Post by: theis on Jan 24, 2012, 10:34 PM
Might as well get this started early.

Discuss albums released in 2012.

So far I've been loving Lamb of God - Resolution.

Great album.

So fucking good!

I was really disappointed with this, especially after the brilliance of Bubblegum.
I agree with you on Lamb of God though.
I really had never heard them before, listened to the first track and decided they kick ass!
Loving the new Meshuggah too - hope Stef is inspired!

Let me play this through. On a normal day I work 9-10 hours, sleep 7-8 hours, and let me pretend I could use every single minute of my free time for listening to music, then its absolutely possible.

not even close. i had notifications set up to see everything that's uploaded to a certain website from 2012, and then i scan through and bookmark/download everything that looks interesting, and then mix it into the queue of everything else i'm listening to (in order of download. i'm only about 1000+ albums and two years behind on that).

as to getting the "full experience", i'll admit that i probably don't digest a lot of this stuff as much as i could. but i'm ok with the trade off. i never delete anything, and use rym extensively to help keep my thoughts straight about something. i will eventually revisit it, and it might be a nice little gem to discover in my library, or it might remain in the "eh" category...but maybe next time it will click with me. i just really love music, and i want to hear as much of it as possible. proper digestion will happen if i like something enough, don't you fret.

wat?
Hey can't a bro dig a pop album here and there? I gave that shit a listen, but it didn't click with me as it did Velvet Tongue. I liked KP's Complete Confection and Lana Del Rey's Born To Die much better.

Oh and Velvet, it seems you may the only person I can think of that listens to more music than I do. And more genres, too. Christ man that's a lot of freakin' music.

i'm not afraid to admit when i like something. i like what i like, and that's that. i will say that i really tried not to like taytay for a long time, but i just can't help it. she's like that little sister that is sometimes annoying, but you love her to death and would do anything for her, and you want to keep her safe. i've come to terms with that.

and like i said, i like to keep things wide open music-wise. i just started doing a metal radio show at a local college though, so my metal intake has definitely bumped up recently.

Yeah.. I liked Lana Del Rey's album a lot. Check out Lykki Li she rocks, and so does Frankie Rose

and if you think he listens to a lot.. I wish you could see  my iTunes Library..

challenge accepted.

i will also note that everything in my itunes library has been listened to, i don't add things to my itunes until i'm ready to listen to them.

Let me play this through. On a normal day I work 9-10 hours, sleep 7-8 hours, and let me pretend I could use every single minute of my free time for listening to music, then its absolutely possible.

yup that's about right. i listen to music all day at work.

at home i have a policy to only listen to albums that i physically own.

my car i can listen to whatever i want, but lately i've just been picking one CD to have on repeat there for a few weeks at a time, and rotate it as needed.

much respect to you. I used to have an unhealthy love for music and would use every wake hour to listen to something, finding new bands all the time etc. but somewhere along the road that kinda got lost and now I'm usually sitting comfortably with the same old stuff. rarely getting into new artists these days, which really sucks. but honestly, I find most of the new things I hear rather uninteresting and uninspired. and I've never been one to try to force myself to like something.

this is exactly what i'm trying to avoid.

i never want to reach that point where i think to myself "eh, that's enough", and only listen to the bands i know at that point. i never want to lose that desire to find my next favorite artist.

do you have a last.fm/rym or something? i'd love to make some recommendations to you. i like sharing music with people almost as much as i love finding it myself.

awesome! the blog is sorta in limbo right now because my mediafire account got shut down. :( so all the links are dead.

i'm in the process of porting everything over to http://o-discordia.tumblr.com/ (http://o-discordia.tumblr.com/) though. it's like 200 albums i need to upload though, so it's a slow process, and also i'm busy and shit. ;) hopefully i'll have everything up and running by the new year though, in time for my 2012 picks.

Yeah I've been discovering alot of interesting music I've been taking more of an interest in NZ music and found some real gems but usually the bands I'm finding have done one or two albums then dissolved which is pretty sad

my top 10 not-metal list is going to be a lot easier to figure out, i only have 13 candidates after the first round of eliminations.

however i have 19 to choose from for the metal list.

this is undoubtedly because i've listened to a ton more metal this year than not-metal.

Post by: Starz on Jan 31, 2013, 03:09 PM
It's been a good year for music. I didn't think it would be able to top 2011 but in some ways it has. Saying that though, its been quite hard for me to pick a definitive 'Top 10 Albums of 2012' because there wasn't actually one stand out album that blew my mind. 2012 has been more of an endless stream of great music with many albums I know I'll go back to time and time again. I also call 2012 the year for 'women' as a lot of great bands and artists released albums this year who were female or had a female singer.

