Title: Mastodon
Post by: Chrisbo on Sep 13, 2006, 05:27 PM
This band deserves a proper good thread (did a search, couldnt find a proper good one) because they are fucking immense! 'Blood Mountain' is probably one of the best new albums I've heard in a very long time (well since Leviathan and Panopticon). Personally for me, I would say they are the mother fucking gods of modern day heavy metal, fuck Trivium and all those other bands, they dont know what the hell they're doing compared to this lot. So yeah, just wondering what the general opinion of them is here?

(Just noticed as well, in the recent email from the Deftones mailing list, they mention something about a Mastodon e-card and how they 'respect them' and all that. It's always cool to find that one of your favourite bands digs another of your favourite bands heh).

I like them. I am still waiting for someone to upload Blood Mountain, although Ive already heard it on their myspace page when they had it posted. Im also a big QOTSA fan so it was tight to hear that track with Josh Homme.

I can't wait to hear Blood Mountain. Mastodon really is a great modern day metal band. Do any of you have live vids of them?

Dont have any live videos myself, but did a wee search on you tube and came up with a few pretty cool vids

Aqua Dementia: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5UIYvbX9OU

Circle Of Cysquatch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vs23iF3hnWo

Ol'e Nessie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rIUTJgf6PA

Mother Puncher: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNFAgsUamx8

March Of The Fire Ants: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLv8SDpOExY

Blood & Thunder (check the title though, what an eejit): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fG2noRLgYA

Seriously though, the more I listen to Blood Mountain, the more I think it's a masterpiece, could even be their best yet, even better than Leviathan, and that's saying something. I would upload it but I dont have the time to do that just now. And the song with Josh Homme is pretty damn cool yeah! He also speaks on a secret track at the end, being the typical fool that he is haha! :D

I had the chance to see them live at a festival last year but for some reason I didn't do that. I guess I had a few more beers instead.

but I regret that, considering they're awesome.

Mastodon was definitely one of the best live shows I've ever been to, the energy between the band and the crowd was immense! If you get a chance to see them again, take it man! I cant wait until they come back here. Apparently after they finish the tour with Converge and The Bronx, they're doing a few dates in Japan and then taking a month break (as Bill has got a baby on the way) before doing a long European tour. Cant wait!

Title: Re: Mastodon
Post by: Chrisbo on Sep 20, 2006, 04:34 PM
See that's what's good about Mastodon, they have a little bit of everything. Traditional rock/metal, Thrash metal, hardcore, metalcore, progressive metal, psychadelia. It's quite hard to just pin them down to one genre, and that's really refreshing, especially in the modern metal world.

holy crapstick, i just listened to Blood Mountain. that album blew me away.

I've also been getting into this band lately. Actually, more than just getting into, I really love this stuff. I hardly ever listen to music like this, but these guys are different, these guys make me nod my head.

Hey, could anyone upload the new album? I downloaded it from Albumbase but there is some sort of password protection on the file and the password which is displayed on teh site does not work for some reason.

I would upload the album, but my bro has the fricking CD and he's in Glasgow. Yoda, where are you downloading it from?

Anyhow, my favourite song on the new album is probably 'Sleeping Giant', I love that guitar pitch before the verse crashes in, so nice! 'Colony Of Birchmen' is ace as well!

Mastodon have been con firmed to support Tool on their upcoming UK tour. The dates are Manchester MEN November 25, Glasgow SECC 25, London Wembley Arena 27, Cardiff International Arena 30, Nottingham Arena December 1.

I've read somewhere else that they're going to be doing the whole of the European tour, not just the UK.

Yeah man, some copies come with a DVD which has a 45 minute documentary and a 'Capillarian Crest' video. The artwork is awesome as is per usual!

Talking of Capillarian Crest, that's a pretty god damn technical tune if ever I've heard one!

it's incredible how awesome Blood Mountain is. I cant remember last i've been so excited about a metal album/band, since i'm not really a metalhead.

the only song i dont like is Bladecatcher, other than that it's a totally flawless album and one of the best i've heard in years.
Title: Re: Mastodon

Bladecatcher is really odd I wonder what the story behind that one is.

Post by: Chrisbo on Sep 24, 2006, 10:45 AM
Bladecatcher is pretty damn wierd, but once you get past the scratch-y grindey bit it's quite catchy! I dont mind it at all!

So far for this year, in the best album stakes, Blood Mountain is battling with 10,000 Days in my eyes. Still need to wait and hear new Deftones and ISIS though.

Yeah its Brent and Troy singing on that one, only vocal guests are Scott Kelly on Crystal Skull, Josh Homme on Colony Of Birchmen, and Cedric on Siberian Divide.

Blood Mountain is amazing. Def one of the best cds of the year.

