Title: Chi
Post by: Sugartolove on Apr 14, 2013, 01:55 AM
I'm very sorry to tell you all this but I have very sad news.

I will post what Gina Blackmore shared with me on my Chi page:

From Mom J:

Our dearest Family,
This is the hardest thing to write to you. Your love and heart and devotion to Chi was unconditional and amazing.
I know that you will always remember him as a giant of a man on stage with a heart for every one of you.
He was taken to the emegency room and at 3 am today his heart just suddenly stopped. He left this world with
me singing songs he liked in his ear.
He fought the good fight. You stood by him sending love daily. He knew that he was very loved and never alone.
I will write more later. I will be going through the oneloveforchi and any other information may not be reliable.
If you have any stories or messages to share please send them to the onelove site. Please hold Mae and Ming
and the siblings and especially Chi's son, Gabriel in your prayers. It is so hard to let go.
With great love and "Much Respect!" Mom J (and Chi) — with Jeanne Marie Cheng and Chi Cheng Prayer Page.

RIP Chi.

This is the worst thing to wake up too. Chi will always be remembered as a genuine guy that was very passionate and loving. Thoughts are with Gabriel and the rest of the guys in the band.

Yes, momma told me he had been stable and doing well for 3 weeks in a row. This was what I posted on the One love for Chi site recently. Then he was admitted to the ER and was treated for sepsis, but as you saw it was his heart that gave up in the end.

The One love for Chi website is down right now, must have crashed with the amount of traffic. I'm sure they will post more on the website soon.

I've been watching so many videos lately from the ST and WP days and it's really sunk in just how much a part of the deftones I fell in love with he was. He was a beast on bass and his backup vocals were so fucking good, not to mention he probably had the coolest personality in the band.

Rest in peace, Chi.  You magnificent bastard you.  I'm glad I got to meet and shake this man's hand...he was an amazing person.  Just tonight, I was driving home from work listening to kimdracula.  The bass...so prominent in the song.  All I could think about was how he had such an amazing ability to play the bass and it just took me back to when I first listened to deftones....it always takes me back to a better time in my life.  That's why I love this band.  Good memories are attached to their music.

I'm reallly crying as I cried to my grandmother last december :'(
He was so funny... I'll remember always one of the best shows where he takes part... Pinkpop 2003...
He always made me laugh along with Chino... Glad I was lucky enough to see him play live at least one time on 2007...
I'll miss him too fucking much.
Also, there's that interview for Telehit Mexico where they say that people often used to confuse him with Ricky Martin..
Ok.. That was... Now I can't sleep but at least he is now resting in peace.
Much love for his band and real friends and brothers, his family and all the deftones communities around the world.

Head up.

I wonder if the band will make a statement, with the way this news has spread they don't really need to and I can't even imagine how devastated they are but some form of tribute to such an important part of the band would be nice. I wouldn't expect anything right away though. Now is a time for reflection, love, remembrance and respect for the man. Hopefully someday Eros surfaces so Chi can kind of live again through new music to the fans. My heart breaks for the entire deftones family. We'll always remember him.

An incredibly, incredibly sad day. I salute the man whose music has been a core part of my life for the past 15 years. All of us here at SL will feel his loss deeply.

My deep condolences are with his family and the Deftones brotherhood at this time. No words can describe how upsetting it is to realise he's gone. As misguided as it sounds, I always thought he'd maybe come around some day and be able to share with what the band has achieved since his accident.

Gone but never, ever, forgotten. Your music will stay with me until the day I see you on the other side

RIP

I feel sad about his passing but with a sunny side twist like you have. It sucks that he didn't pull through and make his recovery, but he fought damn hard through the comatose state for 4 years, which is pretty fucking admirable of him. It's comforting to know that he's out of any pain and discomfort that he was in and think of all the lives he's touched through music, think of the difference he's made in all us and multiply that 10,000 fold. He may be gone but he's left a crater-sized mark on the world and he definitely won't be forgotten.

