I get missing the good old days, but this new stuff is still VERY MUCH Deftones. Try being a Tame Impala fan.. his new song in 5 years is just a straight up boring house track. I get the complaint when artists stray far and away from what made them great - but Deftones doesn't do that and they haven't done that. They've put out remarkably consistent material for 30 years. It's damn near unheard of in this day and age. Every album is extremely solid, even Gore has its moments and while it may not be their best - Gore is still better than most band's best album. So while you may not like the new stuff, let's not act like "it's not as good as their old shit." That era has been over for 20 years at this point. The new shit fuckin slaps and they sound as energized and vibrant as ever.

I thought the same until I heard Ohms and honestly thought that I much preferred the Nick version of modern deftones.

Yeah, Milk s blowing Mountain out of the water. I did not like the way Chino's vox were so drowned out in parts but after a few more listens, I think it really adds to it, especially the muttered "Holy Ghost.." parts. We have to be realistic and understand that as Chino gets older, he's going to find ways to sort of blend/hide some of his weaknesses vocally. It makes me think of Trent Reznor bringing out those gospel-like singers for live stuff during the Hesitation Marks performances. They sounded great but drowned Trent out a lot...but the overall sound was GREAT. I think that's kinda what Chino is doing in this song (and a lot on Gore and Ohms tracks, too). (shrug). Just thinking out loud.

Yeah both new Tame Impala and new Mac Demarco suck compared to their old stuff, I've said the same about Korn, Slipknot and Linkin Park. I thought it was just me getting older and I feared I'd feel the same about new Deftones. But holy fuck, I've never been so excited for a new album in such a long time!

I think deftones have strayed far and away from their original sound on a few tracks. Teenager is the good example. But I don't think they ever really dropped the ball by trying very new sounds and approach (with some very personal exceptions, cough Pink Cellphone outro). But this song is very much them.

I understand the sentiment, but as a fan from the start, I don't believe they ever had a sound to stray from. Adrenaline did not sound like their reggae infused rock demos. When Around the Fur came out, I thought it sounded nothing like Adrenaline. That's what I loved about it and I continue to love about them to this day. In a long list of bands I've enjoyed in my lifetime, they stand alone in ability to make me feel that way.

Guys I got a really good diamond eyes album guitar tone. Sounds very good for you've seen the butcher, would you guys like me to cover some songs?
My dad says Deftones gay, but he doesn't know real music

I've had "I'm on fire" stuck in my head since last night.

Can't wait for this album to drop. So glad this place is active again. Reddit sucks lol

This is pretty much the point I was trying to make. They've always changed up their sound with every album from the very beginning, while still remaining true to themselves. Which is why I don't get the complaint from older fans when they say "I prefer their old stuff." or "their new stuff just isn't the same as the old stuff." Like, no what you really mean is you just like their first two albums and that's ok. But fans that keep going on about it 20+ years later, like give it a rest..

Im one of those old fans and Im only speaking for myself here, but the thing is, Deftones was the 1st band I fell in love with, so their early records are like a really vivid memory imprinted in my mind. Ever since, its been like a drug. I keep trying to relive and feel the same dopamine hits that their first records gave me. Its not fair to them, nor me, tbh, but I dont give a fuck, no offense. Thats is why when I heard MMIAM I was teleported back. It has THAT vibe of the Deftones I discovered as a kid. I even teared up a little, no shit. Lame, I know, but oh well.

Their 1st 4 records are immaculate to me and nothing will ever get close to it. Its just because they helped me find myself during those years. Im not saying other records after the S/T are bad, I just keep trying to replicate that guitar tone, or a song feel, you know?

Theres a lot of their newer shit that I really like. I love Diamond eyes, for instance and most of Ohms. I think KNY is really solid. Some stuff in SNW too, etc.

It is what it is. I used to think they could do no wrong and nowdays its easier to accept they are only human. Its ok to not dig some songs or even dislike it. I guess thats the benefit of getting older. Things slow down... a lot, lol.

Cheers.

I agree with just about what everyone is saying. And it's so cool that we are all still here talking about this band 10 albums deep. Incredible.

Nothing will ever top white pony for me. It's the album I measure all music against.

gavinkfox

I personally liked both singles. They both sounded very new to me, although I did get Mein and Swerve City vibes from milk of the madonna

Waited a bit to hear the track, enjoying a wee beverage with it...and it blew me away.

At first, I dug it, then half way through...it just all hit me and I got all teary eyed; there's a new song, it's a banger, it still sounds highly energetic, still relevant, still THEM and still different too and I still like it...I get to do this again; be excited and wait for the record to drop, watch and read the interviews and go on this album cycle...
And every album cycle since probably the S/T, when watching them live and seeing them in interviews...I started becoming less afraid of aging even, less afraid of the next ten years...if I'm lucky and alive, I have everything to look forward to <3

This is a great discussion and further proves the point on this band's longevity and consistency. Like a lot of you guys I've loved Deftones since the '90s and have always been amazed at how much they've evolved and pushed their sound throughout their career while never abandoning their core sound or influences. They objectively have one of the greatest discogrophies in music history for that reason. They have always seemed to  be above the typical slate of musical acts because they never have had an overall critical or commercial flop or have had a "sellout" moment. I don't even consider them having multiple peaks, because every piece of music they put out is a DEFTONES song. That carries a legacy and respect with it that most band's I'm sure would love to get a piece of.

I'd tell someone who's unimpressed or skeptical of their diversity or song crafting skills to Go listen to Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event, Sextape and My Mind is a Mountain all in a row. The same band with the same core sound but with vastly different results.
