I get you though, I keep voting LMIRL and i know its a favourite of many. Would have been a great closer for the album IMO. I just don't get with the janes addiction vibe of it. I'm just being picky really ;)

I dig phantom bride though.

I like all of these songs in the running now so its a tough choice, but I went with Rubicon. I think it is the most generic sounding song out of the bunch for me. Also the lyrics on Rubicon don't really hit home for me. Although its a great song I am really not surprised with the amount of praise for the song. I guess different strokes for different folks. I couldn't believe when people told me they didn't like Entombed on Koi b/c I absolutely loved it.

the songwriting's pretty great on pb though, i think,.it all unfolds and feels so natural. great melodies by chino too, never does it go the "wrong way"for me. if people don't like the vibe and sound of it, i get that. (but i dig it.) i can understand cheesy, lame, dad rock etc though. generic rock band sounding, is rubicon for me. love the song, the only minor gripe i have with it is that it sometimes does sound like deftones and sometimes it doesn't.on the border constantly and i'm annoyd that it's so uncertain of what it really is as a song. great closer feel to it tough

Complex question.
S/T was the biggest disappointment for me, besides Gore. But there are songs that are very important to me.

Hexagram strikes a chord with me.
Makes me want to go overseas and fuck shit up, with zero regard for my life.

Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event will be played as the first dance song with my wife at my wedding. Because it's ironic and filled with emotion, which is double irony. BTW, I have been with her since 1999. Neither of us has cheated, or left, ever. I absolutely do not deserve her, she is far, far out of my league.

Acid Hologram wouldn't fit on S/T because Acid Hologram sounds like they actually put some effort into writing the song. If they had written that song during the S/T era, it would've had 2 1/2 riffs to it max.

My vote is for Phantom Bride. I like it, but Cantrell has had so many better solos. Honestly, I prefer Chuck's Instagram clip...lol. (L)MIRL is a much more progressive, better-structured song, IMO. I love the changes in it.

cantrell's solo is nothing special in itself, that was just hype i think. reviews spoke highly of it, that it stuck out, was the highlight of the song etc. I disagree, it's like the song pauses there for a while, like a small intermission. looking at the whole picture - it's nice that it's there, but the solo is absolutely nothing that steals the show by anymeans. just a little cogwheel in the machinery. the part where it blends with stephens stuff is awesome though

i agree, it's a good solo, but the song stands on it's own regardless(it doesn't steal the show). i think Jerry made it in Stephen's skill set for sure(but Stef will refuse to play it anyway). but, i'm suprised, i consider the begining to hearts/wires more of a solo than even goon squad (h/w a guitar solo for sure i'm gonna say. "dallas" from eros he solos without it even being a question). so, really there's 1 from Stephen there, and 1 from Jerry on phantom. i kinda prefer the hearts/wires solo

and that technical riff in pittura is like a cky riff. freakin nice

I wasn't suggesting he's not allowed to. I'm saying there's something weird about criticising someone for exaggeration when you're labelling a chorus like (L)MIRL as 'atrocious'.

There's nothing wrong with not liking it, I just can't fathom why someone would describe it quite like that.

Yeah, I get why you don't like it. It develops in quite a weird way, that song; like it promises one tone/idea, then shifts along and does the same with the next part. I personally really like it but, like most of the album, it almost feels like there's a concerted effort to avoid any kind of immediate atmospheric/emotional peak.

That's pretty much why the whole album works for me. You have to really soak in it but to me it feels like there's a lot of unstated depth and there's something about that that makes it a great record.

the chorus to lmirl possibly talking about sailing out & blowin your brains out off the side of the boat falling in the water? (so i put this gun to my head) first sailing, then slipping into the waves, then deep into the waves

fits most of the dark themes on the album. that's my take on it anyway
Title: Re: Gore Elimination (round 7)
Post by: Vesanic on Apr 26, 2016, 05:19 PM
That's why I think this is taken out of proportion. You're pretty much recognizing it because it's not immediate and there's no real peak. You enjoy the "subtlety" in it. I get it. And probably, you think I don't like it because it doesn't stack a shit ton of layers with Chino screaming his head off. Which is a mistake, should you know.

Well, I think this subtlety is exaggerated. The way the song goes, it's probably these "left turns" Chino kept mentioning about the record. I love when a band I like experiments. But here, to me, it sounds as though they took left turns just... for the sake of taking left turns and say "Hey, listen, we don't sound like we usually do, right? Ain't that cool? We do fine art don't we".

I'm convinced that if another band had released this song, you wouldn't support it so much.

Don't see any disdain in this comment.

I certainly wasn't thinking that the reason you dislike it is because "it doesn't stack a shit ton of layers with Chino screaming his head off". I totally understood why you dislike it, which is precisely why I referred to the way it starts with one idea and then shifts onto the next before doing the same thing with that. In other words, I was well aware that the reason you're not keen on that song was because you don't like the multiple left turns. I never made any direct criticism on that point. The only thing I criticised was your description of the chorus as 'atrocious', which you then admitted was over the top. I haven't tried to argue that you should like it.

Yeah, (L)MIRL. This chorus is atrocious.

I don't like the chorus, but the rest of the song more than makes up for it. The chorus sounds too happy. I used to think all of it except the beginning sounded happy, but it doesn't. It does sound very dark and hopeless, but the damn chorus keeps coming in and interrupting that mood throughout the rest of the song.

Acid is one of the best, if not the best, song on the record.
