It doesn't top any of the Chi albums for me yet, but it's certainly in the conversation.

I really love metal dream. It absolutely sores! I think the last 10 minutes of the record is really incredible.

I was kind of funny on milk of the Madonna. That one did not catch me right away. I know most of you guys really were excited about that one immediately but for me, it was definitely a grower. Now I absolutely love it. It's been stuck in my head all week.

I just think they made a really solid and straightforward bad ass record. Nothing too out of the ordinary for them and the songs are pretty short for the most part and very precise. It's a no bullshit record in my opinion. I really dig it. And Chino sounds amazing.

And at their age, I don't think they need to be taking that any chances on records in their 50s! Just happy that they are making music and still enjoying being together. I also think Fred did a great job on this record. I hope he joins the band permanently. And I hope I get to experience another Deftones record One more time.

Hey, just a quick question - Is Infinite Source officially the 3rd single? Since it got a video and such, but I didn't see anything related to a new single

Ok, so I appreciate what phil is saying, haven't agreed with 100% of what he's said but he's right about Terry Date.

My take on things is that you have the classic 4. S/T will forever be my favourite because where the casuals were let down by the lack of obvious sex songs and hits and "experimentation" after White Pony, to me S/T was the band at their most vulnerable. It's musically simple, stripped down, and just honest.

SNW for me is the nadir of their career, because as we all know, Chino goes off to do Team Sleep, the band record the Ezrin demos and the B Sides get released to give everyone something to do. By the time they get around to SNW, the whole thing feels like a crisis of identity where they just plain don't want to be Deftones, and instead try as many different styles and accessible songs as they can. The whole thing is summed up by Annie Hardy's melted IQ ad-lib that contradicts itself on Pink Cellphone, and the clusterfuck is complete.

When it came to DE, I wasn't a fan the way many were. Don't get me wrong, I have a strong time and place association with that album, more so than most of the others (it's the streets of Newcastle UK), but straight away the title track's riffs and chorus felt like it was trying to fit in with whatever lesser metal bands had become at the time. I figured it was more the songwriting, and didn't really blame production, but it's true in hindsight. I love This Place Is Death, it's a top 10 for me but that album is definitely reaching for mainstream a little harder in a post-SNW landscape. I also gave a lot of mental space to the band for this being in the midst of Chi's coma.

I like Koi but I remarked at the time that it was VERY safe, songwriting wise. Poltergeist is a fucking banger but it's a very stable album.

I forgive Gore more than most. Again, anything after SNW felt like an improvement even if it lacked the je ne sais quoi that is basically that atmosphere phil is talking about. I agree with Rikshaw's takes on this album, fellow cXz lover here but strongly disagree about (L)MIRL, which is that album's triumph and it gets better in the climax.

Ohms for me is all about Genesis and Pompeji. The bridge of Genesis "We're everywhere" is the first time post S/T that I felt HOME. I well up at that part because they came back. I agree that the verse of Pompeji is not matched by its post Doomed User chorus, but the mood of the verse is instant classic. Ohms does have some songwriting issues I'm not wild on. Always seems to be one track I actively dislike and with Ohms it's Error. Other tracks like Headless are just kind of there.

So post S/T, I had my heart broken by SNW, and everything has been a small climb back up from the bottom since, some bangers, generally stable overall, but I can absolutely see the difference between Terry fathering their true identities and the rest being production-minded, reception minded first.

I mean, I like PM a lot, but I tested it on my wife and when Infinite Source kicked in she was like "Is this Avril Lavigne?".

If there's a sentiment that the "times have changed" and people are into different shit now, then I don't agree. I don't see why someone with taste shouldn't be able to listen to their older stuff and not get into it. It hasn't dated  really, outside of a few things on Adrenaline.

I'd also be lying if I said that I didn't wish that more of the album brought the darkness of Locked Club and cXz because that's who these guys are, whether they're 50 and happy or not.

RikshawHoward

Well said. If I'm honest I've had a somewhat similar trajectory.

I think a lot of it is just younger people who just got into deftones or are more casual fans. Never had a Deftones album cycle and prob mainly like the TikTok tracks.  This album was def made for them.

You Deftones gatekeepers are annoying ASF.  Your mind was made up on this album before it ever came up because you're upset they're not your little secret gem anymore.

Also, some of their most popular songs on tik tok are from SNW, and that albumand S/T widely considered their worse until Gore. These guy's are in their 50s and aren't pissed off anymore, so you aren't getting another ATF.

Nick has produced 3 of their best albums that are also actually cohesive.  SNW is a mess in that regard

SNW was an extreme low point for the band, while Nick got to record them when they were at their most focused.

In any case why are you so upset? You love the album, but some fans don't. Every fanbase has this because people connect with bands at different points in their career. No one is gatekeeping anything. You can still love the new stuff while others don't.

I'm not upset, but making some stupid comment saying this album was made for the new fans is some stupid shit, rightfully deserves to be called out.

It's fine to not like the album, it's not fine to talk out of your ass and say this album is lazy and for the tik tok kids

Yeah you seem pretty upset.

No, I just think you're a moron, Phil, and think morons deserve to be called out on their stupidity.  Especially ones that have egos like you

It's slowly becoming one of my favourite albums. I try not to overthink stuff these days (not always easy!) and try to just go with how much it grabs me - and it has, big time.

The sales for PM looks like in the range of 75k and 5th in the billboard according to Reddit post.

I thought the sales would be much higher. Guess the tik tok crowd prefers streaming.

In a way over the course, the fanbase will be left with true fans. God bless u tik tok either way.

I'm curious, when you guys rank the albums, do you go with an appreciation for the album as a whole (production quality, artwork, overall vibe) or do you count which one has the most good tracks and it's just an overall sum?

In other words, if one album had 5 gems but also 7 mediocre songs, and another had 12 good songs but nothing extraordinary, would you still place the latter as higher in the ranking?
Good evening... and welcome to the white pony

I heard some Gore influence on this album:

Lyrical content of infinite source is similar to Rubicon (donning the stage vs. facing the crowd)

Bridge in souvenir

Bridge solo in cut hands (reminiscent of Phantom Bride)

~metal dream in general

departing the body's chorus evokes LMIRL to me

I appreciated these parallels, it used similar elements to that record in a new context.

This album is pretty much what I wanted it to be and  is all that I've listened to for the last week.

If there is one thing that I would have liked, is one more longer track that was a bit more spacey and exploratory but that's a small quibble.

I definitely prefer it to Ohms which, despite enjoying it when it was first released, doesn't hold much replay value for me but I can imagine still listening to and enjoying Private Music several years down the line.

True, though there are references to playing and taking the stage in tracks like Hexagram and Moana just the same. It's a recurring theme.