This list is more of what I listened to the most this year rather than being the best albums of 2012 which you have to hear right now...

1. Yppah - Eighty One

I've listened to this album so much that I honestly forgot that it was even released in 2012. It felt like more of a classic album I fell in love with years ago. Definitely a summer record for reminiscing about when you and her were together late at night on the beach. Think Massive Attack beats and vocals layered over the top of Lights Out Asia's guitars and atmosphere.

2. Exotic Animal Petting Zoo - Tree of Tongues

Surprised to see this album go under the radar as much as it has. "Through The Thicket..." is probably my most played song this year. The vocal melodies, lyrics and THAT guitar solo at the end are worthy of constant repeat listens. Deftones and Dillinger Escape Plan similarities aside, this is an album with much more focus and stronger songwriting skills than their debut, partly due to the addition of second guitarist Jeffrey Zampillo who brings his Mars Volta and jazz influences to the table. Apart from the slight issue of lacking in the production department, this is one of the strongest metal albums released this year, which deserves much more attention.

3. Deftones -  Koi No Yokan

Probably my most anticipated release of 2012 and it didn't disappoint. Took several listens to fully appreciate what was going on here but that's what happens with all great albums; you need time and patience to truly marvel in its glory. Where I saw "Diamond Eyes" as being the bands most commercial release to date, having got that out of their system it's good to hear them going back to creating melody and atmosphere as opposed to full on rocking out. Here we see Deftones at their best, drawing the listener in with Chino's harmonies and stories of dark relationships and environments. This is far becoming my second favourite Deftones album after S/T.

4. Devin Townsend Project - Epicloud

Everything Devin touches lately seems to turn to gold and Epicloud can definitely be considered to be a part of that category. His ambient, new age project "Ghost" was in my top 10 albums of 2011 and he's back again in my top 10 list. Devin is a non-stop songwriting machine! Epic vocals, epic guitars, epic drumming and epic songs all add up to the most theatrical and fun album of the year.

5. Caspian - Waking Season

I'm so happy this album got made. Whilst I'm a fan of the bands previous outings, the production was always a sticking point for me and the band really needed an engineer/producer to come in and hone their craft (which I find a lot of post-rock music needs now a days to stop becoming too monotonous). Luckily for us, Matt Bayle's did just that. Gone is the self-produced sound of "Tertia" and in is the sound of classic microphones and old analogue gear recorded in the grandiose surroundings of Q Division studios in Somerville, MA. On another day this album would be number one on my list. It seriously is that good.

6. Hammock - Departure Songs

A double album is always an ambitious task for any band but with Hammock it's a welcome gift, as you can never get enough of their ambient, dreamy guitars cascading over haunting vocals and drums. With "Raising Your Voice..." they set the standard for what beauty should sound like coming out of a pair of speakers but yet again they've raised (pun not intended) the bar with this release. For long and lonely cold nights.

7. Hunting Grounds - In Hindsight

Debut album from Australian band Hunting Grounds who do the indie space-rock with synths and vocals to astoundingly good effect for a band so young. Think The Music meets Empire of the Sun and you've got the ingredients for an eclectic mix of reverb drenched melody and maturity.

8. John Talabot - Fin

Despite being released in the early parts of 2012, John Talabot's 'Fin' was a late listen for me despite lot's of rave reviews and publicity. Mainly set in the organic side of house music, Fin showcases beautiful craftsmanship with his beats and samples and somehow manages to stray away from the usual 4 to the floor cliche of house but still remains cemented in its roots. Pional offers some great vocals on a couple of the tracks here which adds to one of the best electronic albums released in 2012. Good stuff.

9. Now, Now - Threads

This trio offer one of the unexpected highlights of 2012 with their etheral and melanconly indie/pop. The atmosphere is created through a combination of crisp guitar layers, understated synths, the intriguing mix of Cacie Dalager's lower-tone whisper and Jess Abbott's floating harmonies and meticulous work on song structures.

10. Air Tycoon – Winter Purple

Joining other rising instrumental hip-hop artists like Clams Casino, Illinois resident Joe Garcia is making infectious and colorful tracks under the moniker Air Tycoon. Winter Purple is a tour de force of chopped-and-screwed beats, hauntingly catchy and manipulated vocal samples (as on "Minimal" and standout track "Care For You"), cavernous bass, and atmospheric synth work that ought to impress even the snobbiest Boards of Canada fans.

Tame Impala has really become quite commercial, can't say I'm suprised though. Innerspeaker was amazing.

Cool, man. Yeah it's definitely one of my favorites from last year. I think they have a pretty original sound for a sludge band.
