Saw Silent Hill the other night, it was pretty good; complicated but much better than RE. The music in it is really good too.

Cool, I've always liked the music in the games too. Caught a short clip of the film on an advert and they had the tune that's in Silent Hill (the first one) and the end tune to Silent Hill 3! That's a cool song!

Yup, but his role wasnt enough to satisfy me.  ::) >:(

I wont go into further details because possibly someone here hasn't seen it and I hate it when people ruin it for me. But yea, if you've played the entire series of the video game and really got connected to the characters like I have.. I dont think it will impress much. I didn't find it great.. but Im sure if you're just wanting to watch a good horror movie with no ties.. its a good bet.

i havent played the games much so i wouldnt know (RE through and through haha!), maybe thats why im more satisfied. But the enemies looked fucking evil, that was really well done and really impressive. Still it was rather complex though and some things for me didn't get cleared up.

anyone fancy uploading the soundtrack? its grown on me more ;) fav movie soundtrack at the mo is Lost in Translation, some great tunes on there.

so i was thinking the other day about the fact movies were really great before sound came along, and then for a while, they were terrible. no one knew how to act and talk at the same time!! eventually things got better and people understood how to use sound and film at the same time

well...that is exactly how i feel about digital cinema. directors are paying way too much attention on shooting digitally and CGI and not paying enough attention to the script or acting. i watched Star Wars: the revenge of the sith yesterday and it was awful. not only are the loopholes in the script huge, but the acting is terrible. Lucas is a moron and he tries to make up for the fact that no one has really understood how to shoot a proper digital film yet by filling the frame with constant bullshit to distract the audience. it looks like a video game, not a movie...and in my opinion that's not a good thing.

sin city is the only thing i can think of which makes the best attempt at using the spectrum of digital formats. yet it still lacks in some areas.

collateral was cool shot digitally, but it probably would have looked better on film

we'll see how superman does, it's supposedly shot on some 4k camera, but will most likely be projected on 2k screens or transfered to 35mm which is even dumber.

so in 5 or 10 years we might actually have some good movies shot and projected digitally, but until someone figures out a way to make it a useful experience, then we're going to keep getting cool movies with shitty acting and storyline because some yahoo knows how to hold a camera but can't write for shit.

Good point.

I'm not holding my breath on the new Superman but I agree on the Star Wars front. The last 3 films were such a huge fuck up it really taints the Star Wars series as a whole and George Lucas should never have directed period.

I kind of view movies like music these days though. There's the business/marketing giant seemingly focused on making profit while pumping out films that are really just extended CGI video game intros (personally I found King Kong to be a let down too IMO) and then there are the "underground" films or films made with passion and the motivation of a purely good script.

I guess personally it seems the line between the two has thickened with the intergration of big budget CGI and a good script seemingly becoming rarer by the year.

yep. post-production in the digital format has been a huge success, and furthermore, is something that has been taken with stride. now we must embark on the transition to shoot digitally, which is much more of a problem than it sounds. sure it's cheaper, but if not done correctly, it looks like shit.

i also learned today that an average 35mm print can be put in the archives and last without any modifications for about 100 years. a digital disc....15 tops before it starts to decay. so what are film students going to study in 50 years when all the digital films have been eliminated?

fireflyry

Good question.

I guess it strikes parallels with the advent of digital technology in audio. With a $1000-3000(NZD) PC and Pro-Tools anyone can make an album but is that freedom detrimental to overall quality and substance?

The same could be said for audio storage and history although digital is almost instantly transferable so even after 10 years it only takes a few minutes to make another copy which is'nt really applicable with older film is it?I would assume most older films are already on a digital medium especially when used for teaching/research purposes.

Jerry_Curls

Just came back from watching LA's last showing of Drawing Restraint 9...

All I can say is that it is one of the weirdest movies I've ever. If you don't like silence, don't watch this movie.
..Yeah don't go there,

I let you get to me

yeah yeah.

fireflyry

Sounds interesting not to mention intriguing.

Jerry_Curls

Eh, I liked it for what it was ( a piece of art) but not as a movie with storyline, plots, characters, etc.

So it's all visual? No script at all?

BigDave

did anyone else feel that silent hill was just a shoddy attempt at the whicker man?

black coffee

finally got to watch Collateral yesterday. you can dislike Tom Cruise for being a dick, but he's a good actor. great movie, i recommend it. the scene with "shadow of the sun" of audioslave playing in the background and the wolf in los angeles walking around was stunning, i also like the perspective, they're using some kind of nightvision camera in the whole movie.

Azwethinkweiz

^ finally some appreciation for that movie. One of my favorites. Michael Mann is such a great director.

The cinematography is excellent.

Azwethinkweiz

Just watched Domino.

That movie fucking SUCKED!
