This thread is for the discussion of the first SL Music Draft ever.

1. I will begin sign-ups right at this moment.
2. Ths is how it works: Everyone chooses ten artists, in an order chosen at random, then once everyone has chosen said artists, voting begins, winner gets to move on to the next round, winner of the draft gets bragging rights.
3. Only musical artists are permitted to be drafted: Composers, solo artists, bands. Fictitious acts should be drafted at your own risk. Diverse lists are recommended, hardly anyone will vote for a list that consists of just one type of music.
4. Please copy and paste the round chart below when you post your picks. I am the only one running this, so let's make it easy on me. Thanks.

Haha, it's just a game...all in good fun.
if, like, 15 people wants to play, i'll make a random list of people's names going from 1 to 15. the first one on the list picks a band/artist. then it's the next persons turn to pick one. Once an artist/band has been picked you CANNOT pick that one.
When everyone has a list of 10 bands/artists the "battle" will begin. I'll team people up against each other. One list versus another. Then the rest of the board will VOTE for their favorite list. The person who gets the most votes will move on to round 2.
In the end we'll have a winner.
Like I said, just for fun...

I'm actually not following. So right now I could pick ten random artists I like, right? Then I will go up against another member here and everyone else will vote on who has better taste in music? Is that what it is? Or battle of the bands? My number one competes against someone else's number one?
first you take turns in picking artists/bands. when everyone have a list of 10 artists/bands, i will put random lists up against each other. the rest of the board will vote for their favorite list. the list that gets most votes will move on to round 2 and battle against a new list. in the end, two lists, compiled by two members, will be left. people will vote, again, for their favorite... and yay, we have a winner.
i just thought it'd be something new and fun for the board.

hmm that's hard to say. depens on how long it will take for people to make their picks.
Just wondering. People will have vacations for a couple of weeks with no Internet access during the summer, so it will come to a hault then. For me, I'm gone for 2 weeks starting the fifth of June and probably others will have the same thing at some point. If there's some draft picks to be made after I'm gone, like 3 or 4, I could just for example pm a list of 20 bands to you in the order of my preference and you could fill in the caps from that list with the bands who are highest on the list after other people's picks.
Other option would be that we could just keep it going until the end of May and then continue again in the beginning of lets say September if it's not done by the end of May. Or to pause the draft while people are off on their vacations and continue when everyone's in town. People could post their long absences on the thread so that people won't be left wondering why someone is not making their pick. Umm, I don't know, just some thoughts.
But you know, if you think it gets too complicated I'd be cool to drop out also but this sounds like a fun little competition.
we should be done before june. if not, yeah, just pm a bunch of still available bands to me. this shouldn't be a problem though.

The competition is gonna last a bit longer than thought in the beginning, maybe the drafting will last for about 30 days if we get 1 round done in 3 days as it seems now. 30 days is not too long but we could speed up the competition with some changes.
Here's some suggestions, just theoretical though, they could end up making the drafting even longer than what it is now hehe.
We could have 2 options starting from the second round to speed up the competition. It seems now that people come here to take a look either at the wrong time and not often enough to see if it's their turn already or it goes so that a guy from the US picks at 7pm and a next guy is European where the time would be already 1 am and he would be asleep:
1. Place the people from the US after each other and then place the people from Europe after them. That way the time difference problem would be taken care of and we would be able to make a total 1 round of picking each day regardless of what time people make their picks.
This could work but has a lot of questionmarks. This would shorten the time period of picking a full round most probably to 2 days. Another option would be:
2. We have 12 people in the competition, both European time region and also from the US time region. So there are 24 hours in a day. Let's give everyone a 2 hour time slot to make their pick. We could also give a 4 hour time slot but people could make their pick already starting with their slot if the other guy hasn't made his. For example if the slots are given as US Eastern time:
6pm - 10pm US guy
8pm - 12am: US guy
10pm - 2am: US guy
12am - 4am: European guy (this is for example my time 7am - 11am)
2am - 6am European guy (my time 9am - 1pm)
I'm sure someone would even love to make their pick at a certain time when he knows that he for example only gets out of work or goes to work each day at a certain time. This option would decrease the time period of picking a full round to 1 day.
I don't know, this second option could increase sending the pick via PM as people can't always make their slot.. On the other hand the first option has its downsides as well.
hmm, since the draft is going okay now, i think i'll stick to it. but yeah, people should just PM their picks to someone if they know they wont make it in time.

Yeah, the draft seems like it's gonna go for about 1 round per 2 days so it won't take too long. we'll be done in about 2.5 weeks which is a really short time actually. Oh, and I wanted to make the pick that Aenemic did, just figured I'd have time until maybe the 3rd or the 4th round to make it... damn...

I think that maybe the time limit should have been a 24 hour time period considering various time zones. If 8 of 12 hours were spent sleeping and the next four were not spent immediately coming here, how is that fair?
if we're going to reverse from top to bottom every round, i say the ones who missed their turn choose two on the way back. I'm sorry if that didn't make much sense.
hey defskull, i edited your post. the pick you made (deftones) should be placed in front on "Round 2" since you missed the first round. When you've made your Round 10 pick, you can make a pick for the first round.
About missed turns:
You are only allowed to miss a turn once. Second time you miss a turn you're out.
If you miss a turn, like defskull did in Round 1, you must wait to fill out that Round 1 spot until you've picked a band for Round 10.
It's all in the rules on the first page.
And okay, I'll change the time limit to 24 hours.

