Title: TV Series
Post by: black coffee on Feb 22, 2011, 06:08 PM
Just thought we could need a place to discuss tv series as well!

So I've started with  Kings  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kings_(U.S._TV_series)), which convinced me in an instant! It's loosely based on the Biblical Story of King David. That's what I call intelligent television.

I heard FlashForward  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FlashForward) is supposed to be good as well. Anyone seen it and can maybe say something about it?

Community  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Community_(TV_series)) is something else I wanted to check out. Opinions on it?

Too bad I'm not really getting into Mad Men. Watched 4 episodes and it hasn't really pulled me in yet. Is it getting better with the 2nd season maybe?

I love Community. Great cast, great humor and the character of Annie (Alison Brie) is my absolute dream girl. She's just perfect...excluding her neurotic elements.

Favorite shows:

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia
Californication
Twin Peaks
Sons of Anarchy
The Office (US)
Community
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Undeclared
Freaks and Geeks

New favorites:
PARTY DOWN (so awesome)
Parks and Recreation
The Walking Dead

If you just stick with Mad Men, I'm sure you'll come around. Finish season 1, it'll get good, you'll get addicted, don't worry.

Community, I can;t recommend enough. The entire cast is perfect (Annie's neuroticism makes her even hotter!), even the random recurring supporting characters are great. Its writing and pop culture references are genius, and they get really creative with some episodes, spoofing other shows and movies. Enjoy it while lasts, because there's a rumor NBC might kill it after this season. Its 2nd season might be the best comedy we have this year. (Yes this season is better than the recent seasons of 30 Rock, Philadelphia, Archer, Parks/Rec).

Flash Forward, I gave a shot, mostly because Dominic Monaghan was in it after he left Lost. IMO it sucked balls. It just didn't go anywhere, got boring, and I gave up after about 3 episodes. Apparently, ABC rightfully gave up a couple months later.

And yeah Kings should still be on the air.

I'm almost done with the season, which is too bad really.

The first episode of Flashforward was actually quite good! Hope it doesn't get worse from now on.

And I'm not so sure if Community is gonna be my thing. It'd be too bad, because I've been looking out for some good comedy series.
The League was rather lame for instance.

Perfect description. "I guess we're a doing a bottle episode!" Community is a great show for the geeks, and I say that with the utmost respect. It's a shame though that shows like Outsourced, The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men gets more viewers than Community.

Parks and Recreation doesn't get the full respect it deserves. It has a great cast of characters, and of course, Amy Pohler. 30 Rock has been rather lackluster this season, but I continue to watch it just because Liz Lemon is my twin sister from another mother.

My buddy's gf claims to be the real life incarnation of Liz Lemon. I say she's not since they're practically engaged. She says something about liking night cheese. I tell her she's dating the wrong dude.

Cheese is amazing, period. I have said this numerous times, but if I could, I would marry cheese. I find myself in a lot of Liz Lemon moments where I act like a total spaz in public or encounter similar man problems as she as. For a while I had a "Dennis" in my life. There are certain mannerisms I have that are similar to hers. It's hard to explain, but my brother on occasion calls me Liz Lemon. I related a lot to last week's episode.

Yep I read somewhere that the secret behind the blackout would be unveiled in the second season, which obviously never aired.

To be fair, maybe I don't get most of the jokes, because I don't know any names of professional American Football players and also don't know the occasional ex-football player/trainer who gets a cameo in the show.

A similar problem that I had with The Big Band Theory, is that I didn't find any of the characters likable. Probably the funniest of the group is the stoner guy, but he's also too much of a stereotype as well. The idea behind the Eskimo family tree is brilliant, though.

Another recommendation I received - Do you know / what do you think of  The Prisoner ( 2009 )  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Prisoner_(2009_miniseries)) ?

I just got finished with the second season of Parks and Recreation. It's a really good show and not only is it funny, but I'm impressed just how well thought out some of the story lines have been.  None of the story lines are rushed, they have been slowly building to help make the characters three dimensional.  Very impressive.

ahhh another show I watched...and another warning. It's been canceled after the 1 season. But I would still say it was worth watching. Slow at times, but damn it had a great story with brilliant writing and acting. Sadly, it's downfall was that no one watched it.

