Title: The Mars Volta/At the Drive-In/Omar Rodriguez/etcetcetc
Post by: lostpilot on Feb 04, 2010, 08:52 PM
sup
I guess this thread was also swallowed by the black hole (caused by your onanism) we encountered few months ago.
So please, when you masturbate, think about all the black holes. Please. Think. Put the dick away!

Anyway;
I have been listening to Octahedron a lot lately. If at release I thought this album was quite meh, now it seems a complete masterpiece to me. I love it how this album required some time to grow on me.

p.s.: "In an article posted online, it was reported that the band would introduce new material during a live show on Friday, January 15, 2010.'
so maybe maybe we will get a new album soon.

I thought the new album was fantastic. Very spacey lush sounds.

Another new album? Wow.

Now in my perception the ratings of TMV albums are:

Amputechture - 7/10
Bedlam in the Goliath - 7/10
De-Loused in the Comatorium - 9,5/10
Frances the Mute - 10/10
Tremulant EP - 8/10
Octahedron - 8/10

I'm not sure how I got to this point that Tremulant EP seems better than Amputechture and Bedlam (which I used to like a lot, but now cannot find time to dig in again)

De-Loused in the Comatorium - 10/10
The Bedlam in Goliath - 9.5/10
Frances the Mute - 8/10
Amputechture - 7.5/10
Octahedron - 6/10

The Bedlam in Goliath is such an underrated album.

I decided not to ever compare them. I mean, to me it's all different sound, genre and music; so I would not really say I prefer one band to the other.

yeah i get what your saying, and i do agree with that. what i meant was i like the atdi sound better than the direction they went after they broke up. i mean to me it just seemed like they were having more fun. their live performance will always be badass though no matter what kind of music they're doing.

well, in my eyes:
ATDI = pure emotion, live performances, jumping, screaming, etc
TMV = arrhythmia, math, chaos, psychedelia

that i can also agree with :) and since they represent different things (not only in your eyes, but theirs as well) the two shouldn't really be compared closely

that's really about it.

They have been releasing the follow to Octahedron for the past 3 years. Supposedly they already recorded a whole album, scrapped it, recorded another one, scrapped it and now they are working on another one. I think they might be on a small break because I haven't heard anything from them in a while.

De-loused is obviously one of the best albums of all time.. and then it just kinda took a slow curve downward from there.  Though all their shit is pretty beast.

For me, the first reactions are rather mixed. It'll need many more listens before I can say how I exactly feel about it.

I'm much more excited about the At the Drive-In reunion and their first live shows coming now in April.

The new album is sexy, I wasnt expecting to like it because I pretty much hated Octahedron and Amputechture, but it's one of the very few albums where I like every song on it. My favorite album frm them has always been The Bedlam In Goliath, and that's a very chaotic-sounding album, and this one rivals it in my opinion. I'm always amazed by their ability to explore new directions while still retaining their sound.

de loused was one of those albums that made me happy that atdi broke up. even frances the mute was pretty damn good. but everything after that was just playing awful in my opinion, all though i didnt hear the newest album, they stuff they released after frances the mute was so bad that im not even going to check out the new stuff.

But well Theis, Bedlam is a masterpiece in only by the "rules" that the album is written in. Comparing the overall quality/atmosphere/writing Bedlam is reallllllllllly far back from De-Loused and Frances.

I liked TMV much more when they were not covering the upper part of the spectrum with the guitars/voices. And they seem to be doing that more and more. That sharp hi-fi sound is just not what got me into them :-)

noctourniquet is so far my favourite mars volta album - best one if you count the number of awesome songs. maybe the strongest songs on frances the mute and bedlam beats the best ones here but those albums also have a lot of songs i skip, espcially on bedlam. so many good songs on this one... whip hand, in absentia & trinkets pale of moon are personal favourites but aegis, dyslexicon, lapochka, imago are all great too

haha what a slap in omar's face. doesn't matter if the songs he writes are good or not, doesn't matter how much thought he puts in in details - in the end - it's all about which drummer he uses  ;D

i'm lovin the shit out of the new mars volta album... definately more accessible and straight forward than their earlier work at the beginning of their carrerbut that's fine with me. frances the mute will probably be their masterpiece, noctourniquet's can't be called epic and "fantasic" as it, but i don't have a demand that they have to play complicated fast stuff like de loused or frances with lots of different structures... i just think if it's good it's good, and if you look at the latest album as a weird pop album it's sweet as fuck. vedamalady and dyslexicon will probably be my favourites when the dust has settled but soo many other good ones. the only track i skip is the making jewel and empty vessles.. the verse in empty vessles i pretty nice but when the chorus kicks in i can't listen any more :p overall really addictive album

Thank u 2 all VOLTA fans u deserved more especially after the way u rooted for us on this album. I tried my hardest to keep it going But Bosnian Rainbows was what we all got instead. I can't sit here and pretend any more. I no longer am a member of Mars Volta. I honestly thank all of you for buying our records and coming to our shows. You guys were a blast to play in front of We could never had done it with out you. My dream was to get us to the point were Jon Theodore and Ikey Owens came back but sadly it's over Thank u a million times over for ever giving a fuck about our band For the record I tried my hardest to get a full scale North American tour going for Noctourniquet but Omar did not want to. I guess a break from mars volta means starting another band and ignoring all the support the fans gave us. I tried my hardest guys All I can do is move forward with my music and just be happy that mars volta ever happened at all. God Damn we had a blast. Thank u again I just feel really guilty for not even really saying the truth because a hiatus is just an insult to the fans To all our fans all over the world thank you for giving a fuck. You all ruled! I don't think ill ever hear a fist full of dollars the same My record will see the light of day soon and I'm excited because it sounds nothing like my previous endeavors. And no I'm not joking about any of this, I owe it 2 u guys to all fans to be serious about this Thank u to all past members who helped Volta along as well. we blasted through like a comet and left our mark! If u ever see me in person and want to know why I'll tell u my story Please just be happy that it happened at all remember all the opposition we were met with for just starting a new band back in 2001.

The first two songs are pretty forgettable, it gets better as you keep going.

Bedlam In Goliath was always my favorite album frm them, then Deloused, then Noctourniquet. Also, I read Cedric said his solo music wasnt gonna be rock music, it was gonna be...I dont remember what he said, but different anyways. So I guess that's kwl to see what music he makes on his own, but I dislike change, I think I'm gonna really miss TMV no matter what his new music is like.

Have any of you listened to Bosnian Rainbows? I was a huge Volta fan, and really enjoyed Noctourniquet, but I like Bosnian Rainbows better than Noctourniquet. It's, like, what the soundtrack to every John Hughes movie *should* have been.

I don't like Bosnian Rainbows. I assumed I would like it, but I don't know, I just can't get into it.

Not gonna lie, I'm disappointed it's not TMV, I hope they get back to that eventually, but I guess they won't. Glad to see this news though, I'm not really a fan of Antemasque at all.