I was out the whole weekend, I heard about it at like 10 today. Fuck.

This is terrible. Chi's unique presence onstage has definitely done something in my perspective of live music, of emotional/artistical display. This band helped me go through loads, meet tons of great people, live many unforgettable experiences, and a guy from that band is now gone. And through all the stories shared, we can all see how special and kind he was. It is truly unfair.

I never had any kind of concrete real hope to see him up again. I guess it was just that selfish naive dream, as a fan, to see one of my "heroes" up there again. Most of us thought he would go. Despite that, I'm fucking shocked, I can hardly believe this is real.

But like a few others have said, it is good and relieving, in some way, to know that he's free. He can rock out all he wants up there.

It is a sad day for music, and not only that, of course.

R.I.P. Chi Cheng

I never thought he would be on stage again either but I hoped he would at-least be able see his son grow up .It's hit me pretty hard not just because he's from my favourite band but because I know what a genuinely kind and down to earth guy he was, he deserved to die peacefully as an old man not like this, at least he experienced alot in the time he had , he toured the world doing what he loved with his best friends and had a family. He will never be forgotten.

We all knew he was a great person with a beautiful and expressive heart and soul, and a strong one at that.. But no human being should have continued to endure the suffering he was submerged into.. Chi was in a internal prison for years, and unfortunately he wasn't able to pull through after all these years, but his soul is now at rest... He's given us a great gift, he is the essence of Deftones, we have lost a true piece of the puzzle. but it will forever live on with our memories though Deftones' music, photos, interviews, documentary, and personal memories that is unique to each of us regarding Mr. Cheng... This is a sad sad thing.  My main concern is whether or not he found salvation by repenting of his sins and trusting in Jesus Christ for forgiveness.  Because that is the only way there will be any relief.  If I knew this was the case I would be incredibly happy for him and this would be a joyous occasion.  I really really hope so.  May his family and friends look to God for comfort and let this remind them how frail we all are and how any of us can go without a moment's notice.

A lot of reports were saying that Chino posted "Rest in Peace Chi Cheng" on his Facebook, but it was a fake page. However, Chino did post this song on Twitter, which, in his own way, I believe was a tribute to Chi. Maybe it was a song Chi really loved?

Haven't posted here much, but was regular on the old deftones boards (the other, now defunct forums), where I remember Chi posting often under the bands login, Big Brothers. Felt special each time they would take time to talk to us, the login name they used says everything about how they feel about their fans. I feel privileged to have seen him play live.

Prayers, thoughts and much love to his family, including the band.

He is finally free. Rock In Peace brother.

Salvation isn't something you can 'work' on.  The only way to Heaven is through Christ.  It is by faith alone in Jesus Christ alone.  Not of works, lest any man should boast.  All the glory belongs to God.

I am not posting this to get into anything.  I will not debate as that's not the point and there isn't anything to debate about anyway.  I will talk about it if anyone is truly open to the Word of God but will not argue about it.  I am posting this because it's relevant to the topic and your post and it's the truth.  Not because I believe it but because it is from God's Word, thus 100% trust-worthy.

Religion makes people insincere , it causes people to be good through fear of going to hell not because they genuinely want to help others. Chi was better than that he was good just because he wanted to make the world a better place, he doesn't need to repent or seek salvation he did nothing wrong.

I am just speaking the truth according to God's Word.  If it bothers you, ignore it and please respect my beliefs.  True Christianity is not a cult and it couldn't be more relevant to this topic.

NZ:  We all did wrong, hence the need for the Saviour and His forgiveness.  True Christianity is about spirituality, not religion.  Religion is what man invented (works based), Christianity is God coming down to our despicable level in the person of Jesus Christ and dying for mankind's sins so it could be made possible to receive eternal life if we repent and turn to Christ and trust in His death and resurrection as payment for our sin.  It is what God does that saves, not anything we do.  Just trying to clarify certain things a bit, I will not get in an argument with you.  I have been through that enough on another forum.