Title: Re: TV Series
Post by: chick de la lynch on Mar 03, 2011, 04:27 AM
I think Andy is rather cute, albeit very stupid. But it's okay because it isn't an annoying stupid, just a funny stupid. I could see why April would want to tap that.
Title: Re: TV Series
Post by: defskull on Mar 03, 2011, 07:26 AM
Yeah I just caught up with Parks & Rec.  Andy is great.  The thing about his stupidity is that it seems realistic.  He is an earnest, simple person just using all the knowledge he has to the best of his ability. The problem is that he just doesn't have much knowledge. But his effort in trying to do things is what makes it so endearing to watch.
Title: Re: TV Series
Post by: chick de la lynch on Mar 04, 2011, 12:40 AM
That's a pretty good assessment of Andy's character. He does have his moments where you're like "Oh, he does have a brain". He has a good heart, and overall he's just a very sweet guy. It just takes his brain a little time to catch up with his heart.

"When I'm done eating a Mulligan's meal, for weeks afterwards, there are flecks of meat in my mustache. And I refuse to clean it because every now and then a piece of meat will fall into my mouth." Classic Ron Swanson.

I am loving Adam Scott on Parks and Recreation. He definitely adds normalcy to the rest of the cast, while being funny at the same time. I'd really like Ben and Leslie to get together. They would look cute together.

I watched the first episode of Party Down a month ago and I thought he was funny and charming without being over the top. I don't know why I stopped watching that. I also got half way through the first season of LOST, too. It's not that they're uninteresting shows. I guess I've been distracted lately. That, and watching tv shows is more time consuming than watching one movie. I need to start watching those shows again.

I disagree. I think watching tv is so much easier than watching a movie.  With a movie I have to invest at least an hour and a half of time but with a tv show you are only required to invest a minimum of 20 minutes.

It obviously depends on the Tv Series you're watching. One Breaking Bad episode is 45minutes, so watching two equals a movie. And if I watch an episode, a second one is more than likely to follow afterwards. But maybe it's just me.

See that sounds like more of a hassle, because I'm one of those people that cannot just watch one episode. Especially if it's a show I can really get into. I watched the first two seasons of Dexter within a two day time period--very time consuming. Watching a movie, however, it's done after two hours.
Title: Re: TV Series

True. I very rarely only watch one episode at a time for a show. But I guess I like the mindset that I'm not required to put as much time into it.  I hate watching movies and having to stop in the middle for something so if something were to come up all of a sudden I like that with tv I have more chances to have a good ending point and go do what I need to do.

I've got some hopes for Falling Skies. Spielberg usually hits the alien theme dead on, and for him to go into the tv medium is intriguing. But the network it's on and that it's starring Noah Wyle are some warning signs for me.

I've been loving this new series on FX called Lights Out, about an older boxer coming out of retirement due to several issues

Got some good writing and acting, including a couple dudes from The Wire. They're setting up a sweet finale in a couple weeks, hopefully with no big cliffhangers because I have a feeling that it'll be another good show to be canceled after only one year.

Title: Re: TV Series

I haven't had to try downloading the show online but usually a quick google search of "justified + episode title + megaupload" finds some working link. But that gets time consuming since it's about 20 episodes in now. So I found this http://eszacktvseries.blogspot.com/2010/12/justified-mediafire-links.html (http://eszacktvseries.blogspot.com/2010/12/justified-mediafire-links.html) only got the first 16 episodes and it seems to need real media video player, but the links look solid.

Episodes is a fun series. I never watched Friends and thereby had no idea who Matt LeBlanc is...it's a nice filler, but not something I would die to watch.

By the way, the Season Finale of Californication is on Sunday. I'm kinda happy about it, because I've got enough of it.

Now that the Family Guy season is almost over ( two episodes remaining ), I am looking forward to the new South Park season, starting April 27th, sw33t.

Californication, Family Guy and South Park are the three shows I could never get into. Californication is way too shallow for my liking. I know it's supposed to be a shallow show, but it's not something for me. I always felt like Family Guy had no heart. You have some interesting characters, but they're merciless towards one another. I can't stand shows like that. I will say Family Guy is smart and dirty, and I can appreciate it on that level. I used to watch South Park when I was younger, when I was 9. As I got older it just didn't seem all that funny anymore. South Park is a show I grew out of. I still can't believe it's still on the air.

I think I just pissed off 90% of this board.

Your taste in music, movies and tv series sucks. Who's pissed off now?

I'm kidding, of course.

You do have a point there, especially about South Park. I don't even understand why I'm still watching it. Part of it is probably nostalgia, but it's still fun to get high and watch South Park. Works every time.

About the same applies to Family Guy, but it does have more depth. The characters are pretty rude towards each other like you mentioned, but that's also what makes it so hilarious to me. I'd say half the episodes of last season were meh, but there are always enough good ones that make me stick with this show.

I remember being a huge fan of the first season of South Park. I think it was the fact I grew out of potty humor around that age. I watched the Mormon episode a few years back and I was just not impressed. I still love the zombie episode of the first season and killing them with Worcestershire Sauce. At least that's how I remember it. It was many years ago.

