Title: How do you currently feel about the Tones's upcoming album?
Post by: Deftones-argentina on Apr 11, 2009, 09:45 PM
The first deftones album wait for me was the S/t, I was an uninformed kid at that time, I'd check deftones world once in a month or two, but that's it. Then suddenly I went to a record store and saw that the record was actually there since a week oir two. I inmediately bought and went running to my house in order to hear it as quick as I could.
Then, saturday night wrist. Man, that wait was really intense. I think my heart pumped the second I downloaded beware, I was even having some crazy dreams about the new deftones album. Originally I intended to wait until the record release, but I just coulnd't help it and had to download the leak and hear it in its entirety.
Now, for this album, I really think that I won't be all that anxious, at all. I heard the snippets we all heard and some of them are amazing, some not so (Melanie). But I didn't get that feeling, you know? I don't blame the deftones at all, because they have been putting amazing music and they WILL be uptting amazing music, but nonetheless the hurry isn't there anymore. Option 2 for me

Your thoughts?

I'll be excited when we can hear a studio version of a new song, not before.

Actually I got into them through street carp and knife prty, but the "radio friendly" songs you mentioned are great tracks anyway. I don't see how i'd care about who you trust and why, I just asked about how everybody felt about the upcoming tones album, thank you anyway.

I mean, it's not like - 'fuck it I don't care', it's more like 'I know it's gonna be good, so I'm not gonna be a drama queen an squeel for six months in a row how much do I want it'.

Yes, I like the Deftones, they're a living classic, but nowadays I have other bands to listen and overhype to.

s/t was amazing and melanie sounds it will be better than any song on around the fur (in my head anyway ) around the fur song writing was kind of poor, if chino hadent sung on it, it wouldnt be that great.  snw sucked ass, made myself aware that deftones releases from that on isnt that secure

Even though I consider myself a trained listener of music, it took me a few years to really appreciate S/T for what it is. I guess that is also the advantage of having more records being out after that, so you can listen to the album with some context. Right now, I consider S/T a fantastic record, right under my holy duo White Pony and ATF.

SNW, it's not my favourite, but I am sure I'm going to like it more when the new record comes out. I just started listening to Deftones again this week and it got me really pumped for new material.

As for the quality of the new record, I'd be surprised if it would make everyone happy. I think it's fair to say that White Pony was a undisputed classic that's never going to be overcome by the band. There's only a few bands that really make such a good record once, expecting it to happen twice is ridiculous.

As for me, I've only been into deftones since 2007, ive never seen a album be realsed by them or anything like tht.  And im sorta scared tht we might have to wait longer then october, b,c if you remeber from a thread from a while ago it said new deftones winter 2008. in a abe interview he said january, in anoter interview they said spring 2009, and the most recent said october, so i think its gonna be changed again around july or so

I'm more like 'Anxiously waiting confirmation that it isn't another SNW'. In that regard, the wait is even worse for me.

Its funny how things have changed, no matter how bad other bands fucked up, dithered, dliuted or sold out, I always felt like I at least had the Deftones to lean on. SNW was like breaking my fucking hymen or something. That last pillar fell.

Its basically 'make or break' time for me.

well dude remember they did WP before S/T so after that I expected something similar (I'm not saying I expected a WP 2 or a WP copy) so it was new for some of us to listen a darker side of deftones. So for me it tooks time to get use to that "new" sound, but that's it, we all agree S/T is one of their best made albums.

I'm always excited for a new Deftones album.  In my opinion, they've never put out a bad album (though I was disappointed with S/T, I wouldn't say it was bad).  I'm really just aching for them to get really ambitious with their songwriting however.  If everything is as straightforward as Melanie, then I might be a little disappointed, but I'm sure the album will still be good.

I don't actually get how some people could say that about ST.  IMHO every album released by deftones has been awesome for the exception of a couple of tracks that arent all that; like pink cell phone other then that, great music.  am looking forward to the upcoming release.

Well after the progression of White Pony, it was a case of 'Holy shit, where are this band going?'. White Pony was the band hitting the stratosphere. and when I heard Deftones, I didn't dislike it, but I didn't know how to feel about it either. I knew on some level I dug the sound of it, without really articulating in my head that it was 'good', because to be honest I didn't KNOW it was good back then. I was a bit estranged from the album at first; White Pony was a hedonistic exploration, future proof and downright NEW, the band were perched to fly off into exciting new areas, and along comes Deftones, and its this fucking dark, fractured record. I kept listening to it, and the more I did, the more I looked into the lyrics and the sounds, it became apparent that Deftones was a derailing from the logical progression (following WP), and that this band had been hit with a sledgehammer sometime after Pony. On some level I sensed disappointment within me that their White Pony direction had ground to a halt, and that this band had maybe lucked out. Still there was something about the record that kept me listening. It was something I was determined to figure out. Was this record great and was I still rightfully listening for a reason, or was I right in thinking that this band's sudden change was a bad sign? Yet, for those who eventually understood, it wasn't disappointing at all. On some dirty, rotten, palm rubbing level, the band's personal issues were fortunate, because they'd laid those issues out on the record and produced arguably the best shit they'd laid down. I came to understand that it was actually the best direction they could've taken. Why? Well, think of it like this.

