Title: Matthew Good/Matthew Good Band anyone?
Post by: godin on Nov 09, 2012, 06:41 AM
I know this is probably a person/band not many people on here know or care about, but I figured I would try to expose some of the Non-Canadians out there to a great artist.

Here's a couple links to anyone who cares:

Amazing artist. I own most of his work, both with the band and as a solo musician. Audio of Being and Avalanche are classics, in my opinion. I bet a lot of people here would be into the band/him if they gave the music a shot.

My favourite musician.

Interesting that you just happened to post/find that We Are A Place demo.  I uploaded that.

I'm very pleased to see someone making note of Matthew Good here. I've always thought of MG as Canada's best kept secret. I grew up surrounded by his music and it's always held a special place with me. And I've always been amazed that despite the health issues that have plagued him his entire career, he always manages to sound unbelievable live.

Suburbia is one of my all-time favourite songs.

I found it pretty tough to pick which songs to post for this topic, haha. The guy is prolific. In terms of UNDER RATED/appreciated Canadian Artists, I'd have to give it to Matt Mays *although I understand he's a little more appreciated in New brunswick/Nfld/Nova scotia

I know what you mean. He was all over MuchMusic back in the day. Back when they aired programs that catered to music fans.

I wish they still did stuff like this.

LOVE Matthew Good. I've been listening to him since discovering Beautiful Midnight way back in 1999. I have all of his records, both solo and with MGB. Definitely one of the most underrated Canadian musicians of the last 20 years.

I've seen Matt Good about 5 or 6 times live now. Also got to meet him through one of my friends after a show. He's a very nice dude and incredibly talented. I grew up on Beautiful Midnight.

Where did you get a hold of that song from? I've never heard or heard of it. Was it from the LOES sessions?

I thought Darling was the only b-side from that album..

Yeah it was demoed for LOES but didn't make it.  I paid for a membership called M+ for a year where he posted bits of songs and full songs as he demoed as well as other cool stuff.  It was really cool of Matt to give us such a look into the process but also took away from the surprise of hearing most or all of the album for the first time.  I'm looking forward to his next one which he said will probably be out September 2013.  He's recording it right now I believe and I've only heard some clips of them in the studio.

Are you Canadian, Black?  It's really nice to see that there's a few people here that have not only heard of Matthew Good but are fans of his music.  No other band/musician has had the same effect he has on me.  So haunting and emotional.  Beautiful Midnight is his best, followed by Avalanche.

It's nice to see some Matthew Good fans here.

I love Beautiful Midnight. I found it for $4 at Albertsons of all places! I don't know how many times I've cried to "Suburbia". "I Miss New Wave" and "Failing the Rorschach Test" are a few of my favorites off that album.

Yes, so many haunting/chilling standouts on that album.

I miss New Wave and Failing the Rorscach Test are two of my absolute favorite MGB songs of all time.

I am not Canadian, no. I saw the video for Hello Time Bomb on MTV2 late one night and thought it was an interesting song. Then I found Beautiful Midnight on sale in a store shortly thereafter and became hooked. Tracked down Underdogs and Last of the Ghetto Astronauts, and had a real bitch of a time downloading The Audio of Being on KaZaa shortly after its Canadian release.

I went to Youtube looking to download We Are a Place last evening. I ended up finding that song and about 15 other rare demos, b-sides and outtakes I hadn't tracked down over the years. Stuff I'd known about or heard once or twice but never actually had at my disposal. Now I have a sixteen song Matthew Good Rare Demos, B-Sides and Outtakes album in my collection  ;D

Nice. I've been wondering if he was working on a new record. I wasn't too taken with LOES. It's by no means a bad album, but it sounds miniscule and scant compared to his other solo offerings. It took me a long time to get into it, and I still only play it every once in a great while. His previous four solo albums and his MGB stuff I play all the time.

Yeah I was into LOES quite a bit for a little while and loved the demos as he posted them but interest in the album seemed to fade pretty fast.  I don't think it helped that I heard the demos many times before I heard the completed album but it didn't have the emotional power/connection of other albums I don't think.

I do love that he wasn't afraid to step out and do something different though.

I just checked that site maybe six weeks ago and didn't see anything about a new record in progress. He was doing his political soapbox thing about the U.S. elections but not much else. He probably started updating about the record five minutes after I left the site. My timing is impeccable..

