As we all know, every artist has their part of work that will be disliked by a big majority of fans. And so have the Deftones. Although they are my favorite band to date, they also have some songs that make me wonder: " What the fuck were they thinking while they were composing this ? " or some others I don't hear any Deftones aspect in.
Adrenaline, White Pony and ATF are what I would call " flawless ". Every song from these albums brings something, imo. But s/t and SNW are not what I would call flawless.
S/T:
Moana
To me, it sounds like a mix between Minerva, Battle-Axe and Good Morning Beautiful at the same time. I easily skip that one on my player.
SNW.
Pink Cellphone. That song just bores me, it sounds like a tasteless piece of electro music. Although the sounds mix and the voices are not that annoying to hear, I just don't dig'em that much.
Mein: Nothing much to tell. It's repetitive and tasteless. And considering the brillant things Serj Tankian can do, I seriously wonder if his part is not some kind of joke.
Xerces: I know a lot of you guys will be like " WTF ?! Man this is a gorgeous melody and one Deftones classic ! " but, I don't know, I just don't get to like it. Yeah, the melody is lovely and Chino's voice is enjoyable. But... it sounds... not " dark " enough, I don't know if it's the good description... It sounds too trippy/poppish to be called Deftones stuff.
This is, of course, a personal opinion. Haters can suck my cock.

You know I didn't think "Mein" was all that great either until the other day the song got stuck in my head. I do believe that the Serj point is unnecessary, but aside from that I actually think it's a really great song.
I agree about Moana though. By far the worst album ender by Deftones. They always choose songs that feel like the only way you'd end them, except for that album. It's just...average. Painfully so. Not bad, but not good either.
I'm going to say Back To School as well. I think that if they hadn't made Pink Maggot I'd be okay with it, but Back To School just seems cheapen how mature of a song Pink Maggot is by essentially being a rap-metal remix.

there's not one song on any of the albums that I hate, or even dislike. there are a few I like a lot less than the rest though... so if I were to pick one off of each album it'd go like this:

WP - Korea
S/T - Needles & Pins and Lucky You (yeah, ok so that's two, but to be honest I barely even count Lucky You as a Deftones song)

Haha, right... But it seems surprising to me 'cause Korea's always been regarded as a Deftones classic. The bridge, especially. There's no White Pony without Korea, whereas Moana never hit that much of fans.
yeah, that's what I find so fascinating about both Korea and Moana. according to me, it should be the other way around :P
but seriously though, I really like the bridge part of Korea, but the rest of the song is just really boring in my opinion. I think Deftones are at their best when they do atmospheric and soft music. and by soft I mean it can still be heavy, but not as hard hitting and aggressive as their heavier stuff. to me, Korea is pretty much just an excuse for Chino to scream his ass off and I don't find it particularly interesting. there's barely any melody in that song.
Meh, a Deftones album without any heaviness and aggressive sound wouldn't sound like a Deftones album, to me... And of course, there's a need of atmospheric and soft stuff, too, that's right. But I see the whole picture. If they were only atmospheric and soft, Team Sleep would be useless. :D
hehe, of course. I never said I dislike their aggressive side. it's the whole picture I enjoy. but I tend to like the aggressive songs a little bit less.

S/T: This is where the band gets really lazy and REALLY repeats old ideas, uses certain sounds too much, and/or doesn't even finish writing the song (Hexagram, Deathblow, Battle-Axe, and Moana) Worst song: Battle-Axe
SNW: Production was really bad (Rapture and Beware) they got a little lazy when writing the bridge on some songs (Cherry Waves, Kim Dracula, and Riviere) and some songs just weren't very good ideas to begin with (Mein and Xerces). Worst song: Xerces
Really not too fond of "Teenager", don't like "Pink Maggit".
I always skip "Anniversary of...", I'm just not interested in that song although it's not bad.
"PInk Cellphone", I don't like at all and I just can't stand how that girl pronounce "power", makes my teeth grind...

Same for me with Headup, heard it too much. It's lost its impact even if it's a classic live song.

Adrenaline: Lifter. It is kind of... boring, when you have just ended listening to Nosebleed.
Around the Fur: It's my second favorite album, but the songs that I like the least are Rickets and Lhabia.. sometimes BQAD gets me bored.
White Pony: Teenager (I know, it's a sweet song, but.. once again, sometimes is boring. Nothing to say about the Idiot version. Simply awful) and sometimes I skip Elite or Street Carp
Deftones: The least for me is Good Morning Beautiful. This song never has grown too much on me.

