I'm starting up with an absolute classic.
Stevie Wonder - Innervisions (1973)
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_eCvZQMlpil4/SwXJ3IaePEI/AAAAAAAAAjg/8pZzydbKG1g/s400/stevie_wonder-innervisions-frontal.jpg) (http://www.multiupload.com/UFR4P09U20)
genre: soul/funk
Sounds like: Stevie Wonder
I'm well aware that this by no means is an unknown artist or band. I just figured that maybe a lot of people on here haven't heard it, considering the age of many users. I was lucky enough to find this in my dad's record collection when I was a little kid. So when I a couple of years ago bought it for my own collection and listened to it again after quite a few years, I fell in love with it all over again. Stevie's got such a good voice, and you can hear that he fucking radiates music. The whole album just flows so naturally, it's ridiculously funky at times, and at other times it's so mellow and beautiful. It's just composed so perfectly, and I find myself liking it more and more every time I listen to it. I hope there's some cats on here who will find an interest in this, cause i'm not kidding, it's one of the best albums ever.
My personal favorite track at the moment is "Don't you worry about a thing" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkBUx6Zn6mo) . "Too high" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8dK0iEzi1M) is a fucking beast too, and groovy as all hell.

I'm not sure i follow.
I LOVE that album!! I remember listening to that on vinyl when I was a little kid.

why is everyone so obsessed with posting albums by unknown or relatively unheard of bands? seems a bit lame if everyone is just trying to improve their hipster cred. with that said kudos to posting something well known but many people here may never have given a chance or really appreciated.

kudos indeed. i fall into that category of never really giving Stevie Wonder a real shot. good stuff.
Wow, glad to see something old being posted on this board. I've had thoughts of posting up some Funkadelic, The Meters, and so many others. Just figured no one would really care to listen.
listened to the stevie wonder album today twice. great vibes in it
absolutely.

In my opinion this is the best album any of the Smashing Pumpkins members have done outside of the good old Smashing Pumpkins. I don't really know what to say about it, but as a drummer i was naturally drawn to this project, Jimmy definitely is one of my favorite rock drummers. It's no dark side of the moon, but i find it very interesting. I recommend listening to streetcrawler, lullabye to children, or maybe Lokicat if you want some Billy Corgan action. It's definitely worth a listen, and if you're not a fan of Smashing Pumpkins, don't worry. It doesn't sound anything like them.

I just came across this today whilst surfing last.fm. I was checking for bands similar to The Mire, and this was the first band i clicked. I just fell in love with their sound instantly, really good sludge band reminiscent of mastodon and baroness at times. I recommend checking out the title track or "braille" if you just want a little taste (youtube link to agonist above).

Lokicat is seriously the best song by/with Billy Corgan, it's just irony that it isn't a Pumpkins song. Alright so might download that Stevie Wonder album.
last.fm recommended Latitudes to me at some point but it disappeared from recs page before I got around to it. I see now that last.fm was correct! *downloads*

I've been aware of this band for quite some time, but i never really got into them before. I decided to give this album a go last week though, and i fucking love it. To me this is just like a perfect film noir soundtrack. Really simplistic, and theres a red line through the whole album, like the same pulse and melody pretty much the whole way through. That may seem stupid and boring, but the feel of it is just so good. I could listen to this over and over for hours. I'd recommend lying down in your bed, concentrate on nothing else and just listen through this masterpiece. I think i might do so myself right now.

yeah. I got that last week too. It's brilliant.
just got Sunset Mission like two weeks ago, it's pretty sick! will try Black Earth too :D
Great choice.
Bohren is amazing.
Does any of you have a better rip of sunset mission and black earth. They sound so raspy on the rips i got. I've tried several different bitrates, but none have sounded any good really. I'm not downloading flac's cause i can't play them on itunes. ghey.
I think these are the rips I picked up:
Sunset Mission:

http://www.mediafire.com/?vzmiind3yit (http://www.mediafire.com/?vzmiind3yit)

http://www.mediafire.com/?jnnwz1ajdjj (http://www.mediafire.com/?jnnwz1ajdjj)
They're each broken up into two .rars but mediafire doesn't have any max download cap, just download them all at once and go eat a sammich.
Incidentally, the way I usually handle flac is to just download them and convert them with http://freac.en.softonic.com/download (http://freac.en.softonic.com/download) to 320 mp3. Only takes a couple minutes, plays in itunes, and still sounds great.
muchos gracias sir.