Post by: Chrisbo on Sep 29, 2006, 12:14 PM
Yeah, true! It is definitely him on the verse too though, it doesnt sound like brent or troy, the voice is well kinda too young sounding for them, so yeah that's him.
Title: Re: Mastodon
Post by: JOV on Sep 29, 2006, 02:18 PM
I think its definitely Troy on verse, maybe Cedric is doing some backing vocals somewhere, but i cant clearly hear him anywhere but on that part i mentioned earlier. Cant be 100% sure though, thats just what i hear. Probably some interview could confirm whats the truth :)

Hmmm...I dont think so, with the majority of Mastodons material Troy is the one who does most of the strained scream-y vocals (from what I remember live), and Brent does most of the clean vocal bits and some of the scream-y bits. But me personally, I dont think the verse vocals on that song sound like either of them. Ach well, who knows, the vocals are mostly obscure in that song, so I guess it could be any of them.

They're fucking amazing live man! The next time they tour here, you better get your ass to one of their shows or you'll regret it hehe!

As for the connection thing, I havent got a scooby man! All I know is that I remember reading quite a few interviews where the band mentions Neurosis as a key influence, so dont know, maybe they just asked, and he accepted. Then again, Mastodon isnt the first band the band members were in, Brann and Bill were in Today Is The Day for a while, maybe there's some link there and whatnot, or maybe they toured with Neurosis or one of the various side projects or something and became friends with him. I really dont know how, but I'd like to know!

I wasn't sure either, but I think it's 'cause I'd lived with Leviathan for so long. Then I stuck it on headphones whilst I read a book and just let it flow...A brilliant way to get into an 'album' type band, 'cause when you come back to it you know it all subconciously. I honestly think this might be the 'Puppets' of this generation...I know that was banded about for Leviathan but I think this is the one!

They're one of those bands where the riffs are really lyrical and tell a story (or maybe that should be a 'saga'!) I don't know if anyone will understand that. It's like listening to a symphony, but a symphony arranged for drop-tuned guitars and thunderclouds and played punk as fuck barbarians. 'Crystal Skull' is just awesome. You won't get that bridge riff out of your head for centuries!

To all those wanting it uploading, go and buy it! Didn't Lars Ulrich teach you that you're killing music?

A friend of mine, was trying to make some lyrics to Pendelous skin, i mean, we think that there are some words, altought all lyrics web pages (even the official one) just says "instrumental". He just heightened the volume from his PC and start writing some of words he thinks that are the lyrics

"nooooo left of rain
high long long long
you run away

motor rain, no
reserve rain, no

i love you more than
long long away, then

fly, i love the rain
die, love gerome gerome
you run away

must have rain, no
must have rain, no

i love you more than
long long away, then

fly, i love the rain
die, love gerome gerome
you run away

must have rain, no
must have rain, no

(guitar)

i love you more than
long long away, then

fly, i love the rain
die, love gerome gerome
you run away

must have rain, no
must have rain, no"

So, if you guys want to discuss, here is it.

new song from mastodon

wtf is this?
so far i liked every album and every single song from this band and it quickly gained one of my favourite bands overall.
but this song.....sux....
does it feature some guest musician or who the fuck is squealing there? this really doesnt sound like a normal mastodon song. usually a band developing and changing its style, just like they did wit hthe last records, is a great and interesting thing, but this truly is leading into a wrong direction in my opinion.
but before i loose my trust in this band, i will wait for more stuff.

a weird thing happened one night. my computer played"The wolf is loose" on random..and when the drums kicked in, my german shepard jumped up and quickly looked left and right and started running and barking like mad

we were pretty stoned so we thought it was the most amazing thing we had seen. like a "wolf' style dog freaking out to a song called the wolf is loose..

we then made the decision that Mastodon are in tune with the animals for sure!

from billboard.com:

Hard rock outfit Mastodon is five songs into its next Warner Bros. studio album, which the group is recording in its Atlanta hometown with producer Brendan O'Brien.

Drummer Brann Dailor tells Billboard.com that so far, "everything sounds real creepy and spaced out and different." He's particularly enthused about a 15-minute jam dubbed "The Last Baron," which happily, O'Brien had no interest in making shorter or changing.

"There's so many toys to play with over at his studio, like pipe organs and all this crazy sh*t," says Dailor, who was introduced to O'Brien through Bruce Springsteen drummer Max Weinberg (his son is a big Mastodon fan). "There are little cool things we're going to do to the record that we've been wanting to do for a long time."

Dailor promises the as-yet-untitled album, which should be out before the end of the year, will have the conceptual feel of prior releases "Leviathan" (based around "water") and "Blood Mountain" ("earth"), but he's not ready to get specific just yet.

"I think a lot of people didn't realize 'Blood Mountain' was a concept record," he says. "We made up our own story again this time, but we may try to make it a little more evident that that's what's going on. I like to keep them speculating on our message board. There's no possible way they could guess this."

