Title: The Various Projects of Mike Patton
Post by: theis on Mar 30, 2010, 09:57 PM
(http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/256462/Mike+Patton.jpg)

The old Mike Patton thread got lost when the board went haywire, so here's a new one about my all time favorite musician.

Discuss everything regarding Mike Patton in here.

New interview with Patton about his upcoming Mondo Cane album: http://www.artistdirect.com/entertainment-news/article/interview-mike-patton-on-i-mondo-cane-i-i-was-living-a-completely-different-experience-and-that-was-italy/6663302 (http://www.artistdirect.com/entertainment-news/article/interview-mike-patton-on-i-mondo-cane-i-i-was-living-a-completely-different-experience-and-that-was-italy/6663302)

Can't fucking wait for it! And a European tour? Hell yeah!

Absolutely hilarious interview with Mike during the recording of Angel Dust. Patton is such a prankster and the interviewer doesn't seem to know that he's fucking with her 80% of the time.

Part 1 our of 8:

Mike Patton Angel Dust Sessions Interview (Part 1) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TbM04nxetI#)

Rest is on youtube.

I love the fact that he is eating a sandwich during the interview. Oh, Mike Patton!

I have heard a little bit of every project he's done, but I really don't know where to jump in with his music. The man is a crazy vocalist, and probably one of the best vocalists ever.

those clips are classic and everyone who's remotely into FNM need to see them. I'm so glad they captured part of the Angel Dust recording sessons. I've had a small excerpt of this documentary on vhs for years and I was really happy to find the whole thing on YouTube.

I'd say start with Faith No More. first of all, they're still his best work in my opinion, plus they're probably the easiest to get into. move on to Mr Bungle and Tomahawk after that.

i enjoyed the webcast last night but they can never get the fucking sound right. it was nice to have coheed and faith no more back to back. i was pretty loaded so the bad sound didn't matter too much to me. this is really the only webcast rip for these guys i can find and it has the shitty boarder. better than nothing even if the mix is shit.

So while on umphrey's tour, I was driving around with my friends little sister.  I told her we were gonna listen to all mike patton related music.  She didn't know who he was or who faith no more was so I played epic.  She knew that so then I put on mondo cane.  Personally, I love this album.  She thought it was amazing.  I lolled.  Then came tomahawk.  She thought it was alright.  I asked her if the beat could win a grammy.  She didn't think so but Mr Patton set her straight.  We get to the show about 1.5 hours away and get pretty drunk. Driving back I told her to climb in the back and get the fantomas cd.  I threw that sucker it and cranked it to 11.  To my surprise she thought it was awesome.  Go figure.  Moral of the story: don't drink and drive.

QuoteFANTÔMAS DVD AND LIVE ALBUM, THE DIRECTOR'S CUT LIVE: A NEW YEAR'S REVOLUTION,
SET FOR SEPT. 6 RELEASE

SAN FRANCISCO, JULY 21 – Fantômas, the eclectic supergroup featuring Mike Patton (Faith No More, Tomahawk, Peeping Tom), Buzz Osborne (Melvins), Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, MadLove) and Melvins' drummer Dale Crover filling in for Dave Lombardo (Slayer), release The Director's Cut Live: A New Year's Revolution on DVD and as a standalone audio download on Sept. 6 via Ipecac Recordings.

Filmed at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall, the DVD features audio commentary by comedian Neil Hamburger.

Fantômas released the studio version of The Director's Cut in July of 2001.  The album tackles a collection of beloved and eerie film compositions including Nino Rota's "The Godfather," Bernard Herrmann's "Cape Fear" and Jerry Goldsmith's "The Omen (Ave Satani)."  Upon its release, Pitchfork said the release was "as cinematic as its source material" and NME called it "gleeful butchering."

Two songs featured on The Director's Cut Live: A New Year's Revolution were not in the original release of The Director's Cut: Al Green's "Simply Beautiful" and Marc Bolan & T. Rex's "Chariot Choogle."