Kaizers Orchestra has been one of, if not the most successful band in Norway over the past decade since their release of this album. They have since distanced themselves a bit from the gypsy rock sound, but they still make wonderful albums. Ompa til du dør was their first full length release and is their best recieved album to date. This album is labeled as gypsy rock, but it doesn't sound anything like Gogol Bordello or any bands of the like, it's not that upbeat, rather melancholic at times, and has more of a rock sound. I've never been a hardcore fan of Kaizers really, but i've always loved this album, and i like most of the stuff they put out, so i thought I'd share. I know they've had some success in parts of europe, but i guess it may be new to some of you Americans. Give them a shot why don't you? I recommend trying the tracks 170, ompa til du dør, or bris if you're curious.

Sorry for the lack of activity lately. I'll try and post more albums in the future.

I don't know if this will interest anyone, but i've been a fan of eels for many years and it never seemed like any of you on here listened to them/him. I decided to put up one of the more recent albums. I have mixed feelings about most of the eels albums, I love so many of the songs, but some songs just seem silly to me, like Lilac Breeze on this album for example. But i think this is a really solid release, and songs like tremendous dynamite, the look you give that guy, and the longing are just wonderful.

From what i understand, this is somewhat of a cult classic. I hadn't heard of them until a few months ago, i was just cruising rateyourmusic.com and browsing through the top rated albums, and this one was at like 120 or something. I just decided to check it out, and it was pretty good. I'm not too fond of the spoken word parts, but other than that it's pretty much gold all the way through, i always put it on when i'm on long bus or train trips.

genre: folk, singer/songwriter
This is another post with an album most of you need no introduction to, but just in case you haven't already heard it, i thought i'd be nice and let you know that you should. I guess you could describe his music as minimalistic, melancholic, at times really heavy, not like rocking, but gloomy. He has a real soothing voice and his guitar playing is really unique. Already my favorite of the year, and i doubt that anything will top it. Only time will tell, but this is bad ass. This record was released not even a month ago. They've been flying under my radar until a few days ago, but i think they're pretty fresh on the scene. I watched a video of one of their live performances and was sold right away. They're quite unique due to the fact that their lead guitar is switched out with a tuba, which sounds ridiculous, but it's run through a lot of effects and stuff and it sounds fucking awesome. I hope you'll check them out and maybe get a hold of the vinyl release of this album. It sure as hell is on top of my wishlist for Christmas. My favorite track so far is another avenue.

I had to add this to my top albums of 2012, in 2013. Because it's just too awesome. It kept coming up in the best of the year lists on all sludge, stoner, doom pages i hang out on on facebook, so i thought it had to be good. And fuck me! is it ever. Rocks my socks off every time i put it on. And i've put it on quite a lot the last month or so.
See what they sound like on their bandcamp: http://norska.bandcamp.com/ (http://norska.bandcamp.com/) I think the tracks Amnesia and Cholera are probably the most instantly likeable. Allthough there's not a dull moment on this record.

Once again i upload something that all of you should've already heard, but just in case you haven't, now's a good time to catch up on some fucking legendary music. This is my absolute favorite album by Neil Young and also in my top 10 of all time. I was a latecomer to Neil Young's music myself and early on i just listened to Harvest and After the Gold Rush over and over (which i guess are the most popular albums), and i fucking fell in love with those two, but over time On the Beach has become the one i spin the most. I'm not uploading anything now, but i just got to let you know about this artist my friend showed me. I don't know if you're aware of him/them already, but Connan Mockasin is the bee's knees. I'd describe the sound as a pretty dreamy and psychedelic, but what do i know. Just check these clips out. I can't decide which of these songs is my favorite.

I just had to make a new post in my regular thread, because lately i've been in love with this album:
D'Angelo & the Vanguard - Black Messiah (2014)
D'Angelo and The Vanguard - Ain't That Easy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZoxdPGu_4E#ws)
You've probably seen it around. From what i've seen it's only gotten great reviews, and it's not without good reason. I didn't include it on my albums of the year list because i was pretty hesitant to listen to it (i always thought D'Angelo seemed quite the knob, and dismissed him as your average r'n'b artist, though i never listened to him), before recently when i decided that all this praise had to mean something. And it fucking does. This is now my definite favorite album from last year, man.
I can't quite explain what makes it so appealing. The instrumentation and production is so fucking tight, yet really organic. The opener (the video i posted on top here) is a perfect introduction to the whole thing i think. The slightly syncopated groove, the fucking ridiculous layered vocal harmonies, the dirty riff.
I don't know if a lot of you are into funk/soul stuff, but i'd advice you to give it a change even if you aren't.
BEST album of 2014! You can listen to it in it's entirety on youtube by the way.

