I've never been a fan of Slipknot ( no shit ? ) but I never wished the death to one of the members. Bassist Paul Gray was found dead this morning. I feel sorry for the Slipknot fans out there, maybe there are some here.
Sucks, been reading this all over the web/Twitter....he was young, too bad..

Not a fan either, but I feel sorry for the fans and family too.
lol, your name is great
Woops sorry for the duplicate thread, but thanks for merging.
np. you made them at the exact same time, so you really couldn't know :P
anyways, this sucks. I used to be a fan but consider everything they did after Iowa to be utter crap. that's besides the point though, they're all really talented musicians (except for Cory) and seem like a good bunch of guys.
RIP.
Cory is talented as shit. Are you high?
I totally understand why people don't like Slipknot ( even though they are a little guilty pleasure of mine ) But I think they are all pretty talented for what they do. Especially cory. He has to be one of the best singers out there
Corey Taylor is a good singer. But one of the best, that's exageration.
I don't think he's useless, but he completely lost his voice with Slipknot and he mostly sounds like shit live these days.
and I kinda want to blame Slipknot's downfall on him. their best material was written before he was even in the band, and once he formed Stone Sour, Slipknot started sounding like them.
Hm. I don't know. I think he still sounds pretty dam amazing. But I haven't heard him live in quite a while.
I'm a Slipknot fan... and I'm a Stone Sour fan. How anyone can say that Corey's voice is shit is beyond me.
Furthermore this isn't about Corey.. its about Paul... 38 is too young... and it's very sad. I think his girl is pregnant.... Drugs and rock and roll do not mix, folks... =(
#2, you will be missed.
I'm all about drugs and rock and roll. 38 is too young indeed. But I'm sure he lived a couple good years in there