The Director's Cut Live: A New Year's Revolution track listing:

1. The Godfather
2. Night of the Hunter
3. Cape Fear
4. Experiment in Terror

mxdwn.com - You are a turntablist that has seen great changes in the electronic music scene throughout the course of your career. What do you see for the future of the genre?

I think it's just about trying to play with more heart. There's a lot to the technical side of scratching, but at some point it has to be about expressing rather than just performing on autopilot. As an artist, you tend to practice your techniques over and over again as opposed to trying to channel how you are actually feeling. That connectivity—for lack of a better word, the soul—has to come in after you've done the initial technical aspects. The future, for me, is about trying to get these melodies in my head, these actual feelings, and to express that through the turntables.

mxdwn.com - Where did you get the idea to use turntables as a means for creating instrument-like music?

Classical piano was my first instrument when I was four, and it shaped the way I approached the genre. That had a lot to do with it.

mxdwn.com - That makes sense with your classical background.

Yeah. A lot also came from playing in band contexts as opposed to being the single person controlling everything coming out of the speakers. The difference playing in a band is being in charge of your 15 percent and really making it count. Like, the drums are taken care of, the vocals are taken care of, so where do I fit in with the other instruments and make the overall sound better?

mxdwn.com - Speaking of bands, you've performed with so many incredible artists over the years. Which tour really sticks out in your mind?

I just remember a few times where I really had to stop and pinch myself, like, "Is this really happening?" Performing at Madison Square Garden with Radiohead was one. They asked me if I could play turntables on a couple of songs. I was like, are you kidding? It was an out of body experience, really beyond words. When they actually walked out onstage for the first time, it was like this wave of energy was thrown toward the stage from the audience. It was really indescribable.

mxdwn.com - I can't even imagine.

Yeah, that was crazy. On the flip side, another time when I had to stop and pinch myself was when I played with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band in New Orleans. I'm a big fan of New Orleans jazz. The band members were all 70-plus years old, but they invited me to come and perform with them. At that point I was equally nervous, but for different reasons.

mxdwn.com - Taking it back to your roots a little bit?

Definitely. That type of music is completely from the heart, completely in the moment. For me, it was about being able to keep up with these incredible musicians.

mxdwn.com - Lets talk about your history as a graphic artist. How did you come up with the idea of incorporating your music with your art?

I've always drawn since I was a little kid. But I'm a big fan of cinema, and old Charlie Chaplin films especially. I know that kind of work is sort of obsolete now... people expect more from their cinematic experience. But for me, it was burned into my brain. Silent motion pictures used music to help augment the drama or the comedy. For example, with my recent project, I started drawing the story about a robot who tries to write love songs but can't sing. When I was drawing I started hearing themes, physical themes that I thought would resonate. I think that had a lot to do with it. A lot of people draw with music. The two worlds are really quite connected.

mxdwn.com - Speaking of which, can you tell me about the inspiration behind your Space Cadets Headphones tour?

That goes back to my DJ roots. The rule was always, can you do something people haven't seen or heard before? If it was a DJ battle situation, that would have been the case. But for me, it's not really about battling anymore, it's about seeing what else there is, where else we can take this. I've played thousands of loud venues, clubs, and sweaty music festivals, and at some point I was like, there has to be more than this. Since I knew the music for my book is quite somber and delicate, I thought that the best way would be to experience it through headphones. It's more comfortable, really.

mxdwn.com - Rather than having the audience all crowded and sweaty.

Exactly. This is a story about family, and the music was written around the time when my daughter was born. What I played was almost a lullaby. Just to have that cozy feeling in the actual show was what I was going for. So we came up with the idea of inflatable space pods. Originally it was bean bags, but that would have taken huge trucks to move them, etc. This way is great because everyone has their own personal, in-their-head experience, but there are also people around. There's this connectivity there. I love listening to music on headphones. Some music is perfect for it. I tried to keep that context of the book and the theme of isolation and connectivity in the production. The space cadet character is alone, just floating in space for much of the story. The flashbacks are the only time they're together. I wanted to get that sentiment in the show.

mxdwn.com - The story is really very emotional.

