---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We need to take initiative here by doing *these things
1) Get email addresses from respective record label heads of interest in the situation
2) Registering an online petition and spread the word to all known online deftones communities
3) Converting the trailer into myspace videos and youtube videos and indicate in description of the video just what we know about the movie and that we have a petition, and provide the link to the petition
4) Share the video and petition link via bulletins and deftones myspace comments and whatever other means possible
5) Send the record label a constant flow of emails with a standard formal argrument for the film and its significance.
6) Inform the record label of the petition at an appropriate time when the number of signatures has reached high enough
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
that's the best solution i can think of.
to see examples of how petitioning things like this work check out
http://www.geocities.com/fwwmfight/ <-- their trying to get deleted scenes to a movie
and
http://www.petitiononline.com/Arrested/petition.html <---- probably the most notorious and effective petitioning i've seen for entertainment. arguably, the campaign to petition and support the show arrested development is what got them on air for their third season
i am going to get ready for work and so as of yet i have no time to look into further details but if we all pull together we can have a substantial game plan. in fact, if anyone here is tight with nuno then i think he should be notified a.s.a.p. to see what he can do. alright, this will be wicked. peace.
maverick are such pussies. too dark. pffft. they don't even realise a great dvd would help the band sell more albums. good luck trying to get those sissies to release that dvd. but i'm all for trying anyway
i think that looks awesome, but i got better things to do right now. I'll work on some of that tonight. or Monday.

i was under the impression that it was WP only, but if not even better.
i hope some of 2005 was covered, i wanna see the drama?
anyone know anything about this?
Haha, then what makes you think this guy will send it to you? :D

http://www.directedbyandrewbennett.com/LIVE.htm
There are some spectacular live performances of Minerva and Korea here. Some of the best live quality I've seen. So based on the Minerva, I'd say this movie could be part of the S/T era too. Quality is awesome.
After I'd briefly read this topic last night before going to bed, I had a moment in my dream where I picked up some Deftones DVD in some purple furry box that had like a 3D version of the knife party poster inside it (you know the one where theyre sitting in a line against the wall). Their legs were kind of coming out of the picture. I dunno, it's hard to explain but it was pretty weird.
Quote from: DefUnNorma428 on Apr 08, 2006, 08:28 AM
thanks for giving me credit for posting this in the first place...but anyone couldda emailed him...and he said that if i wanted a copy of the movie since its done hed send it to me...i sent him my adress...i doubt ill get it....but o well well see...and im not kidding u when i say this either...if i get it...depending on how well the petition goes...im not uploading it...cuz the goal is to get this movie into the light of day and and not fuck it up by downloaders getting from me...then having it leak all over the internet then having the ppl at maverick change their minds back to not letting it come out like the team sleep unmastered bullshit
np. and you make a good point. i don't understand record labels at all. it almost seems like the outcome of a project in such an industry is based on what the biggest smart ass in a suit has to say about it. hopefully the petition will have a stronger point to make about the band than the executives who doubt them.
i think there's even Waldrock footage in there. Check the last seconds of that trailer and watch chino falling down from a 3 meter high roof.
What's Waldrock?
Chino got really drunk at that show and said some straight up hilarious shit. I can upload some stuff from it if you want.
Well I uploaded the intro and Headup from it anyway, for whoever wants to listen.

Signed a few hours ago.
Conceptualized/Filmed in 2000 (possibly some in '01), but obviously it's been added to. The 2003 footage (in the trailer at least) is from May 20th at The Crest here in Sacto, the same show that Minerva clip is from. I'm pretty sure it's supposed to mainly be a tour documentary. If you look in the old news there's a thing about a tour documentary from that time.
Good petition, hope it grows.
Seacrest out.
|| Deftones Home Video
22/12/2000
Here's Mike Donk's Home Video subject:
"Well lots of you have been wondering why the shows were being taped... i just got permission to finally share the info with ya.
Its for a Deftones documentary home video that should be released some time in mid 2001.
The director has about 60 hours of footage from the "back to school" tour + about 15 hours of stuff that I taped over the years. well of course all that footage needs to be cut down to 90 minutes... so the director wanted me to get some input from fans - and that's you so
Do you want lots of backstage + tour bus type stuff? like them talking before and after they did the Conan O'Brian show. Do you want 60 second clips of lots of different songs or do you want less songs but have them be the whole song. what songs do you want to see live - old, new some of both? what types of things would you like to see them discuss in interviews. do you want lots of fan footage - like fans talking about the band? blah blah... you get the idea. when i had the poll for your favorite wp song - the highest percentage of people said "digital bath" + we all know what the new single is... so post your opinion on this!"
stuff before shows like conan o brien and full songs. songs that really stand out. in quality and everything

Conan O'Brien? When did they do the Conan O'Brien show?!

