I HAD to make this thread since the past couple of days I've been making a bevy of Wire references. I'm a little surprised there isn't a thread devoted to this amazing television show.
I just started Season 4. Great start so far but the big shocker for me?
When Stringer Bell died at the end of Season 3. I know the characters on this show aren't immune from dying but DAMN! I was anticipating him making it longer in the show. Still amazing television. I know Omar Little dies, so I'm just waiting for that shoe to drop.
I've been rewatching with a few friends. This weekend we might start season 5. You were surprised by 3's finale, wait for 4. Actually probably more depressing than surprising, but Bubbles' story brought some moisture to my ojos.
loved every season of this show, season 4 is tremendous. I'm from Baltimore, so this show has a very special place in my heart.

I live right outside the south Baltimore city line. I can see the city sky line from my house. I wouldn't say its a war but I really wouldn't know either. All I do know is there is definitely a lot murders and heroin addicts all over. West Baltimore where most of The Wire takes place is really run down and with people selling drugs on the corners. It's pretty crazy man just being in an area like that
I finished season 4 last night, and I have to say that was the most heartbreaking season thus far. If award shows like the Emmys were run properly, the 4th season of The Wire would have been nominated for everything and won everything. Andre Royo's performance was gut wrenching and the fact he wasn't recognized for it in any capacity is heartbreaking.
It's also nice to see Little Finger out of the brothels. I'd vote for Carcetti.

that's what i'm talking bout
Is this a good show to marathon 3 or 4 episodes in a row or better to watch one a couple nights a week? I feel like I ruin some shows because they all run together and become a cluster-fuck of new characters, plot holes etc. Tried it with 24 and after season 2, I was like "Jesus, forget it." I think I would have liked that show if I had watched it every sunday night for 14 years, or however long it was. Lost on the other hand....
My argument would be that this show doesn't have plot holes, haha.
But yeah in my re-watch, we've been going about 3 or 4 episodes at a time actually. And then kind of have to let it digest for about 5 days until we're all free again to watch it. I wouldn't recommend blasting through entire seasons like Lost or 24 though, you appreciate the slow build and acting more if you take your time with The Wire.
Yeah, that makes sense. Dexter is the same way: watch a couple, let the apprehension build a few days, then you're psyched again.
Usually I plow through shows I'm super into like no tomorrow, but with The Wire you have to let it digest. Like Mark said, the most I'll watch is four, then I'll take a break for a few days and start up again. My brother, however, watched the whole series in a week. I'm on the fifth season and it has taken me about two months to get to this point. The payoff is is that nothing is blurring together into one season.
I was curious to see what everyone's favorite opening theme is. I really liked season 4's, but you can't go wrong with Tom Waits' original either.

felt like The Sopranos went off air about a season or 2 early
with this show it went off just in time and was actually pleased with the end result
best HBO series ever
Normally I'm always pro-Tom Waits, but my favorite is season 5's by Steve Earle (Walon in the series). It's really catchy to me.

I'm sorry, not trying to be a dick, but I think it's crazy that you would compare an average show like Dexter to the best TV show ever. Just my humble opinions, but that was silly.

So my GF lives in Bethesda and we drove to Baltimore to go to the Aquarium. I needed some caffeine so she stops at a gas station somewhere semi-close to The Raven's statium.... um.... I have been in some pretty shady situations in my life. I have been in some pretty terrifying situations in my life....I've been shot at plenty of times. And I was pretty fucking sure that this would be the moment I would die. A SUPER white boy getting dropped off right into one of these ghettos. They look at me like I was insane and kind of just kept a safe distance. They probably thought I had a bomb or something.
It's a really sad city. I goes from beautiful and decadent on one block to run-down and depressing on the next block. Pretty sad shit. Evidence of what crack can do to a community.
The Steve Earle theme is growing on me. Fourth is still my favorite though.
I know most of the characters on this show have a good side and bad side to them, but I REALLY don't like Marlo. He rubs me in all the wrong places. He's just super greedy and callous and essentially has no heart. He oversteps his boundaries a lot, which also irks me. I think I can honestly say he's one of the few characters on the show that just has a bad side.
I have three episodes left until I'm done with the series. So sad. My brother warned me the fifth season gets weird and he wasn't kidding. It's...weird. In the words of Clay Davis, "Sheeeeit!" (Which I've started saying a lot in my every day life lately, thankyouverymuch The Wire). Speaking of Clay Davis' catchphrase....
http://youtu.be/70eU840lc38 (http://youtu.be/70eU840lc38)
Put Clay Davis in with Marlo. He may be hilarious to listen to, but just as much an asshole as Marlo.
Absolutely. I was happy when they started pressing charges on him for all that money laundering in the 5th season. I will say Clay Davis has more personality than Marlo though.
i stopped watching season 4, but i'm now going to start watching it. fucking brilliant show.
I'm almost done with season 2 of this show and I really love it. I'm so glad I checked this thread and decided to give this show a shot. It's probably in the top 5 or 10 of best shows ever. Can someone just answer me one question? Does anything bad ever happen to Maui? I really fucking hate Maui but it seems like he never gets any kind of comeuppance for being such a lowlife piece of shit. God I hate that fucking character lol
I don't think anything does happen to him, but I felt the opposite of you during season 2. Ziggy was the guy who annoyed the hell out of me, and I loved the tricks Maui pulled on him.
RIP Lamar.
Just finished the series. I think it ended perfectly even though I didn't like some of the outcomes:
-Marlo walking
-Levy not getting his comeuppance
-Dukie doing heroin
-Templeton getting a Pulitzer
It ended the way it should have. If everything was tied in a pretty bow it would be unbelievable. And now that I have finished the series I can finally answer the ultimate question: Which is a better show--The Wire or Breaking Bad?
It has to be The Wire, but it's a very close call. When I asked my brother this question, he said The Wire due to better editing and the show being put together better and I have to agree with him. At times, Breaking Bad can be a little all over the place but not too much to where it ruins the show. The Wire ran a tighter ship. I think the fact that The Wire juggled many plot lines over the course of the series gives it brownie points. It's really hard to put into words, but it's why The Wire is considered one of the greatest television shows of all time.