I can watch an episode of Family Guy and feel okay about the show. It's fine in VERY small doses.

Yes Mazzy, the wire is incredible. It starts kinda slow but stick with it.  I have been watching the x-men cartoon lately. About halfway through season 2. It's fun. Wolverine is hilolrious.

Watched the first two episodes of  Portlandia  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portlandia_(TV_series)) yesterday. The characters are a gathering of weirdos, living their absurd lifes in Portland, Oregon.

Also I gave  Episodes  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Episodes_(TV_series)) a chance. It is about a married couple, moving from London to Los Angeles for a remake of their British sitcom, and the programmers force them to cast Matt Le Blanc.
I didn't think it was bad, just not THAT funny.

I've seen Portlandia. I still don't know what to make of it. The hipster in me loves to see Aubrey Plaza as well as the obscure jokes. But I didn't find it all that funny. Then again I ended up watching like 4 episodes in a row, so it must be somewhat entertaining.

OK.

started watching the wire yesterday. spent the entire day watching it. IT'S OFF THE HOOK!!!

i'm up to episode nine from the first season. i love omar. i'm kind of looking at him and thinking 'man, it's not going to end well for you.' that's the feeling i get anyway. seriously, putting in a gay black drug dealer who's so gangster and so homo was a brilliant move. wow.

a lot of hot black guys. AND i prefer idris elba with an english accent.

I was trying to be helpful.  You didn't like a serial drama series so I recommended reality tv.  If you wanna take it as a joke go ahead and tell your colleagues.  Maybe you'll end up telling it to your boss who's undercover!

it's very bothersome that a union flag is flying in the sky as opposed to the aboriginal flag.

currently i'm making my way through the x files. never really watched it all that much and a friend of mine convinced me to watch the whole series as i'm always looking for shows. first season was alright but nothing to get too excited over. still i'm enjoying it even if david duchovny often under or over acts.

x-files gets a lot better. the overall story and recurring characters are great and all, but what made that show stand out to me were the stand alone episodes with the creepy shit happening.

wasn't the cocoon bugs in the forest episode in the first season? still might be the most memorable episode to me.

fox mulder is perrrrfect. i really loved season one because you got to see and enjoy the interaction between scully and mulder as they start to get to know each other, but i think season five is my favourite season. i didn't think much of season seven but i enjoyed the episodes william gibson worked on. i kind of want to say stuff about later seasons but i don't want to spoil anything for you. it gets very very interesting as it goes on. and mulder gets more and more fucking adorable.

Wow, coincidentally I just caught a couple episodes of season 5 early this morning. I got home, turned on the tv, and holy shit BBC was having a little x-files marathon. saw the one with the treeman or whatever was pulling kids' parents into mud pits to kill them. AND then a forgotten episode, but still a classic, the vampire one with Luke Wilson and the Great Hambino from the Sandlot. Purposely campy, and so incredible.

fabrizio: so what happens is, one guy comes into another guys cell and gives him, you know, a spoon.

me: this isn't going to end in hugs, is it.

fabrizio: no. so he gives him the spoon and says 'lick this'.

me: oh dear.

fabrizio: the guy licks it and gives it back, and then the other guy - well, you know.

me: makes him a cup of tea?

fabrizio: sticks it up his arse.

...

fabrizio: you know, to clean him out. before he rapes him.

me: jesus christ.

fabrizio: the bloke on oz was pretty rough with it, too. thorough, you might say.

me: the next time some boy asks me to spoon him i'm going to just walk away.

Between Parks and Recreation and Party Down, I'm falling in love with Adam Scott.

I love him. He's great in Step Brothers as well. Check out the Vicious Kind to see him do a dramatic role. He has ridiculous range.

I saw Step-Brothers last year, and while the movie was absolute shit he was the only thing that made it worth watching. I've never heard of the Vicious Kind, but I guess I'm going to have to check it out now.

I'm really glad you like the show. It's one of those shows you can watch when you're having a bad day and then suddenly you feel better. Unfortunately it's not doing so hot in the States, but I heard they're picking it up for another season so it must be doing well enough.

yeah you probably should check it out. It set everything up nicely for the whole series. The new detective, Holder, is so good on that show. Probably my favorite character.

yes! I did a few months ago, and loved it. I still don't get how I never heard about it until you mentioned it. Should be a lot more popular. And I didn't mention it earlier but one of the other main characters in Game of Thrones is Mark Addy, who was Piggot in 1983.

i loved the first season, then i stopped paying attention half way through the second season. it started getting way too heavy on the romantic angle of things, glorified the asshole that is jeff winger to an unrealistic extent, and fell into some classic sitcom stereotypes that it had avoided in the first season.  it just felt a lot more fresh then. maybe it got better after i stopped watching. still i love the first season and i think donald glover has a bright future in comedy.

