Weird thing is, even though Adrenaline is at #8, I still love that record. Gore and SNW, just some stuff.

Nice ranking!
Fuck, I just tried to do the same, and it's hard. My ranking before Private Music was pretty much the same as yours, and now the first six got the same
Think, at the moment, it'd be like this for me;

1. Around The Fur
2. Deftones
3. White Pony
4. Diamond Eyes
5. Private Music
6. Ohms
7. Gore
8. Adrenaline
9. Koi No Yokan
10. Saturday Night Wrist

I'm curious, when you guys rank the albums, do you go with an appreciation for the album as a whole (production quality, artwork, overall vibe) or do you count which one has the most good tracks and it's just an overall sum?

In other words, if one album had 5 gems but also 7 mediocre songs, and another had 12 good songs but nothing extraordinary, would you still place the latter as higher in the ranking?

I usually go by how many songs in the record I like, production as well. For instance, we all know Adrenaline is really raw and shit, but I still dig it, a lot. Its kinda low ranked in my list because the other ones are just better overall, not bc I dislike Adrenaline. Artwork is not a deal breaker for me, altho if its cool, thats a plus.

2nd part, I'd rather have a song that truly makes me go nuts than an entire record of good, but not "holy shit this is amazing". I can deal with 7 "ok" songs, as long as theres like 2 or 3 that blows me away.

I dont care that much for SNW, but Combat, Kimdracula and Rivière have that effect on me. So does Beware (at least the version I watched back in 2007, not a fan of the one in the record).

Good one.
For me it's a combination of songs I like and overal feel, and with that last part, how the record as a whole affected me.
Around The Fur will always be number one, because it opened so, so many doors for me...to appreciating music, art, to new friends, new idea, to a new approach on life really (ie; do what you like, walk one's own path)

I'm shocked at how low SNW is on all these lists!

Quote from: endstand on Aug 23, 2025, 07:49 PMAnyone has a feeling the song "cut hands" is about situation with Sergio?

That's an odd take, if anything, the song is about us(the fans or rather specifically his haters). I feel like there's been a song like that in every album since awhile, for ex. TLID, Doomed User, Poltergeist, Prince.

Idk, when I listen to some of the lyrics I get the feeling he's talking to his critics.

Same. Great record, and a blueprint for the sound they shaped in the decades since!

A very atmospheric and moody album and also their only with an instrumental track.

I suppose it depends on what flavor Deftones you prefer. It leans on a less "heavy", more shoegazey side to them.

I thought the sales would be much higher. Guess the tik tok crowd prefers streaming.

In a way over the course, the fanbase will be left with true fans. God bless u tik tok either way.

as a younger fan, physical music is nice but not a lot of folks my age have a record player for example. i know maybe one person with a record player and i haven't spoken to her in a hot minute. i was very lucky to grow up with an uncle with a huge vinyl collection (not to mention cassette tapes and CDs) who would go out of his way to buy rare music from discogs and the like to rip it for youtube...but that also meant every other day, his room would stink like glue for at least an hour as he tried to clean said vinyls. it kinda sucks that streaming doesn't really convert well unless you're getting millions of streams (which deftones thankfully is).
i hope she comes

it doesn't sound like any known song. might be a bonus track or something like that for PM

was the beginning video any different from what they already showed on there the first time around (i already saw the post saying the audio was most likely a slowed version of cut hands)? i missed the encore
i hope she comes

Adrenaline is their debut album and it's what got them started, it's part of the original trifecta of albums before their 'dark days". That's why I ranked it high, it's a solid album that delivers exactly what the title implies.

S/T is when they were having personal and professional struggles but it's my personal favorite, so I would have put it on top but imo WP is their best record. ATF, I don't think that really should be a debate but it's subjective so whatever.

DE is a significant moment in their catalog, it showed how they could pull together and make a great record amidst all that was going on at the time. The guys really stepped up and created a great album with a reinvigorated sound that I never would have imagined they could pull off. I can listen start to finish.

Ohms came out on my birthday when I thought the world was ending ("We're all going to die now, but thank you God for the present?") Nothing on the rest of their discography tops Spell of Mathematics, top tier song.

Private Music I have yet to fully digest but it does not outrank any of the above albums. It's just like my opinion, man.

KNY is not a bad album it's just weaker than the others for me. Poltergeist is pure Deftones energy, but the other songs started sounding generic to me.

SNW Not a bad album either, it's just weaker than their other material. Even the band wasn't that proud of it and admitted it went through production hell, and it shows. Some good songs on it though.

Gore .... don't like this record and it's the only Deftones record I never listen to. Having said that, a bad Deftones record is still better than most other music.

Im not a younger fan but Im exactly in this situation. I used to have an LP player but its been broken for a while now and I never bothered to fix it. No cd players either. I just listen to stuff online nowdays. I should probable buy a new LP player.

Weird thing is, I still have winamp installed on my pc to this day... lmao. I got tons of .flac shit from back in the day.

The Spell Of Mathematics is your all time favorite of the band?
Good evening... and welcome to the white pony

RikshawHoward

That's wild to me, BUT I can definitely understand how a certain song can hit you and leave a big impression. I think Deftones especially have that effect on people.

Draken

Oh hell no, Spell is not my favorite all time song, by far. What I meant is from the remaining albums on the list, there are no songs on them that has a better track to me.

Draken

I knew I should've clarified that when I wrote it. I think the rest of the albums have some damn fine songs on them but for me nothing that tops Spell. Now all the albums above that do have songs that to me are their best.

Ooohhh, gotcha, gotcha...

But what about Cherry Waves, Combat... Kimdracula, Riviere, MOTM... so many!

Yeah Spell is next level.  Peak songwriting.

Inkblades

I'm having trouble ranking the albums outside of ATF, WP and S/T always being the top three for me.

Album sales aren't what they were back in the day - the whole industry changed. I'd love to have seen them get #1, but 75K for a thirty year old band in 2025 is still really impressive.