It reminds me of like a combination of Intronaut and Mastodon... only more interesting than either of them! I'm so happy you showed me this. Ordered the vinyl already on Amazon Prime lol.

figured you'd like this
The first song wasn't to my liking at all, but things are looking up a few tunes into it. I hear parts oceansize ("principal features of the cult" at times sounds just like them), cult of luna, yob, mastodon, deftones. All sorts of shit i love. Sounds really good, but there's something i can't quite put my finger on that doesn't sit that well with me. They're trying a little too hard to rock, and it's a little overly elaborate for my taste at times. With some of these riffs these guys have, they should just allow them do the work.
Will be interested to hear more from them though.
So I did an image search on them and this came up...
(http://s32.postimg.org/r5mlwrn5t/image.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/r5mlwrn5t/)
They're officially my new obsession! Also, holy shit they're young as fuck!
totally unrelated, crazylegs, but i think i found you on facebook. by accident of course...
not a stalker. nope.
I feel honoured to be your stalkee. Did you learn anything interesting?
not really. it's pretty private and i'm also not a very good stalker. i get distracted all the time.
Steak Number Eight.
That's a great fucking name, haha! Diggin' the tunes too!
https://soundcloud.com/relapserecords/sets/true-widow-avvolgere
Shit, don't know if i'm gonna have time to listen to it properly today, but first thing after work tomorrow i'm dropping by the record store and picking that shit up. True Widow and Neurosis on the same day is just too much.
first world problems right there
true. I've listened to it now. Stoked! They don't stray far from their typical sound, but that sound is sweet as fuck!
How do you like it?
great stuff as always, there's not a single song i dislike. these guys don't need to put out diverse stuff cause nobody sounds like them anyway
playing the witcher 3 nowadays and To All that He Elong would fit perfectly on that soundtrack
i love this band and i love you for posting them here
agreed.
And yeah, i think it would fit in pretty nicely. I fucking hate that game though.
*Kisses*
Here's one i discovered recently
Andy Shauf - The Party (2016)
(https://kingsroadmerch.s3.amazonaws.com/images/us/2/8/6/28657_400x400.jpg) (https://www.sendspace.com/file/vjpqai)
genre: folk/pop
I saw this album at the number 1 spot on the top 10 of the year list from a guy working at my local record store. I'd never heard the name, so i thought i'd give it a go. I searched youtube and saw one of his music videos which was made by Chad Vangaalen (a big plus in my book) and fell in love with it instantly.
It's a pretty delicate, and really well composed album. It separates itself from the norm a tiny bit with a lot of interesting instrumentation with strings and clarinet and shit, without it ever becoming too elaborate. He leaves plenty of space for the music to breathe. It's sort of a concept album, i guess. All the songs are about different stages/people at a party.
Here's a taste:

I like the songs but I don't like the aesthetics of the album
a strong seven out of five
don't you mean a perfect 5/7?
I know what I mean

Listening to that ep now. Pretty cool.
I like the instrumental part of it but the vocal performance just isn't working for some reason
her voice is what drew me in
that feeling when she'll never whisper hoarsely in your ear

I'm starting up with an absolute classic.
Stevie Wonder - Innervisions (1973)

genre: soul/funk

What's your thoughts on Chelsea Wolfe, Penicks?
not too big a fan, sounds a bit too out there, but then again i'm extra picky when it comes to female singers
(https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Pho283gdVdw/WJra0_MUPJI/AAAAAAAANhQ/2TeAVBzmNFwpbOzVa1EYooDr2TSVdv2iQCLcB/s1600/Hymn-Perish-300x300.jpg)
So i mentioned this in the Stoner/Sludge/Doom thread. Perish is the debut album from Norwegian Sludge/Doom duo Hymn. I'm not gonna write a review or anything, but I highly reccomend you check it out if you're a fan of crushing riffs, desperate atmosphere, long walks on the beach, large cymbals, Yob, Beer, The Sopranos, and other good stuff.
You can find it on spotify, or streaming here: http://www.metalunderground.com/news/details.cfm?newsid=131548 (http://www.metalunderground.com/news/details.cfm?newsid=131548)
I will give atention to that.
you had me at Yob.
yeah, def some Yob comparisons. On its own though, the album is just amazing.
Glad you guys like it, man. I had a feeling you would.
I'm liking it more and more with every listen.
any cloakroom fans? been listening to them non-stop this summer, the three albums they've put out are absolutely great. this is their newest

reminds of combo between nothing and true widow
never heard of them, but they're definitely on my radar now
No
Anyone familiar with Årabrot? They're a little hard to categorize, but I like them best when they do kinda stripped down sludge/noise stuff. Examples:
