I dig cXz but that first riff section sounds a little brittle with everything going on in one space (almost mono sounding?) before it opens up to how the rest of the album typically sounds.

Probably a conscious choice but gotta get my head around that one. That's what I noticed anyways.

quick review and track by track rundown after listening the album like 15 times

Its good, easily their best since DE. Some great moments but also filler. I know Steph is pretty lazy these days with riffs but jeez. Highlight is easily Chino's vocals. He is really using those 7ths and 9ths in his vocal melodies and they sound great. The whole album has a noticeable shoegaze influence

Mountain: I can't believe that the album opens with such a boring song. Only thing saving this song is Chino's vocals and even then I'm just waiting for the song to end

Locked club: Verses are super fun, the chorus feels out of place. There is not a lot of dynamics in the song but its fine

eclysis: good song, the vocal melody in the bridge thats in major is nice touch

infinite source: yea its super poppy and you were able to guess the chorus vocal melody before it even started but I like it. Love the verses with that single maj7 chord. Chino's vocals in the bridge remind me of Morrissey but I can't remember what song

souvenir: verses remind me of Team Sleep which I love. The whole song is good. I could go without the synth interlude in the end but that's just me

cXz: best song in the album. There's a sense of urgency that is not really found in any of the other songs on the album (apart from maybe Madonna). I had to skip back to the chorus like 5 times when I first heard the vocal melody, incredible. The song is pretty straight forward so I get why folks might not like it

I think about you all the time: This is just a poor man's sextape I'm sorry. When I first heard Chino talk about this song in the Apple interview I got kinda pessimistic already. Might be the first (and only) skip on the album

Madonna: great song and great energy, glad that it was single which means the band is going to play it live often

cut hands: great song, reminds me of cmnd/ctrl but with better chorus and bridge. Panic chords in the end are fun, wish the band would use those kinds things more in their music

metal dream: I like the verses idk why. The chorus is also great. The song is pretty straight forward which is fine

departing the body: good song and a great closer. One of their better closers actually

yea its not white pony, but its not trying to be. Going to be listening this album probably the whole fall.

Good review, more down to earth.
Good evening... and welcome to the white pony

Moana91

To anyone with a physical copy, is Lance or anyone extra listed on the credits?
Good evening... and welcome to the white pony

Moana91

Also, was there talk about an alternative version of milk of the madonna being streamed with Chino's voice on a lower pitch or something like that?
Good evening... and welcome to the white pony

whats up fuckers, assuming u never seen a mexican yoshi before?

after a couple of listens of the new record, im happy to say its very, very good.they still got it.
just like atf and s/t it really picks up in the second half of the record.
the first four songs feel like a way to lure in new fans but that's perfectly fine.
everyone sounds great on the record it, everyone - inlc.fred & nick

best to worse:

1) cut hands: a 10/10 song that has everything i love with deftones. love the firestarter/prodigy/mosqito sounds in the bridge
2) milk of the madonna: great somewhat generic sounding song, but deftones make it awesome.single notes by stef sounds like cant even breathe, although cant even breathe are power chords
3) departing the body: haunting beautiful closer. most down pitch chino i've ever heard in a pure defones song.the beginning reminds me of chino in their japan cover "ghost"
4) cxz: love the chord in the verse, cool stef song altogheter
5) souvenir: lovley chorus, here is where the record gets going for real
6  locked club: awesome spoken word stuff by chino, reminded me with "all hells breaking loose" by kiss
7  mmiam: swerve city sounding/ we're back again/ intro to the album - i dig it
8) infinite source: maybe the poppiest i've ever heard them, but they get away with it
9) metal dream: filler vibes but i like it, a little weird fever dream esque
10)itayatt: sounds like a closer to a team sleep album, i like it though.typical chino song
11) ecdysis: start out great with the 90ies sounding effects like curve or kidney thieves, awesome groovy bass, but i just cant stand the synths on the chorus, only let down on the album: those synths in the chourus. i hope they will gow on me

overall a solid 8/10 record, possibly the best effort since self titled back in 2003.

see you in five years!

The livestream Thursday night, Madonna was slowed down a few bpm's.. not sure why but it was a bit slower.