I don't know how you could call yourself a true deftones fan without liking Hexagram. To me this song is the Deftones. I think this track is 20 years ahead of its time. And Root? are u kidding me? this has gotta be one of the best deftones songs. but everyone digs their own shit I guess. Thats the beauty of music. I love S/T and I love Hexagram with a passion. Best live song I've ever heard.

S/T is what links the ATF lovers, the WP lovers, the SNW lovers, etc.
I never met a guy who didn't like S/T whatsoever. Everything happens, I guess.
For me S/T has lost but still share some of the "sophistication" of White Pony and called back some of the in your face quality of ATF, just a perfect album.
S/T is the breakfast of champions.

For me, the Deftones can do no wrong. They are one of the VERY few heavy bands that make consistently solid albums. I adore their midtempo and slow songs. That's part of why their later albums hold up so well. A band should evolve, ya know?

Also mein is a bad decision for a single but i dont thinks it´s so bad as many thinks.

pink maggit is one of my favorites
from the adrenaline era to the white pony era deftones were flawless. but even though i really enjoyed the self titled album, there live show started to become laughable. i did enjoy the self titled album though. but with snw the live shows were still laughable and the music began to sound bad. the music on snw sounds forced or something, like the heavy parts they are trying to be heavy. and it just sounds goofy. snw isnt that bad. but overall its just not what im used to with deftones
i think thats what everyone thought with snw i enjoyed the first few songs and the last....pink maggot and rivier are two of the best album closers ever imo...s/t is my second favorite album after ATF...but again i cant wait for this new shit to drop...

SNW-pink cellphone for the same reasons so many other people disliked it. mainly the buttfucking monologue at the end. riviere i'm on the fence with. it's great but i find myself just skipping it often.
hopefully rocket skates is a sign of good things to come. chino is back on his game (some dispute he never fell off but you can't argue he's back to the energy of the old days) and abe is better than ever. it'll be interesting to hear a new bassist and i wish it wasn't the case but they seem to have an energy they were missing for a bit. anyway i'm rambing so yeah. theres my opinion.

Mein: Nothing much to tell. It's repetitive and tasteless. And considering the brillant things Serj Tankian can do, I seriously wonder if his part is not some kind of joke.
Xerces: I know a lot of you guys will be like " WTF ?! Man this is a gorgeous melody and one Deftones classic ! " but, I don't know, I just don't get to like it. Yeah, the melody is lovely and Chino's voice is enjoyable. But... it sounds... not " dark " enough, I don't know if it's the good description... It sounds too trippy/poppish to be called Deftones stuff.

Moana was a disaster. As a closer to the album, sure, it had it's structural merit in the way it blasted off into Chino's drug fueled flirtations with the lyrical presense of mythical goddesses. He seems to have a thing for calling up on some pretty other-worldly like chicks straight out of an opium dream.
Mein just came off kinda half assed. Serj was something to be missed.
Pink Cellphone would have worked better without Annie Hardie's buttfucking lesson. Honestly, if it werent for that then the album would had a much stronger stamp of prestige the liked of Fitter Calmer Happier by Radiohead. But in turn it just goes for some humor. If they wanted some jokes why not just break out into a Sarah Conner Hip Hop trip?
Xerces - The ending of this song is ruined. Check out the Bob Ezrin demo. It's instrumental. Chino and Rick from Team Sleep came up with it actually. But in the instrumental it's much more outerspacey and theres a Ken Andrews like guitar solo - simple, subdued and heroine timing. Really blasts you off and the studio remake with Chinos whaling kinda sullies is.

Moana has that. lovers doesnt really fit anywhere, but i think it fits better as an opener than a closer if you compare the two vibes of the song (if a had to choose).. lovers feels like it starts something more than it closes something, but lovers insted of needles is my vote!