Among the other tracks tipped to make the cut are "Divinations," which Dailor describes as "a mover and a shaker," and "Oblivion," which he says is "real moody. It feels like the music got a little deeper somehow." He adds that Neurosis singer Scott Kelly may wind up making a guest appearance on the album but that nothing is set in stone yet.

Fans are likely to get a taste of new Mastodon material during the band's set at Bonnaroo next weekend ("We can't wait any longer," Dailor admits). Afterward, Mastodon will return to Atlanta to continue work with O'Brien before embarking on the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem tour July 9 in Seattle.

"I have a feeling like I had before 'Leviathan' came out," Dailor says. "It was like, I was feeling like we're not that band. Everyone thinks we're the band that did 'Remission,' but we're not. We're a new band."

Anyway I'm soooo fucking excited for this :D I'm hoping they'll come support Meshuggah on their UK tour, even if the album isn't out by then which is more than likely won't be. That's probably just wishful thinking though :[

Mastodon have booked the following off-dates with Machine Head and Black Tide from the upcoming "Rockstar Energy Mayhem Tour":
July 10th Portland, OR - Roseland Theater
July 17th Las Vegas, NV - House of Blues
August 04th Poughkeepsie, NY - The Chance

Meanwhile a promo image for Mastodon's upcoming new album that has been making the rounds bears a close resemblance to "The Mad Monk" Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin; leading some to speculate Rasputin will be a theme in the groups upcoming conceptual effort.

I remember when they played Manchester last year and Blood And Thunder finished at about 10:50 so I figured the set was over, and Troy [having not said much at all all night] just turned round and went "...this is Hearts Alive" which is one of my all time favourites of theirs ^__^

So, got Blood Mountain on tuesday (6 euros, new) Saw it on the local music shop and just thought, fuck should I buy it? .. Yeah.

I've heard the single songs from the album a couple of times and thought.. not as good as Leviathan..

I've kinda forgotten this band for a year or so, SO I thought fuck, Leviathan kicked balls back then (and still does) and Remission has good songs (Mother`fucking´puncher etc.) So, I'm gonna give this fucker a try.

After a few listens, I recognize Colony, wolf and crystal skull and shit.. Yeah theyre great.

Then a few listens more.. Starts to open more and yeah I love Mastodon.

The End.

Probably one of the best fitting band shirts I have actually - I was pretty shocked when they were selling girl's shirts at their merch stand after the show last year when like, I've seen bigger bands like Killswitch Engage who didn't :/

I listened to This Mortal Soil about 10 times in a row the other night... definitely my favourite off BM :]

MASTODON REVEAL TITLE AND TRACKLIST!

Posted by wbrtech

Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at 10:51pm

MASTODON have set "Crack the Skye" as the title of their new album, due in early 2009. The seven-song, 50-minute effort was recorded at Southern Tracks Studios in Atlanta and was produced and mixed by Brendan O'Brien....

"Crack the Skye" track listing:

01. Oblivion
02. Divinations
03. Quintessence
04. The Czar
I. Usurper
II. Escape
III. Martyr
IV. Spiral
05. Ghost of Karelia
06. Crack The Skye
07. The Last Baron

Excellence.

Agree, when I first heard short clips of Divinations and Oblivion I was pissed. Hearing the album in full quality has me sold completely. This could very well end up being my favorite Mastodon album. Considering Leviathan would probably make my top 10 of all time, that makes it one helluvan album in my book.

Listened to the album a couple of times now. I'm not completely blown away, but still a fantastic album. I miss some of the aggression of the earlier albums. They've definitely grown as musicians. Vocally and production wise, this is their best yet.

Stand out tracks:
Oblivion
Ghost of Karelia
Crack the Skye (awesome guest vocals by Scott Kelly)
The Last Baron

Least favorite track:
Quintessence (not a bad song, but it needs to grow on me. Not quite sure about that chorus yet).

But yeah, I obviously need to listen to this a lot more (all great albums need repeated listens before being able to fully grasp the greatness.)

the only problem with this album is that they tried so hard to make an epic sounding, old-school progressive album, that it lacks a bit in variety. it just felt a bit monotonous compared to their past albums.

but its still damn good

i think its all part of the story they are telling. it would sound wierd and out of place, not to mention stray from the story, if they threw in a real heavy, crazy, fast track to spice things up. then they would have been trying to hard IMO.

they didnt really try to make it sound like that, it just happened to come out that way.

I loe the shit out of the new album, all of the lyrics are really really good and I'm more amped about seeing them in 12 days than i have been for any other band in a long time.

QuoteMany bands claim to be psychedelic rock, but Mastodon actually lobbies for the title. From an article in the April 16, 2009, issue of Rolling Stone:

The Mastodon brain trust of Hinds and Dailor get their weird lyrical ideas the old fashioned way: "It comes from us doing too much acid," Hinds says. "Acid is the best drug in the world. It did the most amazing things for my creative psyche, and it still is doing things for me."