Yeah. We did one show and two people came up to me and said they cried. I mean, I'm still a DJ at my core—gotta keep the party going, that sort of thing. When people started crying... I don't know if that's the reaction I was going for, but it was kind of cool anyway.

mxdwn.com - Well, people can relate on a lot of different levels.

Right. For instance, on one page the main character is on a busy street surrounded by people on cell phones. It was based on an experience I actually had, on Oxford Street in London trying to figure out the time. Everyone was on the phone, frantic, and I couldn't ask anyone. I love that city, but at that point it took me thirty minutes just to figure out the time! It was actually humorous, but I did feel pretty alone. Everyone feels that at some point.

mxdwn.com - Any new tour dates scheduled?

Right now we're speaking with presenters at different venues all over the world. It's looking like we'll be doing fall in the UK and Europe. It's a big production and we need to install for about a week, which makes it different from regular touring. It's exciting. The show is much more of a family event. People brought their toddlers. The show involves what's almost a museum of analog recording equipment, magnetic disc recorders, tape recorders, etc.—music-making equipment. The kids have a good time making their voices sound like robots. It's one way to get people to familiarize themselves with the equipment used on the soundtrack, but beyond that, there's also this magic there that the kids pick up from the technology. Like, how is all this sound recorded on this strange equipment? It's interesting for kids to see.

mxdwn.com - We've heard rumors of a new Lovage album in the works. Is there any truth to that?

There is. The beats are done and my turntables are done, but that's about it at this point. Mike [Patton] is still writing, hasn't recorded anything yet. I couldn't put an exact date on it. Sometimes it goes quickly, but if he's busy sometimes it doesn't. But soon, hopefully. I always thought it would be cool to drop it on Valentines Day.

mxdwn.com - Then you better get moving on it!

(Laughs) Yeah, we only have a few months. I should call him now, actually!

mxdwn.com - What about The Slew? New album in the works?

Yes also, we're recording it. Mike is recording vocals. Right now we're setting up the skeletons for the tracks. We're going through it all and finding bits that we dig and cutting it to vinyl, reassembling so it has turntable flavor but with that heavy rock thing going on as well. It's slated for next year.

mxdwn.com - I saw on Twitter that you're working on a track with Q-Bert. When can we expect to hear it?

That's actually for a tsunami relief track. I was on tour in Poland a couple months ago with Q, and we talked about it. The project is being put together by a DJ in Japan, DJ Sonu from Sendai. The project is pretty close to his heart. We'll be delivering the track this week.

mxdwn.com - We'll look out for that. Thank you so much for talking to us. Can we expect to see your headphones tour in the States anytime soon?

Probably next year.

mxdwn.com - Can't wait! Keep us updated.

Is this actually going to be a 'Tomahawk' album or some weird bullshit Indian music or whatever the last one was?

And don't pretend you liked it because 'Mike Patton' was attached to it.  It was utter pointless garbage.

Tomahawk is mainly Duane Denison's project. the indian folk songs was his idea. and I happen to love that album. the first two are better, and at first I was disappointed not to have another instant Tomahawk classic. but I got over that and once I gave the album a chance it turned out it's a really good listen.

Honestly, it wasn't until very recently that I could really dig Anonymous but it has grown on me and I find it a lot of fun to listen to, especially on my turntable.

This album has been described by Denison and here is the quote:

"This is more of a full-on rock album. There's no quirky weirdness – it's very straightforward for us," Denison explains. "The heavy stuff is as dark and heavy as anything we've ever done, but then there's a lighter edge to it. There's almost like this weird, upbeat [sound], what I call 'heavy pop,' and Patton totally got the vibe right away...[Patton likened it to] really heavy Beach Boys."

