*start rant*
I get really sick and tired of hearing everyone classify music they don't like as EMO. Emo is pretty much short for emotional.. and last I fucking looked.. most music is fucking emotional. I have scoured the internet on this issue... as it really strikes a nerve with me. Mostly because half of this board talks about "emo" music as if it's the plague. Well, here we go. I have found ON MANY pages... (go ahead and google yourself) many people calling Deftones "emo".
And let me go on with this list...
My Bloody Valentine
The Smiths
The Cure
Underoath
Bullet For My Valentine
From First to Last
Silverstein
Hawthorne Heights
The Used
Senses Fail
Thrice ------- Saw with Deftones
Thursday ------ Saw with Deftones
Every Time I Die
Three Days Grace
Atreyu
HIM
Coldplay
Brand New
Saves The Day
Dashboard Confessional
this is not the end of the list.. but all I care to keep typing....
Oh and were we all aware that Weezer apparently kicked off the Emo start?
http://www.mtv.com/bands/w/weezer/news_feature_102504/ (http://www.mtv.com/bands/w/weezer/news_feature_102504/)
UGH and Deftones had to do a Weezer cover.... *sigh* =o)
So, if I don't understand the lyrics.. ie... most of the death metal... does that mean that the lyrics aren't emotional? Or do you all just look and see if they are wearing tight pants.. or a scarf?
So.... I looked into what exactly makes music "emo"
Emo Music :
-To summarize, emo (short for "emotional") is a rock genre.
-Emo music started in the '80s. The vocals range from "normal singing ... to a kind of pleading howl to gut-wrenching screams.
-Typical lyrics "tend toward abstract poetry" and are usually difficult to decipher..
So if this is the case. Are Deftones "emo"? If they are.... do we really care? I mean, why do they have to be "classified" anyway. I mean.. You can classify bands as Indie, Punk, Pop, Hardcore, Rock... does "Emo" actually have to be a classification.. being that everyone is just adding whatever music they dislike to that category anyway! I saw in another thread.. Matchbox 20.. pushed into the Emo category... wowzaz.. I would have NEVER ever thought them to be "emo" I know I'll catch slack from this post and that's ok. But I am a woman, and a mom.. and I'm 32. Sometimes it's nice to listen to music that you can actually relate to, something that has a little feeling behind it....
So I'm asking you guys.... What exactly does "emo" mean to you... And what exactly do you "like/dislike" about it. I want to understand all this contorted bullshit. I mean, seriously. Dave Matthews Band being called Emo? lolz.
Just because you don't like a group... does NOT mean they are Emo. Fact.
*end rant*
you are such an emo :D
to be serious: i agree with you. "emo" is not a musical genre. all music is emotional, otherwise nobody wouldnt listen to it.
but some bands have a certain attitude that may be classified as "wannabe-evil-rock-mainstream-shit" or something, i dont know :(
Emo music is like pop-punk music and indie rock mixed together. Or at least they try hard to sound like it.
I disagree that Weezer started the whole emo thing. They sound nothing like the stuff I hear as classified being "emo". So nah Weezer didn't start anything.
Ya can't make up that kind of crazy. It's all in the MTV link.

Just so yannow. I do agree with you. My whole point of the post was...Too many times bands are classified as Emo, that should NOT be.
agreed. i find it hard to believe that every time i die is emo. who knows maybe cannibal corpse will soon be considered emo.
maybe we have to think that that was MTV classifying some of that...

Ahh. Okay, well now that I read, I can see where these "emo" bands get their influence. But what I can't stand about emo music is the voice and the instruments and how they are played.
But they still don't sound like the emo bands of today.
Besides I rarely tag music as it being emo or punk metal. I usually just say "they are a rock band".
Having a genre of music called emo is pretty ridiculous because it is such a vague form of describing the music. But according to people emo music sounds like pop punk so I guess it can somewhat describe their style of music. All bands are emotional. Deftones, Incubus, Metallica 50 Cent whatever. so why tag something as "emo". To sell something or to go with some trend or to hate the trend. Besides look at this.

I don't know if this has been posted before today but just proves how some people can be elitist assholes.
lol.. I'm really not suprised... as a large majority of people will just find any justification to be a dickface for the sake of being a dickface. I am a little disheartened to see a race treat others of the same race so disgustingly... over the way they dress. Stupid fuckers.
On the other hand I am glad to see people agree with me. I saw the band bashing thread... and I was quite disappointed at some of the "classifications" of certain bands.