Seeking refuge from an operatically awful childhood, drummer-lyricist Dailor tripped almost nonstop from the age of 14 until his early 20s. "I went to high school on acid," he recalls. "Droppers filled with liquid acid on my tongue and just going for it, fully exiting what I consider to be an earthly plane. And when the acid wore off, I had a connection with that kind of music, with Frank Zappa and Yes and King Crimson."

Mastodon has a new album out, 'Crack the Skye', but I'm not too impressed with their first single, so instead I'll feed you the crazy Blood and Thunder video from the album 'Leviathan'. Of course, if you're not a fan of metal or death metal or anything remotely metal-ish, you can just skip it.

copied this from aint it cool news:

JONAH HEX news so mind-meltingly awesome that only Satan's Mighty Balls are cooler!

Hey folks, Harry here with awesomeness the likes of which only Medusa's slithering snakey bush might conceal badassery to match. It seems this is the time of year where little birdies will come a calling with mind-numbing news of unmatched wowitude.

Today - and many other days as well - the metal gods known as MASTODON have been not so quietly scoring the film JONAH HEX. When I asked what it was sounding like, the only response was, "Needless to say, pretty heavy!"

Man - Daft Punk doing TRON 2. Mastodon doing JONAH HEX - geek just got real cool - The metal sounds of an occult western. SO COOL. I really do have an incredibly good feeling about this. Of course, I also bought tickets for METALOCALYPSE with Dethklok and Mastodon this November here in Austin, so I'm chomping at the bit for this tiny rocking bit of awe! How about you?

Well my friend who posted last, you should go see them on this tour. I just got back from seeing Converge, Mastodon, and Dethklok. Hell of a show.
Converge was the usual (awesome) even though this was a much larger venue than I've seen them at. Then Mastodon came on and holy fuck. What a performance. They filmed the show for a future cd/dvd, so keep an eye out for that (Live At Aragon Ballroom, Chicago) on youtube or something because aside from the professional film crew, a lot of people brought recording devices with inside.
But sweet Jesus, I had never seen Mastodon live before, but they blew me away. They played Crack The Skye in its entirety, with a movie playing behind them the whole time. It really enhanced the experience a lot more than I ever could have imagined. Then their encore was another 6 songs or so spanning their entire back catalogue all the way back to Remission. Just an absolutely incredible performance from Mastodon.
This was all before Dethklok hit the stage. And honestly, after Mastodon any band would be a lot worse. It was cool seeing Dethklok just see them live, but there was something lacking from them after witnessing Mastodon master their craft. Gene Hoglan plays some mean drums and I didn't realize Brendon Small did ALL 5 band members' voices on Metalocalypse, as he used the voices all throughout their set.

Oh and if you go see Mastodon, come prepared with a joint or two.

Following the June 18 opening of the feature film "Jonah Hex", Reprise Records will release a six-track EP from MASTODON from the film's original motion picture score "Jonah Hex" on June 29, 2010.

"Jonah Hex" features an original score by Reprise recording artists MASTODON and Oscar-nominated composer Mario Beltrami ("The Hurt Locker", "3:10 to Yuma"). MASTODON was asked to create the score personally by the film's director, Jimmy Hayward, who was inspired by repeated listenings of MASTODON's 2006 album, "Blood Mountain".

"Jimmy called us out of the blue as a fan," bassist Troy Sanders told Paste magazine in an interview. "It was the most beautiful, authentic way to collaborate."

For its first film-scoring experience, MASTODON recorded the tracks for "Jonah Hex" by viewing movie footage and actually composing the score spontaneously on the spot in the studio. This method of experimental and immediate composition proved to be a daring, daunting and ultimately fun way of creating music together over a short period of time. The resulting sessions yielded incredibly exciting results produced in a completely different way than they normally would approach writing and recording for a MASTODON album. Fans will get a chance to hear the four new tracks — "Death March", "Clayton Boys", "Indian Theme" and "Train Assault", with two bonus versions as they become available through iTunes and all other digital outlets.

Based on the legendary character from the comic book series from DC Comics, "Jonah Hex" is an epic action adventure about one man's personal quest for redemption against the canvas of the battle between good and evil. The film stars Academy Award nominee Josh Brolin ("Milk", "No Country For Old Men"), two-time Academy Award nominee John Malkovich ("In the Line of Fire", "Places in the Heart"), Megan Fox ("Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen"), Michael Fassbender ("Inglourious Basterds"), Will Arnett ("Blades of Glory") and Academy Award nominee Michael Shannon ("Revolutionary Road").

MAstodon more than anyone, garner love for all their albums from varying sections of their fans...they have pulled off more than anyone I can think of, changing musical direction without losing an overall greatness to each record. In saying that though, I still love Remission the most. Then Leviathan, Crack the Skye, Lifesblood and lastly Blood Mountain - its easily the least revisited for me.

