chino howling about how "there's nobody home" over and over is peak deftones.  so many ways of interpreting that phrase.  that's a not a line you write; it's something that comes out of you.

edit: to elaborate on how it could be interpreted:
  • that panic as a kid when you get home from school/sports, only to find that your parents aren't home and you don't know why
  • sad feeling when being on tour to come home and see your fam has kept themselves busy with other obligations
  • a twist on "lights are on, but no one's home" - perhaps critiques that chino took to heart that were said about him during dark days
  • just a cool phrase that is somewhat nostalgic, cryptic, moving, and open to interpretation

It was released today. He's got some messages going back-and-forth between buyers and sellers on this and it gets nasty also. It's the first I've seen it. I've been hearing about it, but he posted it in the video. This shit is wild. I'm still watching by the way.
It looks like the original buyer and seller going back-and-forth and the buyer gets a stern warning. People I've never heard of
That video added nothing new.  And it was hilariously edited.

Quote from: Far away on Jun 29, 2026, 03:28 PMI listened to Melanie bc we had a live version laying around for a long ass time... I remember thinking back then it was a banger. Even tho this version is unfinished... yup, still a fucking banger.
So dope. I put it up there in my top 10.... It's classic elite Deftones material. that one could sit on adrenaline or around the fur and fit

Its not even bc its heavy, I like their heavy shit, its just so visceral. Also, loved the outro.

I honestly have no idea, lol. Maybe... ? Knowing myself, it could be true.  :D

Visceral, yes! I like the way he sings "is it true".  And that "scatting" style I loved and feel like he doesn't use like this anymore.  The live versions that we heard I have always heard like a ringing sound coming from Frank during the last verse of the song I think but yeah, it was toward the end and it sounded great like it was naturally in the song. Maybe they just did it live because they do tend to change things live sometimes but it seems weird to do that with a song that hasn't been released yet. Did anybody else hear that? It's not on this Eros leaked version. I guess I'll go look at the date Melanie was recorded and look at the dates of those live debuts. But I'm guessing Melanie was recorded in January 2009 but was played in 08

Anybody have any ideas why the version of smile that Chino gave us sounds so much more compressed or why the Eros leaked version sounds better? Maybe there was multiple recordings or whatever but for them to not go back in there and work on anything I just wonder.

It was New for me. I wasn't here for it and I'm not on Reddit whatsoever. I check in here every once in a while and lurk and talk shit with everyone when there's a new record or something to talk about. I knew there was a bunch of drama going on with the seller and probably still is so I'm just trying to get in the loop. So what exactly was edited? Nocturne's video or that exchange ?

My guess is he has likely made so many songs with so many different takes and different mixes throughout his 30+ year career that he just forgot about this version. The one he leaked was maybe the first one he found in his files, quick listen, "that works", upload.

Anyone experimenting with the track listing?

Biggest thing I've done is put Briana between Dallas and Margot (inspired by the Caliban mix sent earlier). I feel like everything flows great, even before doing that; but Diamond is the optimal closing track.

Imagining it like a vinyl record, Briana would close the a-side, with Margot beginning the b-side.

I've just done a Chi OverEnhanced mix version of the record, in case anybody feels like DM'ing me

It's not focused on being a great listening experience at all, but it overenhances and makes Chi's contributions quite obvious.

I'm glad that little adjustment to the sequencing worked for you. I've played around with "Electra" in different spots, as well, but I just keep coming back to the original tracklist that leaked, only with "Brianna" between "Dallas" and "Margot."

NOTE: If I already sent you my remix/master, revisit and redownload the link you were initially sent by me. I updated the .zip to a v2 designation.

In v2, I made a few changes to restore some dynamics to Chino's vocals across a few tracks, as well as a few other small mixing adjustments (Frank and Abe in "Candy", for example). But the big change was in the mastering. My original remix was mastered to approx. -12 LUFS, which is roughly where the original demos were sitting. That created a fairly dynamic listening experience, because loudness wasn't the goal. But I heard back from a few of you that you thought the listening experience was too quiet on my mix, so I mastered v2 to approx. -9 LUFS, which is somewhere around what you'd experience from 'Saturday Night Wrist' or 'Diamond Eyes'. It squashes some of the dynamism of the original mastering job, but it definitely is a better, more consistent listen next to other Deftones albums. I also updated the album art, inspired by the "Ohms" music video.