There's lots of bands out there man and with 12 people in the draft we only need to pick 120 of them. There's gonna be tons of very well known bands for the final rounds of picking as well.
And for me, I'll probably start picking some less known bands maybe starting from this or the next round so I'll just give people a chance to check them out if they want to by posting something by them in the Great Unknown Bands -thread.
In reference to my last post, well, if I think about it, maybe 3 people will check out the band that I post on the Great Unknown Bands thread. Therefore when it comes down to voting even thouhg the 3 people would like the band the rest of the people will be like "what is that band on that guy's list at number 3, I ain't voting for something that I don't know". Thus I shall revise my plan and go for a bit more well known bands still at least for a couple of rounds more. ;)
Damn I didn't think Circa Survive would get picked up. I figured I could get them whenever. Also, when it comes to voting I think that we should not be allowed to vote for ourselves, and to further this, when we vote should have to post who we voted for.
And I wouldn't worry about lesser known bands. Perhaps each pick could have a link to their myspace page?

Oh by the way, I'm actually not happy with picking Circa Survive after Dredg and The Mars Volta. I wanted to make a versatile list so that's what I will do. I will forget the "not picking unknown bands because people might not vote for them". So, if you people allow, I shall change my 3rd pick from Circa Survive to Wax Tailor.

When it's time to vote I'll make polls. I think it's invetable that people with vote for themself. If both persons in the poll votes for themself it wont matter anything anyways.

Yeah it'll be lame if no one else votes except for us and we all have one vote. Know what I'm saying? Forcing everyone to not vote for themselves gives a possibility of a clear-cut winner. And besides, it's kind of douche-y to vote for yourself.
Also, anemic, I had no idea you liked M83. Definitely another one I was considering. I guess I feel like the bands I like wont be taken but SOOO many of them already have been taken.

Damn Massive Attack took long enough. I swear this is my thought process for most rounds: "Hmm no one has picked ____ yet, looks like they're mine on next turn" and then before I can do it, someone else takes them!!!
Massive Attack was the latest casualty of this thought process. A band that should have been grabbed up rounds ago was just taken. I figured no one had taken them yet so no worries. How about a list of bands you were going to use but were taken from earlier that round.

You guys have probably noticed how the draft picks in your mind change with the day and the mood you're in. I totally changed my mind now on my 7th and my 8th pick. Especially now that there's such a few picks left it's hard to leave any good band or artist out.
Hey, here's an idea: after we are done with this draft, after picking all these 120 bands/artists and voted whose list is the best, can we make another draft but so that we can not pick any of these 120 bands or artists anymore. It would be very Interesting to see what bands get picked there! It wouldn't have to be all the same 12 people picking but the bands picked in this first draft would be out of bounds. We could just post all the bands in this draft to one list and people could use for example the search function in their Internet browser to see if a band is picked yet or not.
I would love that :P The problem would be that people wouldn't know half the bands other people post. It would require a lot of effort to check out such many new bands from everyone's lists. On the other hand it would widen everyone's music tastes, which is always a great thing. This first draft is the opposite as most of the bands are know by everyone at least on some level and there are only a few bands which are totally new to everyone. Although the one's that are new in this first draft are all worth checking out as they made it into someone's top 10 of all bands.
So maybe the Underground Draft wouldn't work... Haha, it's always nice to ponder things to see what they'd actually be like in reality 8) But hey, what do you guys think, would it be worth a try some day? And if not, what kind of competitions would be cool after this one? As this competition has proven to be a success on the board, we could continue with something else after it.
I would be up for it if someone else organized it, for sure.
A movie draft could also be very cool.

Well, those 2 picks I have bounced around a few times actually. I still might take 2 of the bands on the final rounds so I'm not gonna tell them just yet ;) Let's see if I feel like picking the band that I was supposed to pick, maybe I won't. After the final round I can post a list of like 10 bands I considered to pick but ended up not picking. It would be interesting to see other people's "leave outs" as well.

Done with my list and so is Crazylegs as well. I struggled a bit with my last pick. It's easy to pick bands when you know that you still have one pick left so that you can take just the right band but when it's your last pick you can't pick anymore after that. So lots of great bands gets left out and it hurts man. Damn, but I think I made the right choice with the last band ;)

Oh by the way, I'll be in my country's capital for the next 3 days or so, back on Sunday evening. Hence if there is something related to the draft, I won't be here. After that I will be back for 10 days, after which I will be gone on a holiday for 2 weeks. The voting probably starts sometime next week, so I would be delighted if my list would be going against opponent before I leave for my holiday or after it. That way I can showcace some of my picks if we're gonna do that.

the reason why i had to put 3 up against each other is because the number of participants is uneven. the matches are completely random.

looking from the perspective of voters and their likes it is impossible to win if you don't have a user friendly list. what I mean is - if, say, I was in a match with one other person, there's a 50/50 chance I win, and now there's only 33 % chance. = not equal rights for all the players. you should have made it in a more democratic way.