True dat.

I read somewhere that he and Warne had been wanting to do something of the kind since 1997, or something. I think it could have been a whole lot grander in scale the way Avalanche, Hospital Music and Vancouver were. But it still had songs on it that reduced me emotionally (How It Goes) and surprised me with their direction (What If I Can't See The Stars).

I just wish it had been "bigger".

Yeah I know what you mean.  WIICSTSM was a really cool song.  What did you think of Zero Orchestra?  That's a very different style for him but I loved it.  So catchy and full of energy and very different vocal approach.

I think my favourite work from him is still with the band( either Audio of Being or Beautiful Midnight), but his solo career has been solid as well, to say the least. ( I'd put Avalanche on par with Underdogs, and White Light is probably better than Last of the Ghetto Astronauts). However, I have found that Hospital Music and everything since then hasn't been quite as amazing. Still very good, no doubt. Vancouver has grown on me as of late

Zero Orchestra was a decent departure for him. I wouldn't want to see him make a full album of songs in that style but it's fine for diversity's sake.

Audio of Being is an amazing album. I think he likes that album more than he cares to admit, even if its creation completely killed the band. There are some monster songs on that record. Man of Action, Carmelina, Advertising on Police Cars, The Rat Who Would Be King, Under the Influence. Such a great album to play from start to finish. I wish he'd have put "All Together" on there like he'd planned until the very last minute, but the album works just as well without it.

I've developed a heavy appreciation for Hospital Music.  It took a while but it might be my second or third favourite solo album of his behind only Avalanche and maybe WLRARR.  There's just so much sincerity and emotion in a lot of it.  It's a surprisingly varied album for what he was going through at the time.  I like the samples or clips in the songs and the interludes.

Hospital Music is an absolute epic. Every song, whether long or short, helps form the narrative arc of that album. Even the mighty Vancouver sounds dwarfed in scale by comparison, and that's no small feat.

to each is own. either way, stoked to see that there are this many MG/MGB fans on here. Prior to creating this topic, I only knew of 1 other fan on this forum. And like 2 other Canadians, haha.

Seen him live 4 times, including at the Masonic Temple in Toronto a couple years ago with my family minus my father, which was recorded for a T.V. appearance.  One of my favorite musicians...
Between my mother and I (who's almost more of a fan than I am...), we own all of his albums, including both versions of In A Coma, the CD only version and the version with 2 CDs+DVD...

Had It Coming - Matthew Good (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_S-Ajjk0PQ#ws)

For the first time, I am concerned about a new Matthew Good album.  The vocal style on this is not the Matthew Good I became a fan of.  It sounds Pixies-esque or something that doesn't sound natural for him to me.  It is rather upbeat and more rocking for him, which is nice every once in a while.  But none of it is anything special.  He did a more upbeat record in 2004 but that was different and worked for him in my opinion.  This new song/songs turns me the wrong way.  I really hope there's going to be more familiar Matthew Good on AoD but I have my doubts.  The extended part is better though I think.  Also, his first video since White Light Rock and Roll Review (2004).

I am really digging these new, more upbeat/catchy Matthew Good songs. I like all his styles but this sounds like its more rocked-out and free flowing than some of his recent stuff.

Agreed.  It's certainly not bad, but anything special it also certainly is not.

The new album dropped today. I have been streaming it online for the past week and I think it's his best work in awhile. Although I am usually a fan of his more "upbeat" stuff. My favourite songs are probably "Garden of Knives" and "Hey Hell Heaven".. hard to say though. Another great release by Mr. Good for sure

Yeah, this is a pretty dern enjoyable album that is possibly the most rocking of his career.  My favourites after a couple listens are probably Via Dolorosa, Letters in Wartime and Garden of Knives.  The latter is cool, love the intro and it reminds me of Beautiful Midnight a bit.  Had It Coming is more enjoyable in context of the rest of the album.  Also, a big thumbs up in my opinion, there's more passion in MG's vocals this time around.

Arrows of Desire is a very good single choice I think.  This album has a more stripped down feel a la White Light but sounds quite a bit more MGB-esque than that album and there's more going on here.  I'm glad the drumming sounds more real for this album and there's some nice bass parts.
