Title: SOCIAL MEDIA vs. FORUMS
Post by: lostpilot on Nov 29, 2016, 11:26 PM
Hey guys,

So it's not a secret that social media has pretty much destroyed the forum communities. Just like in Sharing Lungs, I am still visiting some of the older message boards and forums, and they are with greatly diminished users, usually just same group of people that are on the forum for 5+ years. So now that got me thinking, is there anything in the social media that can really replace the same value/mechanism that message boards and forums provided?

It seems like there were stronger bonds, overall more involvement and personal interaction within forums. I have made great friends via internet through the message boards, some among you, but I just don't see that happening now via YouTube comment or Instagram likes/follows.

HOW DID WE GET HERE?
WHERE ARE WE GOING?

Discuss.

Reddit has become the walmart of online communities, i guess.

Why bother going here, when every thing you'd ever need is over there?

If it wasn't for the fact that i "know" some of the personas who are still on sharinglungs, and i enjoy reading what you have to say about shit we have in common, i'd be gone too.

Same here... And old habits die hard too I guess ?
I also think that forums were much nicer, and made a much "close-knitted" community, I enjoyed many many deftones shows with meet ups with people from the board, which was fucking amazing, particulary as I tend to go to shows alone (none of my friends share my tastes !!).
I don't have this feeling of "community" at all with social media (full disclaimer, I don't really use social media any more, I find it boring and full of fake, annoying, clickbaity crap shit).

The fact that the Deftones reddit is so full of dumbasses is proof enough that forums are worth it.

I miss those days, for real, FB is crap, gossip and viral shit I don't care, but I still have it just because some specific stuff and purpose.
Also I enjoyed more twitter but lately, as Tarkil said, it's becoming a "boring and full of fake, annoying, clickbaity crap shit".
Also have Instagram, but it's like an extension of my twitter, for the photos and following some bands/interesting people.

But, nothing of that is compared to the forums, and that's why I keep coming here to discuss interesting stuff, and not only talk shit about anything like on deftones familia for example  ::)

I was happy when it was told that FB and TW were being closed a few years ago, but what a shame it didn't happen.

Interesting point.
I think people noticed a decline on the board for years now. A lot of nice people left. Luckily some stayed too, or returned.
Social media...it could be so cool, such a cool way to stay in touch....but unfortunately there's way, way to much crap on there, too much bullshit, clickbait, hatred and self-centered  pricks.

Perhaps it has to do with age too? I'm 34, for me, internet was new, message boards were new...and I jumped at the opportunity of engaging with people all over the world. Man, I was excited when I used ICQ and chatted with people.
I have heard from people about five years younger than me, that all the connectivity and the endless stream of media was overwhelming and they started blocking stuff.
Maybe people even younger simply don't care; too much, fuck it?
Just a thought.

I agree with this, i'm 29 and kinda felt the way you said it, naming an example, going to concerts and flooding youtube and such social media sites with footage (often really bad footage) and almost causing the tapers to disappear because many people (most of them younger people) lost interest and are able to find the video from last night @ the tube or even post his own takes.
Maybe yes, they (younger people) are used to a fast living style and that's why they don't care. Most people don't even read posts on FB containing only text, they're just there for the images/videos and sharing viral media over the internet. A big contrast to the forums, where there's a lot of writing/reading.

28 here, and Martin's point is so universal.. I grew up outside rather than with my face stuck on iPhone's screen all of the time, and the internet provided me with MAGIC. Imagine my mind being blown when I would be able to find rare songs by bands, even on this forum. I remember a time when I did not have a PC or internet and I would visit the local library cause they gave ONE HOUR OF INTERNET PER MONTH with the library card. BEST HOUR EVER.

All spent on forums, downloading jpegs of album covers to a floppy drive.

Also, I think my music projects were only possible because of this board, because some of the guys here helped me out/encouraged me/kept me going. It's a treasure, and I am pretty disappointed to see it dwindle.
