Title: Documentaries
Post by: bright lights, big city on Jun 17, 2011, 04:34 AM
surprised I couldn't find a good old thread all about docs. I'm always looking for some good documentaries to watch. Here's a classic from 1994, that I recently re-watched, Hoop Dreams. One of my all-time faves, but then again I'm a basketball junkie. this took place in Chicago when I was growing up and all I cared about was basketball too. Whole thing's on youtube in like 17 parts.

Anvil: The Story of Anvil. One of my all time favorites.

QuoteAt 14, best friends Robb Reiner and Lips made a pact to rock together forever. Their band, Anvil, hailed as the "demi-gods of Canadian metal, " influenced a musical generation that includes Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax, despite never hitting the big time. Following a calamitous European tour, Lips and Robb, now in their fifties, set off to record their 13th album in one last attempt to fulfill their boyhood dreams

Planet Earth as well as Blue Planet were amazing while under the influence. They just put into a nice zone. And there's just something soothing about David Attenborough's voice.

This was also a really great documentary, I learned a lot from it.

Finally found this one in the archives. Theis actually posted this earlier this year, and it blew me away. I think  you'd like this one, Miriam. Here's the quote from Theis.

I also watched this documentary called "Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father".

Probably the most devastating doc I've ever seen. Highly recommended.

Gonna see this documentary this weekend. Been excited about it ever since I found out it was from the guy who did Hoop Dreams.

The Interrupters Sundance trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXmm0MZLGxY&feature=relmfu#ws)

The Interrupters tells the moving and surprising stories of three Violence Interrupters who try to protect their Chicago communities from the violence they once employed. From acclaimed director Steve James and bestselling author Alex Kotlowitz, this film is an unusually intimate journey into the stubborn, persistence of violence in our cities. Shot over the course of a year out of Kartemquin Films, The Interrupters captures a period in Chicago when it became a national symbol for the violence in our cities. During that period, the city was besieged by high-profile incidents, most notably the brutal beating of Derrion Albert, a Chicago High School student, whose death was caught on videotape.

The film's main subjects work for an innovative organization, CeaseFire, which believes that the spread of violence mimics the spread of infectious diseases, and so the treatment should be similar: go after the most infected, and stop the infection at its source. The singular mission of the "Violence Interrupters" — who have credibility on the streets because of their own personal histories -- is to intervene in conflicts before they explode into violence.

I'd like to recommend a documentary I just watched called "Haze". It's all about hazing and college drinking, specifically at CU Boulder in Colorado. I'm from Colorado and came very close to attending CU so I was very interested while watching this. It's really mind blowing the amount of bad shit that comes from alcohol, just at this one specific college pretty much. You could make similar films about pretty much every other college in the nation but the fact that they used CU made it more poignant because CU has almost the worst statistics for alcohol related problems with their students. It's on Hulu if anyone is interested. Let me know what you think if anyone watches it. I'd be interested in hearing others opinions.

The whitest of white trash. When you really think about it though, we should feel bad for the juggalos. Not to generalize but most of them come from really fucked up, dysfunctional environments. It really doesn't surprise me they turn out the way they do. They almost have no choice. God I hate white trash
