I know some of you guys criticized the mix when it first dropped and I'm hearing it. Some of the songs sound kind of tinny, right?

Someone quoted me asking about Genesis sounding like Jane's Addiction. Anytime I hear vocalists for guitar based bands post 1988 use echo/delay on their vocals it always reminds me of Perry Farrell. Not a bad thing. To be clear the music for Genesis didn't remind me of Jane's.

Despite Chino in several interviews saying that Deftones record each album with no plan on what a new album will sound like he's also said in many interviews how Deftones are known for their dynamics. Deftones know what the fans want and they probably keep in mind Deftones are kind of like a brand. Like a bottle of Smirnoff. Deftones songs remind me a lot like Nirvana in practice. Loud. Quiet. It's kind of like like buying a can of Pepsi with Deftones. You can expect to know what you're buying. Similar to AC/DC. The next album will probably follow the same loud/quiet formula. Not a bad thing. Just be interesting if they took more musical risks and broke away from their loud/quiet formula.

It'd be cool to hear Deftones do more songs where the mood and feel of the track is consistent through the whole song. Like soft vocals only, use of different vocal effects throughout for dynamics, no screams, with ethereal, textural, ambient, chill, more experimental music. Or songs with full on guitar brutality with screaming/yelled vocals throughout and more use of vocal effects for vocal dynamics. On some tracks wish Abe used double bass and could really hear Abe expand his drum kit with more drums and cymbals to also expand Deftones overall sound. He'll probably never throw in an extra kick drum to his kit though.

Overall Ohms is good. Past albums are better tho IMO.

btw rumor has it Deftones are going to do the theme song for the next  Jame's Bond movie.  :P On a serious note why haven't Deftones been a musical guest on Saturday Night Live yet???!!
Doesn't Urantia seem pretty consistent like you're wishing for? I think its pretty straight fwd in that aspect
BTW, weird song title for that track. Way off. Just like Error. Hos naming of songs seems lazy to me the last decade. Tired of it. No surprises anymore there.... just the music. Love when a song title really resonates with me toward it's song and he just doesn't do it. Pompeji, i get.

That's one song of ten. They've talked about sequencing of songs an on album. What if tracks on a Deftones album alternated? Like song 1 being heavy/screaming, song 2 song more experimental/no screaming, song 3 heavy/with screaming, repeat, etc.? Or if they are going to release albums on tape and vinyl make one side really heavy/fast/with screaming and the other side more musically experimental with no screaming vocals? Or on a CD like Ohms with 10 songs that would mean the first 5 songs are heavy with screaming vocals and the last 5 songs are more experimental with no screaming vocals. Or vice versa.

Deftones have never released a double album. What if they did and album 1 was ten songs, all heavy, with screams and then album 2 was also ten songs of more experimental music with less emphasis on Metal and no screaming vocals? 20 new Deftones songs!

Deftones have never released a proper EP of new songs like the Alice in Chains "Sap" EP either.  A Deftones EP with 4 new songs could be a way to test the alternating format out. Like 2 heavy more Metal songs with screaming vocals then 2 non screaming less Metal songs. The EP could be released on CD, vinyl, and tape and on DVD/ Blu Ray to also make it a visual EP.

Man, I feel bad for anyone who is already bored with the album. I was worried that would happen to me, and I was worried that every time I would return to it I would feel further disappointed like I did with Gore. But that hasn't happened - in fact I feel re-engerized every time I take a break and then put it back on. God I love this album.

This link is dead - 3:45 to the end - might be one of Deftones biggest moments for me since Rodleen on Knife party.

OHMS is on my top 3 now!
Jesus Christ, this are my favorite chino's lyrics since self titled.
And all the days I've missed you 🍂

I just got an update on my UPS Deftones package, it has an arriving date which is Saturday but the weird thing is that it was already in California but I guess now is back in Kansas which is weird af but I'm glad that I finally got an update and an specific delivery date.

Ohms is still amazing. I haven't lost my desire to listen to it, even after dozens of plays.

The best track on the album is Ceremony. Final answer.

It's followed closely by Urantia and Error.

Far away

Surprisingly I haven't been listening to it as much as I thought I would. Not for any particular reason as I have it on now. Headless is still the best track

Edit: never thought I'd say this but I theres parts of it where I don't care for the production on the vocals.

Second edit: Ohms is probably one of the best songs on the record

Still waiting for my pre-order, with no response from the support team :/

I finally got mine yesterday (Southern California) so hopefully the rest are not too far off!

Unfortunately not (in The Netherlands).
I did get a reply from the support team; it hasn't shipped out yet.
That does answer the underlying fear that it had been lost in shipping, so that's something. I suppose maybe I'll get it around Christmas?

Literally

After listening to this album dozens of times, I think it's a mid-pack Deftones album.  Albums I would personally place ahead of it are WP, ATF, ST, and SNW.  It is a solid album but too repetitive and not very innovative.  TSOM is my favorite track.

A mid-tier Deftones album is a great album.
I could float here forever

This. It'd be interesting to hear Deftones stay true to who they are and also incorporate more Math Metal/Prog influences with new music resulting in an Alt Prog sound.

Had Chi never died what would Deftones have continued to sound like and how would've Chi evolved as a bass player? Chi's playing undoubtedly affected how and what the rest of the band played and probably even how Chino sings and his lyrics. Chi's style and even choice of bass is different to Sergio's. No disrespect to Sergio. Sergio and Chi have different styles though. There was an interview with Chi where he mentioned being really musically influenced by recordings from Studio One which is a Jamaican record label that put out reggae, dub, and other Jamaican music. Personally I could really hear those influences and this is even mentioned on Wikipedia for Chi regarding recording Change.

Wow.
A couple of hours later and the mailman delivered the entire pre-order!
Woop woop!

EDIT: I feel I can now finally keep listening to this album on repeat, now that I heard it properly (on some physical format).

I'd also like to hear less screamy verses and soft chorus's.. if it's a softer song make it a softer song... don't need to be screaming just to do it... I feel like Chino pushed screaming where he didn't need to on some songs..

I agree. I really wanted a slower atmospheric song on the album in the same vein as a Sextape or Beauty School. We got close with Pompeji but I feel like his screams, while good, were unnecessary in that song.