I do find it interesting that cXz, one of the songs on here that sounds the most like old school Deftones (dark, dissonant, tension-filled), is one a lot of people are "ehhh" on, while infinite source, the song that sounds the least like old school Deftones and more like a pop-punk song, is the one I've seen praised the most. I'm not trying to infer anything here! Just find it interesting. It's almost like people like bright, happy sounding songs or somethin'.

from_musings

Obviously new younger fans, unexperienced of life (i.e adorable fools.)When life hits hard and has pushed them down in their shoes, they will find comfort and understanding in cxz, just give them some time  :)

Regarding Cxz, i backlogged a bit in the thread, someone said it only had two parts. Thats not true. It goes :
verse / chourus / verse / chourus / paus-break
But after the short break its:
verse / BRIDGE/  Paus-break / verse chords BUT WITH CHOURUS MELODIES. Thats an insanely cool way to end a song

RikshawHoward

Yeah, there's a lot going on there. Lyrically it's my favorite so far too.

Doofaes

I saw them in Vancouver last night - killer show. They played my mind is a mountain, infinite source, and milk of the madonna off the new album. All three were great live and fit in the setlist with all their other hits. Inifnite Source is especially groovy in the live setting. I was pleasantly surprised.

And Steph was there! (I was worried he wouldn't come to Canada...)
I might write a more detailed review in the other thread if I get the time...

It's fucking amazing how fast every Deftones album just grows on you. I didn't really care for Infinite Source and Locked Club at first 2 listens now all of a sudden I'm LOVE with them. 😩

Infinite just has this warm summertime wholesome uplifting feel to it. Like a big hug. While Locked is groovy as FUCK and has some sick Prodigy vibes. Didn't like the spoken word stuff at first too but now i'm cool with it.

Still can't get in to get in to cXz tho..

Anyone has a feeling the song "cut hands" is about situation with Sergio?

i actually waited until release day to listen to the final 9 songs, since the leak was just 3 days before hand. that is the first time i've waited since saving 6 songs for white pony's release. ATF i got after it was out for 7 months, and i got adrenaline in late dec 1995, a few months after i recorded the 7 words video(was a huge fan from that point. i was 16, now 46. 30 years a fan). but anyway, yea after only 2 full listens i'm not very familiar with it yet, but it is really good, as per usual. but this one seems a little better than the past few. i really like that fire starter sounding sample in cut hands. milk of the madonna is a major standout track as well. also the video for infinite source is among their best ever. all the visualizers on youtube are really good. i had to listen to it for the first time using them, because my cd didn't show up. but that worked out well, cause they really added to the experience

976-EVIL

Looks like aside from the 3 new tracks they threw Cherry Waves, Entombed and Engine #9 back on the setlist last night.
Wow!
One last Thing...You Should Beware the Content!!

Thank God that you........ love..... at all.

That's wild man those synths on the chorus of Ecdysis are one of my favorite parts of the record! Haha

Once again, this record SLAPS. I have many of the songs rated a 9 or 10/10. One of their best in my opinion, but yet again everyone has their own opinions!

Quote from: WhitePwny on Aug 22, 2025, 09:28 PMHappy to see some love for cXz in some places as it seemed like it was being treated like the black sheep of the album early on. Dig that one.

Also saw fantano seemed to enjoy locked club and ecdysis on his stream today which is cool I guess.

Who gives a shit what Fantano thinks?

Apparently, a lot of people. They keep mentioning him...go figure.

Yeah, it's the world we live in I guess. Did anyone watch "Nocturne's" reaction to the record? I believe it was a first time face reveal as well. Black dude who loves Deftones. I say that because I never would have guessed not that it matters. But I always try to put a face with a voice I've heard over and over and that I'm interested in and this time I was like wow in a good way. He was blown away by the record as am I. Pretty cool shit and I can't wait to watch his video on the record like he has done for so many others.

Holy shit! You dig the record? And I think you might be the only person in the know that I know of that rates it that high? I really do think it has the potential of being top-tier with time. Right now it's the only piece of music I'm even listening to outside of some old M83 stuff I haven't heard or haven't heard in a while and some MGMT stuff that my daughter who is young is starting to get into and I'm remembering how much I loved that years ago. Electronic music seems to be the thing in my life around me with others. Nothing new to me, but it has been brought back to me ... also cool that they brought in a lot of electronics in this record I guess more so than usual? Not a musician. But this new record is something else I don't even know what to say. I just remember you back in the day being hard to please and I don't mean that to be a dick. It's actually refreshing and great to hear that you like the record! Fuck, yeah and cheers. Are you still trying to piss the shit off of the porcelain? Always liked that