agreed absolutely 100 fucking percent. When I think about it the editing and little montages The Wire did were very good, especially that last one in the final episode. Actually made my eyes water because I just knew it was the end of a long, fulfilling journey. One thing Breaking Bad has is the cinematography, though. Gorgeous locations, photography, and use of different colors.
Now the question is what are you watching next?
I just finished last ep of season 5 tonight as well... Fucking amazing show indeed, thanks guys for having opening my eyes on it (not the 1st time it happens on SL actually... :P).
When I watch Breaking Bad now, all the cops scenes look so fake, it's crazy !
No doubt, for me, The Wire is better than Breaking Bad.
Breaking Bad does indeed have a better cinematography, and the story is "cooler" (sorry, can't find a better word, but with stuff like Gus dying, Walter turning ultra bad/badass, etc.). But in the end it's less credible and less powerful that Wire. Could make it a better distraction, but The Wire is so tightly done, and coming together all along the 5 seasons that there's no way BB can be a rival.
Sheeeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittttt !
Yes, the last six minutes of the final episode was gold. I'm still thinking about it this morning, and I think the reason why that montage scene is perfect is because it doesn't try to be sad. The montage scene is like how the whole series was--just a matter of fact.
The Wire never tried to be a depressing show. It just highlighted the dark side of Baltimore, and the dark side of Baltimore is very depressing.
I love how it showed the drug world coming full circle and that no matter how many times you take out the bad guys, there's always someone else to take over the empire. And the parallelism of Dukie and Michael with some of the major players in
The Wire is haunting, sad and unfortunately truthful.

Haha, I had the same problem trying to explain why
The Wire is better! It's really hard to explain why one great show is better than another great show but it's an amazing dilemma to have.
Breaking Bad does have more interesting cinematography and hands down beats
The Wire in that category, as well as the color scheme. If you compared
Breaking Bad to any other television show on the air right now,
Breaking Bad would be victor. Compare to it to
The Wire, and it loses.

Aggh! I know, my whole summer has been devoted to
The Wire. I saw the first episode of
Justified a few weeks ago and thought that was pretty interesting but I might wait till it gets closer to the premiere date so that way I don't have to wait so long for the new season. I made that silly mistake with
Game of Thrones.

I'd recommend Deadwood, it'll help your cursing vocabulary and is only 3 seasons. If not that, Boss and Homeland are both awesome and both have their 2nd seasons starting soon.
deadwood!
OK, I've just set this to download then... :)
What about The Shield ? I heard it was (kinda) similar to The Wire ?
I've never seen The Shield. My friend says it gets bad and stale in the later seasons, but he swears by the first few. It's on my list, so I'll get to it eventually. Probably in the winter when I feel unproductive and want to stay indoors.
The shield was solid. Watch Superjail!

My mom dated an extra from

well technically Deadwood was cancelled after 3 seasons...
but on the bright side an interesting tidbit is that, according to wikipedia, the word "fuck" is mentioned 1.56 times per minute for the entire series.
Aw shit... Without spoiling too much, does that mean that we don't get to know the end of Deadwood ?
There wasn't some big grand finale, but from what I remember there was a solid conclusion. Character story arcs wrapped up, like most other shows at the end of seasons.
A decent comparison would be if Breaking Bad got canceled after the 4th season, there was a sense of conclusion but you could see where the creator still wanted to take the show. There was room for more episodes.