Good news from theprp:

"Mastodon's forthcoming live DVD/CD outing "Live At The Aragon" has been scheduled for a March 15th release date through Reprise. The footage comes from a show the band played at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, IL during their "Crack The Skye" touring cycle. According to Metal Sucks, it will find the band performing their latest ffort "Crack The Skye" in its entirety, along with other tracks from their back catalogue, plus a Melvins cover.

The group have hinted in the past that the project may feature a documentary section helmed by Jimmy Hubbard as well. In other Mastodon news, the band have been added to the July 08th-09th "Sonisphere Festival" in Amneville, France."

Atlanta progressive metallers MASTODON will release a new live DVD/CD, "Live At The Aragon", on March 15 via Reprise. The set was filmed/recorded during the band's October 17, 2009 concert at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, Illinois and it features a performance of the "Crack The Skye" album, along with other tracks from MASTODON's back catalog, plus a MELVINS cover.

MASTODON's setlist for the show was as follows:

01. Oblivion
02. Divinations
03. Quintessence
04. The Czar
05. Ghost of Karelia
06. Crack The Skye
07. The Last Baron
08. Circle of Cysquatch
09. Aqua Dementia
10. Where Strides The Behemoth
11. Mother Puncher
12. The Bit (MELVINS cover)

Some dude is saying that setlist is missing these tracks

8.Crusher Destroyer
9.Crystal Skull
10.I Am Ahab
11.Capillarian Crest
12.Aqua Dementia
13.Circle of Cysquatch
14.Iron Tusk
15.March of the Fire Ants
16.Blood and Thunder

Is that right?
I really hope is 20 songs not 12
If anyone was at that show please confirm if the setlist is correct.

Crack the Skye has cast a spell on my lately. Been listening to it on repeat. Can't stop. The "Making of" on the bonus DVD furthermore proved the excellence on this album.

Yup, favorite Mastodon album now.

Here's how I'd rate the full length studio releases:

Crack the Skye
Leviathan
Blood Mountain (Was my favorite for a long time, but it just seems a little disjointed and unfocused, compared to the above. Still love it though.)
Remission

As I said earlier in this thread, I'd love a mix between Crack the Skye and Leviathan on the next album. Keep it melodic and prog'ish, but add a few more heavy hitters (eg. Crack the Skye title track)

hell yeah dude, definitely my fave too. Actually would probably rank their albums same way as you. Track for track Leviathan slightly edges out Blood Mountain for 2nd, barely. Iron Tusk and Blood And Thunder are just such great tracks, making that album stand out more. Funny how sometimes an outsider would think Remission is pure trash, but that's even a pretty damn good last place album, haha.

Yeah, definitely. I dig Remission a lot. Just raw and in-your-face-heavy as fuck. Crusher Destroyer, March of the Fire Ants, Mother Puncher...classics.

Crack The Skye - Live @ The Aragon

"The last couple of years have been really amazing for us as a band, we've played hundreds of shows for thousands of amazing fans!! We're super excited to be able to share one of those incredible nights with you all. Whether or not you were there, you saw us somewhere else, or didn't get the opportunity, now you can either relive it or see it for the first time with Live at the Aragon, we're really proud of it and we hope you dig it too. One of my favorite things about the DVD is that it comes with the tour movie that played behind us perfectly synced up with the album giving it a whole new visual life, watch it!!!
Your fan,
Brann"

"Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye — those albums took too long to make. This only took us a couple weeks to record and there's a totally different feeling to it. It's a jump-on-your-bed, get naked, and go streaking kind of record. I haven't had this feeling about a Mastodon record since [2004's] Leviathan. It's just fucking awesome."

"We've got a song about fighting, there's a song about lifting heavy stuff, there's a song about people on meth creeping around in trees trying to get the best wood grain out of a tree to sell it at Lowe's for [drug] money... The album is kind of silly. We're taking the piss out of things."

Just saw Mastodon for the first time yesterday with Kvelertak as the warmup band. Kvelertak kicked ass like they always do, and so did Mastodon. Seems like they were having a really good time. The sound was pretty awful though which ruined it a bit for me. If i didn't already know the songs it wold be a wasted concert, it just got real saucy most of the time. Still it rocked my socks off, and they played aqua dementia so i'm satisfied.

Atlanta progressive metallers MASTODON have revealed more songtitles that will appear on their new album, "The Hunter", tentatively due in October. The CD is expected to include the following tracks, among others:

* Blasteroids
* The Octopus Has No Friends
* Stargasm
* Curl Of The Burl
* All The Heavy Lifting
* The Sparrow
* The Ruiner

When asked about the sound of MASTODON's forthcoming album, drummer Brann Dailor told the German edition of Metal Hammer magazine, "When you listen to the songs, they don't sound as 'fun' as we perceive them to be, I guess; it's still pretty extremely heavy material." He added, "We had a few songs that were kind of, not left over from 'Crack The Skye', but just stuff that we wanted to be on that album, but that album kind of took on a whole different thing of its own and there were a few stragglers that were super-heavy and crazy that didn't make it, and we finally got to put them on this record. And then we wrote a whole bunch of brand new stuff. There's, like, 14 songs that we recorded. And it's sort all over the place — a lot of different sounds. Some straight-up classic-rock-sounding songs, straight-up death metal-sounding songs and some completely bizarre, weirdo rock songs that we're not really sure what they are, but we love them."