According to the Des Moines Register, Urbandale, Iowa police are investigating the death of SLIPKNOT's bass guitarist at a local hotel.
Paul Dedrick Gray, 38, of Johnston was found dead at approximately 10:50 a.m. today by an employee at TownePlace Suites (pictured below), 8800 Northpark Drive, police said.
There was no evidence of foul play, police said.
According to KCCI.com, the Polk County Medical Examiner's Office is assisting in the death investigation and will perform an autopsy on Tuesday. Toxicology testing will be completed to determine if there were any contributing factors in the death of Gray, police said.
Witnesses reported that items from the hotel room were carried out of the hotel around 2 p.m.
Gray was born in Los Angeles, California, and later moved to Des Moines.
Wikipedia shows that Gray has been married for two years to GodsGirls' Brenna Paul and has a tattoo of her name on his knuckles.
In a December 2009 posting on his MySpace page, Gray revealed that his wife was pregnant with the couple's first child. "I am the happiest man on the face of the earth — literally!" he wrote. He added, "This has been the best Christmas I have ever had!"
In April 2010 it was announced that Paul Gray had joined HAIL!, the supergroup featuring mainstays Tim "Ripper" Owens (BEYOND FEAR, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, ex-JUDAS PRIEST, ICED EARTH), David Ellefson (MEGADETH) and Andreas Kisser (SEPULTURA). He was supposed to replace the group's original member, David Ellefson, who was unable to take part in HAIL!'s upcoming touring activities due to his renewed collaboration with MEGADETH. At the time, Paul Gray stated about his involvement with HAIL!: "This is going to be amazing! After I heard the news about David reuniting with MEGADETH I touched base with Andreas and everything fell into place pretty immediately. I was excited about what they were doing and their whole attitude is just cool, old school camaraderie and fun and I wanted to share that with them. Fortunately, I had this window of time available as SLIPKNOT are on break so the timing worked perfectly. These guys have been through it all and they represent true metal brotherhood. I like that and I'm glad to now be a part of it. I can't wait, I wish we'd leave tomorrow. These shows are going to kick ass!"
Back in 2003, authorities agreed to drop drug possession charges against Paul Gray in exchange for Gray's acknowledgement that he was on drugs when he was involved in a minor traffic accident (Story#1, Story#2) in the summer of 2003 in Des Moines.
Des Moines police arrested Gray on June 1, 2003 after his car collided with a car at Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and Carpenter Avenue.
A police report at the time said Gray "had impaired balance, slurred and dull speech, and extremely sleepy and dull behavior."
In the November 2008 issue of Revolver magazine, Gray spoke openly about his struggle with drug addiction and how it affected SLIPKNOT during the songwriting and recording process for both 2001's "Iowa" and 2004's "Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses".
"I was pissed at Corey [Taylor, SLIPKNOT vocalist] and Jim [Root, SLIPKNOT guitarist] for doing [their side project] STONE SOUR," he said. "I thought, 'Fuck, we should be working on SLIPKNOT.' But we really needed that time apart. During the downtime I played with UNIDA and jammed with friends, but mostly I did a lot of drinking and some drugs — some heavy, heavy drugs...lots of heroin. I was shooting speedballs every day. And then pills. I was on everything, man. In the beginning I kind of had my shit under control, but after a while, no. I became an addict."
He added, "I wrote a bunch of stuff [for 'Vol. 3'] — like I do every record — but I would spend half the time in the bathroom [shooting up]. I'd be trying to play, and I'd fall out of my chair a couple times and fall asleep in the middle of tracking a song. There was a lot of depression going on. I wasn't mad at anybody, but everyone else was and I felt, 'Oh, fuck, my family is falling apart.' This has been the best thing that ever happened to me. And once you get to a certain point with drugs it's fuckin' so hard going through withdrawal. It's not that you don't want to quit. You just can't. Halfway through the record, the band had an intervention on me and I ended up going to rehab."
He continued, "Going through rehab in L.A. kept me good for a little while, but then we got back out on the road and I just knew too many people and I started using a lot again on and off. I had some near-death experiences — nothing I'm gonna go into any detail about — but I definitely pushed it to the very end and I'm still here. I have friends, though, who pushed it just the same way, and they are dead. Finally, I got left in rehab at the end of the arena tour with SHADOWS FALL and LAMB OF GOD and I missed the last six shows. Then, afterwards... Well, idle hands do the devil's work. I met my wife and she stayed with me and helped me, but then I'd full on run with it. Finally she said, 'I can't sit around and watch you kill yourself.' I was living in L.A. at the time, which wasn't helping because it was so easy [to get drugs]. So, I moved back to Iowa with her and went to my doctor and got straightened out. And it's been a good couple years now that I've been clean."
Not a fan of them but he was way too young to be die. Rest in peace.
that's the greatest thing about it.... you can rock out.. or you can mellow out. It's NOT just ONE thing. Liam is a hugeeee Slipknot fan.. I hope he's cool.

Thanks Cyn I'm cool, I'm seriously shocked though, I seriously feel like crying.. I can't believe it. Not only was he the core writer of the band, he was also very humble and grateful for his success in Slipknot. Use to read his Myspace blogs and shit, the guy was awesome.
This is the end of Slipknot, they've always said they wouldn't carry on without all original 9 members. I feel really gutted for the guys and his pregnant wife. RIP Paul!
i loved slipknot in junior high and paul was always my favorite for some reason. i can't really stand their music anymore but that makes it no less tragic.
The end of Slipknot. Damn, man, I don't like their music but that sure does make you feel something.
Strange to think about
Despite the criticisms of Slipknot, I still truly believed their next album would've pushed them to headlining a stadium show (not that it's the ultimate goal in a bands life) but to think that if they should carry on and it happened, it would be without their brother who was there for every stage of it all.
Ahh man it's fuckin' sad :(
Paul was one of the most important members of the band concerning work ethic and unity, and as Liam said really humble. I remember reading an interview with him and he was really down to earth and had this cool vibe of somebody who felt blessed. A fucking pitty, another life and a lot of dreams were murdered by drugs again.
listening to the s/t record now. I had forgotten how good some of these songs are.