White Pony is standing in a pristine room, in front of a beautiful glass statuette of the Virgin Mary, viewing it through stoned eyes, and Deftones is the appearance of a crack across her face that you don't remember happening when you wake up the next morning. Its the acknowledgement of a fucking travesty. Its something you didn't see coming, yet you know for a fact you were witness to it at the time. Shit changes, you don't see the signs, and you're left to pick up the pieces, knowing full well that the broken pieces only got there with the added influence of you and your choices.

As exciting as White Pony was, it was kind of soulless - in some ways that's part of its hedonistic charm, but I had this new album, and it was a fucking soul record. Deftones could be played amongst Motown shit and fit right in. Ha ha. When it transpired what the band had gone through in that period, it all makes sense that Deftones was the fallout. There's nothing cerebral to Deftones, in comparison to WP, which is all very intellectual. Deftones was about heart, but it wasn't a record that was easy to get because that sense of soul came out of left field, given what had just gone before it (WP). So in that regard, it took a while to understand Deftones. When you do understand Deftones, its their best album.

I honestly believe that it was easy for fans back then to listen to Deftones and not get it without coming to understand the reasons for it. I also believe that whoever still doesn't rate Deftones, still doesn't appreciate the gravity of the record. I've said this before, but Deftones is their most painful, most heartfelt record. Its the one that the people who really fucking LOVE what this band have done, appreciate the most, because its the one time they really wore their hearts on their sleeves for the sake of the music. Its fucking wonderful that a band could go from the crazy experimental fronts of WP to such a stripped down approach of Deftones, and write better shit.

That's the difference between Deftones and SNW for me. SNW has little heart, and none of the intellectual stimulation of WP either. From the Ezrin shit I was hoping to get a good mix. With stuff like Buffalo, it seemed like the heart of Deftones was going to remain, but we were going to get some fresh soundscapes, and SNW would be the progessive train being put back on to the tracks after the interesting, fulfilling experience of Deftones. Not surprising really, Buffalo is quite frankly, more of a Deftones-era track gone semi-prog, which is exactly what I wanted next.

Shit didn't happen though. It'd better happen with the new one. This band are better when they write in the moment, and the wait for this new one is making me nervious.

It took me several months to like S/T and now I love it.

i really dont get this "it takes months of listenings" crap,.. when i first heard the entire s/t album my jaw dropped to the floor... and at the same time i got worried... i thought "no, this is so fucking good i cant believe it, now there gonna be BIG for REAL and be all over the place" ....but that didnt happen. it got good reviews but then i saw fan sites dissing it and i was like "huh..? its fucking better than white pony ffs!"

Shit changes, you don't see the signs, and you're left to pick up the pieces, knowing full well that the broken pieces only got there with the added influence of you and your choices.

wow really great read, your shit should be in magazines, reviews, ...stuff like that.maybe it is. took so long to read even my screen saver hit :)

i always thought of s/t as the next natural step from white pony... with similarities but better: wgtb=elite, lucky you=teenager and bloody cape with that heavy hard hitting bouncing style to it was the new korea to me. but your right, the record is more stripped down. i dont necessarily think one have to know what they been through as a band during the writing of the record to love it but i guess it helps.the record is more brutal thrashy dark evil and emotional... more raw and honest... listen to it is like beeing sucked into a black hole of misery. white pony was more  fancy art,oh la di da. (still good thou. at that time it was great)
i think they (chino) rejected buffalo because it was so depressing and in the same way st were and he was sick of putting dark stuff on records and wanted to do something new..but that something new was something really shitty. it was bad times for the band during snw too and they felt they wanted to do something more cheerful. but that just aint deftones man.

oh man,u just got fooled by the advertising of snw.

"The songs are kind of brainy. They're more Rush than Tool in a way," he continued. "On our last record, we got kind of lazy by writing as few riffs as possible. This one we're writing way more riffs"

thats chino bashing the old stuff (s/t) and promoting the new (snw).. rock stars ALWAYS do that in interviews before a release.
do u think chino consider snw songs brainy now when he is gonna promote eros?

To be honest, from the sounds of things, I'm sure SNW was where they were actually lazy. Of Deftones and SNW, Deftones actually sounds like a cohesive album. SNW is just a random mix of whatever they were coming out with, whereas all of the stuff on Deftones belongs together, because it was actually written as an album. I'd say that was more of an effort. It can't possibly be lazy, in comparison, when all the tracks fit together so well. Its just 'stripped down', musically.