Yeah I kind of feel that way, too. This season feels a little more melodramatic than the first season, and Jeff seems like bigger dick these days but somehow the characters still manage to remain likable. The past few episodes have been funny and impressive, so I forgive it for maybe going into a mainstream direction but not really mainstream. I think it has still remained loyal to the geek fan base, and when you compare it to everything else on television, there's nothing like it out there.

It totally has. The show still features incredible writing and story ideas. They've mastered the one-off episode. Like the Halloween one, the Pulp Fiction episode, the paintball episode, etc.

I felt Jeff Winger went from likable asshole to Complete douchebag. I also hate how all the other characters treat him like royalty. I just never got why they went that direction with him. He kind of ruins the show for me a lot of the time because I hate him so much and they glorify him so much. Also not enough Chevy Chase anymore.

i haven't, but i will eventually. however, i've read various articles that supposedly this is one of those rare occasions that the remake is superior to the original, and that this new version has made changes for the better.

she's really good in this so far. i haven't seen true blood yet. she's still a really good looking woman, but i remember when i first saw her in Homicide: Life on the Streets like 15 years ago. she sported some short hair that did it for me, kinda like mia wallace from pulp fiction. but like you said, even in that show her character was not very likable.

While I'm posting in this thread, I may as well re-iterate how much I'm in love with Game of Thrones. All 5 episodes have been spectacular and filled with great writing, pacing and acting. Sooooo much nudity and violence. And in a cool, non-True Blood way too. Also a badass dwarf that does shit like this:

Filming starts next month and it's supposed to air again in Spring 2012. And that can't come fast enough, I can't wait to see what happens next (I'm trying to hold off on reading the books). It's amazing how many crucial characters get killed off in a first season, yet they still manage to make every single scene important and entertaining.

So I decided to give Falling Skies another try, and it turned out to be a waste of time.
It's too polished, too Steven Spielbergish, often illogical (and I know this is Sci-Fi )

For example they're joking around while aliens destroy a town nearby... what the fuck? Are they not scared to death?

The action scenes are allright, but the series is like 70% family drama with boring dialogues which sound like most dialogues in Spielberg movies.
Just like this one:

"Frank, I'm not gonna make it... buhuhuhu"

"Wait, I help you. Come on, take my hand! Baby, take my hand, we're gonna make it"

"Wuff Wuff"

"Spike, get the rope! Yes, the rope! You're a good dog. Bring it to me, drag it, drag it!!

"Wuff"

"Uargh. pffff hurrrrrrrr"

"Drag harder Spike!
"Wuff Wuff"

Don't let it go, Darling, don't! Dear god, don't let her go! You're gonna make it!"

"Margereeeeeeeet"

"noooooooooooo"

That sucks about Falling Skies, I've been wanting to try it out, but several people have warned me it's not worth it. This has been my summer tv watching: Breaking Bad, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Louie, Wilfred. And re-watching Game of Thrones with some friends. God I love that show.

I remember watching Duel when I was like 9 or something...had me on the edge of my seat.  It pops up on one of the main channels every year or two at like 1 in the morning and I always make a point of recording it, and forcing someone to watch it with me.  Theyre always like Wow, really??'  when I tell em its Steve first.

When I first saw it, I couldn't believe it was a Spielberg movie. Really unlike a lot of what he's done (especially from what I watched of his as a kid)

And with Game of Thrones, I'm kind of glad it's as soon as Spring 2012. The production value and getting that massive cast together seems like it would take much longer to create a season. I've also gotten into the books in the last month or so. Sadly, I couldn't resist finding out what happens and am into the second book.

So of all the new shows this year, only 3 have kept me watching. American Horror Story is one, and that's already got its own thread.

Homeland has been utterly fantastic for every episode so far. Definitely my favorite new show this year. Mandy Patinkin is great, as is his beard.

Boss starring Kelsey Grammer is awesome. Acting is phenominal, as is the setting, the directing, and the story is very intriguing since other than the very personal stuff   there's a lot of non-fiction to the plot. Plus there's tits.

I was disappointed with Homeland's ending... I felt like choices they made were too easy, and not really surprising, they just laid stuff so that they can have another season...
Seeing the quality of the show, maybe I just had too high expectations, but I couldn't help to be a bit disappointed...

How did you guys like it ?