Sound quality for adrenaline kinda sucks but thats part of its charm man, the utter rawness of it, the guitar doesn sound as beefy as the other albums fair enough, but its still a fucking classic with extra credit for being masterpiece of a debut
Deftones is my all time favourite band by a long way.It's one of the few bands where I can say that I love all of their albums and 99.9 percent of their songs.Come to think of it there isn't actually even one song which I hate.There is only 1 song that I don't really like and that would be ........... Beauty School. I know that a lot of people here are going to hate me and be in disbelief that I don't like this song but to me it's really the only Deftones song I can say this about. To me it sounds like 30 seconds to Mars, a band which I really dislike intensely. I don't know what it is, but it has that feel to it, especially the part where Chino sings 'it's a beautiful ride' - that part really reminds me of a 30STM song, the name of which I have no clue. I just think that this song is plodding and boring and sounds like it was made for radio. I love Diamond Eyes.I've loved it from the very beginning but have only really begun to appreciate the awesomeness of this album recently - it's really been a grower. I just wish that Beauty School had been left off the album - it slows the pace right down, at the wrong moment for me. Don't get me wrong - I'm not a fan who only loves their agressive stuff but the album seems to be building up so much momentum at such a frantic pace and I just feel that this slows the album down at the wrong moment.
As far as albums go I have nothing but complete adoration and admiration for all of them. Admittedly I have never given Adrenaline as much chance and as many listens as it deserves and it is and always has been my least favourite, but I still regard it as a great album. I have 2 favourite albums - I can't decide which is better and they are both so different - Around the Fur (the album that got me into the Tones) and the Self Titled album.Second place is also shared between Diamond Eyes and Saturday Night Wrist (which I think is terribly underrated).Next would be White Pony and then lastly Adrenaline.I don't get the people that say White Pony is by far their best and to a greater degree those who say it is their only good album - they must be crazy) and I don't get those who say Self Titled was a let down after this album -it's so dark and mysterious and absolutely great! - it has such great songs like Hexagram, Minerva, Battle Axe and my all time favourite Bloody Cape - how can you not love this album.Saturday Night Wrist is also vastly underrated and I don't get some of the hate towards it. One thing I love about the Deftones is that all of there albums are so different from one another, each one so unique, while still retaining the quintessentail Deftones sound.Each album sounds so fresh and it makes them the one band that consistently surprises and pushes boundaries without becoming ridiculous and resorting to gimmicks and little ridiculous electronic experiments like the hugely overrated Radiohead (I'm sure Radiohead fans will hate me for saying this), instead using the songs themselves and some very interesting song structures to do the boundary pushing.
For me Deftones is the greatest band there ever has and probably ever will be and it's just impossible to find anything negative to say about them.

I have 2 favourite albums - I can't decide which is better and they are both so different - Around the Fur (the album that got me into the Tones) and the Self Titled album.Second place is also shared between Diamond Eyes and Saturday Night Wrist (which I think is terribly underrated).Next would be White Pony and then lastly Adrenaline.I don't get the people that say White Pony is by far their best and to a greater degree those who say it is their only good album - they must be crazy) and I don't get those who say Self Titled was a let down after this album -it's so dark and mysterious and absolutely great! - it has such great songs like Hexagram, Minerva, Battle Axe and my all time favourite Bloody Cape - how can you not love this album.Saturday Night Wrist is also vastly underrated and I don't get some of the hate towards it. I love every Deftones songs, some more than others but I think the only songs I don't really care for would be Pink Cellphone and Black Moon (even though its more of a Cypress song).

tbh, I don't see what everyone else does in Elite. It's actually among my least favorites; the background riffs are somewhat enjoyable, and the lyrics are good but not exceptional, overall it's just very repetitive and thus unnecessarily long. then again that's just me. I've read so many songs on this thread that people hate or dislike and they happen to be favorites of mine. it's all just a differing taste, just glad as it is that we all like 'em to begin with! ;)
Back when I started this thread I didn't like Xerces, Moana and Lifter. Now, I love them.
But Mein is and will always be a fucking crappy song. Each time I listen to SNW, Mein takes me out of the trip, it's fucking annoying. Even Pink Cellphone doesn't have such a bad effect on me.

I understand this. $3 is a completely different monster. Fred's rapping is really cool and his pitch is waaaaaaaay lower. You can see the genuine Durst when listening to that album.

I sound like one of those fans that think everything about them is perfect, but there arent many songs frm them that I dont like, or that I dont go back to a few months later and have it grow on me. They go in different directions often, so I understand ppl having certain sounds or albums that they dont like or think are terrible, but I havent really come across that as of yet.
pink cellphone has no place in a deftones album // it's too far from their style
i've actually grown to like pink cellphone recently. i honestly think SNW would be a pretty perfect album if not for all the buttsecks / foreskin business. SNW is currently my second favorite 'tones record after S/T and it's pretty damn close. just ya know... the live performances were below par.
SNW is a great album , there are many many styles around it // rapture vs pink cellphone // cherry waves vs beware // it's totally one of the best deftones performance about everything they can do !

The first Deftones song I ever heard was Teething. I think it was on the Crow Soundtrack CD I bought and I really loved that song and started wondering who this band where. I forgot about them after that until I saw the 'My Own Summer' video late one night on MTV. I thought to myself, I've gotta check out their CD. I didn't, forgot about them and many many years later caught 'Mein' playing on MTV.
I said to myself: ''OK now this time I really do have to check this band out'' . I loved the song and the beat and it got stuck in my head so much so that I went out and bought my first 2 Deftones CD's (ATF and White Pony, SNW was out of stock at the time).
That's why I will always love Mein!!!!