What or who Chi believed is irrelevant, and there's no doubt he's at peace and at a better place than us all. Chi was a good man, compassionate and truly cared about people...family and fans. Every time I was around him he made you feel like you'd known each other for years, didn't make you feel like you were inconveniencing him for time or that he was obligated to take a picture just because you attended the show, instead he showed gratitude and that's hard to find in musicians.  Imma miss the hell out of him...his energy,humor,sound...he was,in my opinion, the backbone of Deftones.  :'(

Wow his passing has really made people go and listen to Deftones again, In like 10 years I have only ever seen 1 Deftones music video on TV (My own summer) now they're playing all of them one after another at the moment, it's amazing seeing your favourite band on TV gives you nostalgia of the times before everyone downloaded music, getting memories of the times when if we wanted music we listened to the radio or watched the music channel, Man I miss guitar music being popular.

Yeah I'm probably way more happy about this then I should be.They played half an hour of Deftones as a tribute to Chi which was cool and unexpected and they're playing a bunch of other cool shit now like Korn,NIN,Shihad,Mastodon and Tool. It was good seeing Chi at his best and smiling again I just had those photos of him post accident in his hospital bed stuck in my head, it perked me up alot seeing him rocking out.

Seriously, fuck you.
There's no call for that kind of talk to me.  Why does it strike a nerve like that anyway?  If you truly don't believe in God, it shouldn't bother you that much and you can simply ignore what I said.  And talk of these things couldn't be more relevant and fitting in a topic like this and this is not about religion.

There's nothing in the world to offend people like Christ and that is because He is truth.  People hate truth because it brings to light their true evil nature and moral accountability to a holy God.  That is all.

Yeah back on track they put this on oneloveforchi it's his blog posts from just before the accident it's funny but sad at the same time, the way he talks about his family you can tell how much he loved them and it sounds like he was really excited about Eros aswell, it sucks how something a small as leaving a minute later could have avoided all of this, There is also a photo of some candles and stuff Abe has set up around his house in memory of Chi.

I can see that everyone who has replied to my posts isn't open to things of God so I will not try to convince or persuade, but I just must say it doesn't make sense to say that this isn't the time or place.  Someone has died, this is a topic about such a person.  This is the best time to remind people of how frail they are and I am just speaking about the truth that I know of, because God has opened my eyes to it.  I know you don't understand and believe, but wouldn't you desire to tell people about the truth if you were certain of it?  You can always ignore my posts.  No one is forcing anyone to read them.

It's because you've come in with a smugness like we all are missing out when really we've made a conscious decision to not worship, then you say it's ok but then you put some condescending comment about how one day we will see you are right it's just not warranted, plus you insinuated Chi might have not made up for so called sins and he might go to hell that's just flat out disrespectful he was an amazing human being he deserves better than a man in a tin foil hat questioning his purity. Just fuck up about god now if I want someone to open my eyes I'll go see a fucking optometrist.

Because you're talking out your ass dude. Why would you even bring this up, saying that you hope he found salvation through Christ before dying, it's not relevant to anyone who doesn't share YOUR beliefs. What you believe to be the truth doesn't matter in this case. People get offended because you sound almost as ignorant as the fucktards from the Westboro Baptist Church.

To be honest, it's more the fact that you implied a genuine, good, kind, generous, caring person like Chi might not be at peace or go to heaven because he might not have accepted Christ as the saviour. If a person like him doesn't deserve heaven, no-one does. And if that's all it takes to go to heaven, but no amount of kindness without faith will let you into heaven, it's a religion with backwards priorities.

Anyway, I'm not going to comment more on that. Reading those blog posts, he was such a funny guy, and obviously caring. Shows how great a person he was that no-one has ever had any negative experiences with him. And I was thinking on it earlier how strong his family and friends have been to be strong and there for him 100% among so much uncertainty as to if he'd make any progress, when he'd make any and how much he'd make. Must be a hard thing to do, and to do it for so long is beautiful. Again, RIP Chi.