Did you really think they'd kill off Brody in the first season? This ain't Game of Thrones. I'm perfectly fine with the finale, and I like the direction they're going with Carrie. And Claire Danes seriously needs to win some major recognition for her role.
Title: Re: TV Series
Post by: tarkil on Jan 02, 2012, 07:58 AM
I don't know, I'd expected more than what we were served... I wish they found a more original way to finish the season. Not necessarily killing Brody, as this would mean a 1 season only series, but something else... Anyway, it wasn't a bad finale, I just found it a little bit disappointing...

I want the Khaleesi so bad. I'm with you on Sherlock, that show's awesome. I've been getting into some British series lately. Sherlock, Downton Abbey is pretty good, and Luther is balls to the wall amazing.

House of Lies is alright, I'm just not getting it yet. I'm sticking with it because I like some of the actors in it, but I honestly don't care about the characters after a couple episodes. They're kind of douchey. And not likeable-asshole-douchey like Seinfeld. More bro-douchey like Entourage.

Two episodes so far, and I like it.

I finally decided to give up on House Of Lies. Not even sure why I didn't quit earlier. It's not THAT funny, and pretty much none of the characters are likable.

I just finished the first season. Amazing shiz! I seriously cannot believe this show was never nominated for an Emmy while it was on the air. How could you NOT give Omar Little an Emmy? Blasphemy!

The British actors on this show also know how to fake an East Coast accent really well. It wasn't until I started watching this show that I realized Idris Elba is a beautiful man, which is weird since I've seen him in ten other things prior to this.

Archer is fucking hilarious. Pretty much everything FX puts out is quality, other than Justified. I'm so glad I checked this thread because it inspired me to finally start watching The Wire. Such an amazing show. I downloaded the 1st season and only planned on watching 1 or 2 episodes. A sleepless night later and I'm almost done with the first season. I agree with some of the earlier posts. I can't believe it was never nominated for an Emmy. However, I don't think it's the best show ever on television. That title goes to Breaking Bad without question.

Damn, I'm such a contrarian on here today. I'm in with The Wire being #1 camp. But I'll give you Breaking Bad, it might be my #2. It's at least the best show on TV currently.

But I'm not gonna sit idly by and watch someone throw a dis at Justified! Fucking love that show. Great writing, acting (maybe a certain female cast member could be done without, but whatever), and it's up there with Breaking Bad as far as dark comedies go. Also it does the multiple-villains-per-season plotlines a lot better than Sons of Anarchy. Just my opinion.
Title: Re: TV Series
Post by: jbmp1390 on Jun 28, 2012, 01:56 AM
I don't think Justified is bad. I just think it took a quite dip in quality from 1st to 2nd season. The 1st season is fantastic. And we seem to agree about a certain female character on that show.
Title: Re: TV Series
Post by: chick de la lynch on Jun 28, 2012, 02:14 AM
I don't know how I could choose between Breaking Bad and The Wire. Both are amazing shows and both deal with the drug world. It's very hard to choose one. This is causing my head to spin. I might have a definitive answer once I finish The Wire

Justified will probably be the next show I watch. I feel like for the past ten years I've been behind on watching good television. The past year has been devoted to catching up on it.

Prior to watching The Wire, I got caught up with Downton Abbey (A complete 180). Great show, great cast, great characters. I never thought I would find watching rich, British people doing distasteful things so damn riveting!

Title: Re: TV Series
Post by: bright lights, big city on Jun 28, 2012, 02:33 AM
They are close now that I think about it more. Most of what I would argue for The Wire you can say the same with Breaking Bad. The writing, the acting, the ability to make characters go from good guys to villains, or go from bad to sympathetic (Bodie is a prime example for me of a guy I ended up caring about). Both shows also have characters that can die at any moment, which is awesome. What can I say, death fascinates me.

The Wire just juggled it with cast 10 times the size of BB, and had guys like George Pelecanos and Dennis Lehane involved in some of the writing. Anyone looking for some good crime books, go check out George Pelecanos.

Can't say I tried watching Regular Show. If it is just as colorful, playful, "wtf" and sometimes surreal - then yes. What I really like about Adventure Time is how there's usually a hidden "value play" in the episodes. And it's super fun.
That's true about Adventure Time. Love when they have episodes featuring the Ice King. I just love the humor of Regular Show. It's about 2 slackers that work at a park. They're at their best when they bring a lot of movie references into the fold, especially old John Carpenter movies.