"The Hunter" was recorded at Doppler Studios in Atlanta with producer Mike Elizondo. Drum tracks were previously completed in Los Angeles at the legendary Sound City Studios where NIRVANA's masterwork "Nevermind" was recorded. Songtitles set to appear on the album include "Blasteroids" and "All The Heavy Lifting".

MASTODON is currently in Europe for a summer-long tour that includes all dates on this year's Sonisphere festival as well as the Rock Im Park, Rock Am Ring, Roskilde festivals and more. The band will also play a one-off show at The Gorge in Seattle on July 30 with SOUNDGARDEN, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, and MEAT PUPPETS.

The same destination will also offer an amazing exclusive video for the song. This is the only place to see and hear this MASTODON rarity.

Deathbed is awesome.

Saw Mastodon live yesterday at Roskilde Festival and it was fucking insane. They blew me away.

I was worried how their vocals would sound live, but they sounded awesome.

Setlist:

1. Iron Tusk
2. March of the Fire Ants
3. Where Strides the Behemoth
4. Mother Puncher
5. Circle of Cysquatch
6. Aqua Dementia
7. Crack the Skye
8. Ghost of Karelia
9. Sleeping Giant
10. The Czar
11. The Wolf Is Loose
12. Crystal Skull
13. I Am Ahab
14. Seabeast
15. Capillarian Crest
16. Bladecatcher
17. Colony of Birchmen
18. Megalodon
19. Blood and Thunder
20. The Bit (Melvins cover)

Really fucking heavy setlist. Almost a nonstop onslaught.

It surprised me that they didn't play Oblivion and Divinations, though.

Edit: I also saw Kylesa and they were BADASS as well.

Other good live experiences included Iron Maiden and Parkway Drive.

been listening to a shitload of Mastodon lately. never really got them up until now. seeing them at Sonisphere in Stockholm might have helped.

so far I've only listened to Blood Mountain and Leviathan though, but I'm sticking to them until I get bored and then move on to the next album. might last a bit longer that way.

That sounds like a good a idea, although when you want more, you're gonna have Remission and Crack the Skye to listen to which are at total opposite ends of the spectrum.

Title: Re: Mastodon
Post by: Oldnewtype on Sep 18, 2011, 04:36 AM
dude I love the bands on both bills but i would definitely say go see BTBAM. I'm going to see them on the Saints and Sinners tour when it comes here to New Orleans, which is actually the same day MC Chris is playing but thats still a pretty easy decision compared to yours.

My dilemma is that Mastodon is coming to the New Orleans Voodoo Fest. Single day tickets are $75 bucks and the only artists playing that day I've even heard of are Snoop Dog, Kreayshawn, and the headliner for the night is fucking Blink 182. Unfortunately I don't think I can pay that much money to basically go just for Mastodon.... Gonna be hard to pass it up. Plus its the same day as our annual White Trash Bash.

that can't be. about to give it my first listen but crack the skye is their masterpiece. give it time and i'm sure you'll calm down and realize they can never top that album.
Title: Re: Mastodon

I think it's unfair to compare the two albums.

Crack the Skye is full on prog-metal and The Hunter is much more straight forward/punk'ish.

Anyways, new album fucking rules.

Title: Re: Mastodon
Post by: Jacob on Sep 26, 2011, 02:17 PM
I gotta say I'm disappointed. over the last few months I've listened a lot to Blood Mountain and Leviathan. I left Crack The Skye for later, believing it was their masterpiece and looked forward to hearing it. but I just can't get into it now. I think it's too clean and somewhat pretentious. I know, that's a difficult word to use with a band like Mastodon, but it somehow feels like instead of experimenting with themes as they did before, they had made up their on what the "perfect" Mastodon album would sound like and it kinda falls completely flat. what I like about the previous albums is how spontaneous they are, without being simple. Crack The Skye sounds like it's supposed to be more challening, but actually ends up too simple and one-sided.

and on The Hunter, not only have they completely lost their dirty gritty sound, but they seem to have lost all inspiration for writing original songs. half of the songs on the album sound like pretty generic classic rock songs from the 70's and 80's, played by a modern band. take Spectrelight, for example. I just can't stop hearing "Run To The Hills" when listening to that song. it's not BAD, it's actually one of the best modern takes on classic rock I've heard. but it's not what made me love Leviathan and Blood Mountain.

I'm all for bands changing direction and trying new things out. I'm just disappointed, that's all.
Title: Re: Mastodon
Post by: theis on Sep 26, 2011, 06:08 PM
Damn, I couldn't disagree more. I absolutely love it.

