it needs to grow on me. So I will save it in my music files and return to it at some point.

I'll try Blackfilm next, probably on friday or during the weekend. I have also a few other albums that I need to check out but I'll just save those for later 8)

There's always such a fine line between good and annoying vocals. Some bands sound great but the vocals turn me off so much that I just can't listen to it. Good vocals make the band and I'm always happy if I enjoy the vocals. I love the vocals on The Stiletto Formal though.  By the way man, I'm still waiting for the Crystal Antlers :)

Well, the EP was alright. The vocals turned me off in the beginning and continued to do that afterwards as well. The vocals had its good moments as well and so did the music. The music was at times good at times it didn't really do much for me. I'll download their new album though, just to see if they've progressed from what the EP was. Overall, this band reminds me of a band called Facing New York. In some ways at least. They're great by the way. But I gotta listen to Crystal Antlers new album, to see what it's like. I can see why you would like Crystal Antlers though, they have something that grabs you in a way. But maybe not my cup of tea.

Wax Tailor - Hope & Sorrow
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=f9kv0t5f
Trip Hop/Hip Hop by a French guy Jean-Christophe Le Saoût.

Awesome Trip Hop/Hip Hop with great beats, great melodies, some female vocals, female and male rappers and samples from movies. Something that you've probably never heard before, I hope you enjoy it.

Facing New York - Facing New York
http://www.filestube.com/e11260a091d2781e03e9/go.html
Experimental/Indie Rock with beautiful melodies and intriguing song structures. They could become something great.

This band is also fairly unknown, currently on hiatus but I hope they return. Not sure which band to compare them to, musically I find similarities to For The Mathematics.

Thanks for the tips man!

You know I have that Division Day album but it's just one of those albums which I didnt have time to properly check out. Gonna give it a better listen, listening to it now again. Also, I downloaded the Bedroom Heroes album a couple of times before but both times got this error while unzipping it so I figured I'm not gonna find a working version of it. Found it now again, I'll download it again and hope that this version works.

The other albums I shall check out as well. I'll give you my thoughts on all that I will enjoy.  Division Day sounds good at the moment, this band reminds me of Facing New York as well for some reason. Check it out if you didnt. Oh, and if you downloaded Bonobo and Wax Tailor, what did ya think of them?

Edit: Heh, I found the Bedroom Heroes from my computer from 2007, so I got it working during those error messages anyways. Now that I listen to it again I remember how I used to listen to it before. A great album that's for sure.

wither-I, Omatic sounds great man! Amazingly chaotic like you said, but manages to impress with everything that's going on. The vocals are great, the guitars and the drums too, thanks for the recommendation man! I don't really know which bands to compare this band to, this is something totally different. It's a great feeling when all the songs on the album catch you off guard and you just have to wait what's gonna happen next. Brilliant!

An bád dubh, you never found me a band I was asking for :P
desert-ish dredg-ish progressive rock.
dredg is just not enough.
could be with links to stoner/psychedelic rock whatever. I believe you know bands like that
Oh, sorry bro, I thought it was just a joke hehe. But now that I know that it is not, I shall deliver, I promise you that! I still have to decide what you mean by desert-ish, heh, but I think I have a band that will fit your desciption. I'll post something tomorrow evening.

wither-I, Omatic sounds great man! Brilliant!
im glad you enjoy it!
do you have anymore of "facing new york" im in love and would appreciate anything and everything from them! i went on their myspace and i like the other tracks that i heard! thanks again bro

Their new album "Get Hot"

This band is pretty amazing. The new album is something different, has also the songs that you listened to from Myspace.

The Selftitled is still by far my favorite album by them, the new one is fun to listen to but the selftitled had something epic going on.

I can see why you say that in a way. Also, there is actually only one band and one album you need to hear. There are more but this one I believe will fit your need of desert-ish dredg-ish progressive rock. This album pretty much defines progressive rock even though it is not as heavy as most progressive rock album. This is more like indie rock with actually that desert-ish vibe you wish to have. An album I forgot for a long time until last week got around to listen to it again because of this thread.

This was already recommended by Fireal but I'll post it now with a link, so here ya go:

Bedroom Heroes - Sea Change (2001)
http://rapidshare.com/files/75872989/_2001Sea_change.rar

Such a chill album with lots of diversity, vocals to match that of Dredg's, and on top of all, all the songs on the album are great and surprising. I can't believe this band parted ways after a debut album like this.

