I know the Oscars are a complete joke, and essentially a waste of time but I'm rather angry Fassbender didn't get any recognition for his performance in Shame. Hands down the best performance of the year. Ebert was right, though. The Academy doesn't want to honor a performance about a chronic masturbator.

I'm still a little confuzzled about Bridesmaids getting recognition. I enjoyed it, yes, but it was it really one of the best screenplays of the year? Probably not. I will give Melissa McCarthy the best supporting actress nod. She was pretty awesome in it. Goes to show to the Apatow gang that women do it better.

I love Max Von Sydow and glad he got some love from the Academy even though it was in one of the worst films of the year that--shock! Got nominated for Best Picture, which is just a fucking joke all in itself. Oh, and who ever thought Jonah Hill would EVER grab an Oscar nomination? I haven't seen Moneyball, but  it still amuses me he is a contender.

I've seen Moneyball, and it's Oscar-bait. It was a cool story in real life, but the film itself was just mediocre and nothing really special.

The only movie nominated for the main awards that I think deserved it was Midnight in Paris. Just give Woody Allen everything this year.

Also, why isn't the horse from War Horse nominated for best actor?

Because the Academy doesn't like horse faces.

bright lights, big city

no wonder I haven't seen Sarah Jessica Parker at the Oscars. Ever.

Probably the most boring list of nominees ever.

defskull

I guess Oscar voters didn't see 50/50? That movie/script/acting took a huge shit on Bridesmaids.

I've heard a lot of people say that 2011 wasn't a good year for movies, but that's not true. It's just that all the good ones aren't getting the recognition they deserve. I'll take a mediocre Cronenberg movie over most of these movies any day.

chick de la lynch

I felt the least 50/50 should have gotten was Best Screenplay. Joseph Gordon-Levitt's performance was nothing to sneeze at, either and that boy is overdue for a nomination. I think at the end of the day mixing comedy with a drama about cancer just went over the Academy's heads.

It seems like every year people say the same thing-- "There were no good films this year" but if we keep having things like the Oscars dictate what was actually good, then yeah there were no good films this year.

bright lights, big city

Well said. I thought 50/50, Drive, Ides of March, Hesher, Dragon Tattoo, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and even the Muppets were all better than anything nominated for best picture.

Meryl Streep had a bowel movement today. It's gaining some serious awards buzz.

chick de la lynch

Don't get me wrong, I love Meryl Streep but I heard The Iron Lady was a mediocre film and many critics thought it didn't really use her to its full advantage. But Streep is always Oscar bait, so no shock there she was nominated.

I LOVE your signature bright lights and my Corgis. <3