That's just what I was thinking. And I want to see NO fan footage.
yea.. i agree. no fan footage.. thats just stupid and wasting good time on a 90min. fil. I think what they should do is make it mostly interviews and footage of them chillin before the concert, then show about 4 or 5 songs live.. then more chillin stuff after the show. ive seen them play songs before.. i wanna see some stuff backstage and footage of them hanging out and stuff. that'd be good.
I'm telling you, they need to release a 2 dvd 1 cd set. first dvd is live footage (roxy show, and something from 04) and the second dvd is rare videos, tour footage, etc etc. the cd would be bsides and rarities part 2 with actually rare stuff.

to be honest i dont kno if it would be good to put any live videos on there...unless they are like their first show...or waldrock VIDEO because u can, and most of us, have enough bootlegs of deftones that weve seen every song they have live...so it would be a waste to put it in a movie about the band itself...i think it should be just interviews...and personal shit
they should just make a dvd like weezer's video capture device; that dvd is like an orgasm to any weezer fan.
It'd be cool if they just whipped up some of the bootlegs they already have to dvd quality and sound, and fuck putting it in the mainstream keep it on the streets just make the bootlegs we already have better and that be cool.

as far as fuck the mainstream goes...as long as i could see the finished product i wouldnt care...but if the band and the director both want it out for EVERYONE then so be it and we should help them....if maverick still after all this shit refuses then hopefully andrew bennet would send it to me as hes already asked for my adress...but even if he were to send it to me tomorrow...which i doubt he will do at all...i wouldnt upload it untill we were 100% sure if it was coming out or not....somewhat repeated myself but whatever

About the dvd, i really want some bus and backstage stuff. It would be cool to see how they spend their time like 'normal' persons. Fan footage?! Its cool, but, please..

I agree with skinnypuppy. But, i dont know why, i think they'll make another rare record, like b-sides. They left too much stuff out of it.
Bus footage
Backstage footage
Funny stuff like Stef cutting Chinos guitars strings..

In the exclusive interview conducted by UG, Deftones' guitarist Stephen Carpenter minutely discussed the band's latest "B-Sides And Rarities" album
UG:
Most of your fans have been disappointed you didn't put Depeche Mode's "To Have And To Hold" on the record. Why you didn't and how did you choose the songs and video material for "B-sides & Rarities"? What was the main criteria?
Steff:
No specific reason for that track to not make it. As for there being any criteria for what made it, I think it was just a matter of time and place. There will be more to come in the future, can't put it all in one package, it's to much!

ok guys i got 2 new messages from andrew bennet....he has given me his phone number and wants to speak with me..he seems like he REALLY wants to speak with me but has asked me not to post any of the messages he has sent to me which is the reason why i deleted all the stuff of me posting the shit he said...he cant have shit he says on the net...it may cause some ppl to be angry....so my suggestion is that although i do want this film to come out and support it in every way possible...that wel ellect someone to be the spokesperson for us (the fans of the deftones)...reason being is i dont feel i would be the right spokesperson for this
The Captain?
i was actually thinking Nuno...but doubt he has the time to do it...but the captain is a very good suggestion...here it goes...guys fight to the death

hehe, um...Thanks
Anyway, couple things...I'm not trying to replace the petition, but I want this myspace to act like a petition as well. So please, if you have a (or more) myspace, ADD it, COMMENT on it, 20 friends and my one little comment aren't going to change a thing. I do have the comments being screened just in case someone tries to leave one that will not help the situation and or if someone mentions a quote that could get the band or Andrew in an awkward situation. So please, add it, leave a thought out, polite comment/signature. We're trying to change the labels' mind, not piss them off.
Word.
I'm almost tempted to start a myspace for that very reason.
Tangent:Good to see you round Cap.
good cause. count me in, i'll help promote the shit out of this film. watching the preview it doesnt seem dark and depressing to me at all. but then again, Maverick have Madonna and Michelle Branch on the label...those bastard fucks!!!
This requires a most tragic 'accidental' leak of the 300 minute un-edited version, wo here cares about maverick?. I'll get on signing the petition, been in gay paree.

Much respect and thanks to people like DefUnNorma428 and The Captain for helping the good cause.
Gonna make it an item tomorrow on local radio (for what it's worth anyway) and try and spread it as much as possible.
I remember when the topic Donk created about it (as quoted by Cap) from back in the day. Also remember seeing the footage on Andrew Bennet's site and loving it.