I think I am done with Justified. I tried to get in to the third season but it's just gotten so incredibly formulaic. And I thought I didn't like the Winona character before, but now I just want that chick to get merked. She served a purpose in the first couple seasons, but now every scene with her just brings the show to a SCREECHING halt. Anyway, anyone have any good dramas/comedies or mixtures of both to recommend? I need something to marathon. I'm caught up on Warehouse 13 which is great. I was enjoying Falling Skies but I'm really tired of it now, the writing just gets worse with every episode. There are no new episodes of Castle yet. I'm all caught up on Leverage, which i love. I've been trying to watch 24 but I just can't really get into it. I have difficulty sitting through 24 fucking episodes of anything just to get some real answers. Caught up on BB and no new SOA yet. Same for Hell on Wheels. Was considering watching the Killing before I read the reviews and learned that it's basically a 2 season long episode of Law and Order. I've gotten to the 5th season of Supernatural and I hate where the story has gone. I'm thinking of trying Downton Abbey. So anyone have any suggestions of good shows I haven't seen yet? BTW what are Adventure Time and Regular Show?

I don't know what else to say about Justified. I love the show, but I know your complaint about Winona. However everyone else is fantastic on that show on top of the badassery that Tim Olyphant and Boyd bring to the table.

I can't recommend Boss and Homeland enough. And Adventure Time and Regular Show are both on Cartoon Network. They're usually fun to watch with some friends like the old Spongebob episodes. Supposedly they're for kids, but there are some seriously twisted episodes.

Boss didn't work for me. I gave it a couple episodes last night, and like Six Feet Under, I stopped watching when the main character got diagnosed with something fatal.. I'm very fragile

Thanks for recommending Homeland. I'll be watching that tonight.
.. Carnivale is an awesome show that came out around the same time as Deadwood. I just finished watching it and would suggest it to anyone who hasn't seen it. It's got the little man from Twin Peaks too! ---http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0319969/

Mads Mikkelsen is doing television, finally!!!

Read about the series earlier this week, probably gonna watch it tomorrow or the day after.

Besides Hannibal, theres been some good stuff this year already... The Americans, The Following, Bates Motel. Defiance sounds promising, too, and I am curious to see how Hemlock Grove is gonna turn out.

I've been curious about The Americans, but I have so many TV shows in the I-need-to-watch-pipeline I'm not sure when I'll get to it. Warming Glow has been very kind to it thus far, but I need a second opinion because sometimes their tastes are not up to snuff. I don't get why they think Happy Endings is all that great, because it isn't.

I'm currently in the middle of Boardwalk Empire, but I haven't watched in a while. Don't be mad at me Mark, but I'm still on the first season of Justified...three months later. I'll get back to it as soon as I graduate college, I promise! Although through my brother I am starting to prove my original hypothesis--Timothy Olyphant makes all the boys' panties wet.
Title: Re: TV Series
Post by: bright lights, big city on Apr 05, 2013, 10:37 PM
It seems like I love everything, because I'm an avid watcher of all 4 of those shows you mentioned.

The Olyphant is such a man's man. I have a guy crush on him. He's like the friendly cool guy everyone wants to be friends with. Definitely stick with Justified, it seemed like the first season it didn't know if it wanted to be a strict procedural or tell some overall deep story arc. While watching, you'll definitely appreciate all the characters from Rachel and Tim the Marshals to Boyd and the insanely stupid Dewey.

The Americans is another show I support. I've been keeping up with it, and am satisfied with it. Keep in mind I initially get sucked into anything that's about that era though. The Cold War and the tensions were just so damn fascinating looking back.
Title: Re: TV Series
Post by: chick de la lynch on Apr 06, 2013, 03:05 AM
Ok, so my first impressions of Justified weren't all in my head. I guess that's why I've had a hard time watching it. I'll stick with it, for sure. When I get the chance, I'll also check out The Americans and hopefully finish Boardwalk Empire before the new season begins. Ugh, I hate school--it's preventing from watching all this nice television!

Revolution must be some of the worst shows of all time.

And as someone who watched Terra Nova and Falling Skies, I can definitely overlook certain weaknesses in a show- for instance that the characters always look like they just had a shower and then put on clean clothes ( which they cannot possibly have, same goes with access to clean water )

Another example - guns are working fine in this world, but cars don't? How is that supposed to make any sense?

But ok these are minor things - its rather the bad dialogues, terrible acting and the ridiculous decisions the characters make all the time. Takes away every slight chance to like a character.

Had to give up after two episodes.

I haven't seen the show but from what I understand electricity has been shut down by nanobots, hence cars not working. Guns don't use electricity.

Sounds like 90% of all modern american tv shows.

I finally got around to watching Mad Men. It's alright, has a good vibe to it, good acting and I like the 60's aesthetics. But nothing ever happens in this show. The plots are so lame. So many wasted oppurtunities. What is it really about? We barely get any insight in how they work, characters look like psychopaths one second only to be the sweetest most caring the next. Love affairs never lead anywhere but are ended with no explanation. Nothing ever takes off, there's no consistency. I'm almost done with the 3rd season and so far I really feel like very little has happened.

It appears to me you don't understand how an engine works.