First couple of seasons of twin peaks are great. lynch should do more tv!
Finally started season 5 of the re-watchening with my friends. Watching it week by week, I didn't realize quickly Marlo and his crew starts fucking things up for the "good" gangsters. Fucking Method Man.
Cheese! I heard some people weren't really fond of his character because it was Method Man playing the part. I felt like he wasn't really there all that often to really complain about though. Even though every time he came onto the screen I thought, "Hey! It's Method Man!" One of my favorite scenes in The Wire and he's in it:
http://youtu.be/LfsQaeIYWoY (http://youtu.be/LfsQaeIYWoY)
My brother told me a lot of fans weren't really fond of the 5th season's plot revolving around the "murder" of the homeless men because it seemed implausible. I felt like the 3rd season's Hamsterdam fiasco was more far fetched than the "serial killer" of homeless people. Maybe I'm just weird.
Oh jesus, I forgot about that scene. I started liking the character BECAUSE he's played by Method Man, but the character is just so detestable in season 5.
And here's why the plot is believable for the last season- Lester Freaman buys into helping with Jimmy's plan. Lester doesn't fuck around. He does what needs to be done work the cases.
I love watching Gus (Clark Johnson) work too. The guy is such a boss at the Sun.
Gus is a no-nonsense type of guy. I definitely wouldn't want to get on his bad side. Templeton was such a little snot to him. It would piss me off every time Gus would criticize his work and he'd go crying to one of Gus' bosses. I just really hate Templeton.
Is this old? http://screen.yahoo.com/the-lego-wire-29977908.html (http://screen.yahoo.com/the-lego-wire-29977908.html)
I watched that after I finished The Wire. I thought it was cute. There's also this: http://FunnyOrDie.com/m/6w5b (http://funnyordie.com/m/6w5b)
Daniels and Pearlman? Say Whaaaaaaaaat? I did not see that one coming at all. That chick gets around lol
THANK YOU! Someone who agrees with me. My brother tried defending her saying Daniels' marriage was down the toilet, but I think she's got a thing for married men.
I started sensing their tension a few episodes before it happened, so it wasn't a huge bombshell when it came about.
But McNulty's the real whore.
He really is. He gets more pussy than a toilet seat. I will say McNulty has a nice ass! :P
Haha yeah you're right, Mcnulty is pretty slutty. Personally, I don't see how he does it. Not that he's a bad looking guy, but it seems like he never really TRIES to get laid. It just happens. Often with women who should probably know better than to get with a wreck like him lol
McNulty is a hot mess, for sure. He has a lot of one-night stands so those women are smart enough to not stick around. I also don't think he gives them a chance to stick around to see how broken he is. It's a win-win for everyone!
Also, I've got a serious crush on his ex-wife.
Isn't she on that one USA show now, Necessary Roughness? I only know this because my dad watches the show.
Callie Thorn? Yeah I think she is on that show now. I mostly remember her from Rescue Me because my dad watched that as well. I feel kind of bad for her as an actress. She played such a bitch on that show that now I can't really enjoy any of her other roles lol. She always tends to play kind of a bitchy character in whatever she's in though. She is fine though. Fiiiiiiiiiine!
she was in Homicide too, back in the 90s. played a detective and was actually likable.
give him props for the duck though
thats the one side of his personality that showed he was alright
ed..// im all late but im sure i read some shit about Zigg
I loved Ziggy with that duck! And the diamond encrusted collar was amazing. Too bad it couldn't hold its liquor. :/
As soon as I saw the duck I had a bad feeling haha
I have to say as much as a moron Ziggy was, I adored him. He was the comedic relief for much of the season and it broke my heart when he killed those people. He was a sweet goofball at the end of the day. He couldn't handle that.
I always liked Ziggy. Like you said, even though he was an idiot, he was a lovable idiot. Ultimately, not a bad person. That scene after he shoots those guys is one of the most emotional of the series. Also, I just finished season 3. Goddamn! Very happy that Stringer finally got got. That scene from the second to last episode when he and Avon embrace for that last time. So powerful. This is such an incredible show. I'm so glad I took the time to look at this thread and give the show a try.
That reminds of a "problem" I had around the end of season 3. WHY COULDN'T THEY KEEP BROTHER MOUZONE IN BALTIMORE??

Pretty hilarious that Rawls is closet gay lol
Really was hilarious that they through that in there, by showing him in the background chillin in a gay bar. And then not bringing it up for the rest of the series, right?