Honestly, i liked what i saw in the B-sides and rarities! This film, looks kinda different. Each dvd with a different history!
you know I have been thinking about it, and being a deftones fan isn't fucking easy- sure you have moments of pure bliss like listening to white pony all the way through and getting to see the tones live and what not but then most of the time we are waiting (3 years) in between CD's and always asking the question what if or Why not? Like with this DVD, why do we get teased with it but maverick wont release it? why do the deftones play a new song during the taste of chaos tour just to make us wait another 6 months for the actual album?... sorry I just had to get that off my chest- carry on... ;)
good point tho man...the dvd thing pisses me off with maverick too but that will be explained soon...thats all im saying
good lord I signed this the other day and there were less than 100 sigs now its 750+
!!!!! but we'll still probably never see this film
Does anyone think it's still cool that the petition says
"Maverick Records felt that the film was "dark and depressing" ?
I'm not sure about the legalities but can we really make a claim that the record company feels this way?
If not The Captain then deftoolsys07 should be the spokesperson because ultimately he/she is the one who got the petition up in the first place.
And then again if neither of them want to be the spokesperson then I'd be willing and happy to be... =)
I might make some flyers for the petition and post them around the TOC show on Thursday. Anyone here gonna be at the Toronto show?
yo post thems shits at the show for sure...good thinking...and the petition should say something like maverick chose not to release it...once we get an official statement which will be soon...then we can quote that
everyone flood myspace with shit....the deftones offical myspace...and mavericks if they have one...aim for myspaces with alot of views and traffic...post trailer link and petition link....this way more ppl sign and when the ppl that should see this do...they will have to have a meeting
signed. the clip looks really cool.

Like with this DVD, why do we get teased with it but maverick wont release it? why do the deftones play a new song during the taste of chaos tour just to make us wait another 6 months for the actual album?... sorry I just had to get that off my chest- carry on... ;)
I must agree with you. Its not easy to be a Deftones fan! But thats the point to me. You must be patience! But i'm glad they take all this time to make records. At least, they always released gold pieces of music. And they just do when they want! Thats one of the most important thing about the Deftones (to me)!
for me is easy to be a Deftones fan, they make my life sweeter!!!
that sounded corny but who the hell, i love this guys!
Nobody needs to be a spokesperson, Maverick isn't going to talk to some random fan. If they won't talk to their own band and Andrew, they're not talking to us. All we can do is get the word out, build awareness and interest and build evidence that there is an audience out there, a waiting paycheck. My MySpace, the petition, the flyers, all that is great, but it's best if it works together. If anybody makes me some images, I'll put them in a blog as promo tools.
I hope we get that statement soon so we have something a little better to work with.

That might very well be, but it's worth a shot. It's worth several shots.
If someone tries, and Maverick says 'we don't have time', and the person pushes on, like, 'Ok, I'll try later' or 'When could you maybe find 5 minutes? We'd be very gratefull' and push and push it like that; it shows dedication.
Somewhere along the line, someone will say 'Allright....5 minutes...'.

i dont know if anyone followed the link in my last post but it looks like there was a petition a few years ago for when maverick stopped deftones.com from posting free downloadable bootlegs. it looks like some people got interested at that time and made a petition, even getting 1990 signatures but as far as i can tell it was to no avail. basically the main point is we have our work cut out for us

i don't mean to brag lol, i got arrested for a dwi, and while i was kinda half drunk i guess (getting arrested kind of killed the high lol) i just fuckin cussed out the whole police department where i live, i had this one cop that kept like gettin up in my face like screamin at me and shit and i just kept laughin at him, tellin him to fuck off and "fuck all you pigs" and all that shit, later that night my mom called the cops, and SIX cops came for ME (1 person) so i you know fucked with them again cuz they were pissin me off and they arrested me the second time for literally doing NOTHING, i was standing in my back yard haha (they didnt even read me my rights, and threw me up against my fence and shit) and when i got to court, they didn't mention shit about it...
ive only been arrested once but it was for paraphenalia (a bowl) and possesion which was actually rez in the bowl...and its not like its uncommon for a minor to get arrested....i was 17 at the time but now im 19...but if ur nice to the cops and admit ur wrong and dont be a prick...they will make it easier...i was super nice to the guy that arrested me and he let me off with if u dont get arrested for 6 months then we take this out of ur record...so the moral of this story is if anyone contacts maverick...dont be an asshole...be like nice and respectful, and talk like an adult