Engines are based on a controlled series of explosions. The pistons in an engine are forced to move with each explosion, and when the energy of the last explosion runs out, there is another one which gives your car the power to keep running.

In other words, it has shit to do with electricity.

Nowadays most engines are initiated by electricity.. but not all of them. Pretty much all cars except for those with an electric starter should work fine in this world.

I'm sorry I don't come to this thread enough

1. VEEP is really really nice. It's very funny (especially if you appreciate something like Parks and Recreation), I wish there was more - two seasons only. Oh well! Recommend me something like this if you know some series, except for the Office. I know you all say it's awesome but I still haven't quite grown on it.

2. RAISING HOPE is heartwarmingly fun and strange/fucked up in some nice ways. Also, I felt strong resemblance to My Name is Earl which was also enjoyable. I wonder how different would it be to watch these shows if I was american?

3. Fuck DEFIANCE, because I always expect so much more out of a sci-fi series. It's so.. costumy and predictable. I really really hope it will get better any time soon.

4. New season of DEXTER got me excited again, it's beautiful, it's dark, it's psychological. Except for occasional awkwardness and cheesiness.

5. New season of TRUE BLOOD is acceptable. I got used to far out witchery and series' own genre

6. Guilty pleasure: sometimes I watch America's Next Top Model. It's quite intense and very white-trashy if you can bear the actual "fashion" and "models" element. Amusing white trash tv. Bitch I'm fabulous.

7. THROUGH THE WORMHOLE is brilliant. And guess who's narrating this easy-science-and-metaphysics theme and gorgeous imagery! Something like PLANET EARTH which I love absolutely. Especially with some 420

8. UNDER THE DOME is just some new series that are trying to be as mysterious as Lost. I hope it gets better because so far - rather formulaic.

Fucking Homeland, dude. Last week's episode ending made me freak out. Gonna watch yesterday's.

Title: Re: TV Series

This season isn't quite as gripping. I've been following all the way, but i think maybe they should have killed it after the first season, and just went out with a bang in the last episode. See what i did there?

Lately i've been catching up on a more interesting series (in my eyes), Broen. A Danish/Swedish crime-drama. Definitely the best scandinavian tv-series i've watched, that might not be saying much, but it's good as all fuck.
Title: Re: TV Series
Post by: Vesanic on Nov 17, 2014, 02:20 PM
Oh I totally hear you, there has to be way more interesting stuff going on, I'm still following it mostly out of fandom. I'll give you there's a bit of grip missing, which is why I hope the next episodes will have more boom to get the balance right. The plot is smart and is not too hard to follow, but yeah it easily looks tamed in comparison to the previous seasons. That being said, like I mentioned, last week's episode was really good.
Carrie's mental struggles were remarkably produced. But then again, it took Brody to give it its extra sparkle...

On a sidenote, Brody was supposed to die in the first season. They kept him because the channel asked them to. Wonder how it would have all gone.
Title: Re: TV Series

Also, True Detective. Yeah, amazing stuff to say the least. I'm pretty confident they'll keep bringing quality but I was a bit sad to hear each season would have different protagonists, stories, etc. The duet in this first season really got me.
Title: Re: TV Series
Post by: bright lights, big city on Nov 17, 2014, 02:49 PM
First off, let me say we Americans (The Americans is an incredible show too!) already remade Broen into a series that recently got canceled after its 2nd season. It was very well done about the governments and cartels and cops from El Paso, TX and Juarez, Mexico. Love me some Diane Kruger. Obivously, I've never seen the Euro original, though I assume it is awesome.

Pumped for True Detective to say the least. It's got my confidence, even if it's near impossible to top season 1. Heard that Vince Vaughn is a bad guy in S2, and it's got Rachel McAdams and Colin Farrell who are usually solid.

With Homeland, it really is a love-hate experience personally. It's full of good performances, but Carrie just pisses me off most of the time, and I hate whenever she needs to be "in loved". It could've been an even greater show if Carrie/Brody were never an item. Interesting about Brody actually supposed to be dead in S1, and it doesn't surprise that a network would beg an actor to stick around and the writers to keep him around.

But I still did enjoy season 3 and for the most part this season has been good. Just want more Saul, Quinn, Farrah, and Dar Adal! And what the hell ever happened to Virgil?!
Title: Re: TV Series
Post by: Vesanic on Nov 17, 2014, 03:29 PM
I know, right?! He was fucking neat in the first season, I don't get how Max is there but not Virgil, did something happen to him previously? I don't remember so much, sadly.