Stargasm, Blasteroid, Dry Bone Valley, Creature Lives, The Sparrow... those are the highlights. But really, I don't think there is one weak song. I love that they didn't make a Crack the Skye, Part 2.

As it stands now, I couldn't pick a favorite Mastodon album. I love them all equally for different reasons.

I like that as well, but to me Mastodon rather went in the opposite direction. WP is in my opinion when Deftones found their own sound, while ATF sounds like pretty generic nu-metal. and this is Mastodon's ATF.

They lost their edge. The Hunter is just plain boring. You can still hear the mastodon sound, but it just feels so generic and bland. "It's just the curl of the burl, it's just the way of the world", come on! Really!

Disagree, I also listen to bands like Eyehategod Down and Baroness and such, and the hunter reminds me of that so i like it. My favorite song by them is Iron Tusk though From the Leviathan album, My god that song is awesome. That riff.. is just punishing.

yeah Yellow and Green is one of my faves of 2012. And I have nothing against The Hunter either. It was what it was. It wasn't the usual Mastodon of old, but it was still enjoyable to me. Bands gotta evolve somewhat, even if some old fans don't like it.

I was into The Hunter when it came out but I rarely, if ever, listen to it anymore. It's sad. I still love Mastodon and it's a good record but it didn't blow me away by any means. And honestly, I hate The Creature Lives. But Blasteroid and Dry Bone Valley are great songs.

I really like the direction Mastodon has gone. I wasn't big into their early albums but Crack the Skye was a masterpiece. The Hunter was pretty good too as well as Blood Mountain. When those guys take time to make a record, it comes out brilliant. Their drummer is a beast.

Title: Re: Mastodon
Post by: RoyalDeftonicBoy on Nov 21, 2013, 07:21 PM
Atlanta progressive metallers MASTODON will enter the studio in a couple of weeks with producer Nick Raskulinecz (FOO FIGHTERS, RUSH, ALICE IN CHAINS) to begin recording their new album for a 2014 release.
Speaking to RollingStone.com, MASTODON drummer Brann Dailor said: "[Nick is] a rock guy. He's a rocker. He likes to rock. He's done a bunch of our friends' records that sound great. I'm a fan of all the DEFTONES records he's done, all the ALICE IN CHAINS stuff, and he worked with QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE on [their 2002 album] 'Songs For The Deaf'."
According to Dailor, MASTODON has written "18 or 19 songs" for the follow-up to 2011's "The Hunter".
"It's gonna be massive and insane, lots of epic greatness," he said. "There will be lots of huge riffs and new directions. It's real weird, real math-y, real straightforward. It's up, down and all around. It's a culmination of everything for the band. The snowball keeps rolling and collecting snow."
On December 10, Warner Bros. Records will digitally release "Mastodon Live At Brixton", a recording of MASTODON's February 11, 2012 performance at London, England's O2 Academy in Brixton. This sold-out performance was MASTODON's first show at the legendary venue. An audio-only version and a live video version directed by Ryan Mackfall (Crashburn Media) (both featuring the full 97-minute performance) will be available from all digital retailers, including iTunes and Amazon.
In addition to performing "Curl of the Burl", "Black Tongue" and "Dry Bone Valley" from "The Hunter", the band dug into their catalog, unearthing such scorching tracks as "Colony of Birchmen", "Capillarian Crest" and "Iron Tusk".

It's not the producer that worries me, I think he's done a good job on everything I've heard so far.

I simply did not like The Hunter and I'm afraid Mastodon has lost their edge. The two last albums have lacked the intensity, rawness and experimentation of the earlier stuff. And especially The Hunter is little else than straight up rock, nothing that hasn't been done before.

They say they implicite history on this but take it from whatever perspective, it is offensive as it discriminates (or better remind of massive genocide of ethnics rather than an even fight). The Minority of the Native Americans that got rotten out by the Native Settlers would still argue that this is very offensive in particular as it just shows an unarmed women praising food due to threat which is alone a no go for such things). Insert whatever if you don't feel offended, if you would be jewish or muslim you would riot if this was one of them these days. It is really not necessary to display such a disgrace of portrayed racism for a band as mastodon whether they think it's sarcastic or funny despite it showed partially controversial truth such as robbery and harm to life actions.
Insert whatever you like to whatever you hate and you'll find the answer why it is not appropriate to promote stuff, why to bash other cultures or groups just because of their origin. It wasn't for their actions or opinions, they just were in a place where conquerers took their freedom because those were seeking their "New Life in a New World". It did happen of course nobody is argueing on this but what has the band to do with it, it wasn't bound to a trusty statement or worthy opinion nor any logical educational aim. It was just the bands merch to sell and choosen motive of historical events. They could've gone with a rapture picture even. And seeing this with what happened on another aquation with the pedophile from Lost Prophets not long ago they could even have chosen such a design because it is historical accurate and they think it's funny or worth mentioning.
See how much people pull this into the prp comments already. Just because you don't feel offended doesn't mean it suits the general conduct, they messed up on the shirt, they could have taken out the gun, gave the settler a huge fat stomach and make the native unhealthy thin with bones on plate and would still show it less dramatized as it shows the process in a less martial but more enduring process.

