Title: Deftones The Studio Collection
Post by: gwenudo on Apr 08, 2016, 08:04 AM
This collection came out of nowhere under the radar, nobody promoted it really. WHY!? I dont know, but its stupid that they didnt, because this is something we wanted.
The Studio Collection is every song in every album Remastered. The thing is though the iTunes version is different, way different. Its a lot more clear but not just that, it adds things we've never heard in the normal versions! The point to this thread is, i need your help finding every part thats new on there that you've never heard, for example like the man talking on Pink Maggit at the end. Also discuss what all you like about the iTunes version, because its fucking sick.

These are the changes that have been found so far.
Pink Maggit: at 5:51 a professor speaks to a class about the sound of a teenage girls heart
Passenger: at 5:18, Chino sings in a melodic tone unlike the normal version which is just instrumental.
Lotion: the last sceam in the end is slightly longer
Lhabia: at 2:21, another line is added of Chino murmuring words
Street Carp: Chino doesn't stop singing at the end, he continues saying "Write it down, now that you get it"
Root: at 3:10 where Chino yells "YEEEAAAAAA" is gone
Back to School: Chi is very loud and clear in this track
Headup: its the extended ending version
All tracks are basically a lot more clearer and Frank is a bit louder on most tracks, sadly not my favorite tracks.

Was it definitely released today, or has it been out a while and none of us noticed?

Just an FYI for everyone:
Its is mastered for itunes and thus not the highest possible quality. Goes for individual and the collection.

http://www.hdtracks.com/ (http://www.hdtracks.com/) has the highest quality FLAC 24bit/96khz and youll end up hearing even more things and sounds way better. It's more expensive and takes up more space but its worth it.

FLAC can be played on an iphone too with an app like VLC player.

Im listening through now and cross playing the tracks. The doctor part is all ive noticed right now.

Although that may be true, the hidden stuff wont be on those tracks, only iTunes has them.

That's weird. Then again, they barely manage to keep us in the loop about things anyway, haha. Well, I can't discuss this collection at the moment because I'm listening to Gore for the 20+ time, but let me know if you come across anything interesting!

I have, 2 interesting things, passenger on 5:18 has chino singing melodically to the end, and also the last scream on lotion is longer than normal.

Duuuuuude, that part on Passenger is awesome! They should've had this on the proper album, haha. This is weird, man, why aren't they talking about this?! OK, if someone meets them next time they're playing somewhere, ask them about this, because this is awesome and mysterious.

So far all the differences/additions have been towards the end of songs, so I guess listen to the last minute or so and see if there's more? But then again, could be anywhere, haha.

True, but the differences are all towards the end.

Oh, found one! Tiny one though. The ending of Lhabia (look, another ending!) fades out and doesn't have those noises that start at about 4:00 on the Around the Fur version. The Collection version just...fades.

Ahhh i see what you mean. The weird thing is, theyre both 4:11.. But yet the song on the normal one ends at like 3:40 but the newer one ends at 4... Wtf.. I dont get it. We need to put these tracks side by side and see why

Me too. Man, all these changes so far have been awesome, I don't understand why we're getting them and why the band hasn't acknowledge it, but I'm enjoying. They are all towards the end of the songs so far though.

I doubt it, I get the feeling all this cool stuff was for the first few albums. Like how they used to perform demo songs live, they don't do that anymore, haha.

I almost wonder if this was supposed to be their "big announcement" on the radio the other day? They got high and forgot to promote it. No but really, seems like something they'd announce on that show instead of the few new song premiere thing.

I wouldnt say remixed completely, some songs are remixed but all songs are remastered, the clarity is real. You can hear the differences even through a speaker phone. I wouldnt know how to explain it. But yes its pretty much all tracks, even koi

Holy shit the song Diamond Eyes.  Check those verses.  How much clearer.
I could finally hear Franks synths!