Just watched the last episode, and I liked it. Saul is one hell of a fucking character, he's been on point every season. Changes Mandy Patinkin from the Criminal Minds bullshit. Not to mention he looks infinitely more badass with all that facial hair in Homeland. No offense to Criminal Minds fans, but to me it's just another of those cop shows that try to look smart in a trendy, commercial fashion. That nerd character is fucking unbearable.

Back on topic, Carrie pisses me off as well, but for the most part, it's part of the character, so all you can do is respect the performance, even if we grunt. One flaw though,
it's pretty far-fetched how she's back at looking good, being focused and even rational ("there's never a right thing to do", blah). We didn't see her take her usual medication again. And antidepressants withdrawal NEVER looks so perfect, it actually never looks good, not so fast at least. And even if she's back on her meds, it still doesn't explain why she's so clean all of a sudden. Ah well.
Let's hope for more Quinn indeed. Fattie lover, hah. Nazanin Boniadi is one hell of a beautiful gal.

Really want to check out the original Broen now, if that's a favorite.

It's GOOD

it's really REALLY good. saga is amazing. i downloaded a version with really shitty subtitles. i was so pissed.

She's definitely the x-factor of the show. Kim Bodnia as Martin is great too. I love his acting.

From what i read it was his decision not to do the next season, as he didn't like the progression of his character. It would have to be a very different role in season 3.

it wouldn't make sense considering next season will see room for a lot of growth for his character. martin always freaked me out though. just his face. his expressions just seemed out of place.

Shameless AND Rectify are both good shows. Rectify is definitely more of a slower drama, but it is fucking brutal in its own way.

I been binge listening to Serial the last few days while walking or driving around. http://serialpodcast.org/ (http://serialpodcast.org/) Very good crime drama - just weird that my latest obsession isn't on tv. It's a real story in Baltimore, but I totally imagine it was as a plot from Homicide or the Wire.

I recently watched true detective (yeah I'm late), the whole season and it's Amazing. A ill bit slow at the beginning but totally worth watching. Best tv series I've seen since breaking bad (I have no much time left to watch tv).

Now I'm already watching The Affair. Anyone else?. It's getting more interesting, I didn't watch last week's episode though.

Same here. I was surprised that Thea Queen left with her father. But I guess that he's going to train her to be a deadly weapon.

Anyone been watching  Show me a hero. Good shit if you're a fan of the two final seasons of the wire (who the hell isn't?). A lot of the same actors involved, as well as david simon.

You better believe I watched that series. Loved it, and really loved that ending (I teared up a little). The usual great David Simon writing, great casting, with great acting.

Also, lots of Bruce Springsteen.

THIS TOO. You guys are hitting on all my tv shows lately, haha. While we're at it, what else is there? I just finished Hannibal, loved that finale. The Strain has been getting better this year. And Rick and Morty is its usual hilarious self. That sums up all the tv I been watching lately.

Can't wait for the Mr Robot finale tonight. Hope they can somehow keep up the greatness of every single episode so far.

I gave up on Mr. Robot after the third episode. Show me a hero has good ratings, but I 'm afraid it will just be the same old Hollywood trope of ignorant, racist, white people being made to realize the truth of how forced diversity can only be beneficial to their lives. I'll still give it a go.

Fucking loved Mr. Robot. Great cast, smart plot, intriguing twists, although I guessed from the second episode that
he was Mr. Robot. Now I'm wondering if they're not just fucking with him and his fragile psyche.
Any thoughts on The Leftovers? I'm halfway through season one and man, I'm absolutely fucking lost. It remains fascinating somehow, not in a "Lost" way, I'd say it's different. Although I want to slap Laurie everytime for being such a silent cunt. I do hope there's a decent conclusion to this maze.

I'm in love with The Leftovers. It's hard to not compare it to Lost, though. The journey is incredible and interesting, its loaded with great writing and great characters (and music). And that's really what the show is about, I think. The mystery just won't get solved, if it ever does.

The 2nd season credits music is even titled "Let the Mystery Be". Total troll move.

I didn't think about that, but it sure seems like he was an inspiration. There were so many good moments in that first episode alone, man. This gon be gud!

I'm up to date with The Leftovers. First season finale was something, man, now I get why the show's got that depressive rep. I predict a good future for this show, it's getting way better. The intro to the second season was unreal and the first two episodes definitely got me going.

I'm digging the music choices on current shows. Mr. Robot has Bohren, Pixies, Leftovers has Slayer, Pixies, and Metallica among others. Pretty rad. Pretty shrewd to use Santo & Johnny's Sleepwalk.

I disagree wholeheartedly. I hate how many great shows and movies are getting a sequel, out of a pure moneymaking ambition, these days. Leave Breaking Bad the way it ended (and I say that while not liking the end myself), the way it's supposed to be.

Give me some Better Call Saul instead!