So you can take that description and the clip that theis posted and assume what you will about Oddfellows. I hope it will be amazing and I cant wait to hear either single let alone the whole album.

I have a hard time believing you guys legitmately like that album, meaning without it being forced.  Whatever the case, it is not a Tomahawk album.  Just because it says Tomahawk doesn't make it so.  In that case they could sound like Britney Spears and say it's Tomahawk.  Doesn't work.  I am not saying it sounds like Britney Spears obviously, just making a point.

I probably would have agreed with you a few years ago but I think once you allow yourself to accept it for what it is and not hold it to being what you expected Tomahawk to do pragmatically, you can actually appreciate it. It has a wonderfully odd ambiance and I dig it. Of course I was pissed when I first listened to it and there were no "Rape This Day" or "Flashback" types of tracks. I think I was able to finally accept it when I heard there was a new album coming because then I could anticipate more classic Tomahawk insanity and judging by the description, I think we're in store for a good dose of that. Knowing there was something new made it easier to accept the very unique direction of Anonymous. There is nothing wrong with it other than it wasn't what I wanted it to be when I first heard it.

Standout tracks are "Ghost Dance," "Red Fox" and "Mescal Right 2."

Yeah, man. I can't even describe how stoked I am for this thing. Apparently the whole thing was tracked live with all band members in the studio playing together. That shit doesn't really happen anymore. I'm sure there were dubs here and there but it seems like the core songs are live recordings which is awesome. I think all Patton's vocals were done in separate session from the main instrument recording though. That's just speculation but knowing him and his schedule I pretty much expect that. I just want to own every aspect of this album physically like CD, LP, 7" singles, CD singles, whatever. I want it all. I hope they press both singles to vinyl though. Would be so sweet.

I'm a total nerd for this band. Hopefully they'll have some good merch at that shows. I'll buy the shit out of it.

well, fuck you then. I happen to love it, and I didn't force that in any way. I knew before it came out that it would be different from the earlier records. I listened to it once and put it aside because it wasn't the Tomahawk I wanted. didn't mean I hated it or tought it sucked. some time later when I listened to it again I loved it right away, and it got better with every listen.

pretty sad that you disregard something so easily. and yes, it's a Tomahawk album. it's the members of Tomahawk playing music together, and the album says Tomahawk on the cover. now shut the fuck up.

Wow, doesn't take much to get you upset.  Nothing I said was offensive.  So if they released an album that sounded literally exactly like Britney Spears under the Tomahawk name, you'd still call it a Tomahawk album?  Pah - lease.  Sure it would technically be because it was published under that title but you know what I mean.
Title: Re: The Various Projects of Mike Patton

yeah, it pisses me off when you come in here and try to state as some sort of fact that Anonymous isn't a good album, and everyone who likes it is kidding themselves. if you had just said that you don't like it, I would be fine with that. but you act like a douche and put words in other peoples mouths.

as for the Britney Spears comparison, of course it would be Tomahawk if it actually were Tomahawk, but I fail to see how they could create something that sounds like Britney Spears. Anynomous isn't that far from their original sound, it just consists of very different songs. don't like it? fine. but don't act like it's somehow wrong to actually like it.

It does sound THAT far.  That was my point.  It sounds NOTHING like Tomahawk.  And I didn't say it was wrong to like it, or it was factually bad, just that I had a hard time believing any Tomahawk fan legitimately enjoys it as a Tomahawk album.

I think he sounds great. I always enjoy when he take a more "mainstream" approach with his voice (for a lack of better terms). he still has his own completely unique style, but tones down the weirdness.

great song, imo. I expected something pretty straight forward, since they said it's be the most straight forward they'd done so far, but I still was pretty surprised with how easily approachable it is. but I like it.

Faith No More played two new songs in London and Poland. That's a total of three new songs since the reunion. I'm willing to bet there will be more.

You and some others fans get ready for a big girlie screeching after reading this

In my opinion very cool :D
