And then he goes on with Zane Lowe with the guys and says he hasn't heard the record yet. I'm not sure if he meant he didn't hear Chino on it yet or just the final mix, but I think what he means by it is maybe some old flashes From early on, maybe some sounds but I think he's saying he's playing maybe a six or seven string guitar...Even if a little bit. Not sure what he meant by old-school fans are gonna love it, but I'm hoping that's it or at least one of the reasons. I'm really loving the guitar sound and riffs on milk. Also, my brother mentioned the line about burning the foxes out from the vines being from the Bible? I'm not familiar so I don't know but that just adds more to this song for me...
of course stef has heard a version of the album or at least all the songs individually, but probably not the fully mastered and tracklisted one at that point.

I think it was Chino that said something like "if you've been a fan for a long time, you're going to like this new album." Or something to that effect. Stef said the new album sounded a little like a mix of "Diamond Eyes & Koi No Yokan". But to your point, I gotta assume he meant he hadn't heard the final mix with the song placement that was sent out to production.

The whole basis for the lyrics is the description of Pentecost in the book of Acts from the New Testament. Holy Spirit/Ghost, tongues of fire, a wind coming from above onto the house(s)...first few verses of Acts chapter 2.

And I didn't recognise the bit about foxes and vines but it's in the Old Testament, in Song of Solomon.

I think I'm a bit more concerned about Steph's apparent lack of connectedness to the album than many here... from the one interview we got it seems like he has very little idea about the record or what's on it, and the others seem to be annoyed with him. I know there's always been a tense Chino-Steph dynamic that seems to boil over into the public most album releases... but he seems super distanced from the band now. I'll be seeing the tour kickoff show in Vancouver on August 22nd, and its not even clear to me if Steph will be crossing the border to play the gig? I've seen Deftones many times, and I just can't really picture how the show would feel with only three of the band members present...

Also, I am curious why is there so little promotion for this album? On the one interview so far they spent more time talking about the writing of White Pony and Eros than they did the new album. I don't need to hear about how White Pony was written or what happened with Eros any more, ten, fifteen, twenty years later... But I sure would be interested to know if the band is excited about their new music!

I guess the silver lining is that in knowing so little about Private Music it's going to be a pretty fun total surprise to see what we get... my fingers are crossed for something magical...

Gore was a lot worse on that front. Stephen is just like that. He seemed very please with all the songs in the interview at least, even if he didn't listen to the latest version. I kind of understand his lack of interest when he was done with his part a year and half ago. It really felt like Chino was responsible for how long it took to produce it.

funksk8er

I feel like Steph and Chino were at a good place in that interview. Steph really gave Chino his flowers. Abe seemed more annoyed with Steph's not hearing the album comments. "Check your email" lol

And for the shows, I really don't expect him to be in Montreal. If its Lance, its Lance. I heard he is great live and all I want is for the show to sound great. Unfortunately its at the Bell Center so, it probably won't,

It was Chino that said "If you've been a fan for 30 years then you're going to love it". Stef said it's a continuation of Ohms and Koi.

Ofc Stef has heard the album, I'd say he just hadn't heard the finalised product in that Zane Lowe interview.

And Chino changes the track titles/track listing

I would actually not love if I was in a band, I'd finish my part, all the music is recorded, then the singer takes a year to record his vocals in between shows of side projects, decides everything including song names and songs order, then I got to follow my emails to know what is up. I think it was even worse with SNW where Chino and Shaun Lopez would completely restructure some of the songs, and then include a dumb ad lib about blow jobs and english having bad teeth.

LG95

Stef has only been extremely positive about the album every time it's come up on the Dr Greenthumb podcast in the last couple of years. He's continually said it's amazing from start to finish.

MeWithoutYou is fond of that Solomon verse as well.

Even when they talked about milk of the madonna on last nights episode, Stef said that Chino came up with a lot of cool shit on the album. Vocals and guitars. I don't think i've heard Stef talk so positive about Chinos work.

Record Label was probably pissed that it was delayed so many times and no time
now to promote it.

StarSlinger

They definitely should have promoted the second single a little bit. I've noticed a strong lack of reaction/cover videos on YouTube compared to MMIAM. A lot of people don't even know they dropped a second single.

Don't forget this album is "distributed by Deftones" instead of the label. Probably why there's less of a push. Fanbase is gonna listen and pay attention regardless. Plus it's Deftones, they do anything and websites want the clicks. Why pay for ads when sites like metal injection and kerrang will do it for you.

LG95

So looking forward to a proper new album feature interview.

I swear, a Deftones album rollout is the closest I get to kid-at-Christmas excitement these days. I want the new toys.

I feel like I am being mean to Chino here, but I think Steph is getting a lot of flack, deservedly so for certain things, but I don't blame him for everything.