Oceansize is one of those bands which I've never gotten into. I've given them a chance over and over again but they just don't do anything to me. I could have something similar though, I'll give Oceansize another try in a few days to see which band or album album to consider similar to those songs you mentioned.

maybe you were listening not to their best album. I'd personally say this: first of all try downloading 'Everyone into Position' but do not listen to the whole album. Just listen to 'Music for a Nurse' which is freaking amazing. And then listen to 'Effloresce'. Because imo this is their best, 'Frames' isn't even close to being as good as 'Effloresce'

I have all their stuff, and I actually in the beginning even enjoyed those songs you mentioned earlier but overall all their stuff just feels a bit blunt and plain to me. I get the same feeling while listening to their stuff that I get when listening to Tool. Another band which I've failed to enjoy. But I shall try the way you suggested bro.

Well.. you know I'll say that Lateralus by TOOL is a masterpiece, right? ;)

Title: Re: The Great Unknown Bands -thread
Post by: An bád dubh on Apr 25, 2009, 09:32 AM
I agree man. TOOL has many great pieces but I just always seem to go for the bands that remind me a lot of TOOL and end up enjoying them much more than I actually enjoy TOOL. Maybe that is the reason why I cant enjoy TOOL, many otehr bands just do the same thing but in a much more diverse way.

And on a side note, I am sure that I will get into Oceansize some day, they have a lot of things going on that I enjoy, but as I overall can enjoy just a few Post rock albums as of now, I just need to wait for the right time guess. And oh, now that I actually realised how Post rock'ish Oceansize actually is, I have lots of stuff that's similar hehe.

Something similar to Oceansize:

Aereogramme - My Heart Has A Wish That You Would Not Go
http://rapidshare.com/files/14089292/Aereogramme_-_My_Heart_Has_A_Wish_That_You_Would_Not_Go.rar

As of now I enjoy this band more than Oceansize, even though they have many similarities. Maybe Aereogramme is a bit more accessible in a way. Being accessible is not always a good thing though, many albums or artists which are very accessible from the beginnign usually just end up being not listened to very often. The ones that take time to start enjoying are usually the opposite, they're the one that you dig up over and over again when you finally start enjoying them.

Post by: lostpilot on Apr 25, 2009, 10:27 AM
eh.. well, my ex-girlfriend always told me to listen to this one, and I never did.. I will download, though I cannot grant you I'll like it. Just cause I know my ex likes it very very much. Exactly this album. Ghhr.

Anyways, yes, I like how Oceansize have some post-rock "mentions" in their music.. songs like Women Who Like Men Who Like Drugs.. purely post-rock'ish I'd say. even though post-rock as a label is highly misused today. Only by the original definition (of 'Hex' by Bark Psychosis) can really give the understanding what post-rock is. Generally it's using rock for non-rock purposes if you may say. This means, deconstructing the typical rock tradition and reconstructing it in a different, more complex manner. For example - the first elements of post-rock and this transformation contained the lenght of songs (breaking the laws of typical 3-4 minute song) and the structure of the songs (no verse-chorus-verse-chorus-breakdown type of songs). Therefore even going by these first elements many bands that claim to be 'post-rock' are not really that 'post-rock'. People feel that 'post-rock' tag is much more attractive, interesting and makes you more 'unique' and 'authentic' than 'instrumental indie'.

Me and my friends, that play in a band usually discuss the genre we're playing. By most of the rules we actually fall into category of 'post-rock', but then to compare we have a side project, which is purely indie instrumental - while the other popular 'post-rock' bands self-tag it as 'post-rock'.

So in response to Oceansize being post-rockish, yeah, I have to definitely agree with this - just look at songs like 'Massive Bereavement' or 'Music for a Nurse' or 'Women Who Love Men Who Love Drugs'. Definitely overlapping themes etc so post-rock. But it's just one of the many genre elements in their music. generally I think they should be tagged as 'new age/progressive'.

Anyway, enough of me talking stuff, lol

Lostpilot, I like your trail of thought. You are wise in music. Maybe in real life too hehe.

So you and your friends have a band? Damn son, I'm so jealous. I play the guitar myself and would love to some day be in a band. The problem is that none of my friends play any instruments. There is only one French guy who I used to hand around with in The Netherlands while I was there and play the guitar until late morning. But damn, no one to play with here in the dark and cold country of Finland. All the great songs in my mind go to waste as I cant make the songs sound like I imagine them in my head with just the guitar. Well, maybe some day I shall be able to create some beautiful music myself as well, and not just listen to it hehe.