Not the biggest Slipknot fan but I respect them for bringing harder music to the kids, have met many younger metal heads that quote Slipknot as being one of the bands that first got them into metal
Shitloads better than being into The Jonas Brothers or Justin Bieber imho.
Any man that played in Unida gets my respect.

Boo hoo hoo, a shitty musician I never even met died. I'm gonna go cry now.
I'm not crying.... it's sadness that music that I have been listening to.... is over now... they will be done.
Quite similar to what I'm sure some NON Deftones fans were saying when this happened to Chi... Ohhh boo hoo.. some shitty musician is in a coma... blah blah... when quite the contrary... he was NOT a shitty musician... and he happened to be a great human being.

It was a little bit funny
So question then. Seeing as how I have never really paid enough attention to stuff like this. It seems like this guy was probably THE big creative force behind slipknot. Does cory write all of his own lyrics? Or do other members of the band do it too and he just sings them?
Well, Scissors was my favourite of their songs, and the breakdown at the end I consider to be the heaviest thing done in metal yet. It's not necessarily the loudest, or the fastest, but it's the heaviest because it has the angriest atmosphere of anything. Anyway, getting back to the point, I believe Joey Jordison, the central drummer, wrote the lyrics to Scissors, so I don't imagine Corey does everything. I also believe Shawn Crahan (Clown) was a lyrical contributor. Though those three were the absolute founding members, through all incarnations, weren't they? Paul Joey and Shawn? They're the three originals. I imagine they were a large part of the driving force behind the band. So I believe it'd be even harder to come back from that then if the 9 were a bit more democratically creative, and all original members.
Paul's contributions were often some of my favourite parts. Surfacing isn't a favourite, but I always loved the bass break. The intro to Scissors, the long outro to IOWA. I too stopped with IOWA, I bought Vol. 3 but didn't like it at all, went in a wrong direction as far as I was concerned, but I listened to these guys a lot during college, and in fact Scissors came on Shuffle on my iPod today on my way back from work. As per usual, I rewound the breakdown at the end 3 times to keep listening to it.
Also I believe the point of the picture with Paul is that the 'Hope' in 'All Hope Is Gone' is obscurbed. It basically says 'All Is Gone'.
RIP dude.
There was a Slipknot conference

is it just me, or did his wife seem like the most calm of them all?
but yeah, like Vesanic said - anyone is entitled to be "cheesy" in a situation like that. it was their best friend, husband, soon to be father and, as they pointed out, the driving force behind the band and the glue that held them together.

Nice post.
It's all about perspective and taking the Slipknot hate out of the equation.
I met a 17 year old the other day who commented on my Deftones cap, said he loved the band, and that Slipknot was the first band that got him into harder music. He moved on from that and had been searching out new harder rock, found the Deftones, and was now checking out as much metal as he could.
Don't be a hater purely because you dislike the music. There's a bit more to it than that imo.

I don't know. Sometimes silence is best in situations like this. As some of the members of the band showed. I just thought it was a little cliche and almost self indulgent at points.
lets just put it this way. My friends already have instructions on what to do if I wake up dead. And they know I would be pissed the fuck off if they acted like that.

I was being ironic. I said "wake up dead" too. Thats obviously not possible either.
But see, this is why you talk about these things before hand. So that they know what would have pissed you off, and they don't do it. Especially not on national television
It's kind of different if you have a few million fans expecting a response or media reaction.
After all we wouldn't even be discussing the issue if he wasn't in a band.
Who says I don't have a few million fans?
lol
Nice to see your still a cocky prick bro.

