The production is ridiculously good. It's definitely sounding like some SNW 2, but I would like to say : it's just one song. I'm not gonna put an image on the album with that one song. It's supposed to have been extra experimental. This song doesn't mean the album can't be heavy as fuck at times. Even moreso, put in context, the song could have a better impact.
I dig it. The music sinks in, the "jam" kind of vibe is enjoyable, and Chino's vocals, while they're reminiscent of the direction he took on DE and KNY, it's done slightly differently. It works better. The effects are better. Lyric wise... I guess it can be a wide debate. It's definitely more generic like DE and KNY, at least.

Wow, what a treat. I was just watching some old shows the other day thinking how much I missed Chi. I don't want draw too many conclusions by glimpsing at Eros through the lens of this one song, but I like it a lot. The raw production is great, even unmastered, and though it has a sound that foreshadows the coming of DE and KNY, it has a lot more of the old Deftones sound that I love so much. I had more goosebumps listening to this one track than pretty much the last two albums as whole pieces. That's not to say the other albums were bad, it's just how I physically reacted to the song; I suppose the surprise-factor of waking up to something like this could have contributed to my reaction. I've only listened to it once...trying to resist playing it out...just in case...this means...Eros...is being released.............*sigh*

I'm pretty sure that Chino just had a lot of the vocals to record at the time that they shelved this album so the vocals on this track may have all been done in the last two or three years which is well after the album was nearly done instrumentally.

since they've started recording a separate album I don't see Eros coming out as a whole for another couple years. but yeah this is pretty good, I see it as a contrast to Melanie.

I'm absolutely NOT saying that this means Eros is coming out, but vocals are the last thing Deftones work on with their writing process. Even if they are writing for their next release right now, Chino should be relatively free vocally for the first chunk of the writing. And because vocals are the only thing left unfinished on Eros, it's feasible for him to record a bit for Eros while the writing is going on for their KNY followup. But yeah, still not expecting a full release, at least not soon. Hoping, but not expecting.

I don't expect them to sell Eros. I suspect that we're going to get "leaks" like this from Chino.
I'm loving the drum slamming after "do you feel love" and the guitar tune. Also, the bridge reminds me a bit of Moana.
I love this the somber tone with the weird electronic beat and heavy drums is the sort of stuff I expected from Eros, this a really cool suprise just sucks it has to be for this occassion.

I mean, I would rather see the DE/KNY Chino coming up with lyrics and vocals like those, but then again at the time of the creation of the album, they were really optimistic and positive, so if it had been at the time, it would make sense too. Besides I think I'm spotting that grain in his voice that kind of faded afterwards.

The one thing we do know is that all the instrumentals were recorded and about half the vocals before Chi's accident. Whether any mixing was done or not, I don't know. I would assume so because recording was going on for about half a year

It's a really beatiful song, as some of you said, like the next step from SNW, like a perfect continuation on the way of the evolution of the band, and very emotive on how it was released.

I think it's great how this song was released, but I don't feel Chino should do it again. Just getting songs progressively without an official album would be kind of a mood killer for me.
The only reason I would support an actual album over releasing the songs over time is for the money to go towards the band or Chi's family. Also, official album art would be nice.

Wow, very different than I expected. I was expecting it to be heavy for some reason, I guess because Melanie was somewhat heavy and they said it was quite unorthodox. I know in all of Deftones' albums, they've never had an entirely-heavy or an entirely-soft album, there's always a mixture. I just suppose I felt like the majority of Eros would be heavy. Of course, this is only one song, and it is a beautiful song.
I think the song is great. It's not their best by a long shot, but great, and the difference between this and Diamond Eyes is massive. You can see the lyrics going more in the direction we've heard on Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan. Actually, they remind me a bit of Risk, for some reason. Even though we haven't heard Eros, I still think they've proven that no album of theirs sounds the same. That was a truly beautiful way to honour Chi on the anniversary of his passing, to allow fans of him and of Deftones to hear one of the songs on the last album he worked on.
As for the vocals, I did wonder if they were recently recorded or not, but I hear the quality in Chino's voice that was very prevalent on Saturday Night Wrist, and then a tiny bit on Diamond Eyes, but not on Koi No Yokan. So I think it's one of those songs that the vocals were already done.
Also, this is a good indicator that the band are in more of a mindset where they can release Eros. It might be a one-off, it might not be, but obviously they're not completely opposed to it, so this is a good sign.
I don't see why everyone is so surprised about the song being removed, it was obviously going to happen. I mean yeah it sucks, but when bands belong to a label, it's supposed to mean something. The artist doesn't have the publishing rights, that's why they sign with a label, right? So they can publish and promote it in an effective manner, and if they actually never do it, it doesn't give the artist any more right to publish, no matter if the bassist is dead.

Warner Bros owns the rights to all the Eros material, thereby Chino cannot just offer a song for free. To do with the music what he wants, he'd need to buy himself out of the contract with Warner Bros, and that would be very costly.

I was curious to this as well. I would think they would be close to being done with the deal. Hopefully WB would let them keep Eros so they could do what they want with it. I know when thrice was let out of their contract with a major the label let them keep alchemy index, but I think because it wasn't what the label wanted.

Personally, I think that at the time(and still is if you don't consider Chi's death and stuff), it's one of the happiest Deftones' songs ever made. The first time I listened to it I got this feeling of joy from it, and still it has this somber yet meaningful mood which is enough to make anyone...smile.