So the albums are remixed completely?
I wouldnt say remixed completely, some songs are remixed but all songs are remastered, the clarity is real. You can hear the differences even through a speaker phone. I wouldnt know how to explain it. But yes its pretty much all tracks, even koi

Is this the same quality for the collection that's now appearing on Spotify?
No its not. We had users say its different. iTunes version is clearer and has hidden features.

Any knowledge about a vinyl or proper CD release of this or is it just download?

Just an FYI for everyone:
Its is mastered for itunes and thus not the highest possible quality. Goes for individual and the collection.

http://www.hdtracks.com/ (http://www.hdtracks.com/) has the highest quality FLAC 24bit/96khz and youll end up hearing even more things and sounds way better. It's more expensive and takes up more space but its worth it.

FLAC can be played on an iphone too with an app like VLC player.
Although that may be true, the hidden stuff wont be on those tracks, only iTunes has them.

They are. Im listening to them now? The ending part to pink maggit is on there.
PLEASE TELL ME THIS IS TRUE
It is I swear. Just note that I bought the remastered albums individual. Sounds seriously incredible.
Wonder if theres a difference between the whole collection and individually

Both 24 bits (remastered, not real). Individually are 96 khz, the collection is 44khz
What do you mean by "remastered, not real"?

yeah, like GORE on qobuz. It's a 16bits flac, remastered for 24 bits, not real 24 bits. Maybe is a little difference, but it is.
I'm still checking this thing

I havnt been able to dissect everything due to life, but heres everything i got so far.

Pink Maggit: Professor speaking at the end
Passenger: added vocals on the last part at 5:18
BQAD: can hear backup vocals way clearer, especially at the end where he just repeats himself saying "i dont care where just far" you can hear him singing "awwwwaaaaayyyyyy" way better.
Root: vocals have been removed on the breakdown where he yells "YYYEEEEAAAAAA"
Headup: the last part where its all instrumental got creepy as hell, you can hear what sounds like chino moaning and stuff which you can hear on normal version already but its way more enhanced.
Overall everything is way enhanced. I can hear everything way clearer now, except for my two favorite frank songs hexagram and WGTB
Also ATF album has alot more bass, you can almost hear Chi banging his bass infront of you.

Unfortunately not as high as i want it to be, you can hear it more than usual, but i like franks chorus to be the loudest thing on that song, sometimes i want to shut chino up just so i can hear it better. But no sorry man, its better, but not as good as i want it to be

Here's some information on why the iTunes version may be better. http://www.apple.com/itunes/mastered-for-itunes/ (http://www.apple.com/itunes/mastered-for-itunes/)
This is a music engineer trying to explain "Mastered for iTunes" songs. basically its FLAC quality but smaller size.. hard to explain, but take a read if youd like

White Pony is the best fucking record there is. That extra line on Passenger is a beautiful detail. By the way, the way he drunkenly did it in Roskilde in 2001 is pretty much the same, so it wasn't improvisation after all (5:20) :

- Street Carp has Chino singing "Write it down, now that you get it" until the end, as opposed to the record where he cuts it short before.
- Passenger has Chino singing "Drive faster" in a longer, more melodic way on the last hook, as opposed to the record where it's fully instrumental.
- Pink Maggit has a bit of monologue on the outro.
- Stef is louder on RX Queen.

Haven't listened to anything else off the collection yet.

What about the end of BQAD ? Less fade in the end like Street Carp ?

Lhabia has an extra "Look at what it's doing to you" part on the breakdown, you hear four times instead of three. Like on the unmixed version. I'm gonna listen to the whole record and update.

Just finishing Lhabia, and it fades out earlier and finishes earlier. You only hear one of Stef's noises in the feed as opposed to a couple of times on the record.

Currently listening to Adrenaline and it's sounding a lot brighter and clearer. Frank's effects are louder on Fireal. "Save you from" is more prominent. Some vocals in a few songs stand out more than they did. Pretty interesting finding all these little changes.

This was definitely not released until today. I have checked iTunes every day for the past couple months and it was not on there. I downloaded the iTunes version. Really stoked to compare it against the flac studio albums I have.

Also, "Covers" album was not available on iTunes until today. Downloaded that also in case the quality was bit better than the rip I had.