But yeah, as far as Post rock goes, the tag has always had a sort of an aversive influence on me. The first bands I listened to back in the days which were said to be Post rock bored the shit out of me and I still propabbly suffer a bit from my first encounters with the genre. Now I see though that there is more inside this genre, and I'll probably dig into it a little more when I have the time.

Heh, and you dont need to like Aereogramme. There's a fine line between bands that sound similar to each other. One band sounds brilliant while the other one sounds like everything you've heard before. Thats why we ask for recommendations and try lots of bands to see if we like them. I hope you like it though.
Title: Re: The Great Unknown Bands -thread
Post by: lostpilot on Apr 25, 2009, 01:09 PM
I will probably listen to it on tonight's evening.. evenings are best to discover new music.

For the band stuff.. well, you would not believe how we formed. I always was the person playing with guitar, writing songs, experimenting etc, but noone around me shared this interest in creating music, therefore I was alone for quite while. Until I came across the fact, that one of my friends, Lauras, secretly composes songs as well. So we got together and at the first time we had such nice time! Song creation was like - I come with my idea, he reproduces it in a totally different way and we're both in awe what a good song came out of it. So we composed songs for about a year, when we just randomly met my acquaintance who plays saxophone/cello. And we just said - so yeah, we're composing some music, she said she's interested, and then we just.. well, got together.

Then the bassist and drummer.. they were acquaintainces of Lauras, in the beginning we just needed one person to play what we tell him to play (on bass), so we offered one of them a possibility of playing with us. but generally just playing what was already written. And after some time we just became friends with the guy, who was friends with the current bassist, and we all just.. sort of got together. And now we're having amazingly good time in our studio/rehearsal room, playing quite many shows (3-4 per month), people are interested in us. We always provide visual aids in the show, cropped legal video samples whatever, mostly with some nature or something, and usually of a nice vintage quality. Then our other friend, who is a modern dance dancer just.. well, popped into our performance through and idea of mixing music and modern dance. So here we are, a five person full band (god I still cannot believe I managed to form a FULL band) presenting their sonic experiments (we have material for two albums now.. recording in winter I guess) mixed with visuals and modern dance.

God. I love my life these days ;)

And I guess I am in the mood of writing today. An bád dubh, one rule - never give up. Right people will come, in time :)

I found out about this french band called Demians through last.fm yesterday. This is what Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree and Blackfield had to say about their debut release:

"One of the most assured and accomplished debut albums I've ever heard, the textures and dynamics within the music are breathtaking. A must for everyone that appreciates the art of epic and ambitious 21st century rock music"

I'm really enjoying this album after a few listens. I would highly recommend it to anyone into bands like porcupine tree, oceansize, opeth and the like.

i do agree with you as well on oceansize. when i listen to it, it osunds like something I "should" like, but i just cant get into it that much...effloresce is good and have enjoyed it in the past, but not much of a lasting record in time with me...

i have a recommendation, some of you may have heard of already. they are a band that hails jackson/oxford mississippi, and beig regional they have much dark and bluesy feel to their music.

i would describe them as just that, Bluesy, dark, progressive  rock. very gritty and real sounding, and angelic all the same.
both the Ep and album are very good. the album is actually my pick for 2008's best. with the EP being heavier than the LP.

Just to get up to date with this thread, I checked some of Fireal1222's suggestions. Well, first of all the 2 albums that I already had but had also forgotten, albums by Division Day and Bedroom Heroes were great. They both are awesome in their own way.

Checked out A Northern Chorus and A Whisper In the Noise as well. Both had their moments and I will return to both some day to give them another try, but at the same time both of them draggeg on a bit and simply bored me. The album by A Whisper In The Noise got better towards the end of the album. Otherwise the albums didn't really do much for me. I'll keep them though, they'll get another chance.

I still need to check out bohren & der club of gore as well as laura which you posted also.

Checked out some time ago also Shun - Michael in Reign EP posted by Jani. This was cool. An emotional album with a lot of substance.

I used to have something by them a long long time ago but I didn't enjoy them at all back then. Well, the years have gone by, could you suggest an album by them?

Menos el Oso or Highly Refined Pirates.
though my favourite is the Beer Commercial EP. (They Make the Beer Commercials Like This EP)

The band before Minus The Bears, Sharks Keep Moving, is also worth checking out since it's a lot of the same sound as MTB.

