I have had to re-listen to "Locked Club" and "cXz" a few times to really get a feel for them. I'm still not entirely sold on the spoken word delivery on "Locked Club" but damn the whole song is so good. THAT is the experimentation I wanted so I can't dislike the song. For "cXz" I was put off by the disconnectedness of the chorus and verses in the first half of the song. They seem to not fit together so well until the song continues. I think those two songs will have to grow on me more (and will likely become two songs I'll listen to often). Otherwise, upon more listens of the album I can't help but feel I genuinely enjoy every song. There's not a single song that I genuinely dislike or think is subpar. I'm so grateful to experience this!

Fortunate enough to be listening since the leak  ;)  Idk if its just because I turned 40 this summer and have been a fan since I was 14, but I had tears in my eyes at times on first listen.

Groove of locked club. That bass/drum combo on ecdysis?  infinite source has a straight 00s summer pop punk vibe to it. love the dreamy bridge of souvenir. Surprised as hell to hear that acoustic guitar in "I think about you all the time" MOTM brings the energy right back up for the last few songs. Patton-esque vocals on cut hands. as well as other places on the album.  Metal Dream chorus just makes you fucking ascend. Departing the body so dark starting out but then so ethereal. Big interstellar/2001 vibes. Zane Lowe is right about the Nick albums having that nighttime/neon vibe. you hear so much with each listen. Really hope they stick with Nick (lol) going forward. I could write so much more but I don't wanna wall of text.

They should be really proud of this one. Such a cohesive album. It's gonna be a crime if they just play the singles.

Masterpiece.

Pink_Sands

Agreed, they should stick with Nick for any future albums. Like it or not, he brings out the best in them somehow.

I felt the same exact way with everything you said here. This might be my favorite deftones record. Excited to see how it ages. I absolutely had tears with this one and haven't felt that kind of joy in a while . I really needed it. It's incredible what music can do . This record flows so perfectly and the production is stellar. The perfect mix of everything they do well. Sober Chino sounds incredible and Steph sounds rejuvenated! Abe also leans more in the hip hop lane to me on this one and I think that's so freaking cool. What a beast.

And that acoustic guitar. 👌🏽

I really hope this isn't the last deftones record I ever get to hear but if it is I'm happy this one is so special. I really hope the music world realizes how rad this one is.

Just finished listen Private Music for the 1st time. I definetely didnt expect what I just heard, thats for sure. I dont know if its a good or a bad thing yet.

Favorites: My mind is a mountain, locked club, infinite source, souvenir (that synth is absolutely insane, loved it), metal dream (really fucking good).
Least favorites: probably cut hands and ITAYATT. The 1st one I thought it looked completely out of touch with the rest of the record. Not because of its heaviness, I just felt like Stef throwing a temper tantrum like "we need something heavy in this". The 2nd, Idk, Sextape 2.0? I didnt listen a second time. Maybe its a grower.

Thats just me.

Overal? Prolly 7.5/10. I gotta give it to them, its not the same ol formula and sound, they tried and as usual, they experimented. Thats remarkable.

Inb4 people murder me.
Sigh.

1st play through. It instantly hit on the first 3 tracks then it went into sorta grower territory for me.

I'm glad it did because it means I'll like it in the future.

It's defo weird. Same feeling I got when WP came out.

That is exactly what happened to me.

I came back in with Madonna/Cut Hands, but Infinite Source is a very jarring first listen. I could objectively tell that tracks that followed were "better" but because they weren't instant bangers, I had a bad nosedive with the album in the middle section.

I feel better about them now, but I still don't like Metal Dream. That's a skip for me.

Moz La Punk

Yeah the middle section is a grower for sure.

There aren't many clear hooks you hear in Souvenir, cXz and ITAYATT at first listen, at least to my ears.

After 20 or so listens Ive gained huge appreciation for ITAYATT, and Souvenir and cXz are starting to grow on me.

First and third part of the record though? Instant bangers.

I wouldn't say the structures are so much out there as White Pony. That record has so many weird sounds, it feels like you're on an alien planet when first listening, and with each listen the abstract sounds and structures get more familiar. I don't have that with any other Deftones record and that is why it remains my favorite.

But Private Music definitely is a very good album, and its more out there than Ohms for sure, which I like.

My only wish is that they would experiment more with song structures, even more than now. Almost every song is, if you look at it distilled: verse, half of the chorus, verse, complete chorus, bridge, chorus. I get it, it works, but I sometimes miss the days of Feiticeira where there isn't even a clear chorus. But Deftones never really were a band to do that often, and I can find peace with that.