;)
Hey, you're talking to the Sharing Lungs 2008 Best member and sexiest male. And don't you ever forget it.
No I'm really not trying to sound like a tool though. I think it was just Cory. It almost just seemed like he was putting on a show to me or something. But I'm pretty sure I'm looking way too far into it.
I hope that video provided some healing for the fans. There aren't too many artist or celebrities that could die and it would affect me a great deal. But if something did happen to one of them, I would appreciate something like this.
Dang you have chilled.Wicked.
Oh and grats on the sexiest male award but wearing uniforms give you an advantage
: p
I'm far from the biggest fan but it's clear these guys are buds.Having to do crap like a that probably pisses them off more than anyone else.Imagine one of your best buds passing only to then have to do a press release explaining your "feelings" on the matter.
Fuck that.
Yeah I recently had a friend die in Afghanistan and I was a little upset that I didn't get to go to his funeral or talk to his father. But then when I really thought about it, I wouldn't want to have to stand in front of anyone and say what I was thinking or have anyone ask me any questions I may not want to answer. I think sometimes things are best left in our memories, but not aloud. No body would every be able to truly understand his impact on my life or the experiences we shared together. I could tell people that I wouldn't be alive today if it were not for him, but they would not understand the degree of that statement. As much as I would love to share with his father, the impact his son had on my life, I just know he would never truly know what I was talking about.
So, maybe thats why some of their statements seemed cliche. Maybe they wanted to say something to help their fans, but wanted to keep it simple, knowing that if they really put themselves out there, nobody would truly get it.
Oh and yeah the uniform helps for sure. But I also have a butt chin, so really you guys never stood a chance.

Weird to see them without masks. The "Clown" looks nothing like I would've imagined.
Gotta admit, even though I've always despised them, their newest album is pretty good.
I didn't give them the time of day for the longest time because of the whole mask gimmick. I just thought it was lame as shit. But then I heard Vermillion on the radio one day and really liked it. So I bought the subliminal verses and listened to it and loved it. After that I just kind of figured that they were just having fun being a metal band, not taking themselves too serious, and thats kind of cool.
But the guys wearing the hats and sunglasses. Do you think they did that because they still really don't want their faces out there?
I dug what Paul said in the vid link.
Would be funny as shit to play a gig, rip the mask off, and then go have a beer with the punters and hear nothing but "Man that band sucked balls".
I'd giggle anyway.

Not to butt into this sob-fest thread and ruin the mood again, but I'd just like to point out that that is complete bullshit.
First of all, that is completely a matter of opinion and second, I really don't think that "heaviness" is defined even REMOTELY by anger. In fact, all of the heaviest music I've ever heard has nothing to do with anger at all. For example, I would consider anything in the entire genre of doom or drone to be way fucking heavier than anything done by Slipknot ever and fuck man, most of those bands write songs about wizards, trolls and smoking weed. Never about how pissed off they are at the world.

but no you ass. I listened to the end of scissors like that kid was talking about. Duh
Fuck you, I'm hung over as a motherfucker.
Yeah, the end of that song is like really shitty grindcore. And I don't consider grindcore to be...heavy, by definition. I associate heaviness with general thickness of sound. Not tempo or "anger".
Electric Wizard - Funeralopolis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sO7VP34n2Ps#)
That is heavy. Thick. Burly. Vibrates your entire body.
<3 Electric Wizard
I can only think of two bands that are heavier than Electric Wizard IMO, and that's Earth and Sunn0))). But I am pretty unable to handle drone. I have to say though, the only time I've ever like Kurt Cobain is when he did a song with Earth.
Earth - Divine and Bright (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDERDV3hhO0#)
Also, Earth's Hex or Printing in the Infernal Method is probably one of my favorite albums ever and would make an unbelievable soundtrack to a western movie.
Don't forget Eyehategod.
Oh fuck yes.
That's because the heaviness I'm talking about is the atmosphere, not 'literal' sonic heaviness you fucking tard.
Then how can you call a song heavy if it doesn't literally sound heavy?
I'm pretty sure you can call any song heavy. If a song feels heavy to you then it is. There's no set definition to what heavy is.
Necrocetaceanbeastiality, thanks for sharing that Electric Wizard song! Shit looks prettty cool, I had never really given them a chance.