Well said, MAVS. I'm not a Native American or anything, but you just have to acknowledge that something like that could be construed as racist to whoever the gun was pointed at.

It's interesting that they did this this year, while all shit the NFL is finally getting for the Washington Redskins. I mean talk Native American racism has been in the news here for months now.

That said, the shirt is historically accurate, as pointed out on theprp.

I love when bands evolve their sound, but Mastodon is to me a classic example where a band goes from having a completely unique sound, where they show a lot of originality, musicianship and not least variation, to a simpler sound where they start sounding like many other bands already do.

Ok those are both good responses. We'll always have Crack the Skye. That and Leviathan are still my 2 favorite albums by them, but I can see why people rag on The Hunter and have diminished hopes for Round The Sun in light of their news about no more screaming.

But for the most part I still enjoyed Hunter, and High Road has been stuck in my head for about a week. Any new Mastodon will always get me excited. (Admittedly I have said that about Dredg in the past, so...)

Some people will never learn anything. Beautiful text though.
Sounds about right. Good to see you round these parts again.

On topic, that LP looks beautiful. Love how Mastodon really seems to get creative and goes the extra mile with their artwork and collectibles. Doesn't seem like your usual, everyday re-issue.

I think this album was great

Anyone seeing them November 4th in Baltimore at Rams Head? I'll be there.

Brann Dailor from Mastodon showing appreciation for Deftones :
<quote>
7. Deftones – Around the Fur [1997]

When Deftones first erupted with Adrenaline – I wouldn’t even listen to them. I was adamant that they were just another in a long line of Korn imitators and this nu-metal scene that had popped up was something I had no interest in listening to. So I sorta wrote them off. Then one night I ended up at this party at a friend’s house and he’d put on Around the Fur – loud. So I sat down on the bed and just started listening to and falling in love with it – it's kinda dark, like ‘What the hell is this?’ He says Deftones. I’m thinking ‘Fuck!’ Oh man, I can’t deny this... so good.’ They’ve maintained that cool ever since. There’s so many different influences that they’ve somehow woven together – they’ve got this whole Cocteau Twins/4AD vibe coupled with super-heavy guitar. It works so well – from Chino’s voice to Abe’s drumming. His style’s so unique and he’s got all that groove. I love that band beyond belief; I’ll fanboy those guys to death every time I’m around them. They’re like ‘Okaaay, security – get this guy out of here.’
</quote>

The whole article is interesting anyway :

I can't bear the presumption of Mastodon fandom. Crack The Skye Lol. Mastodon plays metal for people who don't really like metal, and prog for people who don't really like prog. Crack The Skye is like a vegan milk. An inferior substitute for something the target audience, as well as a good percentage of the general public, finds repulsive in its original form.

Can we take a moment and talk about how underrated "The Hunter" is? I seriously love that album. I have a feeling that people hated on it because it was such a drastic change in sound from Crack the Skye.
It still kicks ass, though. It's more straightforward sludge, while still maintaining the psychedelic elements that Mastodon are known for.

Can I get some love?
Title: Re: Mastodon
Post by: Crazylegs on Mar 25, 2017, 01:21 PM
Honestly, i've probably only heard the album in its entirety once, and i went in to it already hating it.
The moment i heard "it's just the curl of the burl, that's just the way of the world" i thought fuck this.

Checking it out again now there are a few highlights (spectrelight is probably my favorite), but for me, The Hunter is where shit took a turn into something i'm just not that interested in. Actually in hindsight, that started on Crack the Skye.

I think my preferences in heavy music have kinda gone in the opposite direction of the evolution of Mastodon's sound.
Title: Re: Mastodon
Post by: bright lights, big city on Mar 25, 2017, 01:35 PM
And I would say that Crack the Skye is my favorite Mastodon album. Sorry Theis, I would still also say The Hunter is my least favorite. But songs like Stargasm, Spectrelight, and Creature Lives have grown on me when I've heard them on shuffle over the years.

I'm with Crazylegs on Curl of the Burl though, haha.
Title: Re: Mastodon
Post by: theis on Mar 26, 2017, 07:41 AM
Haha, fair enough. I agree, it doesn't hold a candle to the three albums before it, but I think it stands fine on its own. I like it more than Once More Round the Sun. Still haven't listened to Emperor of Sand.
Oh, and Curl of the Burl is one of my favorite songs on The Hunter ;)

Album rankings would probably look something like this:

Blood Mountain
Crack the Skye
Leviathan
The Hunter
Remission
Once More 'Round the Sun

Really digging the new album after a couple of listens. It's much more focused and coherent than OMRTS.