I agree to some extent. Its definitely not my favorite Deftones album, but overall, its still good for what it is. The only reason i dont particularly favor it is because of the homies spinnin on their heads (Lol), which is a prime example of how non Deftones this album sounds. Thats my only problem really. Other than that its pretty good. Also they took "Buffalo" off of it. *Sigh*

And in the other threads, that was when people asked for my opinion or mentionned it, just like you just have, whereas Caín expressed his feelings about the S/T as soon as he could create a link between a certain topic and the said feelings.

I think that, compared to the other Deftones albums, it's not a good one. There's great music, a musical work that is more than decent, great influences, but to me, it's not a good DEFTONES record. Honestly, Deftones is not even one of my favorite bands, but they manage to bring some the special to almost every single track and are one of the rare few bands who truly do it, no matter if one likes the particular band or not.
Personally, I love SNW, it's a tremendous musical journey and I thought it was wonderful that Deftones finally mixed a lot of electronic elements into the mix; Pink Cellphone is actually one of my favorite Deftones songs period, I adore the lyrical theme, the female vocals, and just the experimental nature of it. Great track to listen to, like Team Sleep's Tomb Of Liegia (and no, it makes no scientific difference wether Pink Cellphone is a Deftones or Team Sleep track.) Other songs on the album like KimDracula, Hole In The Earth, Cherry Waves, Xerces, all of them hit a special place with me, and all of them flow in a tracklist so well. Not a single track on the album I dislike.
On other Deftones albums, there are always at least two songs I rarely listen to/don't like. On 'Deftones', my dislikes are When Girls, Lucky You, Anniversary, Lovers, and Moana. While I said above that I love the experimental nature of SNW, I feel like the experimentation on 'Deftones' really missed the excitement mark. On White Pony, I disliked Digital Bath, The Boy's Republic, Crenshaw Punch, and Feiticeria. With Around The Fur, I didn't like Dai The Flu and Mascara, though I felt the overall album was a bit slow. The only track off Adrenaline I didn't enjoy was Teething.
And lastly, from Diamond Eyes, my least favorite Deftones album, I disliked too many songs to really name, though I liked Diamond Eyes, 976, Beauty School, and Sextape.

Well written, sir. Yes, I called those who would make a thread about the worst Deftones songs "douchebags." You got me there. I'll admit to it. It was meant only to poke fun of the absurdity of deftones-hate on a deftones forum, but it is so easy to be mistaken or misunderstood on this rather impersonal medium. I'm simply annoyed by people that have to always concentrate on negativity (but of course by negatively addressing them I have, as you so astutely noticed, become a paradox).
It's not that I LOVE every Deftones song simply because it's the Deftones - but I can't honestly think of a time when I put em on and said "aw shit, not this track... what the hell where they thinking? this sucks." Of course nobody is perfect; I wouldn't argue that. But just so you know, there are fans out there like myself who enjoy every song. You can call us "pathetic groupies" if it makes you feel special. I typically listen to albums from start to finish (as I do with not only the Deftones, but many other innovative groups whom I follow). While you may call this "pathetic groupie," another would simply call it "music enthusiast." So sue me if I buy all the music that comes out from the many bands that I love.
As for the guy who doesn't like the self-titled album... wow. That's actually my favorite... well.. I guess it's tied with Adrenaline. How could someone who claims to be a Deftones fan not like that album?? It's a fucking gem.

outside of wgtb, bloody cape, and anniversary anything off self titled takes the cake for me. i remember being so excited for after getting into them in 2001 after white pony and finally seeing them in 2003. what combo of a shit album and live show. at least lovers and the covers were decent.
Not really a fan of Dai The Flu, perhaps its the only Deftones song I may skip. Can't think of anything else.

I actually consider Beauty School" as unnecessary. 976-Evil, This Place Is Death and Sextape of DE are simply far superior "softer" songs. The music video is good, though.
Beauty School is the best song on the cd. As much as I like 976, BS has more impact.

I get the same feeling. There's a build-up between Risk and 976-evil which is sort of a climax in the end, and then you get This Place Is Death which is a good song, but definitely not at the end. And come on, as a closing track it doesn't stand the comparison with Pink Maggit, MX, Rivière or even Moana. Yeah, I just said that.
And I also think that Diamond Eyes (the song) is probably the weakest opening song among the tones' discography. HITE is way more exciting to me than this one.
Lotion seems to be a fan favorite, but I feel like that song has never really clicked for me. I used to really think that Hexagram sucked, it's grown on me, but I still think it's a bit silly with the "Worship! Play!" part.
That second song from Adrenaline, Rickets, Beauty School and some others which I can't think of now...

yeah if you're more into the heavier stuff you can rate them above, I personally dislike the album version with the distorts and everything but it is a whole different story if it is live. It's quite vice versa with Elite, Live is often bugged onfurtunately but the feelings are there and chino has been giving it the best he can regularly.