dude, this is ridiculous
these kids are acting like they are fighting for political issues or something
this stupid behaviour is really making me sick..
I get this shit all the time... I played Catch Without Arms today at work and someone asked my friend who was playing and he turned round and said 'Some emo band' I think emo is now becoming the word where, if you don't like the music, it's emo... But I don't understand why Korn or Linkin Park aren't classified as emo? I bet if they had long black fringe going over their eyes and ears and wore skinny as fuck jeans, then they'd be classed as emo. How pathetic is that? How pathetic to be classed as an emo for the clothes you wear regardless of what music you listen to. Listen to what you want people, dress how you want and don't let any fuckers tell you otherwise...
Amen.
emo music was once cool. until it became to be about the clothing and not the music.
good "emo" bands include;
sunny day real estate
american football
christie front drive
mineral
etc.
FUCK the scene shit.
I barely read any of the comments here because the subject is so old and beat up, but yet there seems to be some jackasses who like to start shit and label people (not you, White Pwny, but people who are so pretentious they actually have the nerve to do so otherwise).
"Emo" was a culture that came about far before Weezer evolved. All Weezer did was bring the subject into popular culture because of:
1- The band's physical appearance, especially Rivers'
2- Pinkerton, because apparently there had never been an artist before who had written heart-felt, honest lyrics
3- MTV made the brilliant move to refer to Weezer as an "emo" band
I completely agree that everything in music is emotional, but to confuse the "emo" culture with anything is ridiculous. I just choose to ignore people when they mention emo; I gave up hope when a girl with whom I had class in high school referred to Fall Out Boy as "emo" and "punk rock." To me, that's just a disgrace of the innovative bands who helped progress emo and punk culture. Seriously, when did an entire lifestyle get boiled down to a sorry-ass haircut and something you buy from Hot Topic?
Fuck that shit and listen to your iPod.
out of all those bands i'm just surprised that Every Time I Die is somehow classified as EMO...
I didn't read through this thread, but I'll just say this: people on here complaining about emo are nuts considering Deftones have started using lots of emo influences in their music.

i don't care about the terminology. i think most of the "culture" involved with music today sucks. all music. not just one genre or subgenre. i like music. i listen to music i like. not emo or rap or nu-metal or r&b or dnb or punk rock but just good music. here's what i have to say to the people who listen to almost entirely one subgenre of music: the bands/artists you like suck. quit dressing like a fag.
whatever, im gonna watch some porn before i have to go to this study group thing.

emo wouldnt be a genre without the internet....good ol internet
you thought way too hard about this. Just because its technically "emotional" doesn't mean that whoever came up with the term meant it to be 100% literal. I pretty much agree with all the bands you listed (just because someone opened for deftones does not make them good) But come on now. You know an emo band when you hear one. And they suck my ass

EMO = shit rock/indie/punk bands who are full of guys sounding like whiny high school girls, worry about how they look way to much, and make trendy shit music. Not to mention how gay all these dudes are crying about girls and life. Grow some fucking balls. I can't stand dudes running around with vaginas making music. Its an assault on the ears.
Sreamo gives it an edge, but its hard to shake off the cheesyness of it all.
Unfortunatly, the media are trying to define all of this that ppl talk about, and HxC bands, other rock bands get lumped into being called emo.
How the fuck is Every Time I Die emo? thats laughable. They play HxC rock n roll and last I checked, don't sound like pansies when they sing.
and now the shit wave of music continues...if you recall, pop punk plauged the 90s until it turned into this "emo" sound. Now...it seems Dance Rock is the new wave, and its still full of emo tendancies ala Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco.
This is why warped tour sucks more and more every year, there's no real punk bands on it anymore. There's only a handfull on their list, and out of those, they're only playing a few dates...
I don't think half of the list is considered "bad" music. I just typed in what I found online that ppl categorized into "Emo" category. Hell I really like Thrice, Thursday, Every Time I Die.. and on and on.... I honestly don't give a fuck what people think about the music I like... That is already obvious... I just get pissed off about every single band that people don't like.. getting tagged "emo"... so my question was... What exactly is Emo.. and is it bad?

