I love his hi-hat work on those verses too.

Quote from: Draken on Aug 29, 2025, 06:03 PMOh hell no, Spell is not my favorite all time song, by far. What I meant is from the remaining albums on the list, there are no songs on them that has a better track to me.

Ooohhh, gotcha, gotcha...

But what about Cherry Waves, Combat... Kimdracula, Riviere, MOTM... so many!

All top tier songs imo

Draken

I've had about a week or more to really get into the album and I agree with a lot of what people here are saying, on both sides. I think I prefer Terry Date as producer. Like why did Nick tell Chino it was a good idea to sing like he's Tom Waites on DTB? Good song but that ruined it for me.

The whole album has this frenetic energy to it. It has no time to really breathe except on a song like ITAYATT, then it just gets going again. There are parts like on MOTM that I wished lasted longer, the slow part could've lingered a little more before going back in. I blame Nick for not making those choices.

The first half of the album is my favorite, then it gets a bit odd to me. Cut Hands is good but it feels like Deftones doing Deftones, and the ending is like "really!?? We're doing the same fucking ending as DE just not as good!?"

Overall I enjoy the album and accept that they are an evolved older band that peaked already in the 2000's but still produce some of the best music on the planet. So happy and grateful they're still doing it so thank you Chino and co for putting forth another album for our enjoyment. Steph, I hope you get your health in order and start getting serious again like said in the ZL interview.

We got another Deftones record y'all, it's good to be alive. Cheers

Yes, it's very cool.

Is locked club Abe's coolest drum work on the album?

I just love these longer well written reviews, even if I don't agree with everything in it.

I hated cXz on my first listen, now it's my favorite on the album.

The way the bridge kicks in is pure magic.

It's like driving in some mid 2000s cloudy sunset, rain about to start into the night, kind of vibe.

The mid 2000s I get from the guitar, along with MOTM some of Steph's best work in a while.

Absolutely beautiful track.

Locked club, cXz, and milk are tops for me.

Draken

Yea those are good tracks, I was really surprised I liked Locked Club. Idk, yk how when you read track titles before hearing the song and judge them lol? That's what I did but I really like that one.

Also, "cxz" the title sounds like "sexy" if you say it with a certain zest.

I am terrible at ranking the albums in the order I like them most, so I won't even try. Instead I'll just say that I'm quite very happy with how Private Music turned out, and express my thoughts on every individual track.

my mind is a mountain - A fine, hype opener, I like it, nothing bad with it but as a lead single it definitely left me wanting for more. A very okay track but I doubt it'll ever become a fav for me.

locked club - To me it sounds rather straightforward, you either like it or you don't, but what's funny is that when I heard it for the first time I kept thinking Chino's singing during the verses reminded me of another band, and I had to scratch my brain for a minute. The band I was thinking of was IDLES. I like it.

ecdysis - In a way it feels like a safe post-Chi era Deftones song, and I just like it for that. I dig the chorus, it's not the most unique stuff they put out there but I just enjoy it 100%. Reminds me of Ohms which is an album I also love so there you go.

infinite source - Probably the most love it or hate it song on the album I'd wager, it would have NEVER fit on one of the early albums from the 90s, but I like it a lot, I am not opposed to something that sounds more cheerful or cheeky, especially considering I like the post-Chi stuff almost as much as the earlier. It's just a good song, it's going to be divisive especially here, but it's great in its own right.

souvenir - Everytime I listen to this one I feel like it has yet to grow on me... It's fine but I just don't feel the same appreciation towards it as I do with most of the other tracks on this album. Maybe it'll click at one point, but so far it's kinda just there. Also unlike Pompeji on the previous record, the synth outro almost feels like it was just grafted there. Weird IMO.

cXz - A fine song, I would say it keeps growing on me, but I have little more to say about it than that at the moment.

i think about you all the time - A fine song too but it just kinda feels like I've heard it before... Koi No Yokan vibes off the charts. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing for me, but I find little to say about this track.

milk of the madonna - OH BOY. When I said my mind is a mountain left me wanting for more as a single, this is what I meant and then some, this song is a BANGER. It's likely my favorite off the new album, and might remain a classic should Deftones keep playing for years to come.

cut hands - That one took me aback in the best way possible, throughout my first listening session of the album I kept thinking you could hear their entire discography in it, but I didn't expect to be reminded of Adrenaline, this sounded like an Adrenaline song made today. Another one of my favs from the album.

~metal dream - Cool song but I have little to say about it, maybe it'll grow more onto me in time.

departing the body - Now this is special, because unlike the openers, I never really had a preferred Deftones album closer, but this one just might be it. It's on my top 3 on this album alongside milk of the madonna and cut hands, for sure. It just feels special to me, I love it. Hell if it's not the last thing I get to hear when I'm on my deathbed, I'm not dying.

I'm unsure if I like this album more than Ohms (I was shocked how much I loved and still love that album) but I am very happy about Private Music so making comparisons means little to me. But I am very happy about this new album.

Locked Club reminds me of the band Kowloon Walled City. Like the song 50's Dad

976-EVIL

Like Draken I've had a week with Private Music.

Well said dude. The coolest thing about the Record to me is it's the same sound but different. Most experimental Album in years at the same time. Steph always gravitates to the power chords admittedly. Abe continues to set the pace. Chino sober and crooning. Frank controlling the vibe.

Deftones doesn't change but is always evolving. The push and pull. Again it's the Same Sound but different. Feels like the Golden Age of Our Band?

Private Music has crept into Top 5 Territory for me in just 7 Days, lol.
One last Thing...You Should Beware the Content!!

Thank God that you........ love..... at all.