I'm onto the self-titled, Minerva right now. Apart from a gain in Frank's effects, cleaner vocals and crunchier guitars, just overall a different mix, well nothing so far. Haven't heard ATF after BQAD yet. Mascara has Stef's guitar squeaking out at the very end. The back vocals on the bridge of Around the Fur sounded more prominent to me.

Overall, does this new series justify buying all the albums again, or is it just a fun way to re-discover the music? I haven't listened to anything yet and I wonder if it's interesting to someone who already has the CDs.
Title: Re: Deftones The Studio Collection
Post by: Vesanic on Apr 08, 2016, 09:48 PM
Well, this is really a tough debate. I was about to say it's just a fun way to discover the music again, but I'm listening to Good Morning Beautiful right now. Bear in mind I've heard it so many times it's ridiculous. And I'm only hearing NOW Abe's weird ass fills on the second verse. They are on the original, but the rhythm is so much more audible you think you're hearing some Zach Hill shit for a second.

If you're a fan, I don't think you'd regret this. Proves that Apple are still working their evil magic like bosses but hey, sounds like quality to me.

In all honesty, ive never these songs like this.. Its the small things that im absolutely loving, the clarity, the Frank noises and synths, the added material and the overall better performance. If youre not a sound junkie then you should probably save your bucks, but to those who are, its almost a must IMO. And to those who arent big on sound, i promise, even you will find these better changes.. This is just my opinion.

So much more Chi in the mix on many of these songs. I love it. Everything that's been buried for years is suddenly at the forefront. I kind of prefer the old ending of Passenger though without Chino's part.

Buying this was completely worth it to me. I'm not an audiophile at all, I'm basically the opposite. I can't notice anything like that at all, when you guys talk about certain instruments in the mix, different productions, etc., I'm lost. But even I can hear the differences with this collection, so many cool things that were drowned out, or almost drowned out, on the albums. Or just things sounding more prominent. It's really awesome even for someone like me, so for people who are big into production and how certain things sound, it must be huge. I just don't get why the band hasn't said anything.

It's just hard listening to this while trying to obsessively listen to Gore, haha.

Haven't even finished Hole in the earth yet and although I don't really like the vocals they took out of the song, the improvement in sound quality is going to make me enjoy this album 1000x more than I already do.

Ok so just bought it last night but I don't understand how this works? Apple does the remastering themselves? How are we now hearing parts that we had never heard before.. I don't get it.. Shit is sick tho.

I read up on what exactly is "Remastered for iTunes" and apparently, the producers have to come to iTunes and say hey i want to put this out there, so they send them the lossless files of what they want and add some apple magic that can make it into a 256kbps track but loose little to no quality. Idk how thats possible, but apples coding is special, therefore they say its remastered for iTunes. And it appears reprise mustve approached iTunes and said hey we want this and that. iTunes doesnt go to them, producers go to them. So if we want to thank anybody, lets thank reprise for taking them time to do this. Mustve taken a long time. Hate to see it not getting any support though

And yet no mention of it from anyone :\ weird. Also the additions and changes to the songs. Weird as hell.

I can't hear a single bit of difference on KNY yet. Every other album I can easily. You sure it's not a placebo effect on you? If anyone has Covers from iTunes and wouldn't mind sending over a song to compare with to confirm, that'd be great. This whole thing is so awesome.. Combat pops more now too. It does the guitars justice when it kicks in right after the intro. SNW is so insanely underappreciated at times.

Self titled seems to have a little bit more hiss left in the mix in general (for example beginning of Battle-Axe). The volume difference between Minerva and Good Morning Beautiful is annoying me a little, sounds like they tried to push the guitars on Minerva a little more or something. Can't hear this volume difference on the original CD but most won't care or notice. Heard a little studio sound in the beginning of "Fist" I never noticed before. About the Around the Fur changes, someone was selling a cassette tape of the unmixed Around the Fur years ago but the price was way too high, it's possibly circulating out there offline so some of these changes may not be new to anyone that has a copy of it.

