this might already be a thread, but i couldn't find it, so name your favorites and you can go by band if they come together such as johnny greenwood and ed obrien of radiohead.  if you want you can also put why you like each of them

mine are (currently):
john frusciante (rhcp) - i like his leads and his emotional input
jimmy page (led zeppelin) - his style and fusion of different genres, and his leads
luther dickinson (north mississippi allstars) - i just saw him last week for free in knoxville, and he fucking blew my mind he can solo like no one's business
Billy Howerdell (apc) - good riffs and textures, i haven't heard ashes divide, but i liked his playing on 13th step the most
Adam Jones (tool) - no one can fuck with the jambi riffs, he's such a good artist both musically and visually
johnny greenwood & ed o'brien (radiohead) - these guys are just pioneers of sound
josh homme (queens of the stone age) - riff master
todd wilkinson & chino(team sleep) - i see them as followers of johnny and ed, they just have a good style, and they go so well with zach hill
Tom Morello (ratm) - hip hop and metal go together quite nicely
Dan Auerbach (black keys) - roots blues

here goes.

1. Allan Holdsworth - Unique style of fusion jazz that's beyond everything.
2. Jimi Hendrix  - What would any top 10 be without Hendrix? Innovative and ground-breaking. R.I.P.
3. Eric Clapton (Cream, Derek & The Dominos, Solo) - No one brings blues and rock together as smoothly as Clapton.
4. Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) - The king of classic rock. No one has (or ever will) write as many memorable riffs as he has.
5. Pete Townshend (The Who)
6. John Petrucci (Dream Theater)
7. Randy Rhoads (Ozzy Osbourne) - Fairly underrated. Watch some live videos or listen to "Blizzard of Ozz" and you'll see. R.I.P.
8. Robert Fripp (King Crimson) - Extremely technical, but very subtle. Covers every inch of the fretboard and you don't even notice.
9. Alex Lifeson (Rush)
10. David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)

My favorite guitarist of ALL time has got to be Kevin Shields-MBV, he's a damn genius
Of course Jimmy Page
Steph Carpenter
Tom Morello
Todd Wilkinson
Ed Obrien
Flea
Brad laner
Jimmy Hendrix
Geez, tha list could go on but I'm trying to think of ones that arent obvious

But yeah, Kevin Shields is my favorite- because his melodies and the distortion, I think he was so influencial to many others after him.  I just love his sound.

Word. Honestly, I think he is the best guitarist in the world IMO. He is the most perfect guitarist. His tone like you said is flawless, he is fast, has some pretty weird time signatures, his solo's actually have emotion and feeling and they are beautiful. No one kicks more ass than JP.