NZ: Smugness is just the way you see it.  It's impossible to convey things perfectly through a computer screen.  I mean no disrespect to Chi.  If you read my first post you'll see that I only have concern for him because I don't know his situation and hope the best for him.  I deeply desire that he is now at peace.

Crazylegs: Westboro Baptist is not a Christian church.  I do not condone much of their conduct in the least or agree with much of their ways.  I didn't bring this up to debate, I was just sharing my beliefs.  I was never overly aggressive about it, I only speak out of care for people.

WTF with that people taking advantage of such situations.. fuck them!

And as my Dad says, everyone tries to reach the perfection and salvation, and if that person adores King Sun, God, Alah, Budda, Christ, he does his best to be the best person he can to reach salvation so, as someone said before, Chi's family for sure did something to help Chi's soul in case of his passing away, so, this is a matter of no worries for us. We all know the kind of human being Chi was, and whatever his beliefs and religion was, he must be resting hopefully in peace. If you remember, he had a Jesus Christ tatoo, so it should have some meaning for him.
Btw, that words from Head were really sincere and made my heart break again because of the excellent human being we have lost :'(

I've been blasting Around the Fur the past few days. I've always loved the bass line in "Lotion" and I've grown a new appreciation for "Damone". I cried in the car when "Be Quiet and Drive" came on.

My only interaction with Chi was back in 2003 during the Summer Sanitarium tour. I was a member of Linkin Park Underground, which meant that when I bought tickets to their concert I also had a chance to attend a meet and greet with Linkin Park. Needless to say it was a pretty disappointing meet and greet where I barely said two words to the band members. I could have one item signed by the band and it just got passed down the line of each member and we were only allowed to take pictures of the band, not WITH the band. This was prior to digital cameras, so the pictures were really dark and horribly taken.

Once I got my item back and security shooed me out of the tent, I notice a guy driving past me in a go-cart. I look up and it's fucking Chi! He was honking at me and telling me to "get the hell out of way!" in a joking manner. I was star struck. The bassist in my favorite band took notice of me and almost ran me over with a go-cart.  It made up for the shitty meet and greet. I was elated for the rest of the day.

It's a great memory because it showed that Chi was the kind of guy you could have fun with and he had ability to make you laugh. I'm really glad I was able to experience that one, amusing minute with him.

Sad day today, for all of the deftones fans, when I was reading Head's story on the PRP I was getting choked up, even though we all knew this could happen we all hoped for a miracle and that one day Chi would come back but now I can say I am happy for closure for him and his family though I am sad at the same time, I feel mixed up to be honest...

I can't say that I ever met Chi, my closest interaction with him came at a show at the Roxy right after S/T came out, we were up front and the place was like a sweat shop, felt like 100 degrees, from all the people and the energy, we (my GF and I) were soaked in sweat and smashed up against the front barrier by the stage; Chi in between songs came over and handed us his Cran/Vodka and which we quickly sucked down like men in the desert, it was just a simple 'nice' gesture but what else would you except from tha guy? he always just came across as a very humble genuine person no doubt, you could just sense it on him... I am Christian and I dont know if Chi was or not but I pray he made his peace when he was here with us in limbo after his accident and now has moved on to a better place and maybe one day I can tell him face to face about our chance encounter and how much he affected us all down here, RIP my brother see you on the other side   :-\

I can't listen to any of their music or I'll start crying.

Chi has rejoined the universe from which he came. Normally my tears of joy when someone lived a long life and their time came, but I can barely handle this news right now. This is harder than I ever imaged. RIP to one of the most sincere and talented musicians I've ever met, and thank you for giving me the music that changed my life. That made me not hate myself when I did. That gave me new friends, that introduced me to the music industry. And mostly, thank you for simply changing lives for the better. Thank you.

While at Coachella, I mourned while laying on the ground with 75 thousand people, staring up into the sky, while the xx perform a somber set. It was oddly perfect.