Wow. Just heard the song and I love it. I don't think we'll see Eros anytime soon, just a gift from Chino. Maybe he's working on some of it though.
It's really different than the other song for the guitar I think (except the break part that is really like Moana).
The high notes from the refrain, I don't remember a lot of part like that in other deftones songs.
The vocals and the lyrics or more particulary the feeling I have when I listen to it is the same when I listen to gift. For the positive way.

In general I don't think it's THAT much of a Terry vs. Nick -thing. There's a completely different person in a band and particulalry in bass which is as crucial element as guitar is to rock music. The vibe is most certainly a Chi vs. Sergio thing but the way all the elements are recorded and mixed is a Terry vs. Nick issue. To me the guitars and drums sound vastly different in the way they're recorded between Terry and Nick. Terry made the band sound huge and Nick makes them sound more etherial. That said, I absolutely hate the way Nick records drums.

I like the song quite a bit. It makes me really miss pre-Diamond Eyes Deftones even though parts sound a bit like the newer vocals. Some of the lyrics are really strange if they are from the time they wrote Eros, but I am leaning towards the vocals not being recent.
Whatever the case, and maybe I'm reading too much into this, but it makes me hopeful for a possibly near future Eros release. I know it's supposedly a tribute to Chi and very well it is in part, but Chino and co. also know how hyped this album is and I'm sure how much of a tease just one song would be. Plus more recent interviews making its release sound promising. I just think it's very possible that this random song is an indication/hint of a near future Eros release. Or maybe they just want to keep building the hype/mystery. Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy to have this one song from Eros, but obviously anyone wants the whole thing, and Deftones know it. Maybe like someone said, they will just keep occasionally releasing a song at a time.
I think it's a good song, it's still far more accessible and I suppose generic than white pony but I think it's an improvement on SNW and a bit darker than DE/ KNY.
I would rate this a smooth 8 out of 10

Yeah...maybe the vocals were done afterwards. I originally thought the song was done as a tribute, maybe to be a bonus track on Eros or a lone single. I don't know though, in interviews it didn't seem like Chino was willing to alter the material as it was when Chi's accident occurred. However, one of Eros' songs(Dallas) had a mid-tempo sound reminiscent of Minerva(according to wikipedia), and I personally think Smile fits that. Also, the lyrics also could have been about a stripper or something(according to many one of Eros' themes was sensuality). Iunno, its cool how Deftones' lyrics can be interpreted in different ways
I don't think it is post accident, Chino uses that kind of imagery alot in his songs just like how he uses waves and the ocean (Cherry Waves,Sextape) alot he also uses vehicles or being transportation (BQAD,Passenger,Rosemary) I think it's a bit of his nu-wave influences like Depeche Mode coming through so it's likely atleast one song on that record would use that imagery, I bet there's also one using the water imagery. Same thing for the theme of it Chino's lyrics often seem to be about death/loss and rebirth so I'm guessing atleast one of the songs on Eros would cover that, chances are it was why this song was choosen for the occasion.

Yeah they seem pretty set on keeping it as a snap shot of that time as they say, on a side note it's really cool as a fan to hear this because you can hear the SNW sound but with signs of what was to come with DE, personally i feel like the mix between the two is perfect on this song, the guitars aren't dumbed down like DE it's refreshing to hear a song where Steph isn't just using his 8 for powerchords and I like him and frank kind of takeover each over to add more aggression or slow it down again.Overall I love the dynamics some real cool tonal shifts happening in this stuff.
Remember that the vocals for Eros were only about halfway done at the time of Chi's accident. It's entirely possible that Chino's vocals for Smile are new.

I believe the lyrics were done aswell and Chino was just in the process of actually recording them, who knows though
It's very difficult to say but even if the voice is better than the two last records I still think there is a lot of similarities with DE and KNY vocal style

As a bass player, I personally play with my fingers. It does make a difference in sound. I only really use it if I literally cant play as fast as I need to, which isn't very often. So, there might've been a song that was too fast for him to play with his fingers on. But that's just my thoughts on it.
I play bass too and playing with fingers does makes a difference indeed, when you play with pick the sound has more attack and sharpness and with fingers its deeper and smoother.
Of course you can use EQ, compressors, etc to make one style sound like the other but IMO top bassist (or at least the one I look up to) play with fingers.

no way, just listening to melanie and smile they just sound like they're from a different time to everything released post eros, yes it's possible alot of riffs or whole songs could have been used from eros given that nobody has heard those songs to know but also there's no reason to believe they would even reuse the material, they're perfectly capable of just coming up with new stuff and they've had sufficient time to write the new stuff, we know they have the creative juices and chemistry to make new ideas i don't see why they would have choosen to use eros stuff, we're talking about a band that in their own words strives to capture that moment in time seems like they would rather part ways then recycle eros material as new stuff.

I've been listening to all of the available stuff that there is of eros material and I think that it will probably have a lot of music similar to like Beware, Change, Minerva, Untitled #4, Good Morning Beautiful etc. I mean I could be completely wrong, but that's just my take.

I have thought about that many times, only because, I have been in a lot of bands and even when I have left a band, the members have used different ideas and riffs we were coming up with for other stuff. All I'm saying is, any GOOD riffs that are just laying around will be used for other things. I highly doubt "Diamond Eyes" and "Koi No Yokan" are just Eros riffs re-worked, but I would say they probably used a few riffs from EROS here and there. I know this is older than Eros, but does anyone think they'll ever release a studio version of "Bumble D"? Even if they were to make a B-Sides & Rarities 2 Album or something. Even the live version of that song is so sick.
