Title: Protest the Hero
Post by: Oldnewtype on Sep 07, 2010, 04:23 PM
OK So my roomate has been listening to pretty much nothing but protest the hero for over a month and as much as I like it I'm getting sick of it. How about you guys suggest some similar bands for me to try to get him to listen to?

The new 36 Crazyfists is quite wicked. You like them?

They're alright. I've been listening to pandora radio all morning and made a station just off PTH. All the bands they played were all band he pretty much already listens to.  Kinda learning there isn't anyone else like PTH.

Glass Casket
Human Abstract
Animals as Leaders
Periphery
Tesseract

those last 2 might be a bit of stretch, but whatever, they're worth looking into

i Think PTH have nailed a special type of formula. the combination of all 5 of their musical minds is something that isnt shared by many other bands..

awsome band!!!...cant wait for their next album!!

Just watched the "Gallop Meets The Earth" DVD last night, great stuff. Rhody is just as drunk and entertaining as usual.

yay and since im a PTH super nerd I already picked out 99% of the lyrics, even if no one here cares:

Stepped off a chair so he could learn to let loose
Learn to let loose before the pendulum wore off
In his final sound a gurgle in your cough
In his final words the pendulum wore off
Stepped off a building to find some concrete evidence
Concrete evidence that he'd never make an impact
Fiction splattered into...
Fiction splattered into fact

And his fiction splattered into another sidewalk painting on display
Stepped off a bridge so he could make a splash,
To make a splash he had to flounder like a fish out of water
???
Another lamb that chose the slaughter
Stepped off a chair so he could learn to let loose,
Learn to let loose before the pendulum wore off
And his final sound...

Stepped off the platform and he briefly made, yeah he briefly made the news
It made the news and he made the trains run fifteen minutes late
Oh what a price to pay, the trains were fifteen minutes late
Oh what a price to pay, to be the author of your fate
The trains were fifteen minutes late (to be the author of your fate)
The trains were fifteen minutes late (to be the author of your fate)
C'est la vie! a drooling old bitch and a house full of lies
C'est la vie! the little things that kill you make you glad to be alive
C'est la vie! disease in your genes and ocean levels on the rise
C'est la vie! sing a song of living before everybody dies

hmmm. too bad you were disappointed. i'm enjoying it. i've never been a huge PTH fan so i take it for what it's worth. if anything i like that it's a bit more coherent than their previous work. still... i think it's pretty sweet.

i think its fucking amazing. Digging the softer elements in this one. Gets better with each play.

Theis, I gotta agree with you. I'm going to be giving it multiple listens today, but after about a playthrough and a half, I just don't feel it. C'est La Vie is good, the ending to Tapestry is well done, but overall nothing really stands out to me to even consider it as a good album. The guitar work doesn't seem  as intricate as before, and the vocals just feel off. Might be those softer parts are what don't sit right with me.
Kezia was incredible, Fortress was probably above average, but this just feels generic.

Post by: theis on Feb 19, 2011, 07:27 PM
Yeah, the vocals especially are what annoys me. Where's the screaming? Where's the growling? Fortress was a perfect combo of different vocal styles. This album just sounds lazy, shallow and uninspired.

Loving Volition so far. It improves on everything I didn't like about Scurrilous (I.E. Rody's cringey lyrics and general lack of screaming). I still keep wishing with every album they'd try and expand their sound a bit though, I think at this point they're in danger of getting stuck in a rut if they don't start trying different things soon.