That's weird, because it's still on Andrew Bennett's site...
BUMP, come on, don't quit now
I'm wondering how much it would even cost Maverick to release this. If its already finished, than all production costs should be taken care of (except for packaging and artwork perhaps). I doubt that Andrew Bennett has already been paid for the video, since it hasn't been released, but i would be surprised if he expected much in the way of financial compensation. The company has to be aware of the demand for Deftones material and should know that the dvd would sell at least 30 to 40 thousand copies in its first week (in America). That would cover the costs of promotion and publication with enough revenue to make it all worthwhile. I wish we had more information in regards to why Maverick won't put this out (besides it being "dark and depressing," because, you know thats some bullshit).
i get the impression that something happened between deftones and maverick in the white pony days because they were getting so much promotional effort from the label i mean there were posters at every record store, there was an elaborate ep, and there was music video support. at the time they were talking about not only this documentary coming out but home movies too. so what happened? did maverick just turn into a bunch of assholes or is it really just about supply and demand?

What? They were the coolest label to sign to back then. The most easy going and relaxed out of all the labels who approached them. This was in 94 though, times change and so do label personnel.
EDIT: And think about it, way back then if you were a record company and it was your job to find artists who would hit the mainstream and sell well globally would you have signed the Deftones? No fucking way. Just because you like them it don't mean they'll sell well. They were a heavy ass, aggressive, inaccessible band at the start.. Definately not mainstream material. Maverick deserve props for signing them in the first place, being a cool label to the 'tones at the beginning and not dropping them by now.
maverick drop them? hah. if anything they should drop maverick. they'd do fine without them, mainly because they have a diehard fanbase. tons of labels would wanna pick them up, & promote them better. shit, if horrible dog shit music like disturbed & nickelback can get mass radioplay(i think their labels pay mass cash to get them played), then Deftones can too(& they manage to sell well without radio). they just need a label that will get them airtime/attention
err

I remember reading an article awhile ago, like late 90's in a guitar mag with the guitarists from Korn, Orgy, and Limp.
Anyway I remember Wes Borland was asked why he thought the deftones weren't as big as some other bands and Wes replied he thought the deftones weren't getting enough label support; advertising, marketing, etc.
It's kinda cool I think tho cuz they're not super big, but not that unkown. Knowwhutimean?
hopefully family values will gain them a lot of new fans
I think it's their music more than any label laziness that has kept them off the radar, so to speak, and especially when compared to LB.
I don't know about the states but in New Zealand every Deftones album has had as much hype and marketing as any other band.
yes, their label does suck at promoting them. but really when you think about it.. you act like the deftones arent well known. the deftones are fucking big, they're practicaly a house-hold name.. just because they dont get played on MTV and on the radio all the time doesnt mean they dont get the attention they deserve. it just means that they arent selling out like korn, limp bizkit, ect.
tool and deftones are doing it the right way.. and they always have. sticking to being a big, major ass band but not being mainstream. its awesome. i think they'd hang it up before they sold out to the radio and MTV. and to be honest about it.. i'd hope that they'd do so.
Have you seen the video for "Back to School"?
deftones are kinda like pantera, & slayer, in the fact that they get no almost no radio/mtv play yet still sell a lot of records, & still have a diehard following, & a long career. i think they've sold more records than slayer actually
it would be scary to see how big they could get if they got the attention they truly deserved

I gotta disagree there. Hopefully it doesn't. Imagine if, for example, Deftones were as big as Korn. Basically the majority of people who will be at Family Values who aren't there to see the Deftones will probably be douches.
I've always wished the Deftones success. But I'll freely admit I'm glad they're not popular and if they did 'blow up' I'd be pretty fucking pissed off.

Personally, I think the deftones music has nothing to do with their lack of exposure. Musically I think they were (are) a lot more appealing than a lot of the other bands they were coming up to they got compared with like in the 90's (the whole nu-metal thing)
I mean they guitar wise they were just as heavy (well maybe heavier) than korn, limp, etc., but lyrically a lot more appealing and c'mon Chino's singing voice is way better than jon davis, fred durst, etc.
I really think it's a matter of marketing/advertising. But like I said they're not that unknown, but not super big like say Green Day. At least that's how I see it in the states. I mean look at The Taste of Chaos tour. They headlined the biggest venue they could here in Sac, Arco Arena, but never headlined there before,
in their own hometownI'd venture to guess most people know who the deftones are, but unfortunatly marketing creates hype and hype creates mass appeal. But it could also create quicker downfall too which is why I think it''s good that the tones
aren't like way big.
I'm glad they're in this position. I mean..
They have a way to live, feed their families, pay their bills (did i wrote right?!) and have some fun @ the same time, doing what they like to do.
They deserve a lot more of credit for some changes in the music history, since they start to jam and jump around the world, creating a new sound, better and more confident than kRon, limp bizkit and shit like that!
Maybe they're happy with all that they got through the years. I think the Deftones sound find the right persons. Its not that kind of sound that everyone can hear and feel!