I didn't see your initial question awe

The one band that I can say is extremely close to MTB would be Foals.

well, ben, Foals are a bit different.. at least I find them different.
I quite like 'Antidotes', but yet Minus the Bear is more of a live band - I mean less indietronica whatever. And Foals are packed with tons of synthetic sounds: )

In regard to this post. Well, received the results from teh Swedish University yesterday, so I am moving there for 2 years now! :) Here's to hope that the Swedish people are my type of people, just playing guitar and listening to music and all that.

Hey everyone! Have been really busy so I havent posted for a while!.. I just got to this thread and I'm super happy about it! : )

1. Firstly Bonobo.. I've been listening to the whole discography as a whole for ages now! I think if you like any particular album you'll every other song theyve made for sure! So whoever likes bonobo get the rest! : ) Bonobo music is super pure, uplifting when you need, good to sleep to when you need sleep, nostalgic if youre feeling so...absolutely one of my favourites.

2. Kay Kay and his weathered underground..funfun..but i feel like i could get sick of this very soon. *shrug* the first 3 songs on myspace were very cool and then i didnt like his typical vocal melody. I think im having problems when he tries to sing high..but the guitar bits are catchy!

3. I'm absolutely and positively in love with Parting song for the torn sky by Crystal Antlers (played on repeat 10 times on myspace already) : D :D thank youu thank youu The rest of the songs are awesome too but the ep is downloading as i type this so when im done getting really into it ill gush about it more : ) Theyre nothing like Mars Volta! ben!

4.Starz: listened to some of black film..i totally judged it as boring at first but when i stopped thinking about it fit really well as background music though i feel like  the pregnant pauses were about to burst and they were just procrastinating on getting it going; ) some of the songs are absolutely beautiful.(read: mahabharata) though the other ones i need to be in the *right mood* to listen to it. Subheim and burial are downloading as i type this! : ) I have an feeling that these albums will be reserved for when im melancholic and dreamy. Thanks!

5.Currently downloading as i type: Facing New York  and Sunny day real estate... I have no idea what to expect here!

My recommendation is Bluetech: Prima Materia...Its bluetechs first album in 2003. Theyre kind of known but for those who havent heard im posting their album here!

They are downtempo, ambient but anything but boring. Very striking melodies, and dont have extended silences at all. Bluetech is inspired by Shulman which i love as well..Has anyone heard of any of these? Everyone I know who likes Bonobo likes these though theyre arent anything like eachother.

Just to list what I still havent checked out from this thread:

Bohren & der Dlub of Gore
Laura
Demians
Colour Revolt
Natasha Khan
Minus the Bear
Redjetson
Bluetech

Yeah, so I'm still partly on page 2 of the thread hehe. But I shall catch up probably during the summer. And in that order too this time! But I do still have my new albums to check out from my favorite bands -list which has gone down to 13 bands, although the number pretty much stays the same as new bands come in while some are checked out. So not sure when I'm done with the list above. But it's great to have lots of bands to check out which are at least supposed to be somewhat great.

I shall also present some new bands, of which some come from my 0-vote Draft top 10 -list, so don't expect much of them I guess hehe. Nah, they'll be cool for some I'm sure.

This is my own upload and is highly recommended. Down-tempo, ambient type music. 'A Mission To Prague' is a great song.

Arms And Sleepers - Black Paris 86

QuoteArms & Sleepers began one night in the back of an ambulance in Cambridge, MA.  In an alleyway a man was bleeding with a cassette player in hand, the play button still on.  What sounded like recordings of a gospel choir blared from the tin speaker, while down the street a jazz band could be heard.  The man was dying.  He dropped the cassette player on the cement and closed his eyes, the sound carrying through the air into his ears for one last time.  Though this moment in time died with him, his cassette lived on — and Arms & Sleepers was born.

Through Arms & Sleepers, Max Lewis (programming, keyboards) and Mirza Ramic (bass, keyboards) keep spirit and the music of that night alive.  Utilizing electronic sources as the main focus in their compositions, the two create warm tides of sound set atop ambient undercurrents. Varying configurations of rich, brassy textures, choppy beats and ethereal vocals yield an engaging, subterranean pulse driven by amorphous low-end frequencies. Overall the sound matches the intentional tragic tale.  The duo's live performance is combined with visuals by talented Boston artist Dado Ramadani.  The visuals are subjectively selected and synchronized perfectly with the rhythm of each song, providing the audience with a complete audio and visual experience.