I think that album engulfed the band more than even they realise. Perhaps that's the charm in listening to it. Maybe it means more to the listener than the band, like how you notice and appreciate things in the people around you that they are oblivious to themselves.

kimdracula - ok pop rock song, no more no less.dont reach the normal standard on a deftones album...more of a b-side song.
i dont like that chino sounds like a cow with that mmmoooooouuuu after 2 min

beware - live version was decent, had a sound in the chours that oozed anxiety but they got rid of it on ther album, bad mistake.maybe for that happy feel of the album. chinos voice sound forced and awful.

cherry waves - piece of shit song, the chours YooOoU sounds childish and annoying as hell, cant stand it

combat - best song on the album, why not more of these tunes?

hite - dont feel like deftones, chinos voice not that great.feels like they cover a song from an other artist

riviere - meh. breakdown good though

actually i am one of them
but it wasnt about team sleep...

i just wanted to vote ''fuck deftones''

- also each deftones album is different (not like another artist but different)
- snw has more soundcapes, different styles, echo voices (on the other albums chino's voice effect was like phone sound)
- cherry waves is a kick ass sound, you cant call it childish if pinky-blue dreams and love are in it...
- my guess,  you like only heavy guitar and phone effected voice and you hate echo, all sound effects..
- fuck you too, but i really like you..
- kimdracula is a pop rock song ?!. When did you get out from the cave ?...its one of the songs which has an own style that deftones ever made..
- i agree that chino's voice is completely weak on this album but songs, melodies, guitars, drums and style is good.
- everyone can play any songs of deftones but snw !...even they cant...
- i am not saying snw is the best album but its 2006, everything grown up but you want the music stay the same..
- what i feel about eros is they are gonna be back to old albums...like atf+wp thing..
- fuck you again, but i really think that you are cool nowadays..
- s-t album not a completed album...even i can do/add that songs better parts/ends
- i think snw hasnt pink cellphone people would feel better about it..cuz lucky you is a great song but people like jesus thinks that is childsh...(yeah wtf..you find what am i talkin about)
- i m on the same opinion about riviere, i mean its beautiful..but the end ?...after mein and pin cellshit the album s finished ?...

whatever....read it jesus..i love you

- also each deftones album is different (not like another artist but different) i never said anything else
- snw has more soundcapes, different styles, echo voices (on the other albums chino's voice effect was like phone sound) so what? it sucks anyway no matter how much soundscaping
- my guess,  you like only heavy guitar and phone effected voice and you hate echo, all sound effects.. " as long as its good it doesnt matter what effect.
- i agree that chino's voice is completely weak on this album but songs, melodies, guitars, drums and style is good." abes drum is good on snw
- everyone can play any songs of deftones but snw !...even they cant..." still, doesnt matter if its hard to play or not yngwe malmsteen is hard to play, aint good for that sake.
- s-t album not a completed album..." it is.
- i think snw hasnt pink cellphone people would feel better about it..cuz lucky you is a great song but people like jesus thinks that is childsh..
i rather listen to pink cellphone than teenager, i really do. i think lucky u is their best electronic song though.teenager isnt that good song by itself but it makes the white pony record fly when u listen from start to finish

- i m on the same opinion about riviere, i mean its beautiful..but the end ?...after mein and pin cellshit the album s finished ?...
riviere is best as closer if u choose from snw but it isnt good enough as a deftones closer if u know what i mean

and as for riviere as last track.. i demand more from a closer on a def album. when the final chord is struck on moana,u feel kind of exhausted and sweaty... it grabs u and shake u around.. like flying on a dragon through hell. i love that tune.riviere is more of a nice tune to have in the background
i think maybe you just had the best year of your life in 2003 or something & s/t takes you back, so it feels better than it really is to you. i dunno. there's no way snw is so horrible & s/t is so great, it's the same band, & the stuff isnt that different (& riviere > moana, by miles)

I'd say that if White Pony is the peak of a high at it's most euphoric, then S/T is the comedown from that high the next day. It's the after-effect. And I mean that as a compliment to S/T.

SNW is genius.

in what way?

It's just so difficult to get into and sounds like no other band out there. Usually comparisons immediately appear but with that album I don't get any.

The new album should be progressively amazing as always.

Absolutely not. The final chord on Moana leaves you with a sense of completion after a song that kept you on edge for 5 minutes. Riviere is very good, mind you, but it is too under-developed to have the same kind of effect as Moana.

