Title: Early version of my take on Natalie Portman
Post by: grimez on Sep 18, 2012, 10:17 PM
Hi there guys, not sure of the board etiquete on such things as never posted any of my music here before, but i'm currently in the midst of recording a cover/re-write of natalie portman by team sleep. I'm a breakcore/jungle musician from london playing regularly at various size events from large underground raves to clubnights around the country. Anyway please check out this early version and let me know what you think, will post the finished version after we've recorded the guitar/vocal parts and completed it.

For me it doesn't mix well that beat is too harsh for the sweet song it just sounds like your playing two different songs at once it's like the song doesn't mix the elements but just overlaps them, I suppose you could try changing levels so they mix together better but that songs going be really hard cause its really slow and flat and as soon as you try adding in shit it's going to stick out really badly.

It sounds alright, the beat sounds a little weird or off to me...

Here's a cover I did several years ago..

Yea the beat still needs changing its mostly just in there as a placeholder whilst we're playing around working out what we're actually doing with it. I'm not really into covering songs in a similar manner to the original song, don't really see the point personally. Nice performance on that though.

natalie portman was such a good simple atmospheric tune on the team sleep leak. didn't really care for the album version live on the stage

I always loved that first live version from the glasshouse performance in 2001, they never topped that for me. Live from the stage on the album version was meh.

Now that I think about it, the main guitar riff from Natalie Portman reminds me a lot of the main riff in Rosemary...

Sorry we didn't use a tab, just worked it out ourselves, its in a dropped tuning though I think just a half step.

Chino said he didnt actually like the albums version.. It's great and Rosemary also not gonna top it. Not really looking forward too these type of songs acually anymore, Sextape etc. Chino has done it well enough by now, should move on.

If you dig this type of new wavey guitarplayin, check out The XX first album.. xx

I think it sounds pretty cool but it'd be nice if you weren't sampling the original guitar sounds.

EDIT: just started in on the vocal stuff.  Sounds pretty awesome.  Did you get your hands on a multitrack version of the song or did you just meticulously extract the vocals?

Oh fuck man I don't remember the exact settings now.. I've lost everything on that hard drive that it and dozens of my tracks I was working on were on, but I use GuitarRig inside of Pro Tools... (Stef actually uses GuitarRig now unless he's strictly using his AxeFX)  for all my guitars and bass, just direct input into the program. I have been without an amp for a few years unfortunately so I can't record it out of the cabs right now... But actually now that I think about it, I think this was recorded just from my little marshall mg100hdfx head and a marshall 1960A Cab (great Cab, btw. Pretty pricey now, wish I never sold it, along with all my guitars, amps, etc etc. Drugs are bad, mmkay).

My favorite part of my cover is the vocals during the distorted part, the outro. The "soaring" high-pitched sounds during that whole part is actually my vocals with no effects, just a little reverb... It sounds exactly like some kind of synth or sound effect, not vocals at all....

And while I am much better at vocals without it sounding all nasally and just all around better, not along with better production techniques and would actually be able to do real drums and bass and everything, I just feel that that was a song I was working on then and I don't want to go back and work on something I was at 5 years ago, I'd rather record new shit. Which is a lot similar to what I've heard the Deftones say. I'm the same way...

Na its literally the old unmastered demo, eqed and warped to slow it down! Will upload a new version with our take on the guitars soon..