I almost cut the night short instead so I could be by myself and try to understand the situation and my emotions, but I know Chi wouldn't want me to mope around. He'd want me, and all of us, to try and connect to the universe. To connect with the sound that brought us all together. It was a very important moment for me to say "no, I will not collapse"

I love you, Chi. I miss you. Thank you.

I disagree, personally. I never expected him to return to the band, I assumed if he ever made that much progress in his recovery, it'd be when the band were no longer making music. But I did have hope he could recover, even if not 100%. People do, it just takes time. Call me naive, but I never really thought it'd end with him passing away, simply because it'd been so long and he'd fought so hard all this time.

I definitely understand what you mean, though, about the news of his car accident feeling worse. I was actually wondering if the band would be able to heal and move on quicker this way, after being used to him being alive, but not hanging out and speaking with him for so long like they're used to. That's not to say they won't be completely devastated, but I guess just the nature of it, of someone being there but not being completely there as you're used to.

Same I didn't expect full recovery but I didn't expect him to die either, I think the band will be real twisted up and pissed off right now because they were upset seeing him like he was but they always thought he was going to get better eventually, now he's gone it's like all those years Chi had to suffer and all the stress his family went through was pointless given that he didn't even get to say a single word.

I always stood infront of Chi when I saw them live except back in 2006 when I got to the show a bit late and couldn't claim the spot and in 2007; I was in crutches so I couldn't do GA. In 2007 was the last time I saw Chi Cheng live in NYC.
He was always a delight to watch live. He played his bass and turned it around him effortless and with no mistake. He totally rocked. When he scream his lungs out during some songs, it was such a powerful scene. His presence onstage was definitely felt.

As a Deftones fan, I'll forver have Chi Cheng in my heart. Thank you for the great music and for the live shows I enjoyed watching you.
Rest in peace because you deserve it! We'll miss you but we'll never forget you!
One Love For Chi Cheng FOREVER!♥

I don't know but I think I know why you're asking that picture is of a fireplace next to a pool, cremators looks way different they're like sealed all sides and just have a door at one end and weird trays to collect the ashes.

Maybe I don't know what Buddhist do I'm just saying that's not a crematorium like people are saying.

According to the Theravada tradition, Buddhists cremate the body of the departed. However, in some Buddhist cultures burial is preferred if the parents of the diseased are still among the living. This is more of a cultural practice than one with any significant Buddhist meaning.

The cremation symbolizes a sense of detachment in that, the soul of the departed is set free from bondage. Buddhists believe that attachment towards the dead is detrimental to the progress of the soul in seeking a new life after death. Buddhists believe in Samsara (cycle of birth and death) until they reach salvation through Nirvana.

I Google Chi's name every now and again. It's hard to believe he's left the living. I'm glad he was a good, religious man. I'm sure he's at peace in the afterlife.

I'm listening to some of their live music from when Chi was still with them. Those screams were awesome. Say it ain't so. Rest in peace, Chi.

That's pretty cool , not like I knew any of them personally but I imagine of the Korn guys it would of been Head and Chi that got along the best, never met either of them but they seem to both have the same calm/kind disposition.

Chi on backup vocals (studio tracks only) ok, here's what i got

bored (80% sure he's on there a bit. anyone 100%?)
minus blindfold
nosebleed (90% sure he's on it)
engine no.9
damone
teething
needles & pins

he's possibly in "lifter" (backin up Chino at times with "more (morrrrrrrrrrreee)", & "i know (knowwwwwwwwwwww!)" sounds like it could be Chi's voice at times, but also could be Chino at times. both possibly. need help with this one

anyone have any more? (be for sure first & listen to the STUDIO version first before posting), & can anyone confirm bored & nosebleed for sure?  lifter?

Before the studio version of Bored came out the song was called "oraled, as far as I know the song was only played live and there exists no demo.
In oraled Chi makes the background-scream in the chorus.
In Bored I'm also for 80% sure he did (could be also chino), but you only hear it if you listen carefully.

I miss Chi. I was playing along to White Pony on bass the other day by the end off it my fingers were covered in blisters. I miss the intensity  Chi bought to all the music.