I just wish this would Leak online somewhere...like MIRC...just send it to someone accidentily and they won't be able to trace who leaked it.
see the thing is for me to "accidentaly" send it to someone i would have to get the directer to send the thing to me...and it would be obvious who would have leaked it or got it to be leaked...plus i wont try that route untill im positive theres no way for this film to see the light of day
well I don't know why the director would have to send it to you for it to be leaked...I don't even know who you are. But, a leak can happen anywhere at any time...the director just has to give a copy to somebody and have that person make a few copies and then have the thing ripped on a computer somewhere and added to a bot on a channel on MIRC. I'm sure that the director has made copies and given them out to some friends and executives for it to be viewed.

they do have a record label, its called ToneDef records, its been out since like around White Pony era, but I don't think it ever took off, so , if they are done with Maverick, I think they'll go under their own Label, and then they could really do some bitchin stuff
First off, Tone Def was an imprint of Maverick which is already an imprint of Warner. Second, it never happened, just lots of talk.
Deftones need a major label, not for the support, but the pressure. Sure, I think they should take their time until an album is right, but they don't have the discipline to get things done. We'd probably just be getting s/t if the band was running their own shit.
I don't know if they're going to quit Maverick or not. Part of me wants them to quit Maverick and find a better label that gives them better creative control, and better coverage and publicity. However, another part of me wants them to stay with Maverick due to the stability. If they went independent I don't know if their music would be as far reaching. I'm also worried that they might not be able to get another deal with a major label. I don't think there are many labels willing to sign the Deftones, because the Deftones aren't a huge selling band. And that's all record companies care about, Selling records. I guess that all I can really hope for is that the Deftones have a good label that supports them creatively and doesn't worry about how many records they sell. However, that may be a dream.

People have copies. I know that for a fact.
And if you know people that have copies, hook me up with one.
dude how much more creative control do you want? fuckin deftones do whatever they want at maverick.. fuckin madonna just sits there and takes it up the ass with them..
Madonna hasn't had anything to do with Maverick in years. ...YEARS! hahahhaha
i doubt they'd be able to release it if they went independent because it was made when they were with maverick....this means maverick own the DVD and they wont let them release it when and if they get off the label. It was the same way when Roadrunner made Glassjaw take off their last track Convectuoso off of Worship and Tribute (Warner Bros) because they wrote it when they were with Roadrunner.

So did we all stop caring about this?
Nope. Still do 8)
We all still care about this, but there's only so much we can do and I think it's been done. Discussing it over and over again won't do shit. Sign the petition or get on the myspace page. Not much else you can do man.
Wait, wait...let's send Maverick....
Def threats.
;)
haha, yeah that'll work
so far i was able to get 1,339 signatures from the petition i started... i guess it's not THAT bad..
http://www.petitiononline.com/tonesdvd/
those petitions would be so much more legit if 1 person alone couldn't sign them a billion times. should only allow 1 sign per person
it's not going to get released anytime soon imo

That number is nothing though really in terms of prospective sales.

Too bad but its true! :(
i still care about this as well ive emailed andrew bennett a bunch and he still hasnt gotten back to me...last i heard from him he was shooting something so hes probably busy with that and post production
edit...i have his phone number but i dont wanna be like a stalker...he said he was gonna give me that statement but hes prolly all tied up with work and shit
since the last one got locked, here you go
In the meantime we found out that it wasn't put out, not only due to it being 'depressive' but due to lack of actual live song footage as well as (a lot of) scenes couldn't be on it, which in turn is due to Maverick.
I can see why they (being the Deftones, besides Maverick) didn't want to put it out then.
That's not to say, the footage that would have been on there doesn't kick ass, which is does, but I can see that if it's not 100% Deftones, they won't put it out
mostly, i just want them to release some kind of live DVD, not necessarily entertain me. i just posted the link cause a secret friend brought it to my attention and i figured that if even a small fraction of a small fraction of the 3000+ registered users on SL saw and signed it might give the boys a good idea
I wish Andrew Bennet would just release it for free on the net.. and just let people download it.. I would totally watch it.
in an interview in romania with chino and frank, chino specified that they will not be releasing the entertain me video. they will sometime in the future try to assemble a good documentary that maverick and the tones would 'love' to put out.
wow i thought this thread was something new and i was like "where did 12 pages of thread all the sudden come from?"
then i noticed it was from like april 2006 and so i signed the thing anyways.
what was the opera song on the video?? anyone know?