Persistent international touring and constant dissemination of their sounds makes Arms & Sleepers a worthy opponent for the typical temporal constraints that can befall a band.  Having issued a series of limited edition releases and the well-received Bliss Was it in That Dawn to be Alive EP (Fake Chapter) in 2007, Black Paris '86 is their debut full-length on Expect Candy Records (DE).  A tight and intense record, listening to it feels like sitting in a cinema, watching landscapes, beauty and tragedy - feeling warm and safe while a hint of mystery seems to whisper that not everything is ok out there.

Suffocate for Fuck Sake – Blazing Fires and Helicopters on the Frontpage of the Newspaper. There's a War Going On and I'm Marching in Heavy Boots [2008]

1. Blue Lights and Sunshine
2. I Got Worried...I Was So Freaking Scared of That Window, You Know
3. We Are Driving Through Darkness
4. Twenty-Six and Full of Plans
5. A Japanese Flag
6. I Keep My Eyes on the Ground, Afraid of Meeting Someone I Know
7. Empty
8. They Try to Cheer Me Up By Saying I Did Once Live a Functioning Life

QuoteA unique and stunning work that I must liken to the epic scope of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and emotional intensity of Envy, this must be heard by anyone that has an appreciation for either of those bands and/or the genres that they have mastered and sit atop. This is a concept album that follows a Swedish girl reflecting back on her time in a mental institution with help from her mother, a friend, and a doctor. The story is handled by spoken word from all three characters, as well as clean and screamed vocals.

There is nothing pretentious or gimmicky about what this band has done here, though some will (and already have) label it as such. If making an attempt to create something true and original is 'pretentious' to you, I'd suggest giving up on music altogether. Because the band are in fact from Sweden, the aforementioned spoken word parts are in Swedish. If you find yourself enjoying the album but frustrated by the fact that you do not understand the language, you could always order the album; a silly idea, I know! The band put a full English translation in the booklet.

If sixty-seven minutes of crushing, glimmering beauty sounds like something you'd enjoy, go ahead and find this album as soon as possible. If you cannot find it, I would be happy to send it to you via digital format. A band like this deserves some goddamn recognition.

Good to see you too guys  :)

And I've just had a very busy beginning to my MBA studies.. With all the paperwork, rental issues, meeting new people from the university and lots of school work, I just haven't had time to write here at all. I check in here a few times a week though just to see what's up.

As for music recommendations, well I reorganised my music archives before I came here, and did indeed find some great stuff there that I had forgotten. I'll share that later when I have the time to look into them.

Oh, and as a last excuse, I have been improving a lot on my guitar so it takes time from other things, AND I have started to play poker again after a few years  ;) Shit, and Finnish hockey season is starting next week, damn. But I'll be around for sure.

hello, class!

today we're gonna learn about some kick-ass music.

1. This Is Our Punk-Rock, Thee Rusted Satellites Gather + Sing

Yes, kids, yes. Finally. To be honest sometime ago when I was stealing the internets I never noticed this ASMZ album. It just ran through my eyes and never ended up in my discography. So when I found it I was quite surprised that there actually is an album I do not know about. Surprising! The album itself.. I was carried away easily by the compelling fa-so-la intro, the tape-like atmosphere throughout the album and somewhat typical ASMZ emotional strength of the album. This masterpiece explodes with sincerity and pure yet unstable emotion. "Everybody gets a little lost sometimes". Cryworthy.

2. Horses in the Sky

Yes, kids, yes. Finally x2. This album - when I once listened to it - gave me the chills. The problem was that those chills were highly negative. I pretty much disliked the album very much, it seemed too folky for me..and then once again the divine intervention with a probable explosion of "ready" mood (this happens all the time when hungover or similarly under the influence) and it started to charm me with ASMZish sincerity. Major standout - Mountains Made of Steam. Instant love.

3. The amazing Motek and their Port Sunshine.

Even though I somewhat destroyed this album by having a wrong track order, still, not what I expected. The first impressions were of a quite typical post-rock band with somewhat edge and upbeat feeling, but all the other tracks mesmerized me with their depressive (not too far out) stance. Everyone is whining about the vocals. I like them. I like imperfect things, I like honest things. This falls under that category. Highly recommended.