Hell yeah, true emo.
Here's what I think:
1. The emo argument is overdone. It was, and still is for a few bands, a musical style. It's nothing new. A lot of so called emo bands of today are playing post hardcore, pop punk, or some other derivative of punk and being called emo by misinformed ass hats because it's become a fashion and not a genre.
2. The "stop labeling music and enjoy" argument is for people who are either a. ashamed of what they listen to or b. devoid of any music history knowledge. I like to know what music influenced the music I listen to and finding genres and sub genres to place bands into is much more about learning than it is judging. Knowledge simply for the sake of knowledge mofos.
3. Nobody else has to like the music you do get over it.
4. There was way too much disgust in the responses about those videos. You have to understand that they are just going to be twice as whiny now that the jackasses who attacked them gave them more reason to be "emo". It's like calling a goth kid a freak. You're just pouring fuel on the fire.
5. We've all succumbed to trends. Hot Topic isn't a horrible store or the evil brains behind some teenage conspiracy they just cater to a younger crowd. I bought a sweet fuckin' Satyricon shirt there the other day. Some of the bands they promote have talent and are pretty bad ass but others are strictly cliche. Welcome to the music industry.
Done.
haha I get some of my Deftones stuff from Hot Topic! :)
hear, hear, oldgent.
Ok, i've read every single post in this thread. Because i care. Most of you say: 'people label music they don't like as emo' and you still think that emo is something bad, ridiculous, etc. No, it's not. At all. Maybe you just never met good emo? Or you're under tv influence?
i said it many times and i feel i must repeat it. Emo culture (pink-black!11 nation) has nothing to do with emo music, they even developed separately. That's why it's always weird when people try to find connection between cloths, haircuts and music these people play. So, emo music doesn't mean just emotional. There are a lot of things in definition of emo music. As you know, emo appeared as sub-genre of old hardcore music (when weezer members maybe didn't know each other). Just emotion isn't enough to call band emo. They also have some special things in music, not only lyrics.
That's why deftones and hundreds of other bands do not belong to emo genre, though they are pretty emotional.
One more thing. I am FOR detailed classification of music. I'm FOR using sub-genres and sub-sub-genres to describe music. It helps a lot to organize knowledge, opinions on music. I'm against calling all rock music just rock music. It's so wrong.
So, now emo is full, independent genre, which includes a lot of smaller genres (acoustic emo, mall emo, etc), want it or not. And i don't see anything bad in it.

100% agree.

the funny thing in relation to the emo argument is...ppl have this notion of what "Goths" are. 75% of what ppl call Goths are nothing close to it. Its like "you wear black, you're goth!" So now you have a large younger crowd who wear black, and because of how music has evolved since the mid 90's, they are whining overally dramatic emotional little shits that has the rest of the world calling them "emo goths" or whatever.
I can only wonder how many ppl that I didn't know in high school secretly called me goth because I wore all black all the time, with metal shirts and colored hair. When I was never into gothic shit, or had any other relation to it. Other than a friend of mine who was actually goth, into black metal, writings, art, the look, blah blah blah.
hilarity ensues.
there's too many bands that are ruining good music by being trendy, fashion oriented, involving a lot of fake attitudes, and trying to play some form of rock and labeling it punk, which to me is such a travesty.

Wtf. I'm down with marches and protests when it actually supports something worth people's attention But emo? What the fuck are they standing up for, wearing pink eye liner and black finger nail polish? That's ridiculous. Equality and respect is ideal but the reality is they're in high school and everyone only gives a shit about themselves. Part of growing up is learning to be yourself not forcing others to care.

being goth has nothing to do with listening to black metal. actually, the "old" goths pretty much despise metal in general.
Im a bit late on this, but who fucking cares what it called emo? Everyone has a dif. definition on it anyway.
For me emo is some of my fave bands, like Bright Eyes, Stars, Park Ave, Commander Venus, Cursive, Los Campesinos, Tokyo Police Club...
yea who cares
it just gives me big laughs when a clichee ugly nerd metal dude attacks emo.
this thread is not about the music but i have to mention this. every kid out there belongs to some trend or some scene in some way. even if you refuse to dress like a particular scene, you are in the scene of those whou refuse. often enough you end like a hippie then.
there is absolutely no special thing in the emo look for me.
True...trends are pretty much unavoidable either in music or fashion but that does'nt mean people can't mock the crap out of them for a laugh.
I mean, look at the 80's.
It's people who fail to be able to laugh at themselves or others and take offense that have the issue imo. When I was a metal kid wearing nothing but Metallica and Pantera shirts with black jeans and Chucks I got crap all the time but laughed it off and did'nt care.So did my goth, punk, skater, hip-hop, etc, etc mates.
The problem with emo's is they get so offended and defensive and it appears to be a trend who's main motto is "Life sucks and I'm depressed".
I mean, in admitted generalization, that is how they present themselves to the world.
Thats lol.
Anyway the term is WAY to thrown around these days which means it's pretty much dead and inaccurate 99% of the time anyway imo.

they all look emo!
haha yeah, the best part is when that "punk" kid is like "los emos están robando nuestra cultura!"
the whole issue lies in the fault of all of the little fuckin middle/high schoolers who think they know what the fuck they're talkin about. it's the same with punk and goth. they try to conform to this certain culture they think is sweet, but really just fuck it up and give those who actually know what it's about a bad name (mostly the bands that get wrongly labeled as a certain genre, usually by the same fuckin kids). then you get the bands that pander to the fakers, putting it in the spotlight nationwide. i dunno, i'd probably beat up those kids too, but i mean i like a lot of "emo" bands, it's really all about the cheesiness level like someone else said, for lack of a better word. it's all a bunch of stupidness.
