First ride in progress...

So what did you think of the album?
Good evening... and welcome to the white pony

StarSlinger

My quick review of the album after sitting with it for 4-5 days. 10/10. I don't know where I'd place it in their discography but this is of the highest quality from them. Incredible that they can write such an album this far into their careers. I see why they are so proud of what they've made. I couldn't be happier for them and for us, the fans.

1.my mind is a mountain - peak
2.locked club - banger
3.ecdysis - peak
4.infinite source - best song
5.souvenir - peak
6.cXz - banger
7.i think about you - peak
8.milk of the madonna - so peak
9.cut hands - holy shit
10.~metal dream - peak
11.departing the body - peak

Guys the little synth touches on Ecdysis are absolutely incredible. Franks All over it and kills it. Takes the song to an entirely different level. I love it.

Fan since 1st album. Avoided singles and leak. On my 4th listen...

My first impression was that it achieved my hope of it sounding closer to DE and KNY than gore and ohms. At a few points I felt like the tempo felt the same throughout the album which is something I didn't enjoy about the later albums... after a few more listens that feeling is fleeting.

There isn't a song I don't like. There isn't a song that stands out to me as way better than any other. It's a cohesive collection of really good songs.  The only gripe that comes to mind is I'd love to hear chino just slightly higher in the mix as this is the best he has sounded in a while. The mix in general is great though. I'm excited for the inevitable feeling of appreciating more things about it in future listens. That is my favorite part.

End result is: I got exactly what I wanted...The true follow up to KNY

Congrats deftones fans! Enjoy letting the album sink in and I hope you all enjoy it!

10 full listens is enough for a mini-review, right? Not that anyone cares, but here's my twin coppers...

Full album - 7.5/10

My Mind is a Mountain - I feel like Chino's vocals are the only strong thing about this track. Everything else just feels a bit paint-by-numbers and phoned-in. One of the weakest tracks on the album and I really wish it wasn't the opener.

Locked Club - Still not sure how I feel about this one. It feels sort of like a reject from Koi No Yokan. I do want to point out that Chino's delivery in the verses reminds me of some of Nick Cave's more aggressive stuff (and I mention this because I will always put Cave in the spotlight when I can AND because Chino's new look in the MMiaM video sort of reminds me of Cave).

ecdysis - Whoo that bass. And the chorus to this thing is gorgeous. The synths and the vocals are making some kind of magic there that I can't quite process. A stand-out on the album for me.

infinite source - Another one that I think is saved by the chorus but it's still a good song overall. I love the ending a lot (it's very Hum-like and that's always a plus). And honestly, those lyrics really make me worry that this might be their final album. It just feels/sounds like a farewell.

souvenir - that chuggy guitar in the chorus and what I guess is the bridge (?) is a monster. I like this one instrumentally but the vocal melody does nothing for me. But oooh boy I love that chilled/ambient ending and how it leads into cXz.

cXz - if I could take one song off the album, it would be this one. Snooze.

I think about you all the time - almost perfect. Top 5 deftones song of all time. I love every single thing about this song. The fade from loud to quiet at the very end is chilling. And after a few listens, I realize just how much Frank adds to this one.

milk of the madonna - I know it's a simple song but it's still in the running for my favorite on the album. That chorus is fire (hahahaseewhatididthere?). The re-playability factor on this one is endless.

cut hands - honestly, I really didn't like this one at first. I do think it seems a little out of place on this album (reminds me of Cntrl/Cmnd screwing up Diamond Eyes) but it really grew on me around listen #5. I like the messy, jumbled part around the midway point most of all. And yeah...there's a bit of Adrenaline/Fur nostalgia going on.

metal dream - if you pretend the verses don't exist (sounds like a forced and modernized "Epic" by FNM) this is an amazing song. I feel like it could be a sleeper for a lot of people...that song that ends up sneaking up on you after a few months and you realize how underrated it is.

departing the body - Favorite on the album. Not their best closer (that's Rubicon) but 2nd. Chino's deep voice took me by surprise (insert another Nick Cave similarity here). Everything is firing on all cylinders here. Vocals, lyrics, the entire band. God, what a track.

It gives me really strong "National Anthem" by Lana Del Rey. Sadly the chorus is bland for me, so there's no redeeming factor with this track.

In terms of albums, nothing dethrones the classic 4, this one sits in the next tier with DE/KNY/Gore/Ohms for me. So I'm happy enough with it.

SNW doesn't exist.

Also happy anniversary to me, 19 years on SL today.

Speechless. I love Frank channeling Roddy Bottum on Ecdysis. Reminds me a lot of faith no more. And departing the body shaping up like pink maggot and ending just like it like the heart beating and giving out. Milk of the Madonna starting out like lovers. I have so much more to say, but did any of those things stand out to anyone else? How about Chino counting down in departing the body? It reminded me of David Bowie Ziggy Stardust album spaceman type shit. Instant classic for me. Upon first listen, I'm going nine or 9 1/2. I think there was a couple missed opportunities, but I feel half retarded for even saying that because they are not my songs. Just saying there were parts during Stef's chugging here and there where it felt a little empty And boring or repetitive for a few seconds. But every song is amazing. Infinite source reminds me a lot of of blink-182 or something like that. I just love the harmonies in that song and they pulled off those guitar parts flawlessly and  somehow made it work.

Hate to have to make the line longer and get in it, but if anybody could send me a link to that radio broadcast, that would be so nice. Man, I'm glad pretty much. Man am I glad that almost Everyone here is happy with the record! Someone pointed out about the ramp up to this being a Snoozefest and then now understanding why. I wanna feel those feels if somebody could send a link. Back to this bad ass piece of art. This one was a long time coming I would say all of 18 years. My favorite since Saturday night wrist, and has potential of becoming my favorite record. I sure hope so.

Damn Saturday night wrist doesn't exist? I hate that for you. But music is just an opinion. I get it. I'm really sorry about that though. I will say that that record took a long time for me to digest and now I love it.

Even with more waves and space and time this record still feels so fresh!!!lol

GoonSquadron

The only skip for me is cZe , it just has 2 alternating part. I can listen to it , but I'd rather skip.

For literally every other song, it's hard for me to pick a favorite. It's that good, even if it has a skip I'm still giving it a 10/10.

I'm very confused how people are saying there are no hooks, this album shines in its hooks! So grateful for this record.

So what did you think of the album?

This Band just continues to Own.

Fearlessly experimental. Groovy, grimy and beautiful. The push and pull we all love about Tones in full effect. Nick did a great job here as well. Expect many more spins before I really dig in on PM but first blush? Outstanding addition to Deftones catalog.
One last Thing...You Should Beware the Content!!

Thank God that you........ love..... at all.

So cool seeing so many old faces here!
The album is outstanding and heterogeneous. gorgeously produced too. maybe there's not a song in the album that's 10 points like lets say Feiticeira or Lotion. But Most tunes are above 8 or 9. really creative record.

We have deftones for years and years to come

There's a link on Facebook with the live set from last night-anyone who watched it did you notice the chick dialed 976-Evil on the phone before Infinite Source played? And in the drawer there was a white pony figurine?

Thanks for that Buffalo live remaster forever ago. Sounds weird but I've remembered you often because of it.

Fred Bob

Don't want to be a Debbie Downer but Brent Hinds passing kinda cast a cloud over release day.

Trying to soak up the album today. The colours it evokes is something very different for the band.