Very happy with PM though, and at the same time it makes me even hungrier for more. Alas, thats the curse of being a fan, it's never enough. I'm happy they still make great new music this far in their career. Most bands when they're this 'old' bring out a few stinkers, but the entire discography of Deftones is solid as hell, and it makes it easy to be a fan of one of the few bands out there that truly makes me feel no shame at all being a fan of, no matter which part of their career you look at.

Well, maybe with chino @ waldrock and filthy handjobs as the exception lol

Gaz

First full listen and I really enjoyed what I heard, very experimental in parts, no clear favourite at the moment, as it will take time to grow, it really does feel progressive and a continuation of DE/KOI/Ohms for me

This is going to sound like a log from a medical professional trying LSD in the 60s, but whatever.

my mind is a mountain:
Before the launch, it felt like a solid track but quite straightforward, and short. I already preferred madonna. Glad it was the opener.
*I listened to both this and madonna when the album dropped, and didn't skip them to just hear the new stuff. I wanted to hear them in context.

locked club:
At first the "swagger" vocal was throwing me off, whilst I loved everything about the instrumental behind it. I kind of chuckled when I first heard it, like "WTF is he doing now?". I've gotten used to it, especially after ~metal dream.

ecdysis:
Loved this one straight away, the riffs feel old school. I did laugh at the bass part in the intro though, it reminded me of Filter. ["Wow, this really is old school"] Like the verse from "Gerbil", or something. I was surprised that the opening synth didn't play a bigger part in the overall melody though.

infinite source:
This is where I started to have a bad trip with the first listen. The intro riff really threw me. Then it was so poppy and accessible, it just felt jarring. I've adjusted to it fine after the second listen.

souvenir:
On first listen, the battle between what my head was hearing and my heart was understanding continued here, because I needed some sort of immediate banger to pull me back in after infinite source, and souvenir wasn't that, on first listen. The chorus riff was unmistakable material, but it was kind of clichéd. The synth outro actually annoyed me first time because I desperately needed to move on to the first banger I could hear.
Now? Again, I've adjusted to it just fine on the second listen, it now comes across like a kind of slow, heavy Tempest/Rosemary/HeartsWires type of song. Though very straightforward musically.

cXz:
Of the four middle tracks, despite the fact that I was in a spiral, this was the one that my head was telling me was closest to what I wanted from the album. It just felt a bit unfamiliar. Now, it's easily in the top half of the tracks for me. It has one of the best choruses on the album.

i think about you all the time:
I expected this to be another WGTB from the title - I was expecting a sinister twist, but they played it straight. Based on the title, before hearing the album, I would've guessed that this was the heaviest track. It quickly transpired that this was a dreampop kind of thing, atmospherically it reminded me of when the demo of Xerces w/out vox first dropped. I also expected the drop in the track to come much sooner, and when it didn't I figured it was going to continue like the intro for the whole track. Again, I was much happier with it on the replay. It's a needed mellow lull in the album.

milk of the madonna:
Before the launch I easily preferred this to mountain, and I joked to my friend before midnight that "[Keanu Reeves uh-oh meme] What if madonna is the best track?". When the track list dropped, I was so glad that madonna wasn't the last song. One thing I hated about the Ohms pre-release (and I like that album more than most), is that they gave us the title track, which ended up being the final track. I don't like hearing the last track before the rest of the album, it means there's nothing new after it, you've already heard the last thing that the album has to say before the album's even dropped. Madonna's easily amongst the best tracks. The verses of madonna are probably my favourite individual part of the entire album.

cut hands:
What in the nu metal is this? Fortunately this banger followed madonna and I felt the first listen start to resurge. Liked it straight away. Like cXz, it has a weird chorus I'm really into.

~metal dream:
I'm sorry, I don't do the rap. I hate the verse, it's giving me Lana Del Rey. It sounds like "National Anthem". This one's set in stone, I'll never like it, and the chorus is just 'there' so it can't rescue the track for me. This helped me appreciate that locked club's weird vocals weren't all that weird.

departing the body:
Chino singing deep threw me off and I thought it was a surprise cameo guest appearance. Took a second listen to grow on me but is fine. Far from the greatest closers on all of their albums for me, despite the fact that I like it, it's easily in the bottom half but that's because on all of their previous albums, even albums I'm not overly keen on, the closer has generally been solid. Riviere for instance is the only song on SNW I'm 100% ok with.

This is still fluid, but I think it's setting:

1. locked club
2. milk of the madonna
3. cut hands
4. cXz
5. ecdysis
6. i think about you all the time
7. departing the body
8. infinite source
9. souvenir
10. my mind is a mountain
11 ~metal dream

If you can send me your archives of the ripped broadcasts I'd really appreciate it. I also saw how you could skip through them on mobile and couldn't figure out a way to save them
