Title: Porcupine Tree
Post by: Azwethinkweiz on Mar 13, 2006, 05:46 PM
Who else listens to this wonderful and amazing band? They're like the Pink Floyd of our generation with a metal edge to them.
If you havent heard them then listen to this amazing song called Trains.

I prefer Deadwing over In Absentia and haven't heard other stuff that often (even though I have two other albums in my comp). I don't find much so awesome parts but they're always a good band to listen to. Really liking them but probably never reach the top ten.

And I don't know about the "pink floyd of our generation" thing. Even though a lot of PF fans apparently like them I don't see much resemblance. And they're almost next to PF in my playlist...

Fear of a Blank Planet
01-06-2007

Roadrunner Records and Atlantic USA have officially announced the release of the new Porcupine Tree album "Fear of a Blank Planet" in mid April. The album features six (mostly lengthy) tracks, and is the band's most ambitious and cohesive work to date. Much of it was debuted last year on tour to a rapturous response from fans.

The lyrical content of the song-cycle on the album is a 21st century cocktail of MTV, sex, prescription drugs, video games, the internet, terminal boredom, and subsequent escape.

I already have my ticket to see them live in Nottingham in April. They're an amazing band from what I've heard but I need to listen to more of their stuff.

Fuck you for having that ticket yo. I wish i was swimming in cash. Hopefully they won't quit in the next few years. Btw have any of you heard the futile ep. It's amazing.

Lightbulb Sun is also really good if you ever get a chance to listen to it. If you like DeadWing & In Absentia, its less metal but still has that Pink Floyd/Crosby Stills & Nash feel to it.

Deadwing is my favorite album, bar none.  I have On the Sunday of Life, Lightbulb Sun, In Absentia, Deadwing, and Stars Die: The Delerium Years (a comp).  The more I listen to them the more I like them.  Good shit.

Best av ever.

I saw Porcupine Tree when they toured with Opeth after Opeth released Damnation. They were pretty fucking good live, but I found their albums quite boring.

Been listening to In Absentia a lot recently. Great album I must say. Trains, Sound of Muzak and Gravity Eyelids ftw!

I want to buy the record though. So I might go to Amazon and order it!

I also heard that an album of theirs called "Lightbulb Sun" has been re-packaged, and remastered in 5.1 surround sound. This album any good?

I also downloaded Stupid Dream, but not the remastered version. Good album too, but In Absentia is miles better.

These dudes are gonna release a new live DVD most likely in April and a new album in September. This band is just pure awesomeness = )! And they also might remaster and rerelease the out of print album "Recordings". So 2008 looks like another great year for PT and PT fans.

Been listening a lot of Fear of a Blank Planet lately. It is pure gold. Fuck anyone who disagrees. Anesthetize is a hell of a song.

QuoteThe Incident is a stunning 55-minute musical statement, described by vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Steven Wilson as "a slightly surreal song cycle about beginnings and endings and the sense that 'after this, things will never be the same again.'"  The seeds of the idea that led to The Incident came to Wilson as he became caught up in a highway traffic jam while driving past an accident.

"There was a sign saying 'POLICE – INCIDENT' and everyone was slowing down to rubber neck to see what had happened," he recalls. "Afterwards, it struck me that 'incident' is a very detached word for something so destructive and traumatic for the people involved. And then I had the sensation that the spirit of someone that had died in the accident entered into my car and was sitting next to me.

"The irony of such a cold expression for such seismic events appealed to me, and I began to pick out other 'incidents' reported in the media and news," continues Wilson. "I wrote about the evacuation of teenage girls from a religious cult in Texas, a family terrorizing its neighbors, a body found floating in a river by some people on a fishing trip, and more. Each song is written in the first person and tries to humanize the detached media reportage."

Additionally, Wilson delved back into incidents in his own life that had profoundly affected him, including a lost childhood friendship, a séance, his first love and the day that he decided to give up secure employment to follow his dream of making music.

The self-produced album is completed by four standalone compositions that developed out of band writing sessions last December – "Flicker,"  "Bonnie The Cat," "Black Dahlia" and "Remember Me Lover" – housed on a separate CD to stress their independence from the title track.

Porcupine Tree – completed by Gavin Harrison (drums), Colin Edwin (bass), and Richard Barbieri (keyboards) – took a video camera into the recording studio, capturing a few moments to share with fans. Explore the behind-the-scenes footage here.

Coming to the recording sessions following his first ever solo album, November 2008's Insurgentes, Wilson admits that the experience of having worked alone affected the direction of The Incident. "Possibly because of having done that, this record is darker, expansive, and more experimental," he theorizes. "But when I write for Porcupine Tree, I know the sound I'm after."

In Absentia, Deadwing, & FOABP are their best IMO

Title: Re: Porcupine Tree

Love 'em. I actually view them similarly to Deftones: they're not my absolute favorite, and none of their records would make my top 5 of all time, but they were remarkably consistent with great material for a long stretch.

Stupid Dream, Lightbulb Sun, In Absentia, and Deadwing were all stellar efforts. To me, they started slipping with FoaBP, and that continued with The Incident. Both have skippable tracks and are more "B" efforts. The biggest problem is that Steven Wilson's lyrics have gone to complete shit, to the point where I'm embarrassed for anyone to hear me listening to songs like FoaBP, Way out of Here, Time Flies, etc. I also wonder if he started stretching himself too thin between Blackfield and his solo records.

I do kind of like the electronic direction they took with "Sleep Together," "The Incident," and "The Blind House" and hope to see more of that if they make another record.

Yeah, such a great opener and then to top it off, it's followed by Trains.

In case you weren't aware, Steven Wilson released a new album recently. I didn't like it that much, but this track is really good.

Yeah I quite like his solo stuff. This album is probably my least favorite from his solo work but I think it holds up very well with everything else he has done.

It scares though because I think Porcupine Tree is going to turn into a side project and be left in the dust. Every time someone asks Steven whats going on with PT, he doesn't look too excited.

It's official. PT are another band on an "indefinite hiatus".

I think Grace For Drowning and Insurgentes are two of the best albums he has done (Fear of a Blank Planet being the third in my top3), so I'm really not that bothered IF he decides to only make solo albums from now on.

However, the 70's thing is getting pretty stale. Raven is great, but I don't like it as much as GfD. If the next one is in the same style, I'll be even less excited. (Though it will probably be good)
