let's see...

1. john frusciante - red hot chili peppers / ataxia / solo - he's a fucking genius. he is one of the most passionate guitarists to walk the earth. his solo work is nothing short of brilliant.

2. jack white - the white stripes / the racounters - really really powerful solos. who else would've mixed blues and punk so well?

3. stephen carpenter - deftones - one of the most under-rated guitarists ever

4. kurt cobain - punk rock john lennon.

5. jimi hendrix - there was a time when i didn't like him so much. i was so naive... he did more with the guitar than anyone has so far.

6. thurston moore and lee ronaldo - sonic youth - very innovative guitarists, they've defined the seattle scene over the past two decades or so.

7. david gilmour and syd barrett - pink floyd / solo - acid rock! brilliant solos, brilliant textures. they've played with madness for so many years, way ahead of their time.

8. wes borland - limp bizkit / black light burns / big dumb face / eat the day - he gets a lot of shit just because he was in limp bizkit

9. buckethead - his solo stuff can get a little shreddy-boring, but his work with claypool is funkay! and i think he released 27 solo albums in 2007

10. adam jones - tool - he's a visionary. awesome riffs and he knows how to get a killer tone.

oh, favourite john frusciante albums... niandra lades and usually just a tshirt / to record only water for ten days

also, i don't know what people have against smile from the streets you hold. it's quite interesting imo. even if he only did it for the drug money.

i think he's yet to put out something crappy. and i don't think that's very probable...

I hope that Frusciante comes out with another solo album. He will have time too because RHCP is on hiatus now.

Layne Staley (Alice In Chains)

surely you meant Jerry Cantrell. Layne was an amazing singer, but his guitar skills were nothing spectacular.

I probably have more than 10 favorite guitarists... but I'll try to make a list.

Kendall Jones + John Bigham (Fishbone)
Kim Thayill + Chris Cornell (Soundgarden)
Dave Navarro
Jerry Cantrell
Kurt Cobain
Stone Gossard + Mike McCready (Pearl Jam)
Jim Martin (Faith No More)
Trey Spruance (Mr Bungle, Faith No More)
Billy Howerdell
Gared O'Donnell + Chuck French (Planes Mistaken For Stars)
David Gilmour
Greg Mackintosh (Paradise Lost)
Stephen Carpenter
Adam Jones
Jimmy Page
Mark Engles (Dredg)

oops, that's more than 10.
pray nightfall release me
then i could wander, wander to deep sleep

over the years i still dig corgan's style. He has this insane ability to be able to tweek anything from the tiniest riff to an entire song just right , it wordless but it still speaks. I still argue that solo on "Here is No Why" is the best solo of the 90s. but yea, mad props to BC