I do not dislike teenager but when picking a bad song of White Pony it is like picking my favourite kid (in case I had kids). Street carp is not the best Deftones song but I still like it, Elite is epic for me. What a power, what a lyrics and how epic are the screams! So I pretty much like Teenager but I have to skip I skip that song.

yea, i mean i hatte saying that but it is not up to par. to me the whole SNW album was slashed to gether ya know like something they had to do, not something they wanted to do ya know-over all the albums allright but its just seemd cobbled from gunk and glued together in arush to get something out-and since the band was goin thru a rough time then it makes sense of course, sometimes in life we do things without putting all in. but like i sed its an ok album but they should led with beware the water and cherry waves as singles ;)
SNW sounds like a b sides collection.
The order of songs lacks flow and, yeah, it sounds cobbled together.
DE, on the other hand sounds like a band having a blast, being creative and playing together, and heaven forbid, enjoying it and being happy.
Yea a little on the positive side i think/feel, which al ot of fans dont like, since we are kinda used to the darker harsh deftones, but like its been said, we really wouldnt like WP or ATF part 2 and 3
When i try to get people hooked on tones i dont give them an album name i give em songs from record and some covers too, capturing thier range is not an easy thing and i think if you give someone just ATF they are guna be missing out on the inital Adrenaline of the awesomeness thats minerva idk thats just meh

You can always prefer songs to others...but if a band you love produce something awful that you think my god this is shit...would you not feel dissapointed? From the KNY songs iv'e heard It sounds like he's got more comfortable writing for the 8 string ,DE was good but lacked that bouncy rhythm.
I don't understand how people hate "Rats", I love that song and when you see it live at concert it's even more amazing. Cherry Waves is a song that I like the music, verses, and lyrics, but I think "youooo-ooo" is tedious in the refrain. I think that part should of been different.
Pink Cellphone and Moana got my vote.....Pink Cellphone without the vocals could've been a nice chill beat filter

Hell yes! I like the Bob Ezrin demo session version of PC. But on SNW it's like one of the worst songs on the Defones' worst album.

Yeah. I know that for the most part I like this song, but I'm gonna say that this is probably Stef's weakest riff of any Deftones song.

Seems too much like a Team Sleep song and not so much as a Deftones song to many people here, would be my guess...
Don't get me wrong, I like the song myself, would I keep it on my iPod if I didn't? No, no I would not.
I also like Lucky You, even though it's not your average Deftones song.
The reason why I don't really like Lucky You is because it's not something I'd commonly listen to. It's got that dark, strange sound that just doesn't fit the mood a lot of other songs do on that record.
The only songs I don't much care for, and haven't since my first exposure to them were: "Sextape" and "Black Moon". I know the latter is a b-side so I can't really hold that against them. The music video for Sextape made me feel a little better about the song, but it's the only song I don't have on my iPod by the Deftones. I feel like Chino used old lyrics from the Digital Bath & Cherry Waves sessions. Musically it's a little boring. I just don't like it.
Not that I think it was a good idea necessarily, but the ending to "Pink Cellphone" made me lol the first time, and still gets a laugh out of me now and then. They must have been so high.
I feel the same about Sextape, its all a bit boring and straightforward, I still like it though. I skip the ending to Pink Cellphone most of the time but I love the song. Really grew on me and made me a fan of Annie Hardy. I enjoy Teenager and Lucky You too, even if they are Team Sleep songs, they're nice diversions on the albums.
I don't dislike any songs but I can't say I've ever cared much for Rickets or Street Carp.
For me there are only 2 songs I can say I really don't like.
Moana, and Rats!Rats!Rats!

Half the songs on SNW I don't think Chino even likes them, he said in an interview he liked it but its not his favorite and a lot of things he doesn't like about it. Pink Cellphone was the first song he wrote for the record, he said he wished the whole record was like that. But I'm pretty sure at that time he was just rebelling and sick of being told how to sound and what to do.

I always enjoyed Lucky You, but I never understood why it made it on the album and "Lovers" didn't.. Lovers is such an awesome track.
I can't get into ST at all. I do love Hexagram, Needles and Pins, Battle-Axe and Bloody Cape. It ends there though, every other album I can listen to from start to finish.

Love Street Carp, fantastic song! I used to skip Mein all the time, then about a year ago I decided to play SNW all the way through and fell in love (I found Combat the same way too). I still skip Reviere everytime though!
Don't care much for Rapture or Prince.
Probably either Tempest, or this Place Is Death, but I don't really not like anything from Deftones, these songs would be my least favorites though:P

Rapture and Rats are 2 of my favorite 'tones songs. It took me a little while to get into Rats but that heavy low part when Chino is saying, "I won't say nothing, nothing, NOT A FUCKING THING!" is so freakin awesome. I just want to bash my head into a wall or something it sounds so amazing...and to me, Rapture is just bad ass all the way through. Really love the bass line in that one and playing along with the drums on my knees. I guess I can see why some people don't like those 2 but they are staples for me. I really can't say there is a Deftones song I don't like, there might be a couple I think are weak. Moana is pretty weak in my opinion but I don't really dislike it.

Back to School used to get on my nerves just because Pink Maggit is such a great song. It grew on me though. Couple of things (Good Morning Beautiful, Lucky You, Konami Code, Mein, This Place Is Death) I tend to skip, but I don't think there's anything wrong with.
Really, Pink Cellphone is the only one I dislike, and the blame for that one falls squarely on Annie Hardy's contributions. If for some reason I ever want to hear Pink Cellphone, I usually just listen to the Ezrin demo.

"Moana" shits on "This Place is Death" for me personally.
I don't think it was the best option to close the S/T, as its pretty underwhelming in terms of a finale compared to "MX" or "Pink Maggit", but as a standalone song, its pretty fucking awesome. The intro is totally weird and eerie and makes you feel like something is kind of like stalking you.
And "976-Evil" is ruined by Chino's vocal direction. But other than that, it feels pretty sincere and in line with their previous work in that regard.

Yeah, Anniversary should have been the closer. Moana throws me off everytime because it feels like the album is supposed to be over then it's like a half-assed bonus track gets tacked on.
I personally think Moana would have been better, and a better closer if the song would have ended atthe riff at 3min35, maybe repeat that riff a little longer, or add a new dynamic to the song. That last part is just useless, it's the same thing all over again, nothing new...
Both songs, Moana and This place is death kinda have the same structure.... but This place is death ends before it gets boring.

Not really my interpretation, i never really picked up much meaning from that song iv'e just seen alot of people on the internet saying it, i think i never got a meaning for it because of the lyrics repetitiveness i usually switch off lol
I never bothered to listen that closely to see if it was "play" or "pray," and I admit to a moment of my being illiterate with the booklet lol. I also never bothered trying to interpret the meaning to it cuz it was just so bad to me.
Keep in mind the booklet isn't always right. Chino told me himself...

Adr: Nothing really though I feel 'Root' the least. It's the reggae melody.
ATF: Nothing really though I feel 'Dai The Flu' the least. I think it's the spoken lyrics.
WP: Street Carp. Tend to skip it. The lyrics seem very underdeveloped.
S/T: Nothing. Moana is the weakest, and I'd rather it ended with AOAUE or had Lovers on in place of Moana but I grew to like it more in time.
***PRO TIP Lucky You haters don't 'get' the song or even the album, sorry. Consider how Mascara contextualises the rest of ATF. This is how you should have come to understand Lucky You. It's the vulnerable underbelly that explains EVERYTHING else. It's the track mark. Especially directly after Battle Axe.***
SNW: This is where I'm going to let fly...
Most of it, though I'd pick U,U,D,D,L,R,L,R,A,B,Select,Start. Almost every song was missing interesting qualities present in the Ezrin demos (of those that featured on both, of course) or was trying far too hard to be anything other than Deftones. After the courage to face the post-WP hangover that was Deftones, SNW is an escapist album where the band are audibly running away from their personal problems and even their identity. Songs like Mein, U,U,D,D,... , Xerces, Rats (yes, I generally like Rats but the exact style of the breakdown isn't exactly 'heavy Deftones', it's 'I love Meshuggah'), are all perfect examples of this. Frances Farmer is a bizarre muse chosen purely to discuss someone else's problems. I don't like The Cure influencing Deftones to the point where Chino comes up with out of character choral melodies, or Mogwai influencing Deftones to the point where they... just want to sound like Mogwai for a track, and this is why I pick U,U,D,D,... as it's the most extreme example. Pink Cellphone, which is just generic (and not to mention incredibly dumb for such an astute band), is better than this cowardly bullshit. That's the word for SNW, quite frankly. It was evident from the Ezrin demos and Buffalo that the band were heading in a direction similar to what we got with YSTB, except they ran away from it and safely coveted styles that weren't their own and filled the album full of non Deftones songs. Hell, Hole In The Earth is a blatant sell out pop song but at least it's a Deftones song and I'd rather the album had been full of those than 'interesting experiments in paying homage to other bands'.
DE: Prince. The melody is just ugly.

On the other hand I love Street Carp (it brings some light energy to WP) and Prince. I love the guitar riff and the lyrics on that on. Plus it's probably the only dark song on DE -I fing This Place Is Death to be more melancholic than dark- which, in the same way that Street Carp does for WP, brings some contrast to the record.

The hate for SNW and DE on this forum continues to baffle me...
Diamond Eyes was too compressed, too many choruses. The old Deftones was lost in translation to many fans. SNW was obviously a time when the band was at their weakest, and it shows. The album has very few solid songs, they are fun for a little while, but don't stick with you like most Deftones songs before then.
A lot of fans aren't impressed with their newer material. I think it's still enjoyable, but hardly their best. That's my opinion though.
My opinion :
All-time worst : Rats!Rats!Rats (even though SNW is my favorite album, I find this song horrid and boring)
Adrenaline : Minus Blindfold
ATF : Rickets
White Pony : None really, but if I'd have to choose one, I guess Korea
S/T : Moana (I had a hard time choosing the worst between this one and Rats)
SNW : Rats!Rats!Rats!
Diamond Eyes : Again, none really, but to choose one, Risk.

Rats is one of my favorite songs by them atm. Really digging the "Everything is fine" screaming. That song and the final three songs on SNW are my personal favorites from the album and represent it to me (feel free to disagree, this was the hardest album for me to get into by Deftones).

It does sound forced somehow. Unlike Cmnd/Ctrl on DE that to me sounds completely natural.

If I had to pick one, I'd go with Pink Cellphone.. It's something that should be on a B-Sides album or somethin. They could have replaced that song with something else.. Not saying it's bad, because at times I enjoy listening to it. Just sayin' SNW would be just as good without it.
I disagree even though i don't listen to the song much, Saturday Night Wrist wouldn't be Saturday Night Wrist without it.
Combat is awesome. Rats is a good song (written good) but chino just doesn't pull it off. Like I said though I wouldn't have it any different on the album. I can't imagine anything changed. It really reflects the times.
Come on guys, I think Rats! is a killer song, I really love it in its entirety, I think it's also the heaviest song on SNW.
Btw, If I had to say which Deftones song pleases me the least I would say Street Carp.

So ill be honest,I fell in love with this song today,probably played it round 20 times.it fits the album like a

Fist was moody and mellow. Damone had the energy. Pink Maggit had that unhappy sound. Moana sounded glorious. Riviere was nice and also mellow. This Place Is Death mixed sad with epic, thus resulting in a great closer.

surely you must be aware half those songs you listed are covers? Night Boat is a Duran Duran song, Ghosts is a Japan song and If Only tonight we could sleep is by the Cure and has always had the sitar sounding keys

Anyway, the only songs I genuinely think are bad are Mein, Pink Cellphone and Lucky You. I always skip them. There are a few I don't like or almost always skip, like 7 Words, Headup and Dai the Flu, but that's down to my own personal preference rather than the band having made a tragic failure of a song.

I agree with you on Pink Cellphone and Lucky You. 7 Words does get a bit old after a while too. I've realized that I rarely listen to Adrenaline anymore.
Before I give you my list I'm going to go ahead and say that I don't particularly "hate" or even dislike these songs in most cases, and I understand their place in the context of their respective albums... but every album has, in my opinion, some songs that just fall short. In the end, of course, they're still deftones songs and are better than some other bands' best songs.
Adrenaline - Bored, to me, is just... well.... boring.
ATF - Mascara, not terrible just not as good as the rest
WP - Teenager, this one I actually do dislike
ST - Moana I don't care much for, but Anniversary I very much dislike
SNW - Pink Cellphone, as someone said earlier, would have been much better without the ridiculous ending. I don't even mind Mein.
DE - Youve seen the butcher is a snoozefest, but I see lots of people who say it's their favorite... can't for the life of me figure out why. 976-evil and this place is death are only okay to me.
KNY - Romantic Dreams is my least favorite on this one, and I actually LOVE WHTY, really great closer in my opinion.

^I wasn't too much into Mascara or YSTB at first but I love them now. Just really slow, dark, sexual songs.

Love the vocal melody on the chorus. Plus the riffs sound sexy as hell. Though I admit the song could have used a little more variation structure-wise. Still, one of my favourites.

Everything else is more or less essential to me. Yes, even Pink Cellphone to a lesser degree. Dig the long, drawn out guitar licks throughout the track. It's good up until the obnoxious dirty talk part.
Pink Cellphone is actually the only Deftones song I delete of all my devices, there's other songs I skip most occasions but listen to sometimes but I always skipped Pink Cellphone so I just got rid of it, plus I fucking hated the ending it stopped me from being able to just play through my deftones songs or listen to SNW play in it's entirety, every now and then I would have my ipod playing in the background while hanging out with other people then it would start talking about anal and british teeth lol and it would be pretty embarrassing.
I don't mind Pink Cellphone sometimes but yeah, the ending is real dumb and hard to listen through. Glad they've stopped shoving electronic TS songs on the albums.
maybe they should do it again since the last two albums weren't good
Diamond Eyes was a particularly strong record. Koi No Yokan not too bad at all either. I'd rather continue hearing more full-band songs. The new Team Sleep album finally comes out later this year, anyway.

Mine still has to be Pink Cellphone. If I can't choose that then I'd probably go Cherry Waves (oh no). I just can't get into the lyrics and vocals! I usually love everything Chino does too. The bass line is the only redeeming factor in that song for me and its a little buried.
SNW is also my least favorite album by them (its still good overall). The demos had so much more atmosphere and attitude than the final product instrumentally. Oh well.

but when adrenaline came out, there was NOTHING else like it, people tried to lump deftones in with the likes of korn and limp bizkit, but true fans knew that was bullshit...
adrenaline is, and will always be my favorite deftones album, its so raw both audibly & emotionally, and its where it ALL began...
i implore those of you who dont like the first album to sit down and listen (volume cranked WAY up) song by song a few times, and if still you dont dig it, then fine...

I don't think age is much of a factor. It just depends on what you like. Deftones have such a varied sound that people's albums depend on their tastes. For example, I'm not much a fan of ATF. I mean, I love it, but it has the most songs that I don't particularly like. Whereas White Pony, that's an incredible album, that's my favourite. I love Adrenaline, it's very raw and rough around the edges, and it is very unique, that's easy to hear. But some people don't like that rawness. Plus it's their first album, they've changed and evolved and improved so much since then that it's easy to let Adrenaline go under the radar, despite it being a great album.

yeah, i mean youre absolutely right, regardless of age people have their preferences...but at the same time i just worry that *some* fans might not give the earlier/heavier stuff enough of a chance only because a lot of the younger fans ive talked to in person seem to prefer white pony/more recent albums..
and dont get me wrong, i love EVERY deftones album, but white pony was my least favorite for a long time, ive been enjoying it more recently for some reason...maybe being 33 years old helps! ;D

I could honestly never really get into Mein or Moana. Musically Moana isn't too bad but compared to their other stuff it just feels like it lacks something. And I love Serj but his short part kinda throws it off for me.
Also Pink Cellphone, depending on my mood I can tolerate it but I always skip the end especially if I'm with someone haha.
For awhile I didn't like Lucky You, Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event, This Place is Death, or Rapture. Now I don't mind Lucky You/Rapture, and Anniversary/TPID is up there with my favorites from them. Every time I listen to Anniversary it's like it gets better. It's a nice vibe to cruise to at night time.

Yeah I've heard every Deftones song about 100,000 times, so I don't think I need to listen to it more to grasp the beauty of it or anything. I'm not saying it's a bad record, I love minus blindfold, root, and a few others, but I just prefer their later work. It's not about age, I'm 28, it's about what I prefer to hear sonically. When I was younger, though, all I listened to was heavier music, now I've kind of calmed down my style as I've aged a bit. So in that sense my music taste does have to do with age, but even when I was younger I preferred ATF to Adrenaline.

Adrenaline is certainly good but I personally don't come to Deftones for heaviness, if I want that I'll listen to some doom or black metal. I come to Deftones for the excellent songwriting and atmosphere.

I think I'm the only person in the world who never liked Tool. They suck balls.
All I can say is that after having listened to the instrumental versions of many songs from WP to KNY some songs have grown a lot on me.
Also, from Adrenaline Minus Blindfold has grown a lot since it was my least favorite from that album. Same happened with Birthmark.
For ATF same happened with Rickets, and Korea & Elite in WP.
From S/T I remember that I didn't like a lot of songs like Hexagram, WGTB and AOAUE, but now they are top favorites; Good Morning Beatiful is the weakest song from that album imo.
SNW: HITE is still my least favorite along with Combat and even Rivière but have grown more since I've listened the instrumentals. As for PCP, it's meh but i'd rather prefer the Ezrin demo or the short version w/out dialog.
DE: weakest song for me is 976-Evil but i love the instrumental version.
KNY: Swerve City, Romantic Dreams and WHTY are the least favorites.
