Australian alternative/progressive band.

They have a new album out June 5th. Their debut album, Themata, kicked ass, so I'm looking forward to hearing the new stuff.

Here's the video for the first single.

And for those interested, their album Themata:

Post by: lostpilot on May 11, 2009, 06:44 PM
huh.
this is a bit disappointing.. I thought Themata would be somewhat more experimental/progressive.
but this proven to be quite dull.
there are some nice parts but by the track 4 my attention was totally lost.
the video is from new album, yeah? maybe I should check that out.

damn man, let it sink in a little. lots of little layers here and there. Roquefort and Themata especially are amazing songs.

oh, and if you find a link for the new album, please post it ;) it's called "Sound Awake".

i'm going to have to agree. i like the song in the video you posted so i look forward to the new cd. but themata was like 90% boring nu-metal. totally let down.

Hey, these guys are allright. really catchy. I just wonder how long it will stay interesting.

i hear "sol niger within" inspiration in Scarabs. That's in no way a bad thing.

Yeah, Scarabs immediately got me thinking of Meshuggah.

just listened through the whole album. not bad, but i feel they lack a bit of originality. They sound good, but very generic at the same time.

Anyone got opinions on the new album?

It's a grower, for sure. It has a pretty good flow. The bass lines are outstandingly heavy and I love the guitar effects.

Great vocals, great lyrics. All around very solid. Maybe a bit too long for its own good.

Post by: black coffee on Jun 10, 2009, 07:44 PM
It's good, maybe not incredibly good, but damn solid. I guess every once in a while I need a heavy, yet melodic album like this one.

Yeah I like the new album. I agree that some songs could be cut shorter but overall it is a nice follow up to Themata.

I've been listening to Sound Awake a lot lately.

This albums deserves more recognition. It's truly incredible from start to finish. Amazing musicianship. I listen to it and think "how do they come up with songs like this"? And the bass on this album is out of this world. I've never really heard this kind of bass sound on any album before. Truly unique.

Anyways, Karnivool is one of the most talented acts out there today and deserves to be huge.

Sound Awake is a masterpiece. i am so sad because they were near me on their last U.S tour and i couldn't see them :(.

hope they release a new album soon and tour the U.S again.

here is a new song they played on their last Australian tour

Karnivool NEW SONG The Refusal 25/6/2011 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_hRhIGoTKM#ws)

Has anyone heard their new song "Refusal" yet?

http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/media/s3762814.htm (http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/media/s3762814.htm)

To my surprise it has harsh, screamed vocals in it, which is pretty unusual for Karnivool and a positive surprise  to me. I felt the song was somewhat bland and raw in terms of songwriting and production, however. Definitely hope for something more refined on their full album.

Yeah I had the same opinion on it, it seems a lot less crafted than usual a bit like Dillinger Escape Plan quite erratic especially from Karnivool who usually put a lot of work into making cohesive songs. I have high hopes for the full album still, The refusal is not even on the album anyway, apparently it's a b-side they've have played live for a couple of years now but have only just recorded while they were doing the new stuff. Can't wait to hear the actual first single I'm sick of hearing Ian doing the real soft Birds of Tokyo stuff it's going to be good to get some new Karnivool epicness.

What a coincendence just finished downloading this really looking forward to hearing it,I enjoyed the three songs that were played on Triple J liked Eidolon the best, But im really hoping there are some epic heavy breakdowns in the rest of the songs haven't really heard that in the new stuff yet I want to hear them let loose especially Ian.

Have given it a few listens and it's very good 4/5 but I will say it left me feeling a bit hollow the songs do so much work building up and I kept waiting for a big expansive moment with simple but powerful vocals and instrumentals but it never camem all the songs have very good instumentals but it just seems to go from one complex phase to another without ever opening up like the songs on Sound Awake did so well, On their previous work they would have real complex busy parts aswell but then they would have those real groove based breaksdown they would swoop in and add balance, if this album had those expansive moments it would be 5/5 the songs sound very well developed as expected from Karnivool,  it's clear lots of effort has gone into honing them I just think it they needed to balance the complexity out more.

I've only listened to it once, but this is exactly how I felt.

Maybe this requires more listens, but as it stands now Asymmetry has nothing on Sound Awake.

The new album is really good. This band has been in that sort of "made great albums, but nothing mindblowing", and I still feel the same way. Both Sound Awake and Asymmetry are really good, but they are not one of my favorite bands or anything. Just a pretty great band, that I really like.