Deftones is their most painful, most heartfelt record. Its the one that the people who really fucking LOVE what this band have done, appreciate the most, because its the one time they really wore their hearts on their  sleeves for the sake of the music. Its fucking wonderful that a band could go from the crazy experimental fronts of WP to such a stripped down approach of Deftones, and write better shit.

yes, the final chord makes you press play again to hear the ENTIRE album again, and once agin, end with AMAZING Moana.
In th meanwhile, with Riviere, you only say.. well, good song, let's hear now the songs that i like the most of this album... not the entire album...
but you know, each to his own opinion ;)

Gotta admit, I didn't like Mein. At all. I don't even know what the fuck Serj is doing on the song, what he does on the track could be done by any beginning singer.

he is on the track so they could release a singel with a more famous name and voice (serj) and sell more records cause of it because soad was really famous. thats how the record company was thinking. before the snw release chino talked about how he thought mein was going to end up as a b-side (meaning he concidered the track not so good) but record companies usually win

For all my praising of the Deftones album, Moana's the one thing I think that is wrong with it. It's a decent closer song (though I think its the weakest of the 5 they've offically released), but its a sudden concept song on an album bereft of any concept. This 'superflybitch on stage' comes out of nowhere and the sudden displacement of context gives the feeling that the song has been tacked on the end. I think a good 'general' song was needed to fit with the rest of the album. That's the great thing about most of the context of Deftones. There's nothing specific about it at all, and the vagueness of Moreno's writing had suddenly shown another dynamic. The album's about mood, and avoids specifics. If you go through all of the tracks one by one, and look at the lyrical content, all of the description is minimal, which gives a feeling of being swept up in the moment, rather than being reflective.

For this reason, I think that Lovers would've been a better closer for Deftones. It also would've been more of an uplifting moment than anything on SNW was, because it'd be like the light at the end of the tunnel, and the album would end on a high note of sorts. Lou Reed's Transformer album did a similar thing, where the whole album documents his heartbreak and halfway through the final song, Goodnight Ladies (misleading even with it's title), you realise that he's in love again and the cycle continues, and it wasn't the continuation of misery you thought it was probably going to be.

I agree that Moana may be a better musical fit after Anniversary's sound. but I think they would've been better off ending with a song that continued the same subdued use of imagery as all the other songs and that was more about feeling, like Lovers was. With Moana, I think it would've been better if she was just a stranger walking down the street or some shit like in the Bloody Cape video. You know, 'doo a diddy diddy dum diddy doo' and all that shit. I think it's the whole idea of her being on stage that I don't like, because you'd think the rest of the album would have been a prelude to that moment, given how important she immediately becomes .

I listen to that track and I'm like 'Who the fuck is this, and why am I supposed to care about her all of a sudden? You're singing about her like you have been the whole time, but you haven't'.

I've said it a million times, S/T was really lazy.  There were some really great ideas, but a lot of the songs sound either unfinished or like rehashes of other songs or reuse of ideas.  Moana fits the rehash/reused criteria perfectly.  I mean, how many times did the band think they could use a two chord strumming intro/verse?  Or how many times are they going to play the intro/verse riff as a substitute for a bridge?  I don't think the Deftones have really ever written a "bad" song, but they can be incredibly lazy and it showed on S/T.  Moana has a great vibe to it, but it's definitely their weakest closer.

New album on the way for 2015 :

Quote
Deftones have spent the better part of 2014 alternating between the road and taking time to let inspiration strike during a series of writing sessions. Luckily for fans who are craving new Deftones material, the latter has been consuming their time.

In a new post, the band revealed that they're back in the studio writing new music, but during one of their recent sessions, a special guest dropped by. Legendary Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward turned up and the band couldn't pass up the chance for a photo op. You can check out their posting on the matter below:

Post by Deftones.

It's not known if Ward was simply dropping by for a few niceties or if he contributed in any way to the music that Deftones are currently working on.

As stated, Deftones have been alternating between touring and the studio. They returned to the studio earlier this spring before setting aside a two-week writing period in late October. The group is working on the follow-up to 2012′s 'Koi No Yokan' album. It's expected that a new disc will turn up in 2015.

The band is already starting to map out the upcoming year, having already signed on to play the first-ever U.S. edition of the Rock in Rio Festival in Las Vegas. The event will play out over the weekends of May 8-9 and 15-16, with Deftones joining Metallica, Linkin Park, Rise Against, Sepultura, Coheed & Cambria and others. I hope they go more experimental. Last two albums sound pretty much the same they usually try to go left of what everyone is thinking.

I felt like Diamond Eyes had a great string of really heavy tracks followed by that Spacey sound you hear on SNW. KNY had it's moments but mostly it just reminded me of a less electronic, more rock sounding crosses album. They've stated that EROS was dark and depressing (which they also said about self titled) and that makes me excited for it's release. Their new album I'm sure will be good but I don't know if we can really expect much of anything considering how many genres/sound types they tend to cover.