Title: Re: Deftones The Studio Collection
Post by: Vesanic on Apr 09, 2016, 07:26 AM
Not much difference on the rest of the S/T I think.

Onto SNW. Hole in the Earth has this edit, the "I hate all my friends" part comes after two extra "There's a hole in the earth", to make it sound less immediate. And the second "I hate all my friends" is scrapped out.

Frank's definitely more crisp on Rapture. His final note is metal stick in the eardrum.

The guitars in the ending of Beware sound different, Chino's much more audible. I'm not too fan of this specific edit to be honest, the fact Chino is more in the background on the original gives you this curious feeling of wondering what the fuck is actually happening, working that contrast with the dreary rhythm of that heavy section, I think it works better, I don't feel that chaotic vibe so much on this edit.

Mein still sucks.

1) i cant the audio file out of iTunes due to DRM, maybe Ves can with his crafty tools

2) probably not, i listened to them both, both sound amazingly alike, IMO

Edit: you can however probably go a page back or two and youll see Ves posted a live video of chino playing passenger live with maynard and chino sings the last part just like the audio file we have

Is the 16/44 2016 studio collection identical to the Itunes and 24/96 versions that were just released ?
Allegedly, Headup 16/44 is the extended version, whereas the 24/96 version is only 5:13.
Root 16/44 has the scream, but the 24/96 doesn't.
Pink Maggit 16/44 doesn't have the doctor, but the 24/96 does.

Can anyone confirm there are differences indeed ?

Theyre not identicle. iTunes has an exclusive version of the collection that can only heard through them or from what i hear, HDtracks as well. All others wont be the same, it anything, those are just the regular tracks but with a different EQ IMO

iTunes and HDTracks 24/96 should both be the same as far as differences. I understand that the "other ones" are the same old retail versions.

So just wanted to clarify that the deftones discography in FLAC 24-bit – 96.00 kHz are the same as the itunes remasters ?
They already did.

Depends where you getting them from? I believe HDtracks one is legit, but the other websites are fake apparently, heard theyre the same as originals

Wow. I'm listing to the HDtracks version and I love the variations on the tracks, the sound is amazing. As everyone else has said, why didn't the band promote this. Its great.

More importantly, does HDtracks actually provide a loseless copy of the remastered collection or does it have the same compression rate as iTunes? /is it a scam like the so-called 24-bit albums on Qobuz?

They're all DR 5, wich is really shitty. Eventhough they sound good. The best deftones sound ive heard. Ive never heard the vinyls on a competent setup.

I see a FLAC version on the torrents website. Would love to buy it through itunes but itunes india have removed all the songs with any explicit lyrics so doesn't make sense :/

it would've been nice if they could've put that digital bath intro they used to play back in the day. i always loved how it set the mood for the song.

either way is this "Rippable" that being said is there any chance of anyone ripping this  for the community?

I just listened to the HD tracks ATF version, it almost have the same differences that the ATF mixes cassette has. Also, in lhabia, the kick pattern at the end of the song is different than the original.

Cool to see this things see the light though :)

Thanks for the clarification.
So, if I understand, iTunes has many differences, HDTracks has a few differences, and the other ones are pretty much the regular tracks with a different EQ ?
iTunes and HDTracks 24/96 should both be the same as far as differences. I understand that the "other ones" are the same old retail versions.
What I don't understand is that the 16/44 Headup is the extended version, and the 24/96 is the 5:13 version.
I think I've read on this forum that the iTunes Headup was the extended version.

I don't think this is it. It doesn't include any of the changes mentioned before, such as the changes on Passenger, Chino not yelling "YEAH" on Root, etc. It's definitely the actual songs from the normal albums but I don't think it's the new "Remastered for iTunes" one with the new tweaks.
I'm definitely buying it in a few days anyways, but I just wanted to hear it now haha

I downloaded this the other night and was going through this thread and didn't hear any changes that people talked about, I thought either I had supersonic hearing or maybe this wasn't the right one, although it does sound a little better than my CD rips I've been using for years.