4. A different collision of sounds, called Radius System.

Far From Truth was exceptional - close to Vessels' glorious Yuki with it's piano driven emotionally charged rock. Then the other tracks of the band proved them to be much more versatile - even stretching out to screamo-ish part of the music world, enjoying their noisy screams and pure emotion breaking through highly distorted guitars. Then again, songs like Impulsion (both parts) tracks you back to slowcore and highly emotional sincerity.

5. Somewhere Between The Sun and The Moon by Wixel.

Prejudice is a very challenging thing - that's just a fact. Two Old Songs was highly enjoyable yet some information reached me, as if this EP was totally different from everything else by this somewhat acoustic/electronica/post band. So when I started listening to this album I only noticed the somewhat dullness of acoustic guitars - and even the soundscapes where just too familiar (as in the EP). But then again, I gave it some time and it paid off. Great ambience, great somewhat sterile signature. Nice find, psychedeliclife.

6. Crippled Black Pheonix.. could be the next best thing.

It's a rarity, finding a band with such diverse songs and overall feeling. I found some evident desert-ish almost stoner rock-ish riffs, ambience, post-rock vibes, general alternative rock vibes (which is not bad when you put it in this context). You can find pretty much everything here, including the quite annoying pieces of a marching band of a circus. yes, that part is quite irritating. Still, this is a very promising band with quite a clear fixed greatness. Looking forward to excavating even more.

7. Jóhann Jóhannsson.

My final weapon against my sleep is Fordlândia. Somewhat ambient somewhat contemporary classical - this is a great treat to your chilly nights and evenings with tea. I am not fully through the album but it sounds really promising. Just relax and (day)dream.

upcoming trials:
Heart
Bob
A Love of Shared Disasters
Palace Of The Night Skies
Let Airplanes Circle Overhead

and yes, I missed a free Codes In The Clouds show today. yay

Blindspot, Jakob and Shihad.

All New Zealand bands that would have been huge overseas but the New Zealand music market is way to small for such bands to make a living here.

Bummer.

Could you name your favorite album by all four bands? So that I can go get some of that stuff. They all sound like something I wanna dig into a bit more. I do have Welcome to Sky Valley by Kyuss and I thought I had some stuff by Jacob but I guess not...

No probs dude.

There's a Jakob thread in the downloads section atm but let me know if any links are dead.I'd go with Subset of Sets.

The best Shihad album in my opinion is Killjoy and Blindspot's would be their self-titled debut. If you have any issues tracking them down let me know and I'll up them for you.

you guys heard of korn? don't think they're that well known. you could say they play metal, but like you know a modern version of it. hell, let's call it nu-metal. anyway they're pretty awesome, check 'em out!

ps. the singer sings about his childhood, it's pretty rad. .ds

I'd like to inform you about a band from my neck of the woods, called Kvelertak (translation: chokehold).

they call their music "Necro'n'roll", and it's basically a mix between elements from black metal and pop rock.
Here's a single from their upcoming debut album, the track is called Mjød.

Gotta bumb this thread because I still havent checked out all the stuff mentioned in it. Im ashamed to say that I still havent even checked out the 5 recommendations by firelyry from back in May... Theres probably other stuff I havent checked either, so maybe my motivation to check them will come back if I see this thread every day on the front page.

Probably its just the Album Weeks bringing so much stuff weekly that I cant get myself to check out anything else. Does anyone else feel exhausted with all the new stuff coming from all directions? Im still loving it though :)

Oh, and Im saving my next new album recommendations for my week of the Album Week by the way  ;) Just checked that I didnt recommend any of them in this thread either. Haha, actually noticed that I've only recommended like 5 albums during this whole thread! Strangeeeee.

they're pretty good. i remember seeing them on those old epitaph punk-o-rama compilations like 10 years ago.

i figure that since i don't have 5 new artists for the album of the week thread, i would just throw this one out there. i came across this artist called Bersarin Quartett a few days ago, even though his album is from 2008. really good ambient/down-tempo.

also might as well throw Hurts in there as well (although Starz was probably the one who I saw talk about them first). their debut is in the itleaked thread, they are really fucking good. everyone should check them out. http://www.myspace.com/ithurts (http://www.myspace.com/ithurts)

Here's my two cents:  Avec is a good female-fronted indie/punk band from Baltimore.  To my knowledge, they have 2 full length albums, "Lines" and "When I Breathe I Fall Asleep," and a self-titled EP.  Blackmail is a rock band from Germany.  All their albums are good.
